Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has already been overshadowed by much better games, but it is still one of the surprise packages of the year. We were expecting the budget PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 survival horror to be a bit of a disaster, but the episodic escapade was thoroughly enjoyable from start-to-finish, capturing the series' campiness perfectly without ever going overboard.
With its addictive Raid Mode, it's a perfect fit for the PlayStation Vita as well, and today marks its release on Sony's handheld β but how does it hold up? Well, judging by this video, it looks fine, though naturally nowhere near as polished as its new-gen counterpart. The lighting is a little flat and the framerate is sadly not flawless, but it looks decent for a release that wasn't designed with the hardware in mind to begin with. Plus, you literally do get the entire console game here.
We hope to have a review for you shortly β unsurprisingly, we didn't get sent a pre-release copy β but do share your impressions in the comments section if you've picked this port up. Are you pleasantly surprised by this scare-fest, or is it simply ghastly on Sony's portable? Scream where no one can hear you down below.

The base game itself is great. From a technical perspective there are better games but as far as enjoyment for this year I'd probably put it at the top of my list alongside Mortal Kombat X. That said, all the reports I've read so far say the Vita port is a disappointment. I can't say I'm surprised. It was designed for consoles and even with that in mind it was never a looker so poor graphics don't surprise. If the gameplay was still fun I could look past that but apparently the frame rate is really bad and especially for raid mode, that's not a good thing.
Also, this game was initially supposed to be $40, now it's $30? Thanks for the $10 'discount' but I think we all know why that happened.
@Gamer83 A lot of the early reviews aren't taking into account the day one patch, though, which is worth keeping in mind.
Either way, they were never going to win with this. It would always be compared unfavourably to the PS4 version, because the Vita is not a PS4.
The original Revelations on 3DS looked like a 360 game - and was amazing in 3D.
@get2sammyb
That's a fair point. If the patch has actually made the game playable, then I guess that's good enough because I did want a Resident Evil on Vita and this is obviously the only way it was ever going to happen. If Capcom can't be bothered to make more RE for a platform that still has plenty of life like the 3DS, then Vita was never in the cards.
I actually bought this on the Xbox One earlier in the year. I didn't finish it, so I need to go back and do that one of these days. I think I'm on the last part with Barry and the little girl. I really enjoyed the Revelations game on 3DS. 3DS need more games like that IMO.
I just hope the review is not like others, which just say the console version better. As a ps vita owner i want to know if this is a decent game to play on the go. How does it compare to other vita games ?
@shonenjump86
You played Raid Mode yet? I liked the campaign a lot, surprisingly it's actually my favorite in the series since Code Veronica, but it was the Raid Mode that really completes the package. Highly addictive.
@Gamer83
I have played Raid Mode. It was pretty fun, haven't gotten far in that either though. :/
@Gamer83
Raid mode was perfect for the portable format of the 3DS in the first revelations, that's why I think it will also be a good fit for Vita
I played through this with a buddy a few months back, he didn't appreciate being only armed with a crowbar and brick.
@DualWielding
I agree, although it's not just good for handhelds, it's awesome on home consoles as well. If Capcom wanted some real easy money, I think selling Raid Mode alone for $15 would do well for them.
Still looks very sluggish in the framerate department even with the patch but what do you expect when Sony gives the porting job to some low level developer I can't even recall.
I really hope it performs better irl than in that video, because that really does look quite shoddy even for a handheld. I'd give anything for another Vita shooter that performs as well as KZ Mercs did, but with a half decent story!
EDIT: granted, I know the main focus of Resi isn't shooting, it's horror, but still.
Is it cross-buy with the PS4 version? I doubt it is but I'm hoping. I don't think I'd pay for it again.
Costs 26.99 euros on eu store, has 10% plus discount, no cross buy. Got it downloading now. The game is 3GB and has another 850MB update.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it... It is a sad part on Sony's effort with this port of a game unfortunately.
Honestly, it doesn't look that bad. The framerate is consistent. Not quite 30, but certainly not unbearable for me. I was able to play the 3DS version of MGS3, though.
I'd get this if I didn't already have the PS4 version.
@sonicmeerkat Lol same with my partner, lol he kept complaining about it xD
@moomoo Agreed, not to mention a 900mbps patch that improves a few adjustments including raid mode.
I hear if you go to options in pause menu during gameplay, you can lower the brightness settings to make the textures look blended and other cringe worthy background lighting and shadowing on top of anti aliasing. Not many people will care about it though but it is just a suggestion.
I loved Revelations on 3DS. LOVED. Does this one also have gyro aiming?
@JaxonH Why yes it does Jaxon! All you have to do is turn it on in options pause menu. :3
@Archways24
Sold!
@JaxonH You're welcome, I hope what I said was right before you do anything let me confirm it first. I want you to be careful and I do not want to mislead you into buying it but I think I heard that it is implemented on this version. I haven't tested this out yet so do it at your own risk.
Actually it does say on controls menu so far.
@Archways24
Ok so it does have gyro.
However, I have to say either the Vita has a horrible gyroscope or they just didn't implement good gyro controls. It's rigid and stiff and stutters the frame rate if you try to move the reticule in more than one direction at once (like diagnally). What's worse, it seems to lose its location easily so that the reticule doesn't always move 1:1 with your wrist movement.
Ah well, I can play with analogs I guess, but I'm really shocked at how horrible these gyro controls are when the 3DS nailed it with Revelations. I think it might just be that the 3DS has a much higher quality gyroscope in it, seeing as it's a major part of the systems features, whereas it seems to be more of an afterthought with the Vita.
@JaxonH It felt kinda awkward for me, but I really never use this kinda gimmick especially the Borderlands 2 version as well...
@Archways24
When it's done well it's far from a gimmick- in fact after having played several games with absolutely superb gyro integration (hybrid controls with analog- large movements still done with right analog but for just aiming it's so much faster and more accurate to tweak with gyro) I'm convinced it's the way of the future. Revelations opened the door to this viewpoint for me, and Splatoon was the game that really wrote it in stone.
But Revelations 2 on Vita- it's nearly unplayable the gyro is so horrendous
