October's free PlayStation Plus games are available now – well, in Europe at least. The goodies – which include Super Meat Boy and Broken Age on the PlayStation 4 – will be yours to download for the remainder of the month. Expect them to be available in North America when the PlayStation Store updates a little later in the day.
We've received a bit of slack for describing this month's offering as lacklustre, but we're going to take this opportunity to clarify our thoughts. Firstly, if you like this selection, then that's great. However, in lieu of bigger games, Sony has been very good at offering new releases like Rocket League of late. But while the brutal Super Meat Boy is making its PlayStation debut this time, everything else feels like it's been cobbled together without much thought at all. And we stand by that.
Of course, if you're not sure what you're getting, then in addition to the two abovementioned titles, you'll also score Kickbeat, Chariot, Kung-Fu Rabbit, and Unmechanical: Extended. Hardly an awe-inspiring offering, is it? Still, we maintain that PlayStation Plus is great value, so keep that in mind before you nail us to the cross in the comments section below.

Sweet, although they can't be downloaded just yet because...well...I'm at work.
I agree with u guys. Even so, I'll be getting Super Meat Boy at least. Always wanted to try it.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll have super meat boy waiting for me when I get home from work.
@kyleforrester87 get the Playstation app on your phone and you can purchase and dl while away from your ps4, as long as it's in sleep mode though
@kyleforrester87 @Radbot42 You don't even need the app, just go to store.playstation.com from any phone, tablet or pc.
@JeffreyG @Radbot42 Yeah good shout, I've got the app but never actually tried doing it. Will give it a go now!
It baffles me why so many expect AAA titles every month. Honestly, any good AAA title out there I have already played it, so I enjoy when they add obscure titles that I would normally not try just to try something new. Also heard Broken Age and Super Dong Boy were both pretty good titles.
The best news of this PS+ line-up is SuperMeatBoy on Vita. Personally, it's lacking on the PS4 side of things but always good for others who havent played these.
@JoeBlogs I am sure they will at some point, but honestly it seems like the days of AA games are kinda going away. It's either budget indies or AAA blockbusters
Im loving these games. Broken Age alone costs £20!!! £3 for PS+ a month would be worth it just for that one discount each month. . . but NO ... We get umpteen games shared between 3 systems.... Whats not to love???!!!
Though it's kinda ridiculous that they haven't added many AAA games yet (I'm not complaining, it's just you woulda thought that Sony want to cater to a wider audience with PS Plus) but I'm really happy with this lineup. Though I've already played Broken Age, it may be one of my GOTY picks. Super Meat Boy is a hugely fun game too
@JoeBlogs well there are definitely still some AA games being produced, just not like it was in its hey day in the ps2 era, is what I meant. Should have been more specific I suppose.
ps+ should be renamed indie +
Can't wait for SMB to kick my ass...again! It'll be even harder on the Vita because of the twitchy thumbsticks.
I was at the "gimme triple-A titles" camp too, coming off of a tremendous PSplus run in the PS3 days. I was spoiled and the value of games lost all meaning to me; whenever a game dropped that wasn't completely mainstream, I didn't even bother because "it's gonna be a plus title anyway", and I was right all too often.
But somewhere this year I realized that not one of the slightly bigger titles Sony has given us (injustice, Infamous fi), or titles they are likely to give us (knack, KZ: SF fi) really interest me. Whenever there's a triple A title coming out that I like I'm picking it up anyway, but I'm really hesitant to buy indies because it's just not my thing. But due to Plus I've been able to play the most wonderful games I would've never bought myself and it brings the community closer together as well: I'm sure there's no free triple- A title that can thrill and excite people so much as Resogun and more importantly Rocket League have, and because it was free we could all "celebrate" these games together. And with this month's SMB there are millions of people who haven't even heard of it that are destroying controllers as we speak, something no triple- A game manages to "accomplish". Big budget titles always play it safe, where indies have way more focus: they are good in just one thing, but execute that in a way that' ll grab the player like no triple A title ever will.
In the end I understand the deception, I've been there. But when I think back I don't think I was disappointed about not getting Knack which I don't even wanna play, I was mad that PSplus was no longer the fun service where you could get lots of games for just $50 a year...It became this evil paid service that was required just to get online. The PS4 was a big hit all of a sudden, they were asking me money for online play which they never did and the feeling of Plus being a service for just a select group of happy gamers was gone: I didn't feel special anymore being a Plus subscriber, I didn't feel special anymore being a PS gamer...
@Boerewors Well done on writing one of the only criticisms I've seen of PS Plus that doesn't come across like the petulant ramblings of an angsty 14 year-old.
Personally, I'm not that bothered or annoyed by this month's lineup. I've got plenty of games to play and not enough time to play them, so as far as I'm concerned there's two more here to add to the pile and that's fine. BUT - I do see how the service is slowly changing, and not for the better. I'm not against paying for online services - I did it on the Xbox 360. But PS Plus is - or was - more than that. It's a way of making gamers feel rewarded for their time and money - and that feeling has definitely been diminished on occasion.
Having said that - Rocket League was an amazing, amazing freebie that I simply can't stop playing. Adore it. But it's far from consistent at the moment and Sony need to be thinking carefully about what they do with the service over the coming months and years.
@SonyInfinity Its not that everyone wants triple A's but, not the same 8bit games. Its mainly 8bit platform games so I can understand why some may be getting fed up.
Broken age and Super Meat Boy is all I can see worth playing.
Not sure why people got so upset at the lineup being called garbage, it is garbage after all.
And on another not, Sony really needs to step it up with the store updates. 2PM on a Tuesday is ridiculous, it should update at 12AM or something a bit more reasonable.
@SegaBlueSky
It feels the service is still stuck in between some no man's land between the golden PS3 days and the new era. Sony isn't really guiding the service in a clear direction; this clearly shows in how they don't wanna offend the old fans, but also cater to the newcomers and because fhey don't make a choice both aren't very happy with Plus as it is.
I myself have way to many games to play as well, and in the PS3 days I hardly played all of the games I was given, but it's more about the feeling of being part of some secret society with perks others don't really know about. Of course that's nonsense, but Sony should aim to give people that feeling again, the feeling they are getting value for money.
I am absolutely positive that there is no amount of free games they can reasonably give away to change the current state Plus is in, so I'd like to see them trying something else. Why on earth are they giving way 6 games, lots of them cross platform too? Isn't 1 PS4 and maybe 1 Vita title enough? It's probably still more than we will play, but this leaves room for Sony to do other things with the money we're giving them.
I hope they'll invest our money in their online service as a whole and communicate this clearly. Tell us what you're doing and give unlimited cloud storage for saved games for instance; this looks like a big deal, but it isn't really more impressive than the current 10Gb, but it sure sounds like it is. And not only do I hope they start giving fewer games instead of more, I want them to offer them on PSnow. That service is underutilized atm but is ultimately the future of gaming. Introduce this service properly by giving a game or 2 free each month on rotation and invest the money your saving on royalties for the free Plus games on giving PS gamers the games they own and that are available for free.
With all the money they're getting they should be focusing on the network capacity, on expanding the PSnow library and making it a better experience overall with experimenting with a "hybrid cloud solution". But most of all they should focus on giving gamers the feeling they belong to a very special community, one that's centered around a company that actually cares about gamers.
Not sure what the angry people here would prefer and if they would all agree on the same suggested games. But I'm really looking forward to playing Broken age and Super Meat Boy. Both look like a lot of fun.
I will at least add them to my library. A free game is a free game and who am I to say no to a free game.
I actually think Super Meat Boy is the worst thing there. Not as a game in its own right, but because it's a game that came out 5 years ago and has been given away and sold for about 2p hundreds of times over that period. People sarcastically accuse PS+ of basically being Humble Indie Bundles, often that isn't entirely accurate but when you see games like SMB appearing, it really is. Across all the various indie bundles in those 5 years, you could have bought SMB about 250 times for the price of this month's PS+.
Broken Age is far newer, more expensive to buy and doesn't just sink into the "indie platformer" ocean of sewage that's polluting Steam, PS+ and various bundles. The other stuff, regardless of how much one may subjectively feel about them, are at least rarer games that not everyone and his mother has played (or had the chance to play for about 2p) for 5 years.
