We weren't going to do a PlayStation VR unboxing because tons of better websites with better camera gear already have that corner of the market on lock. But you know what? We were going to take the headset out of its box anyway, so why not film it? We're gunning for the rudimentary, hobbyist sector of YouTube with this clip. In other words, we shot it on a bleeding iPhone.
Anyway, the first thing that will strike you as you pull the spaghetti of cables out of PlayStation VR's box is that… Well, there are a lot of cables. Like, a monstrous number of cables. So many cables, in fact, that our OCD is already starting to feel that little bit ill. We'll leave you to watch the video while we sweat over assembling them all. Couldn't there just be one?

ARGH!
I guess to balance things out you should get it all set up, start playing and get someone to film you to show where all the wires ended up. Starting to think it'll look a bit like an explosion in a spaghetti factory otherwise.
I gave your unboxing YouTube a like, I never ever watch them because, like, who really cares? But I watched yours. Muchos Kudos
Just a crazy thought...could Sony have done low-cost headset which used our existing Vitas as a screen, many people also have PS4 cameras and Move controllers laying around too.
Between the processing power of the PS4 and Vita, it might have been serviceable VR at a much lower cost.
It would have also created a fresh purpose for the Vita (VR games would basically be Vita carts) and it would allow people to utilize their existing purchases.
I could have got behind that approach with ease.
Iphones bleed now somebody call Mr Bean.

Just had a look at Sony V.R. gubbins essentially its a pair of glasses with a plastic mini hat with tons of wires and you need to be wired in to use it......
How much do Sony want for one of these contraptions?
in pound sterling please

@FantasyMeister Thank you!
@get2sammyb Told ya.
Just found out the big PS4 tour truck is going to be in my town 3 weeks from tomorrow, I need to go see if there's some preregistration to go try stuff out.
Question? Will the demos be available as downloads on PSN? As much as I like the idea of a demo disc, I don't think I got one with my Move but there were plenty of demos available to download. And since the PS4 is probably going to make us install them all anyway, just downloading them might be the way to go if the EU only gets 8 to the US 18.
That string inside the box to keep the lid from opening all the way seemed weird, though since you were able to unbox it from behind I suppose it wasn't in the way.
Looking forward to the 45 minutes long assembly video. And congrats for getting one, guess you're officially big time now.
Does 5-6 cables really constitute tons? Given the claims I was honestly expecting in excess of 50 cables!
@AhabSpampurse Well, it's not exactly one cable you plug into the console and go, is it? That's the gold standard, really.
I'm still not sold on VR. I might still get it but I'm in no rush. I will let others Beta test it and see how it goes.
I imagine one plugs into wall, the brick and cord which the wall cord also plugs into and runs into proc box, the cord connecting proc box to VR set, and a cord connecting the proc box into the PS4 or TV? Or maybe the USB connects it to PS4 and other one runs to TV.
In the end it won't look like that much. Most will be tucked away.
@JaxonH It's the "or maybe" that's the problem.
@GamerDad66 I'm guessing that would add too much weight and make the VR rather cumbersome and uncomfortable. From what I've read, the PSVR unit itself weights less than a Vita.
Well, if that's true..it's amazing. I've got the newer Vita and the thing is fairly light and always seems ready to squirt out my hands.
Most of the cables can be hidden behind your TV I think there's only one or two cables that go into the headset itself. I love the little mini power box it comes with that cocks like a gun so you get your USB flush. So far very impressed. Also it looks a real quality product, another nice little feature is the volume remote function. If PSVR fails then VR will never succeed. Reviews so far have been very good with Battle zone looking like the best title.
I'm really concerned about how Sony is handling the launch; where's the hype? I know I'm excited, but hardly any people I know outside of the people who game regularly are aware of its impending release.
Furthermore I haven't seen any talk about what PSVR is gonna bring outside of the gaming space. Surely they can't be aiming for early adopting core gamers alone? There are so many techminded folks out there that are hugely excited for VR, but don't care for games at all, these people should be persuaded into buying a headset with cool multimedia uses of PSVR. Will Netflix support a cinema mode on day one and will the Blu Ray player? If so, will it have a fixed pov which allows you to wear it away from the camera (read: lying down)? What are Sony's plans for VR in the music and sports space? Will I be able to shop online (IKEA, car dealers, real estate etc etc)? Will VR allow me to virtually travel the world?
Real VR gaming is still very much a thing of the future, but it has incredible potential in so many other forms of media and entertainment. Why isn't Sony doubling down on those non- gaming experiences, the type of experiences that can make VR a mainstream succes instead of a few geeks' wet dreams come true...
@get2sammyb I know, and you're right. I'm just being pedantic/anal. To quote The Simpsons "You're doing a grand job, Mitch!"
@Boerewors "Will Netflix support a cinema mode on day one and will the Blu Ray player? If so, will it have a fixed pov which allows you to wear it away from the camera (read: lying down)? "
Apparently there are three 'cinema modes' from day one. The largest is equivalent to 230" I think, and that one does not work lying down. I think it's the middle one (130" IIRC), that has the fixed POV. I don't know if Netflix will have a specific App, but cinema mode is reported to be supported by it. Same for BR.
Does anyone know if I can use the Wireless 2 headset with this, or does it have to be essentially tethered to the breakout box? @get2sammyb ? EDIT, Never mind - it needs to use the 3.5mm jack into the headset button bit.
That is a lot of cables that. My wife watched it and now wants it and the ps4 moved upstairs. Sigh. Something about child safety.
Agree about the lack of hype. I have not seen one advert. Maybe it is a soft launch since the hyped vive and rift haven't set the world on fire.
3D is great, check out the new Warcraft 3D movie. There were also some great 3D game applications like Super Stardust HD, Uncharted 3, Trine Trilogy, and Zen Pinball. Although some games tacked on 3D support without much testing or QA.
@GamerDad66 That would be awesome but a 540p screen for a VR head would make everything like a blocky messy, I mean even Sony going for 1080p display on the Playstation VR I'm having a few concerns at pixelation.
VR should be abandoned. It will bankrupt every company that takes it on.
