Earlier this year, Capcom stated that it expected to sell 4 million copies of Resident Evil 7 over its first couple of months on the market. However, the publisher's now thinking that the game may actually shift that many copies on day one alone.
EMEA marketing director Antoine Molant tells MCV that the company would "love to sell 4 million on day one globally". He continues: "Looking at what we see in the pre-orders and trends these days, we're pretty confident we are going to get there." Indeed, Molant seems to have real faith in the title's pre-orders, mentioning that "they're very good" when asked for further comment. The game's due out next month, on the 24th January.
Selling 4 million copies at launch would seem like a pretty impressive feat if Resident Evil 7 can pull it off - especially given the series' fall from grace in recent years. Do you think that it can manage? Survive in the comments section below.

i dunno, none of my friends are getting it and we are all big Resi fans
we feel that while it's an impressive game going by the demo, it's just not Resident Evil, we fell in love with the cheesy dialogue, the B-Movie feel and the over the top characters
this game just doesn't feel right as a Resident Evil game now it's gone first person, now if it had a third person camera option maybe but as it is, nah
it's like they saw Outlast and P.T and said, "lets just copy that"
January 24th? I keep thinking this game comes out in March. I better pre order.
I hope not, this is the last thing this arrogant company needs.
@FullbringIchigo I agree it doesn't look or feel like resident evil (demo). I think it's looking to a great game but not a resident evil game and your right it looks like they copied outlast and P.T. and saying it's resident evil. I think they are using the name to sell copies because they are scared to try a new ip. Also capcom needs to make a real good mega man game too.
I'll only buy day one if there are no review embargos!
All they did was record my Thanksgiving and used it for the game trailer.
I think they're going to struggle.
@Xaessya lol brilliant
Good one Capcom XD
I just don't see it happening. I applaud them for making an actual effort, doing tons of effective marketing, and giving out plenty of demos, but i don't see it pushing 4 million. That's close to pokemon sun/moon numbers, and there's a substantially larger fanbase for pokemon than there is RE.
Good luck.
I can't see me getting this Day 1. I can't think of any Resident Evil game in the past few years that I consider a 'great' Resident Evil game! Its telling that the remasters are still the best. RE5 was a 'good' action game - not a great horror survival. I think the best RE game of recent years is probably 'the Evil Within' (although had its flaws)
As a result, I am most likely going to wait to see how it reviews, what others think and then decide if and when I decide to buy. I am looking forward to seeing it on the Pro and with HDR but again I am not buying it based on that alone. The visuals do look impressive though - still not sure about the perspective and not having a VR headset also means that its VR option has no impact on my decision to buy.
Everyone I talk to says they don't really get the games whole deal and I can't disagree with them I'm not buying this at launch, it has such a sega cd FMV game vibe to it.
I'm getting it day one, but don't know how quickly I will start it. Gravity Rush 2 and especially Yakuza Zero are higher on my list and both are scheduled for the same time.
@FullbringIchigo
What were your thoughts on RE 6, out of curiosity?
Nah. Too many games releasing in that same period, and I'm still not sold on the direction this game is taking.
With that said, if it's good, I'll definitely pick it up eventually.
@Gamer83 honestly i enjoyed it, it was over the top and it did focus more on action than horror but with it's story i felt it worked
was it the best in the series, NO but it was decent enough for me
No chance lad
@FullbringIchigo
Ok. I didn't care for RE 6 myself and think a change was needed so I don't mind the direction they're going with 7. What I think is interesting is that, imo, the Revelations spinoffs are actually the better Resident Evil games at this point. They seem to marry elements of both classic and modern RE, and do so very well.
Haha Capcom, that's another good one. No way is this selling 4 million.
Hmm don't think so. I didnt like the demo. It was too grimy for me and resident evil (imo) should be 3rd person. Not sure I can get on board with it. In the past I would have been day one for a new resi but when Yakuza Zero is out on the same day, I know which I am buying
It's hard to overcome RE6... It's hands down my biggest disappointment last gen.
I like RE a lot but this game looks like Silent hill which I hate, so I'll skip probably.
You can do it, Capcom!! Don't think it'll be an "at launch" game for myself, though.. I prefer my first person survival horror games to be set in space with aliens and called Alien.
Maybe it would help if capcom revealed actual gameplay footage and in depth info on the game, instead of keeping it such a secret and just releasing teasers. Most people don't want to shell out $60+ to preorder or buy on launch day when they don't know exactly what they are buying.
I hope so. I guess im in the minority but i had stopped buying resi games after 4. Well not really true i kept buying but i just wasnt feeling them. Would play for a week and just move on. On the other hand im bias towards this type of horror game. Absolutely LOOOOVE them. This will be the 1st time in a long time that im certain ill be completely obsessed with and for one really crappin my pants while playing, figureatively speaking of course
I've played the demo and i almost peed in my pants.
Not for me this one, i'd only play this game on PSVR and I won't have one of them for quite some time.
@tonyp1987 I agree with you, just using the Resident Evil name to push what is basically a new IP.
