Here it is, folks - the day of reckoning is upon us. For months we've been meditating on Final Fantasy XV and the impact that it may have on the Japanese console scene - but now it's finally time to see how the blockbuster has performed over in the East.
Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy XV stormed to the top of the software charts, selling through 690,471 copies on PlayStation 4. Given the current Japanese market, that's a respectable amount, even though it shows a sharp decline when compared to the opening sales of Final Fantasy XIII. The last mainline single player Final Fantasy title, XIII shifted a whopping 1.5 million copies at launch. At this point, it does't look like home consoles will ever be able to recapture the Japanese masses. A sad state of affairs, but hey, times change.
The better news is that thanks to Final Fantasy XV, PS4 numbers rocketed by around 80,000 units, hitting a figure of 110,318 for the week. After a few weeks of Pokémon domination, Sony's system is back on top by quite some distance.
Of course, the question now is whether Final Fantasy XV will drop like a rock over the coming weeks, or stand strong near the summit.

FF will sell well on name recognition alone, like it always has.
Can't believe those XB1 FFXV numbers... (or maybe I can actually XD)
Maybe a hibrid like the Switch will be the answer for Japan. Almost 700k is great but not amazing for FF, and this is sad because japanese companies are back to the top with amazing games, like FF, P5, Ni no Kuni, Pokemon (probably the best gen), Dark Souls, and even SEGA and Capcom making a comeback. Except Konami, but yeah, screw Konami.
Slim outsell pro 12:1 ?
@Frank90 the culture in Japan for plus 25 year olds is all work and no play. In some regions they have zero space, zero time and zero chance to throw a console on, and lets be honest the 20-50 year old male demographic is who consoles are for. Its no surprise to me, and its no surprise Nintendos console mobile hybrid is their best chance at cracking the market which you have pointed out. Japans had its saturation point years ago, Sony realised this years ago concentrating on the West and these sales numbers are as good as could reasonably be expected.
@99miki Pro was never designed for the Japanese market really, so it's no surprise. They're struggling to flog the base model as it is, a premium version was never going to explode.
Pro is more for West.
The Xbone sells for FF are hilarious.
The fact that the Xbox One version of Final Fantasy XV actually managed to make it into the top 20 with sales of 3,800 copies is pretty dire.
@get2sammyb Nice to see you address the Japanese take on the Pro. Honestly, I can't imagine sales of 4k tvs over 55" is very brisk in Japan. More importantly for Sony in Japan, do you have any idea how PSVR is doing over there? I think Sony would be fine w/ Wii U like Pro sales if the 110k Slim sales had a PSVR attached or in their future. You can't really tell people - buy this new big screen TV for the Pro, now don't look at the tv, put on this visor instead. I think Japan is less consumer driven than the west.
@themcnoisy Yeah I agree with all you said, yet, isn't a good thing, and I certainly hope that this situation doesn't repeat itself in the west. I mean, I love handhelds and the 3ds is in my top 3 all time gaming devices, but consoles provide a kind of experience that handheld and, specially, mobile can't provide. Until switch, of course. (and Vita could not come even close to it).
@rjejr As I understand, PSVR is sold out globally. It's selling as well as the manufacturing output.
I wonder if Microsoft is ever just going to throw the towel in on Japan.
Surprised that World of Final Fantasy has already dropped out of top 20 given its on two formats. Its a fantastic game and deserves much better recognition.
Wow, that's a massive plummet. Final Fantasy used to sell well over 2 million copies for each and every instance. Then FF13 came along and ruined the reputation of the series. Will it ever recover anymore?
@Rob_230 You see, the Japanese aren't happy with the problems WoFF has on all those PS4 Pros they bought. Oh wait...
Hey Splatoon is back and it passed the 1.5 million mark. Stayed fresh!
@ShogunRok i'm not sure how much you think software sells in the UK, but it's pretty regular for games to make the top 20 with less than the XB1 sales of FFXV posted above. Driveclub VR made the top 20 with just 2400 odd.
people are making fun of ffxv xbox one sales..but what's really sad is that it's still in the top 20
It just occurred to me why does Pokemon Sun and Moon get grouped together? They are 2 separate games right?
