Well, apparently it’s already July, which means that half of 2017 has already gone. And what a six months it’s been on the PlayStation 4: the software schedule has been so strong that we really had to work to whittle down a list of the top ten titles – and even then we’ve included a bunch of honourable mentions because we couldn’t bear to ignore them. Without further ado, then, here are our favourite PS4 releases of the year so far.
10: Tekken 7
That final delay into the summer was a kicker for many, but few fighting game fans will argue that the wait hasn't been worth it. Tekken 7 marks a glorious return for Namco's beloved beat-'em-up series – a franchise that's been synonymous with PlayStation for over two decades. An incredibly tight and explosive combat system lays the foundation for one of the PS4's best brawlers.

9: Nioh
Nioh may wear its influences on its sleeve, but it stills stands as a fantastic action title. Combat is satisfyingly swift and deadly, and the game's Edo period setting gives it a classic Japanese flavour that infuses the adventure with an intriguing historical angle. Bloody and brutal, it's not an RPG for the faint of heart, but master its blades and you'll find a hugely rewarding release.
8: Nex Machina
Housemarque can do no wrong, and its collaboration with arcade icon Eugene Jarvis shows the Finnish firm at its twin-stick blasting best. A rip-roaring romp through a voxel-laden sci-fi universe, Nex Machina is simple on the surface but bursting with depth behind-the-scenes. Smart leaderboards which allow you to learn from the best players and insane production values put this right on par with the likes of Super Stardust HD and Resogun.
7: Injustice 2
The very definition of a successful sequel, Injustice 2 builds upon the first game brilliantly. A lengthy story mode and a huge selection of single player time sinks sit alongside solid online multiplayer options, resulting in a seriously robust fighter. It may not be the most punchy beat-'em-up on the market, but its accessibility and the sheer polish of the product make it a very easy recommendation for fans of fighters and super heroes alike.
6: Resident Evil VII: Biohazard
A return to form for an iconic franchise, Resident Evil VII: Biohazard introduces the Bakers – an unassuming Louisiana family transformed into homicidal maniacs. The environments, spanning marshy outhouses and abandoned hallways, are as much a part of the package’s character as any hero – and the restricted resources make for a pleasingly survival-driven experience. Plus, it’s impressive (and playable from start-to-finish) with PlayStation VR.
5: What Remains of Edith Finch
Walking simulators may be dime a dozen these days, but few are as inventive as What Remains of Edith Finch, the sophomore effort from The Unfinished Swan maker Giant Sparrow. With untimely deaths defining the Finch family tree, a series of fantasy vignettes await you, depicting each fatality in tragic (and, honestly, often comical) detail. This first-person adventure paints with a palette of emotions, and creativity abounds every minute of its two or three hour running time.
4: Yakuza 0
A prequel with one of the strongest storylines that the series has seen, Yakuza 0 follows a youthful Kazuma Kiryu as he attempts to break free of his gangster shackles. Conversely, second playable character Goro Majima is desperate to earn his way back into Japan's criminal underworld. A red light district full of intense brawls, horribly addictive minigames, and bizarre side stories beckons both veterans and newcomers alike.
3: NieR Automata
A game that needs to be played through three times to truly be appreciated may not sound like the best use of your time, but the payoff in NieR Automata is so worth it. As an open world RPG, it’s average at best – and even the character action aspect isn’t up to top-tier Platinum Games standards. But as oddball director Yoko Taro begins to experiment, this tale of oppressed androids really starts to shine – and it crescendos with a euphoric conclusion that’s as clever as it is compelling.
2: Horizon: Zero Dawn
Scepticism transformed into success: Guerrilla Games absolutely knocked it out of the park with Horizon: Zero Dawn – and birthed a major new brand in the process. Publishers will look back on Aloy’s inaugural adventure as a case study in how to launch new intellectual property: Sony got everything spot-on, from the marketing to the trickle-feed of gameplay footage. But at the heart of it all is a wonderful game, which marries robust action with quality story-telling.
1: Persona 5
The pinnacle of modern Japanese RPGs, Persona 5 refines the series' formula to near perfection, presenting one of the most cohesive, addictive, and downright masterful titles on Sony's system. An incredible cast of characters prop up a twisting tale of rebellion and youthful ideals which runs straight through a wonderfully worked gameplay loop. A mind-blowing sense of style tops it all off along with a stunning soundtrack.

it won't let me vote because it says i have to pick 3 options, and horizon zero dawn three times isn't an option. it's the only 2017 release that i've played (excluding demos), so the poll needs tweaked to allow only one or two choices.
@leucocyte Thanks! That should be fixed now.
I'm loving horizon zd right now. Feels so fresh and engaging, I put off playing it as not the biggest open world fan nor to heavy rpg elements. But this is pushing all the right buttons for me.
I went for Crash, Horizon and Persona 5. Very difficult choice in such a great year so far and sadly a few on the list I haven't had the time to play. To round out my top 5 I'd have Yakuza 0 and Resident Evil VII with Farpoint on the fringes, 2017 is turning into a vintage year
This list is why I appreciate the PlayStation brand. A large and diverse offering of games. There's something for everyone there.
1)Nier
2)Resi 7
The rest are to be decided..! Bring on the next 6 months!
Lots of games on this list I've not played, especially when you include the honourable mentions! I'm really interested in playing What Remains of Edith Finch, Crash Bandicoot, Everything, Gravity Rush 2, Night in the Woods, and The Sexy Brutale. It's been an absolutely crazy year for games so far.
I voted for Horizon, WipEout and Yakuza 0
I haven't played a huge amount of 2017 games yet. Still havent finished up Resident Evil 7 and got Night in the Woods to play. Once I have finished my currently horrendous addiction to Bloodborne I will be waiting for Hellblade and then UC.
Also intersted in Nier and Nioh but I just don't see me getting to them this year.
@lacerz Yeah, it's amazing really. You can have two people of polar opposite tastes but they'll both find something they really like on this page.
1)RE7
2) Persona 5
3) Farpoint
Persona 5 was a very good game. The drawback was that it was too repetetive. For instance every time you killed off an enemy the same completely unnecessary animation and score appeared. Very irritating in the long run - after all it was an enormous game.
I don't care what wins this, but one thing is fact;
Protecting Michael Jackson moonwalking from attackers whilst performing thriller with Steven Spielberg directing, is by far the best mission this year. Yakuza Zero ftw.
I was just thinking about this earlier today and I made a list of my favourites:
1- The Sexy Brutale
2- Horizon Zero Dawn
3- Forma.8
4- Nex Machina
5- Statik
6- Snake Pass
7- The Flame in the Flood: Complete Edition
8- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
9- Korix
10- Wipeout: Omega Collection
Gravity rush 2 , Nioh and Horizon for me
#1 Persona 5
#2 Horizon Zero Dawn
#3 What Remains Of Edith Finch
This top 10 is legit
I choose nier automata, persona 5, and horizon zd with gravity rush 2 as runner-up. 2017 is amazing year for ps4.
Persona 5 is easily my favorite PS4 game so far. 110 hours clocked in, the years long wait was definitely worth it.
Crash and Tekken are good too. But Persona pulls way ahead.
@themcnoisy
I'm surprised so many rates Yakuza 0. For me it was the disappointment of the year. It got great reviews and all, but it wasn't my type of game. Button smashing game.
I was ready the entire article to jokingly tell you that you were wrong, but then I saw you correctly put Persona 5 as #1 😂
Great year for games so far. Haven't played all of these so far - cant wait to play more!
Persona 5
NiOh
Horizon Zero Dawn
Honorable mentions:
Gravity Rush 2, Nier Automata and Yakuza 0
The scary thing about this list is that I havent managed to pick up even half of the ones I want yet, and it is only July. Persona 5 is the pinnacle of JRPG goodness and everything I love about the genre. It was a shoo in for my no 1; and will no doubt be my game of the year (and possibly generation). Still debating whether I actually prefer the story of persona 4 though.
Yakuza 0 comes next for being bat crazy and great fun, never taking itself too seriously ; and for being a great intro to the series for newcomers.
And horizon has to come third. It achieved everything it set out to and more, and it proved alot of naysayers wrong who said guerilla could never produce something with such heart.
Tekken and wipeout have both been great additions to my library.
Still to buy nier, resident evil, gravity rush; so looking forward to playing through those, and will probably pick up the Kh games at some point too. Hopefully amazon prime day will offer some good prices on at least one of these!
Surprised Valkyria Revolution didnt make your shortlist
3) Nier Automata; 2) Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 etc; 1) Crash Bandicoot trilogy
I couldn't stand Persona 5. Restricted, antiquated gameplay, last-gen visuals, and yet everyone's saying it's the future of JRPGs! I really hope not.
Edit: I still have yet to play a lot of these, especially Horizon
You forgot Elite Dangerous! I can't put it down.
I'm so happy Atlus is starting to get the recognition it deserves. It's EASILY the best modern JRPG dev. Its output helped make the PS2 and 3DS great, and Persona 5 really is the best game in the series to date.
Anyway, Persona 5 and Gravity Rush 2 are the only ones I voted for. I nabbed Yakuza 0, but have yet to play it, and I plan on getting Nier: Automata and Resident Evil 7 at some point. No interest whatsoever in Horizon.
Crash
Resident Evil
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Friday the 13th, Injustice 2, Crash, Discjam, Wipeout, some truly mint releases so far. Bad games like Everything, For Honor, Life of the Black Tiger et al deserve at least a bit of praise for effort and risk taking.
When you have polls where you can pick multiple answers, you might not want to put that the bottom of the list.
For me atm it's just For Honor as I've just bought Injustice 2 yesterday so not played too much yet but to say I don't really like fighters (mainly because I'm crap at them😂) I'm really enjoying it. Sticking to single player though as I can't get a move in against some people online so know it's not even worth bothering with. Still to get Horizon but I will definitely be getting it at some point so could end up in the top 3 but that's all for me so far.
I went with Horizon, Neir Automata and nex machina. I tried crash demo and didn't like it. I want to get wipeout omega collection at some point. I assume the price will drop soon on wipeout. I replayed aloy of games this yr or picked up old games at Bargain basement price.
Gravity Rush 2 was robbed.
None of the games mentioned here would make it into my top 10.
I couldn't have made the list much better myself. Resident Evil 7, Nex Machina, and Persona 5 were my top 3 for the year and were all phenomenal. 2017 has been a great year for gaming, and it's not even over yet!
@Hengist Bummer.
Persona, Nier, Gravity Rush
I have P5, Horizon and Nier but haven't touched any of them. Probably the only PS4 game of 2017 that I have played is the always overlooked Hatsune Miku Future Tone.
Persona 5 for me, absolutely stunning RPG.
The best year of this gen by a mile, the quality has been fantastic and we finally got an excellent, story-heavy, NEW IP (something severely lacking on both PS4 and Xbox One to this point) in Horizon: Zero Dawn. In the poll I selected Yakuza 0, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Resident Evil VII: biohazard. If I were doing a top five, the other two games I'd add are Injustice 2 and NieR: Automata. Gravity Rush 2 and MLB The Show 17 are two great games that deserve and honorable mention.
Horizon Zero Dawn is easily my #1 this year and it might be my favorite game this gen. It's close between Horizon and The Witcher.
@Hengist Wow, not a single one? What's your top ten, then?
Where's the love for, Torment: Tides of Numenera? An amazing story driven rpg. Yes, you have to read a lot, but the stories or so imaginative and well written. It would be my number 1 so far this year.
I have Horizon, Wipeout Omega, and Crash, but I haven't played the first two much due to Breath of the Wild, and I've been on a trip since getting Crash. Will play them at some point though.
@Splat - I know I'm in the minority here, but Witcher 3 was a massive disappointment for my tastes; laborious combat, text set at -100 font size, over-emphasis on story, not enough on combat.
Horizon, whilst ripping off entire shreds of Shadow of the Collosus, Assassins Creed & Far Cry, seamlessly blended AAA action with a beautiful sandbox full of decent side missions - and a cracking story.
Horizon game of the year from me, but remembering my Paul Phoenix 10-hit combo from Tekken 3 on Tekken 7 is right up there as for 2017 🤛
3.) Yakuza 0
2.) Nioh
1.) Horizon: Zero Dawn
What an outstanding year and we are pretty much just in the beggining of the 7. month.
Best time to be player
Honestly PS4 has been kind of weak this year, Nier Automata didn't really do anything for me and Tekken 7, while decent, feels like a downgrade from TTT2 in many aspects.
Though I haven't yet played Persona 5 or Yakuza 0, those might change my opinion. And I am incredibly hyped for the FF12 remake.
Still playing The Witcher (began in March) , I own Horizon ZD , will probably begin that around November at my current rate.
@Elodin saw a physical copy a while back. might have to pick that one up soon
1 hzd
2 nier automata
3 gravity rush 2
I feel like gravity rush 2 is one of the best game this year especially gameplay wise. Best storyline has to go nier automata and best all around and game of the year candidate horizon zero dawn. Can't wait for the dlc to be release this year
For Honor 0% makes me laugh
@Peder get out of here before I call Kiryu
@get2sammyb
Dunno if my imagination can stretch to a full 10 at the moment, but off the top of my head, titles such as; DiRT 4, Elite Dangerous and Sniper Elite 4 spring to mind.
I'm also looking forward to next month and my pre-order of Codename Panzers... err, I mean; Sudden Strike 4 arriving.
Nier Automata is really good but I've only done 1 playthrough so I won't count it.
So far mine are:
3) Gravity Rush 2
2) Horizon Zero Dawn
1) Little Nightmares
There are still a bunch of games I haven't gotten round to playing like Outlast 2, RE7 and Nioh.
What Remains of Edith Finch is my GOTY so far. It is such a well told and emotional tale. I have not experienced the feelings that it left me with since Journey.
Horizon Zero Dawn and Nex Machina are close behind though. The latter has the same ridiculously addictive gameplay loop as Resogun. I cannot get enough of it.
@hellteacherloki definitely do, you won't regret it.
The games coming second half of the year has big hurdle to overcome! Will any of them beat Horizon:ZD & Persona 5?
Great list, and Persona 5 in first is the cherry on the cake.
Can not agree more, Horizon is great, but Persona is another level of polish.
#3 Injustice 2 #2 Persona 5 & the winner #1 Horizon ZD
Horizon has easily been the best game of the year for me and I can't see anything else surpassing it.
The only other game on this list that (vaguely) appeals is Nioh but personally, I think the first 6months has been very 'disappointing' but at least its enabled me to save money and work on some of my backlog of games.
Before anyone decides to argue and try and tell me the year has been 'great', this is MY personal opinion and I have little/no interest in 95% of the games here!
Horizon for me. Loved it. No interest in the others.
There's not much for me for the rest of the year either. Only PCars2 if it's any good, and maybe FIFA18 as a filler - haven't bought one for years. Pretty much all of what I'm waiting on is next year onward.
