As expected, Monster Hunter: World has taken Japan by storm. The series has always been an absolute juggernaut in its native region, and World only solidifies that status -- clearly Monster Hunter doesn't need to be exclusive to a handheld device in order to sell incredibly well.
The game shifted a whopping 1.25 million copies on PlayStation 4 during its opening weekend at retail. Capcom should be more than happy with that, especially since it's proven hugely popular here in the West, too, with the publisher stating it's shipped around 5 million units worldwide.
Of course, the release of such a huge hit also impacted the hardware charts, where the PS4 shot straight to number one. Sony's system moved 140,000 units across the standard model and the PS4 Pro. That's more than every other platform combined for the week.
Now we just wait and see how long Monster Hunter: World can stick it out at the top of the pile.

Wow incredible numbers!
The king is dead, long live the king
Unless Bayonetta is popular in Japan... no yeah there’s Dissidia NT Final Fantasy but I don’t expect that to take down Monster Hunter... it will push PS4’s momentum tho. Kirby will break MH World’s momentum but even then that’s almost TWO MONTHS of dominance. I think PS4 is sure to sell another million or at worst half a million during said momentum period...
But it does make things interesting since Nintendo had Japanese dominance for a while.
capcom can't be happy with those numbers.
Wooo, those are fantastic sales! Well deserved.
Where's Dragonball FighterZ though? Is it having a different release date in Japan or what's going on?
@JAMes-BroWWWn Dragon Ball actually released earlier here in the West than it did in Japan, which is very rare. It only launched in Japan yesterday.
@manu0 you're joking right
@manu0 c'mon it's the best selling ps4 title in Japan since the console launch...in 3 days!
@Feena @dark_knightmare2 look at the numbers MH did on 3DS in Japan..it's not even close.
@manu0 First week sales for Monster Hunter X in Japan were 1.49 million. It's not enormously behind, especially when we don't know digital sales
@manu0 yeah and look at the numbers mh has done worldwide it's not even close
Very impressive numbers, seems like the jump to ps4 was worth it.
@dark_knightmare2 @mookysam @manu0 @Feena I said this in the other article, but slightly lower Japanese sales are pretty much irrelevant.
World will more than make up for any dropped sales in Japan by selling well here in the West. Capcom would much rather have 5 million global sales in one weekend if it meant seeing Japanese sales drop by a small amount.
In short, Capcom's outdone itself.
@manu0 When Monster Hunter X released already 20 million 3DS's were sold in Japan. The PS4 sold only about... around 5 million in Japan I think. So, these numbers are really good actually.
Especially if you consider digital sales making up a much larger piece of the pie as well for PS4 than for 3DS.
@ShogunRok I agree. Capcom wanted to grow the franchise in the West and they've massively succeeded in that regard. Replying to manu0 as just was wasn't sure how it could be seen as a disappointment in Japan.
Looks like MH:W was a massive win for Capcom and Sony all around. Which pretty much guarantees a continued home console presence for the series going forward.
It would've been interesting to see what numbers Monster Hunter XX for Switch would've got if Capcom had just localized it.
I'm loving World by the way so either way it's no problem for me which console the series continues to be made for here on out.
Pretty sweet hardware sales and let's keep in mind that it already got a hardware boost the previous weeks.
@Fooligan I hope the success of World would persuade Capcom to localize XX. If it weren't for World, I would have totally bought a Switch just for XX. Now, it would be fairly difficult to go back to that build of MH.
@manu0 you do realize you're talking about a handheld and a living room console right?? A house with 4 people can get 4 3DS with each a copy of Monster Hunter X while it's really unlikely to see more than 2 ps4 in a single house and in japan Handheld gaming is really popular.
I still don`t get buying a console just for one game (no matter how good it is)
@premko1 personally I believe if you get a console for one game w no interest in anything upcoming or previously released you’re a FOOL
So that's about 0.4~5 million (ish) behind MH4 opening sales in Japan, but given the worldwide sales, and i'm assuming higher price point on PS4 compared to 3DS, the 'slight' calculated gamble has massively paid off. Timed the move spot on in my opinion as everybody knows 3DS is in the twilight of it's life.
140k on hardware is very impressive for end Jan!
Did i read wrong is did MH W sell 5x the amount of TOTAL MHXX in one week?
Quite a monster jump in hardware sales. The gap between MHW and the second place is gigantic too.
Hoping greedy Capcom is happy with this sales. Not sure how many people will keep playing it or if more casual players wont stand the learning curve and drop it though.
@3Above Only if you ignore the 2DS/3DS version. The NS version of Monster Hunter XX did very poorly on Monster Hunter standards. You need to look at the 2DS/3DS release to see the full picture:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/03/japanese_sales_charts_ps4_steady_in_slow_week_for_playstation
On 2DS and 3DS, Monster Hunter XX did 1,128,760 in two weeks, and a lot more after that obviously. So yes, that still means that Monster Hunter World already blew apart MHXX sales, even on 2DS/3DS. MHW sold more at launch than MHXX did in two weeks. It's a massive success.
While I'm glad Capcom has a successful title on their hands, MH has never interested me in the slightest after my first experience with it. I honestly wish they made more appealing games these games. All I buy from them is Resident Evil/Biohazard...
Great start for MHW. Will be interesting to see the long-term performance.
@Fooligan What would have been the if they made it multiplatform.
@EVIL-C You dont like Dragon Dogma i cant take you serious anymore.
@Flaming_Kaiser Haven't played it.
@Mahe Thanks for the clarification!
It'll do well on word of mouth as well here in the west. I'd never played a monster Hunter game before this one, but thanks to a certain group of "tw**s" raving about it I picked it up. 8 hours in and I'm totally hooked.
