The new God of War game is the series’ fastest selling entry in the UK – and that’s despite data tracking only a couple of days’ worth of physical sales. In terms of purely boxed units, it outsold God of War III by 35 per cent, but it’s worth remembering that digital sales have increased dramatically in recent years, so the split between the two titles is likely much larger.
Far Cry 5 remains the biggest launch of the year in Britain, but is obviously available on two platforms. Ubisoft's open worlder inevitably fell down to second place after three consecutive weeks at the summit. God of War has already outsold Sony’s other major 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive Shadow of the Colossus – and it wasn’t even available at Amazon UK for a good couple of weeks.
There’s more glad tidings for new releases: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life also enjoyed its biggest ever launch at UK retail, beating last year’s Yakuza: Kiwami by 300 units. While it’s a positive result for the property, we can’t help but feel that Kiryu’s crime saga could have performed a little better in its previous release window, where it wasn’t overshadowed by Kratos et al.

Fallout 4?
@themcnoisy Must have been on sale.
It's Sunday? Why is this here now?
God of War has been a pretty poor performer in the UK, so I think this is reasonable growth, but I'd like to see it with digital data attached, too.
I imagine a good number of people went digital given the trouble with AmazonUK.
Still pretty good for GOW and Yakuza 6!
Doesn't Sony give numbers at the end of April or something?
@Hapuc Yearly financial results, for most companies actually
@Hapuc Yeah, but we'll probably get PR for God of War specifically next week.
@Spectra It's growing a bit but... Well, SEGA didn't want to localise Yakuza 5 so it's very niche. It's been on an uptick since Yakuza 0, but it's never going to be competing with Far Cry or God of War, obviously.
@Spectra Yakuza could be a gta beater if Sega sorted themselves out.
@themcnoisy GTA beater might be a bit strong!
@kyleforrester87 @themcnoisy They actually went really big with the first one in the West. They did a full English dub and everything, going after the GTA crowd.
The rest is history.
@get2sammyb Who can forget Mark Hamill as Majima?
I figured God of War would sell well, but I'm really glad to see Yakuza 6 up on the chart.
@DLB3 To be fair, there'll be more people playing Fortnite than both of those combined. Doesn't mean they can't all be successful in their own rights, though.
@get2sammyb so can I safely assume british people have bad taste? xD
@AFCC Bad teeth, yes. Bad taste, have you seen burberry?
British teeth really are the worst. We deserve our stereotype.
glad to see god of war sitting on the throne!
it's an amazing game.
may be too soon but i'm already looking forward to the next instalment. aslong as it stays 100% SP. (cough ascension cough)
GoW at number 1 is to be expected but glad Yakuza 6 charted well, hopefully Sega will be happy with the sales.
Good to see Yakuza hold up in the midst of GoW
It sounds liked you have numbers, but the article doesn’t have the sales.
Awesome news though.
@Jaz007 Unfortunately that information is kept secret, but from what I've seen speculated around the web, God of War is just shy of 90k units. No digital.
@jdv95 No Ascension is a myth i does not exist 😉
I only have two physical releases. Robinson: A Journey and Farpoint. Every other purchase is digital, including God of War.
Have to imagine God of War did big numbers digitally. Sony's been promoting it on the store for months, and a lot of the game's adverts have pointed directly to the store as well. As mentioned, the game being unavailable on Amazon probably contributed to a decent amount of digital sales too.
These charts really do have to start tracking them. If we're not at that point next-gen then they're basically going to be useless.
No surprise.god of war is the best.word up son
Great news. Will be interesting to see how God of War does in the April NPD. It's usually been a strong seller over here in NA.
@Hapuc Sony teleconference for full year 2017 financials is April 27th. Guess that's Japan so maybe late Thursday our time.

I guess we'll hear all kinds of GoW numbers, and PS4 lifetime sales, which they haven't announced since December, so it may be over 80m by now, it was 72 or 73m back then. PS3 is currently at 83m so it probably hasn't reached that yet. Curious if we get Pro numbers, they tend not to but the GoW bundle may give them something to talk about.
@Gamer83 I bought it day 1 which goes against everything I believe in so I'm guessing the US sales won't suck, will crush Ascension and could even beat 3 which I think had to deal with bad reviews of it being only 6 hours long.
Of course the great unknown is the download number and %. I bought on disc as usual but I think it probably sold well on digital. But then again a lot of people have Prime and BB GCU. And that physical model bundle wasn't outrageous, but I'm not sure how limited that would be.
But if Labo beats it out - no downloads allowed - that would be hysterical. 😉
It's great to see Yakuza 6 there as well, it could be even better if it wasn't released on the same week of another huge exclusive.
I'm also really happy for God of War, this amazing game deserves all the great sales. That's what happened when God of War released:
@rjejr
I get the Best Buy discounts so I always buy physical. I'm sure the game is going to huge numbers both physical and digital, will just be interesting to see how it compares to the original 3 (agree is should eclipse Ascension, fairly easily). As far as Labo possibly out-selling it, wouldn't shock me at all, there's a larger audience it can reach than an M-rated game.
@get2sammyb I read somewhere that the charts will have digital figures from next year. Not sure why it is taking so long though.
this might sound dumb, but when can we expect a discount guys? i guess in 3 months right?
GTA 5 barely in Top 10? What parallel world is this? XD
Great to see Yakuza 6 having a big launch. Hopefully its sales will continue to do well, and not just dissipate.
Nice to see Yakuza 6 in a podium spot. As Sammy says in the article, though, it needed more time to shine on its own, as God of War will have muted its sales, no doubt. Still, great week! Interested to see the numbers for God of War.
Why are the digital sales not included? Is it harder to get specifics for them?
Good to see Yakuza doing well, and I've actually seen adverts for Yakuza 6 which is something I never thought I'd see.
@get2sammyb they need tell us if God of War surpass 3 millions copies sold
@Gamer83 " there's a larger audience it can reach than an M-rated game."
Well that's true, but PS4 sales are 75m, Switch at 15m, in the US it's PS4 26m, Switch 6m, so the current install base is 4x as large. And I think more of those GoW fans will be ready Day 1 than Labo fans. Labo has been heavily promoted by Ntinedo standards, which range from zero to none, but probably 3/4 of the people who will buy Labo this Christmas haven't even heard of it yet. Feels like a "soft launch" to me, just getting it out there, in it for the long haul. It's not a game, it's a long term subscription service.
But I'm still curious.
@rjejr
Labo will be huge over the holidays, no doubt, and by that time Switch sales will have grown further in the U.S. It depends on advertising but just given the nature of the product, I see it doing big-time numbers, probably more than God of War over the long haul but you're talking about a game vs. something that's more of an accessory with a wider range of appeal. I'm not interested in it myself but I was never a huge fan of legos, even as a kid, and this thing is somewhat of a similar concept.
@Gamer83 I think by Christmas they'll have a few more sets out that they showed in some trailers, a gun and a birdhouse, sets they can sell for $20 or $30 instead of $70 or $80.
And no, it isn't really for anyone except "tweens", I'm getting it to get my kids out of the house. Build it outside and throw the scraps right into the fire pit. They can build 1 a week over the summer.
@get2sammyb @YummyHappyPills Well, no I haven't and I have no clue what you are saying lol
I'm a dentist now so if it wasn't for brexit I could go help you guys
@jdv95 The sales aggregation firm doesn't compile them yet. They're getting added in next year I believe. Long overdue.
@rjejr Im getting it because im a programmer Bob. You know your argument is false.
Anyway as @Gamer83 says Labo will sell more in the long run. Its a platform with multiple SKUs versus one single game.
@YummyHappyPills My arguments are never false, just misinterpreted. Alternate facts FTW.
@rjejr Oh dear God not you too!
Ah well, different markets aint it? I'll get GoW in time, money is just tight and I want to finish to original trilogy first. Need to find copies of 1 and 2 and in the UK that's a needle in a haystack...at least in my area with no game stores
Why has God of War not been historically popular in Great Britain? No interest in mythology? Because it’s 1-player only? Or too much blood and guts (or lack of interest in hack n slash)? Too “story driven” and gamers there don’t care for cinematic-type experiences? In the US, GOW has always been popular so I’m curious.
Also, why are teeth bad in England? Is dental work not part of the universal healthcare or is it tough to get in to see the dentist? Or just shoddy dentists nationwide? Again, just curious. I’m in Minnesota, and teeth here are good, but I went to my sister company a few years ago in an inner city location in Nashville, Tennessee, and lots of people there were missing teeth, and the ones who weren’t had random gold teeth—whites and blacks, men and women. I’m just a dumb white guy; you just don’t see things like that in southern Minnesota. I don’t know why these things are what they are, and, it’s a bit off topic, but I’m curious.
Yakuza deserved to do well, nice to see it sold better than Kiwami.
@YummyHappyPills Hmm Hmm it will be interesting too see how they fared.
@rjejr Yeah I'm interested in Pro sales too I wanna see does the console even have 10% of install base.
@Hapuc How what fared, and where? If you mean Labo, we find out about Japan on Wednesday, along with God of War. For the US, it'll be middle of next month for both, and for the UK, we won't see Labo sales until next Monday.
@jgrangervikings1 Jim Ryan (Sony big wig) said that Hack n’ Slash games don’t tend to sell ‘well’ in general in EU compared to the US. One of the reasons why GOW changed up the formula.
As to why...I don’t know. Uncharted 4 & Horizon also performed better in EU than the US, so maybe it’s more of a culture thing?
GOW3 was all physical so I’d assume GOW PS4 is looking at ~40% growth (+digital) in one of its weakest markets.
I’m sure once the official WW sales are out, we’ll be looking at a new juggernaut.
@YummyHappyPills Opps misspelled I meant how will they fare.
@rjejr
I am one of those weirdos who got both day one and I don't have any kids.
Loving GoW, should be getting Labo around Saturday.
Off topic but my Q Bert seems to be broken. Sound skips sometimes and now the classic game controls correctly. Remake is not that bad but doing three rounds of the same layout gets old fast.
@sinalefa Well we already knew you were weird, you get along with me.
I still think Nintedo missed out by not making a cardboard axe attached to a Joycon that reacted with rumble and noise when you waved it around. I'm expecting a YT video of one any day now. Or at least the Master Sword.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah replace it with it should.
Still funny to hear people pay €70 for cardboard. This is stuff i wont get for sure takes up a lot of room and after a few times of it will probably get thrown in a closet. 😁 😋
So happy to see God Of War at No1 it's definitely 2018 GOTY.
