Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is being published by Activision, and that seems to have left FromSoftware fans paranoid. The pre-order page for the exciting samurai adventure includes the note “in-game purchases optional” on the PlayStation Store – and perhaps unsurprisingly it’s prompted a slew of “pre-order cancelled” posts on forums around the world.
Except we’ve seen this kind of controversy before. A quick glance at the pre-order pages for several other upcoming titles on the PS Store includes the same kind of language, suggesting that it's most likely stock text – but even if it’s not, we don’t know the extent of what Sekiro’s microtransactions could be. Maybe it’s just some extra costumes or something, in which case, who really cares?

Jim Sterling's making a video as we type.
Joker - And here we go
@get2sammyb i can already hear him say 'AAA'
I don't care if it's cosmetic, it's still part of the game. It's From Software game MT need to be left out. I might cancel my pre-order if Activision doesn't back off or clarify that it won't have any. I remember when you unlocked cosmetics instead of paying for them. I want those days back so bad.
It’s frickin Activision, of course it will have.
Oh Activision, I'd say never change, but you never will.
As soon as I saw Activision's logo at the end of the E3 trailer, I knew some thing was gonna happen. And here we are, cause it's Activision and it's a 99% chance that it's true.
In any case, I'm happy I don't buy much of AV's products anymore.
@CK97 As per community rules
Do not use profanity; Use of unsavoury language including profanity and swearing is not acceptable, please remember that this website has users of all ages.
So let's watch the language ok.
@Danloaded That's the only way I read 'AAA' anymore, and I don't really mind it to be honest.
Did everyone miss the part in the article where I mentioned that tons of other pre-order pages use the exact same language?
DQ11 for example says the exact same thing. Does that really have microtransactions in it? Maybe someone who imported can confirm.
@get2sammyb I never heard anything about MTX in Dragon Quest. I don't think there is, unless they add it into the localisation, which is EXTREMELY unlikely.
@get2sammyb I saw that but the name Activision creates an air of uncertainty and distrust particularly after Destiny 2 and the debacle that was Modern Warfare remastered. I rarely pre-order now but I definitely wouldn't from them 😉. Then again at least they're not trying to sell me extra characters before selling me the game or removing weapons for "realism" only to resell them afterwards.
I take it back, they're all crooks 😆😆😆
Activision resold modern warfare HD and then sold the DLC separately for $5 more than it cost on the original release. Then they added crates. Also you had to buy Infinite warfare to get it for a full year.
Spyro HD collection only has 1 game on the disc.
I'm fully prepared to believe in any form of greed activision is accused of on the basis of prior behaviour.
Fighting for worst spot right next to EA. I hate Activision for what they did to spyro...
Guess we'll see what happens when we get closer to release.
As Sammy mentioned, if it's just basic text that's added to pre-orders on the PSN Store, it can always be changed closer to release by the devs.
@get2sammyb "and perhaps unsurprisingly it’s prompted a slew of “pre-order cancelled” posts on forums around the world..."
...mostly from people who hadn't yet pre-ordered the game. 😉
I kind of feel like "pre-order canceled" is the gaming equivalent of "your mother".
Maybe its nothing, but activision is the company that release cod remaster with addded microtransaction, so yeah, its better to wait for the reviews rather than blindly preordering it because its made by from software.
Honestly, I’m at the point where I have a healthy backlog and there are so many good releases coming out over the next year, that one of my criteria going forward is going to be to withdraw my support (at least launch and early release purchase support) of games with microtransactions and launch content locked behind a post-purchase extra paywall. I realize this game may not have MT, but it is suspicious, unfortunately. There are plenty of games to choose from that aren’t selling you a suboptimal or incomplete product for $60.
Was looking forward to this but not so much now I rarely buy dlc out of principal and never entertain micro transactions thanks Activision.... NOT
@get2sammyb lol you know it
@sonicmeerkat to be fair they remade modern warfare and it looked great it wasn’t just a little difference it was massive
Firstly, why pre-order a game from a major AAA publisher anyway when you have six months to go? They aren't going to run out of copies. Secondly, no hoo ha until we know the facts. Almost all games seem to have this message now.
@VotesForCows Definitely. I actually pre_order the day before it comes out (to get the crummy bonuses). But only for games that i know won't be a bug infested mess... Like an Ubisoft open world game lol
@Rudy_Manchego
Collectors Editions.
So many drama llamas. Maybe wait for something a bit more concrete before overreacting.
@get2sammyb amazing. Was just thinking the same thing
Overexaggeration from gamers as usual. No surprise here. They seem to care more about finding something to be offended by than the actual games.
Jim Sterling is going to love this.
@get2sammyb Jim Sterling has some nice video's but sometimes he is just a idiot. 😁
@stuzster With fighting games its really bad lately putting main characters behind a paywall. Tekken and with Soul calibur and some even half the roster its just terrible but then i just dont buy the game.
@dark_knightmare2 Come on dont defend this 🤬 they block of half the games they sell. Destiny1/2 shows how far they try to take it. They made lootboxes a new thing with Overwatch. Yeah they are worst a remake with a seasonpass and lootboxes and microtransactions... 😑 Keep defending those scumbags at Activision Blizzard. 😕😔
Comment section confirms people don't read the article, just the headline. smh
This is why I'm not going anywhere near this game because Activision is publishing it, hence they will definitely screw this game up with BS microtransactions. If from Software is going along with this then I no longer have any faith in them as a developer, they are one of the very few devs I keep an eye out for whenever they announce a new game, but this Activision team crap may end that forever. I will never trust From Software again if they allow Activision to ruin this game with their BS monetization schemes.
Maybe it was added as a precaution until more details about the game are released? It might be removed at a later date.
I really hope from software has much more leverage over Activision than the other way around. I will not buy it if it has any microtransactions.
@LaNooch1978 I hope so. I'm fine with dlc as long as the main game is complete.
@Flaming_Kaiser no I wasn’t defending them they do a lot of scummy crap that I agree with I was just saying the modern warfare rerelease wasn’t just a remaster it was a full blown remake and a damn good one when talking about the graphics
£5 for a humanity. 3 for £13.99
@get2sammyb That’s why I said “or clarify”. The issue is that there shouldn’t be a question. I imagine Activision will update saying it won’t have any soon.
Yeah I'm not bothering with it anyway. Soon as I saw it was another samurai game I was immediately turned off. I got halfway through nioh and couldn't be bothered, I know it's good and all but the aesthetic just leaves me cold tbh.
@LaNooch1978 I thought thats what i said. But sometimes he rants with a lot of nonsense. Great stuff and sometimes he is going on about nothing. 😉
@DLB3 Sorry but it is Blizzard Activision its not strange to be sceptic with these
🤬ers. 😝
Slews of "pre-orders cancelled" posts have a history of prompting "thank goodness" and "good riddance" from me. Although it'll be ironic if the IAPs actually prove to be just a mistake with the autopilotesque description template. I've seen my share of perplexing stuff on PS Store (especially Vita pages), so I can't say I would be completely surprised.
Well I am still super excited for Sekiro personally. I buy 2 or 3 games a month and I have only experienced one game that was adversly affected by in-game purchases, that game being the last Mordor game.
In general, I have managed to enjoy every game just fine without using micro transactions and I am sure Sekiro will be no different. Anyway, I prefer to know something as a matter if fact before I waste any effort being upset about it.
@Jaz007
Spider-Man for PS4 comes out on Sept 7th and has loads of unlockable costumes that even give you new abilities
@jswhitfield8
But sometimes by pre-ordering a digital game they give you a limited edition static theme and then just release a free animated theme that looks exactly the same....cough Watchdogs 2 cough
