The PlayStation 5 -- as it's now officially known -- will launch in the holiday period of 2020. A new Wired interview with Sony Interactive Computer Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirms this. Obviously we already knew that the Japanese giant was aiming for this release window anyway, but it's nice to have it officially reiterated.
We don't have a full release date yet, though, and we'd be surprised if we hear anything more concrete before next year. It's still unclear whether Sony is planning a big reveal event for the PS5, but it's always seemed likely. In any case, 2020 is going to be an exciting year for PlayStation fans.
Still, it's time to start saving up for the next-gen machine. Will you be there to buy it day one? Break open your piggy bank in the comments section below.

Where's it going on holiday? I need to book my ticket ASAP.
Soooo, does that mean next winter?
i'm guessing end of november early december.
I will have to get my son one before me
@nessisonett almost definitely yes. I'd be shocked if it wasn't another November release.
Going to start saving up this week, always love console launches!!
here's hoping they will produce extra units to avoid the outsold launch problem of the ps4.
Day one, definitely.
@redd214 This confused me as holidays mean november/december in US but here in my country June till August
@Sanquine oh interesting! Yeah since the were speaking to a US based pub and it being one of if not the biggest sales territories for them, I'd just assume he meant around November/December 2020.
I knew it.ps5 in 2020 make sense.20 is my π basketball number when i used to play basketball on my team.2020 is going to be legendary.give me sly cooper 5 word up son
Hopefully I can get a pre-order in when they go up.
@Deadlyblack if it's anything like the ps4 launch i might have to stay up all day and night and refresh my prefered online store the day pre orders go live just to be sure i'm in for day 1
i can't see them announcing any prices til at least next summer, since they'll need to see how trump's trade war with china pans out and whether electronics like consoles will face high tariffs, and to see how the already troubled sterling pans out after brexit.
i'll be very surprised if they can get an RRP under Β£500.
I'm off to Pontins and Butlin's next year so which holiday will it be released?
@jdv95 Id be surprised. Its a common sales tactic to create the impression of success. I'm not saying it wont be - im extremely confident in PS5 the more i hear (fingers crossed on the price) - but i think they are counting on pre-orders and the ability to talk about sell-outs globally as part of the marketing.
My advice would be, if you want to get one at launch, get that pre-order in (not with someone like Game though!!) Once they go live
Cant wait. So excited!
Christmas 2020 was pretty much expected. Only Nintendo would launch a console in March.
I'll most likely wait for a first discount or a strong reason to buy a PS5, like HZD or Nier Automata Sequel because there is little chance a new Zelda or Xenoblade chronicles would launch with the PS5.
Am I buying one Day One, you ask, PushSquare? Nah. Even though the launch of a new console is pretty much always exciting, I prefer to wait at least a year or two into the life cycle to get one. My PS4 will serve me well for the next few years. All the early production bugs of the new hardware should be worked out by then.
Day one so I can play the new factions game. Really like what I've read about the new controllers.
PS5 - check
holiday 2020 - check
No surprises so far. Kind of surprised they officially announced it's releasing next holiday, could put a damper on holiday sales for PS4 this year. Could mean some good sales, maybe even on Pro. I could see picking up a 2nd PS4 for a bedroom for $199 this holiday but not $400 for a Pro w/ PS5 12 months out w/ it's backwards compatibility.
Maybe Sony only cares about hitting 100m sales then on to PS5?
Day two. Just because I'm cool like that.
i bet its gonna be very expensive and will sell out in minutes after its been put out in the shops. and it will take at least 6months to have all shops full worldwide after xmas. i am in no stress getting a ps5, most likely gonna get one in 2021 and it will be a improved revision too.
Still need pricing details and launch titles but as long as the price isn't crazy, I'll be getting this day one.
@crazykcarter I know what you mean, bro. I have a 12 year old, and just had a baby boy last Sunday. I am surprised by the amount of games I can't find the time to play. Some great games I don't even begin with, because I know I won't have the time to dive in and actually advance in it. Probably I'll be getting the slim (and cheeper) version of the PS5
YES!!! day one buy for me PS5 is comingπ π π
I'm starting to save Β£30 monthly for the PS5! I'll be there in my PJs.
@Turismo4GT
Same here. I've only just bought the PRO in hopes that early PS5 games will also be available for PS4 PRO (don't know about the standard PS4, it seems it will be too weak by that time). Anyway, exciting stuff as PS5 sounds great from what we're hearing.
Day one if the price is $500 or less
November 2020 seems sooo... far away now. No doubt I will preorder day one.
I know what Iβm buying myself for Christmas next year!
Probably 2023, after the bugs of release day are worked out, and a slim version with increased storage is available.
Oh, and my console backlog has to reach at least 50 games before I'm allowed to buy a successor console.
Awesome. But they are not clarifying which holiday. Easter holidays?
@Ichiyama Same here sadly haha . I usually wait at least 3-4 years before I buy a new console.
Both so all of the bugs can be crushed and newer model released, but also for the price to drop and to have alot of cheap (BUT GOOD) games to choose from!
Assuming that its towards Christmas '20, then i envisage a very late 45th birthday present to myself... especially as the missus is already trying to commandeer the PS4 in advance...
Nothing more satisfying that that new console smell...
Please clarify. I've just read the original article on Wired and nowhere does Sony's Jim Ryan say Holiday or 2020 in the same sentence. In fact, he never mentions those words at all.
Yep, already asked my family for nothing but money towards a PS5 for Christmas and my birthday in February...so no presents for a year but it will be worth it in the end...
