Sony has filed a patent for a curious new cartridge in Brazil, raising speculation about the nature of the product it’s designed for. The last cartridge-based console that the company released was the ill-fated PS Vita, and with the PlayStation 5 already confirmed to include a 4K Blu-ray drive, it’s unlikely to be related to that. Could this be a new handheld?
The answer is almost certainly no, because we’ve been here before, haven’t we? Around this time last year, the platform holder patented a strangely shaped cartridge, prompting all sorts of speculation. Those rumours were quickly quelled, however, when it emerged that the device was actually for the Sony Toio, a toy only available in Japan.
This new cartridge patent has been submitted by Yujin Morisawa, the same man behind the aforementioned toy. Nothing to see here, then? There’ll need to be a lot more smoke added to the fire before we believe this anything other than Sony R&D messing around. We’d recommend you don’t get your hopes up either.

PS5 will be Vita backwards compatible. You heard it here first.
@WCB that’s definitely a feature we don’t need.
@AhmadSumadi i would love to be able to play my digital vita purchases on ps5
Sony toio or playstation vita 2? I'm going with playstation portable 2 😃
@ellsworth004 I think it will be a megaton if sony announces ps5 will be BC digitally with all the playstation system including the portables (and physically with ps4).
Wow PS5 really is shaping up to be amazing, especially now it’s N64 backward compatible!
Could this be to upgrade the PS5 I wonder, like the N64 red cartridge, I have just got up so could be rubbish
dude SSD cartridges are going to be great performance wise but it's going to be expensive as hell!!
Ps1 memory card to play ps1 discs. Yes I can dream that it will play all previous consoles. But I second notion that @WCB says it will play vita games on big screen.
I bet Sony is working on the SNES: Sony New Entertainment System
Definitely looks like a wireless memory card holder 🤔
Wired they already exist, not sure if wireless ones do too?
Statements of PS5 being BC (for sure with PS4) it wouldn't be that farfetched if this would be a wireless MC holder addition for PS5's BC with PS1 &2.
And the guy who filed for the patent could easily be a minor smokescreen.
Of course, speculations and assumptions...
I'd defo go crazy if this end up being true.
Edit: Just searched a bit and couldn't find a wireless MC adaptor. And I mean, look at this....
This isn't wireless, looks like one but has a usb-slot on the back
@Aexurion well if the rumours are true and the PS5 is backwards compatible with all PS home systems perhaps that's what it's for, so we can transfer data from out PS1 and PS2 memory cards to the PS5 so we can keep our save data
this is how you upgrade the ssd on the ps5. that is what i think it will be.
New PlayStation handheld incoming.word up son
Sony is creating a cart Zip drive for external storage for save files.
At a whopping 100MB it will store 1 save file per cart.
I guess people don't realize how many patents a company files a year. Alot of the stuff that companies file patents for never see the light of day. Remember the Will vital sensor thing?
I really don't think the Vita deserves the slander it gets. Yes, it was a sales failure but that's not the fault of the system I believe. The fault lies with Sony. I feel that if they supported it properly with first party content rather than relying on third parties and independent developers to carry it, it could have been a bigger success.
That and just use MicroSD, like everybody else. Nintendo have proven that dedicated handhelds still have a place, the Switch and Switch Lite have been insanely successful, the secret is games.
I still play my Vita, just for Persona 4 and MGS Collection mainly. Oh and some remote play when the controls are right anyway. Some games have very weird mapping for remote play making it a joke to, well, play.
@AhmadSumadi speak for yourself
If they threw their hands back in and said "we see you nintendo". Ours switches too. And cost the same. And plays ps5 games😳. Guy can dream
@FullbringIchigo
Exactly! I wouldn't be surprised if these rumors end up being valid. Let's be honest, it's about time Sony steps up and get this over with.
@Genrou
People do realise! And it definitely may be it won't be used but as mentioned earlier it isn't a farfetched idea. Some people aren't into older games and want new games with fresh designed environments like Cyberpunk & Death Stranding but a good amount of gamers have grown a bit older and still enjoy to relive their memories of older games. For instance, I had a real blast replaying Bully & GTA: San Andreas. And FF8 is awesome as well. There are loads of good PS2 titles that deserve a proper remake because I believe we were spoiled with a great variety of titles back in the day. Also, with the amount of profit Sony is making I strongly feel no studios should have to decide between a remake or a new game. The gaming business is booming with profits and both remakes and new games should be worked on alongside one another.
Could it be a new handheld
Honestly surprised this wasn't just a Memory card for like, high volume expandable memory.
I'm excited, kinda... but I really hope it's not just another proprietary format like Memory Stick Duo or something.
They really haven't gotten over the whole Betamax thing...
The Game Genie is back, boys! 😎
@TheBuzz That is one possibility I was thinking. Maybe its meant to be high bandwidth external storage.
It will be a user-fillable-cartridge. Once everything has moved to digital, players will be able to download their favorite games from the PS store and then write them onto a cartridge and print a sticker for it, for safekeeping in the physical world. It will use a certain mediaformat inside the cartridge that will only allow to be written ONCE. Of course it will be hacked even before it comes up.
Obviously this is all made up.
@GADG3Tx87 Well, people claim Vita was a sales failure, but it sold more, quicker, than PSVR... and they're still flogging that horse.
Well, yeah. It's just what I've heard many folk say, don't know the actual numbers myself.
I have a Vita and I love it. I don't ever want to lose Persona4 or its rythym spin-offs, they're too special.
Although my slim has recently gotten an annoying bubble under the bottom left of the screen that is driving me crazy, it's ever since the update to 3.73 weirdly enough. I'll have to buy a screen and digitiser to replace it with.
Cartridges are cool and I prefer them over discs. Would be cool to see them return on the PlayStation brand in some form.
