Ghost of Tsushima is on the horizon, and we're all pretty excited here at Push Square Towers. This upcoming game from inFAMOUS and Sly Cooper devs Sucker Punch Productions is looking incredibly promising. We haven't seen much of the game in action, but we can glean a fair few details from what's been released so far. Below, we'll be going through some common questions about Ghost of Tsushima so you're prepared for this samurai showdown.
We will be keeping this FAQ up to date as new information becomes available.
What is the release date for Ghost of Tsushima on PS4?
Ghost of Tsushima is scheduled to release exclusively on PS4 worldwide on 17th July 2020.
What does the Ghost of Tsushima box art look like?
It looks like this, and it is very nice:
When will pre-load be available for Ghost of Tsushima on PS4?
If you pre-order Ghost of Tsushima digitally, you'll be able to download the game ahead of time to ensure you can start playing as soon as it unlocks on launch day. Usually, pre-loads become available a couple of days prior to release, so expect to be able to download Ghost of Tsushima around 15th July 2020.
Are there any pre-order bonuses or special editions of Ghost of Tsushima?
Of course! Pre-ordering any edition of Ghost of Tsushima will get you a Jin avatar, a digital mini soundtrack, and a Jin PS4 dynamic theme.
Here's a breakdown of each edition of the game you can pre-order.
Standard Physical/Digital Editions
There will of course be the regular version of Ghost of Tsushima, which simply provides you with the game itself. You can pre-order it on PlayStation Store right now.
Digital Deluxe Edition
The Digital Deluxe Edition comes with a few bonuses alongside the game. This version of GoT comes with the Hero of Tsushima set, which gives you "an additional in-game horse, saddle, mask, sword, and armor set for Jin". It will also reward you with a digital art book, director's commentary, another dynamic theme, and some in-game items.
Standard Plus Edition
This retail-exclusive version of the game is like the standard edition, only you'll also get "artwork featuring a custom print finish".
Special Edition
This is a physical equivalent of the Digital Deluxe Edition. You'll get the same Hero of Tsushima set, art book, director's commentary, dynamic theme, and in-game bonuses. On top of all that, you'll get a nifty steelbook case.
Collector's Edition
Ghost of Tsushima's Collector's Edition is pretty beefy. It comes packed with all the previous bonuses, plus a cloth map of the island, a war banner bearing the game's emblem, a furoshiki wrapping cloth, and a replica of Jin's mask.
Is there a Ghost of Tsushima special edition PS4 Pro console?
Sony has yet to confirm whether there will be any special PS4 hardware with custom Ghost of Tsushima styling. Given the company has done this for a number of its other games, we wouldn't be surprised if Sony had planned something similar for Ghost of Tsushima. However, given the state of things in 2020, this is looking relatively unlikely.
What is Ghost of Tsushima about?
Ghost of Tsushima is an open world action adventure set during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island. Taking place in 1274, the game tells the tale of Jin, a samurai who barely survives a battle with the Mongol army. In order to fight back, Jin adopts new strategies and develops new techniques to catch his enemies off-guard. He becomes known as the titular Ghost of Tsushima, striking fear into his foes from the shadows.
Is Ghost of Tsushima an open world game?
Yes. Ghost of Tsushima is an open world action game, and looks to play similarly to the likes of Assassin's Creed. We imagine you will be able to explore Tsushima Island freely, taking on missions, side quests, and more.
Will there be crafting in Ghost of Tsushima?
We've yet to see gameplay of this feature, but it's very likely that Ghost of Tsushima will have some sort of crafting system. We can easily imagine having to craft smoke bombs, arrows, and more during the adventure.
Will Ghost of Tsushima have multiplayer?
It is very safe to assume Ghost of Tsushima will be a purely single player experience. Sony hasn't ever mentioned multiplayer in relation to this game, and most of its PlayStation exclusives are strictly single player, story driven titles. Ghost of Tsushima is highly unlikely to include any multiplayer.
Can you play Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese?
Yes. Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima will have a Japanese audio track for a more authentic experience. You'll be able to play with English voice acting, or Japanese voice acting with English subtitles.
Is Ghost of Tsushima coming to PS5?
At this point, it's unclear. A PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima seems likely considering the game is launching so closely to the next-gen console. However, we know that it will be possible to play the PS4 version on PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility. Our best guess is an enhanced PS5 release of Ghost of Tsushima will turn up later on. We will update this guide if and when we learn more.
Which developer is making Ghost of Tsushima?
Ghost of Tsushima is being made by Sucker Punch Productions. This is the team previously known for Sly Cooper and inFAMOUS.

In other words, not much 😉
Well. I want to know if it got new game plus and level element. And how is the progress! How do the ability work and how you unlock them.. And multiple ending will be awesome! Hope its kind brutal and not easy..
My most anticipated games of 2020.is the 👻 ghost Baby.word up son
I have pretty much no hype for this game and I'm not sure why? I love Sucker Punch and open world games but nothing I have seen has clicked with me yet.
It’s summer 2020 now! So the Southern Hemisphere can expect this game to drop any day now...
@Bondi_Surfer Unfortunately there is another chunk of summer 2020 due to start in about 11 months time I think they might mean that one.
@Splat Yeah same here. I love samurai movies, and Japanese settings in general, yet this game isn't clicking with me. Same with TLoU2. They're both shaping up to be "eh... I guess I'll get them when they're cheap" sort of games, which is really weird for two tentpole exclusives. It's not that they look bad at all. I don't get it.
I'm another who isn't too excited about this game. It looks pretty good in the vids I've seen but then I always forget about it when thinking of unreleased games.
Definitely looking forward to this game as love me some Samurai action & history - just hope it lives up to my lofty expectations 😎
Goty 2020 nominee's.word up son
Love the box art, I'm really looking forward to Ghost of Tsushima, I think this may be my most anticipated of 2020 outside the next gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
It will probably be like "Batman meets Assassin's Creed". I'd buy that...
My wife is pregnant. Little s*** is arriving just in time to mess up my hot date with this game 😅 man, I hope it releases in june
Updated
@BrettAwesome nobody to blame but yourself unless it was the milkman 😂
I wonder if you buy this for PS4 digitally will you get a PS5 upgrade? I have bought quite a few of my games digitally but his time around and I’m hoping they will all be able to be played on whatever Sony console they release going forward.
@Boucho11 Well PS4 games can be played on PS5 and will benefit from things like faster loading.
But if they make a specific PS5 version of the game, we don't know if you'll get a free upgrade. Microsoft are doing a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X version of Cyberpunk 2077 if you get the Xbox One version so it'd make sense for Sony to do the same thing with games released this year in order to avoid looking bad by comparison.
All i know is....LOOK AT THAT FOLIAGE!
Summer 2020 relates to the Northern Hemisphere LOL...
This is my most anticipated PS4 exclusive of the year (so far) and more so than the Last of Us part 2. We do have some idea of the story and game play - thanks to the setting and a few official video's but as a Single Player only game, its finding the balance between enough information and too much that spoils the experience.
As for PS5, until we know more about the Console, we don't yet know exactly what will happen. Of course Backwards Compatibility is an option but that still doesn't necessarily translate as having a PS5 like experience. If the PS5 works similarly to the Pro - in other words, changes its hardware configuration, then chances are it will still be a 'PS4' type experience. The Pro shuts off half of its GPU and reduces clock speeds (unless you have boost mode enabled which keeps the clock speeds) and if the PS5 does something similar, then the game will still run like it does on PS4 Pro. If its running like a PS4, then its effectively a PS4 - you are not getting the benefits of the extra horsepower.
To me a 'PS5' version would be a version that's using the full power of the PS5 to enhance the game experience beyond what is possible on the current hardware - much like a remastered version of Last of Us, Nathan Drake collection or those multi-generation releases we saw in the first couple of years. Whether or not games like GoT or LoU2 will be 'enhanced', patched etc to utilise the PS5 free of charge or Sony will release a separate PS5 version, we don't yet know.
@BAMozzy I'd expect things like higher res(supersampling or native 4K) and 60+fps for PS5 B/C at very least.
@BAMozzy One benefit will be running a silent console ; )
@DominatorV93 @Matroska MS are in a different position and appear to be going a different route to Sony. MS have other avenues to sell their games and don't need to rely purely on the console. The series X could be more a mix of an iterative upgrade and a new console - in other words offering enhancements on titles like a Pro but also could have its own software too like a next gen console. It could end up being more like the PC space so you get better quality visuals and performance on the better hardware and some games may say 'minimum hardware req: Series X (and/or Series S if/when that comes out).
Sony seem more traditional and rely on people buying their console to sell them games. Offering BC doesn't mean that they will 'enhance' PS4 games and that could cut out a chunk of revenue too - selling remasters - especially if the games are enhanced.
If the game is capped to 30fps, as this game is, it would take a developer to patch in a raised frame rate cap and any changes to resolution (unless its Dynamic with a 4k cap) inc Native vs CB rendering, Visual quality settings etc. If the leaks are true, when a PS4 or PS4 Pro enhanced game is played on a PS5, the PS5 drops clock speeds and will even shut off half its GPU to match the specs of a PS4 or Pro. If it does that with a PS4 version of GoT, then you will not get any enhancements because the console is running at basically the same spec as a PS4 Pro. There could be a 'small' improvement if the game drops frames or uses dynamic resolution scaling but it can't suddenly run at Native 4k 60fps with ray tracing and higher quality visual settings because the PS5 is running as a PS4 Pro, the game settings will be locked in to PS4/Pro capabilities etc.
Unless Devs patch (or built) in PS5 settings that are unlocked on a PS5 and tells the PS5 that this is a PS5 game so don't change the hardware settings, if the leaks are correct, then PS5 will offer little benefits over the PS4 Pro. As @MattSilverado alluded to, you could have a quieter console and potential faster loading times. I think Sony would need something like MS's Smart Delivery too to offer higher quality assets if you play on the PS5.
I am NOT saying Sony WON'T offer any B/C enhanced titles or Devs can't patch in some way to enhance games - make the console think its running a PS5 game so doesn't change the hardware settings. The leak could be wrong or outdated (meaning Sony were going to do that but now changed their mind), but until we know more, its not safe to assume that B/C on PS5 will offer anything more than PS4/Pro like performance and visual quality.
What MS does is different and they have a dedicated team working on B/C which is why so many old games are not playable on XB1 and why the X offered some advantages baked in (better loading times, better frame rates, better Anisotropic filtering) and others were X enhanced - 4k - without developer input.
If MS are building their console more like an iterative upgrade with the option to have its own software down the line - similar to the PC space where you see minimum Hardware required.... - Games could release that play on any Xbox (XB1 onwards) - much like owning a GTX 960 PC and then upgrading to a GTX 2080. On the GTX 2080 - you get the ability to run at 4k with ray tracing and higher visual settings over a GTX 960 and eventually, the minimum PC requirements for games will be say GTX 1080 or better. Require more VRAM and MT CPU's - which is where a Series S (Rumoured project Lockhart) could be the minimum spec for those Xbox games.
As I said, its still too early to know for definite and this is based on rumours/speculations but if the leaks are true, then B/C may not offer much more than the ability to play your games and Sony may well sell you a 'remastered' PS5 version to get the PS5 quality experience - they could also patch in for free but we won't know until we have much more info...
@BAMozzy Expectations do need to be set.
I expect Sony's approach to backwards compatibility to fall more in line with how the PS3 handled it - options for texture smoothing (or a forced 16x AF like Xbox One X) and resolution up-scaling (up to 4K) for legacy titles. I expect target framerates for legacy titles to either lock or hit their target more often. I expect dynamic resolution games to lock or hit their target resolution more often. I expect unlocked framerate games to run higher fps. Nothing more.
Regarding a Smart Delivery-like approach to cross-generational titles is definitely something I hope Sony does as well. I feel like Microsoft really threw down the gauntlet on that one.
I know it makes more money to do remasters - heck even Smart Delivery isn't forced on third-party developers/publishers - but I like Microsoft's thinking with it. CD Projekt RED seems to think it's a great idea, too - and that is a big win given the hype surrounding Cyberpunk 2077!
@BAMozzy Bit surprised by some statements, considering SONY has been quite open in some regards of the B/C.
''MS are in a different position and appear to be going a different route to Sony.''
We currently have no info on the course the SONY is taking for Playstation 5 generation. So we can't rightly say one is doing something different from the other, especially when one party is silent.
''Sony seem more traditional and rely on people buying their console to sell them games. Offering BC doesn't mean that they will 'enhance' PS4 games and that could cut out a chunk of revenue too - selling remasters - especially if the games are enhanced.''
Playstation Now is certainly not traditional (tho i detest that sort of thing, including that GamePass). And we already have indications of what we could expect from B/C with the released patent by Sony ''Remastering by Emulation''. Which description mentions things like; adding 4K, HDR, better textures {LOD}, bigger draw distance/NPC count, higher FPS and more on an emulator level without touching the actual game code.
Sounds familiar doesn't it?
Hell it was even mentioned numerous times about closed door event in early 2019, Las Vegas held by SONY, that showcased games like RDR2, Spiderman (which we already saw footage of showcasing Raytracing and faster loading times), and one unknown game. All games showcased 60FPS unlocked, Native 4K along other things like overall higher graphical fidelity.All of that was a showcase of a WIP(at the time) project/patent that will be implemented in form of Playstation 5.
And that will undoubtedly be used to counter the ''smart delivery'' of Microsoft side of things.
The rest of the statements you made pretty much is answered by the above.
@Ridwaano I'm lost as to why some games are lacking a new game plus at times. It makes no sense not to include it.
@MightyDemon82
Why is that?
@BrettAwesome It was a Joke!
@MightyDemon82
Sure 🙂 I'm not upset or anything. I just didn't get it.
Oooooohhh.... damn I'm slow 😂😂😂
@BrettAwesome I only realised you posted that initial comment in January, so at least you'll get to play it before the baby comes, is this your first? My wife and I decided that we didn't want kids but between us we have 7 nieces and nephews which is an expense in itself and I never get on my PS4 when they stay over hogging it!
@MightyDemon82
Uhm...the fetus had perished around week 10 😑 so now I even get to play some PS5 before a baby arrives
@BrettAwesome my condolences
@MightyDemon82
No worries. It happened so early on that we weren't really fully invested yet emotionally. I can't imagine how it must be if something like that happens at a later stage, but this we could deal with 🙂 thanks for your concern though!
@BrettAwesome I've had friends go through it really heartbreaking, hope all goes well for the future!
@MightyDemon82
Absolutely horrible! 😪 And thanks 🙂
