What are the best horror games on PS4? The good news (or the terrifying news for the scaredy-cats among you) is that the PlayStation 4 is home to a wealth of creepy releases. Horror is a theme that's really bounced back in a major way the last 10 years or so, and there's evidence everywhere — including a wide range of eerie experiences of all shapes and sizes.
The genre's big ticket franchises like The Last of Us and Resident Evil are thriving on PS4. While big budget horror games like Capcom's popular series are doing great, there's so much fantastic stuff to find elsewhere. The indie scene is rife with terrifying, atmospheric horror games; Inside springs to mind, but there's also Outlast, Little Nightmares, and Layers of Fear. Whether you enjoy narrative adventures like Until Dawn, something more action-packed like Days Gone, or intense, jump scare-filled nightmares like MADiSON, there's no shortage of horror on PS4.
One thing we do just want to note: if you can get your hands on a PS4 that still has the infamous PT installed on it, then it’s worth playing through. Konami released this demo for free a few years back in order to announce Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills, but it was erased from the PlayStation Store after a very public fallout between the publisher and its legendary developer. Nevertheless, PT is without a doubt the scariest game on PS4, and it’s a shame we’ll never get to see what Kojima Productions had planned for the full game.
While PT is sadly off the table, there are still lots of great options for horror fans. In fact, we could use your help in finding the best horror games on PS4. This list relies entirely upon your input; the games that appear and in which order are dictated by your user ratings for each title. Using the search bar below, you can find some PS4 horror games and leave your ratings — doing so will impact the list directly.
Note: a game will need at least 30 ratings to appear on this page at all. Without further ado, here's our list of the best horror games on PS4 — chosen by you lot.
20. Outlast (PS4)
One of the very first horror games to release on PS4 is still considered one of the console's best. Equipped with a camcorder, you'll need to sneak around a psychiatric hospital and find out what on earth's going on inside. Naturally, you'll encounter some very creepy scenes, monsters, and set pieces. Oh, and a penis.
19. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (PS4)
Originally released episodically as a direct sequel to Nintendo 3DS game Resident Evil: Revelations, it’s probably fair to say that Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has largely been forgotten. But the game, starring Claire Redfield and Barry Burton’s daughter Moira has some high-points, including full co-op support. When playing solo, you’ll need to toggle between different characters to solve puzzles. There’s also a Raid Mode which features a bunch of combat gauntlets, all of which can be enjoyed with a friend locally and online.
18. Alan Wake Remastered (PS4)
11 years after the Xbox 360 original, PlayStation players finally get to experience what Alan Wake is all about. With better visuals and frame rates, the story of Alan Wake has a light shone on it once more. Its gameplay is probably going to feel a little dated at this point, but it's a compelling experience that'll set you up nicely for its PS5 sequel.
17. Little Nightmares (PS4)
Tarsier Studios, using its experience making LittleBigPlanet Vita, returns with something much more sinister. Little Nightmares might share some of that physics-driven platforming DNA with Sackboy, but tonally it's the other side of the spectrum. This is a creepy, atmospheric, horror-tinged puzzle platformer about a child trapped in a strange facility. Escaping will mean solving some intense puzzles and outrunning some horrible nasties.
15. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood (PS4)
This PSVR rail shooter really will get your blood pumping. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood takes you on a horrifying rollercoaster ride as you shoot targets and deal with all manner of jump scares and other terrors. Multiple routes through the stages are there to discover, and online leaderboards will keep you coming back to chase up those high scores.
14. Metro Redux (PS4)
Metro Redux may effectively be a compilation, but it includes two killer games from the PS3 era – one of which was exclusive to the Xbox 360 at the time. Both bundled games have thick, oppressive atmospheres, and are significantly upgraded in this package.
13. The Evil Within 2 (PS4)
Bigger and better than its predecessor, The Evil Within 2 opts for more open environments to set its horror scares in as opposed to the dark, tight corridors of the original. This results in a much better experience with more player freedom, questions, and options — it's sort of a hidden gem at this point. Horror aficionados owe it to themselves to check out The Evil Within 2.
12. Alien: Isolation (PS4)
Alien: Isolation may have somewhat overstayed its welcome, but its nail-biting survival gameplay perfectly captures the claustrophobic tone of Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 sci-fi movie. Assuming the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of series protagonist Ellen Ripley, you’re stalked from start-to-finish by the series’ deadly Xenomorph. Up against impossible odds, the game constantly keeps you on your toes, as you’re forced to slip past the enormous extraterrestrial unnoticed. It’s a completely unique experience that hasn’t really been replicated since.
11. Days Gone (PS4)
After several years working on handhelds like PS Vita and PSP, Bend Studio marked its return to home consoles with its ambitious open world adventure Days Gone. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the game’s biker motif made it stand out from the crowd, as your two-wheels became your sanctuary in an extremely hostile setting. A huge focus on story and some genuinely impressive tech allowed the developer to flex its muscle, and the release would go on to become a cult favourite among PS4 fans.

Agree lots of good games here but Evil Within 2 should be on the list. I don't think you played it Sammy? I'd rate it over Resi 4 these days.
And I wouldn't have TLOU at number 1 myself. My top 3 would be..
3. Alien Isolation
2. Evil Within 2
1. Resi 7
Bwah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah!
Seriously?
I love you guys! I'm gonna tell my doctor I don't need sertraline anymore.
I haven't played a lot of the games here but I agree with @kyleforrester87,Evil Within 2 is by far my favourite horror game and I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned.Defiantly would of had that game or Resi 7 over The Last Of Us.
And Everybody's gone to the Rapture as a horror game? That game bored me to tears!
Until Dawn is great. Probably the best game I've picked up through PS+ on this generation.
Rapture is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Once you get past the ‘walking simulator’ feel it’s genuinly disturbing. Listening to an old telephone conversation of a woman taking to her husband and saying ‘oh darling, a load of jets have just flown over’ with those very same jets being the ones that are used to ‘quarantine’ the village gave me the same feeling as I got when I watched the film Threads. No jump scares, no monsters, no gore just disturbing phsycological horror at its finest!
i realy would not call TLOU a horror game.
a drama thriller for sure but not horror.
and no evil within 2?
@jdv95
I kinda agree with the last of us. I’m not a big horror fan and I put off getting the last of us on ps3 partly because it was sold as a survival horror. I picked it up on the PS4 and loved it definitely don’t think it’s a horror game in any shape or form
@gingerfrog @jdv95 yeah I can't really call TLOU a horror game either. Weird because in principal it contains all the elements but it never felt remotely scary. I guess the same could be said for certain sections of the recent Tomb Raider games.
I'm really sad when I press the PT icon on the library and it says it can't be downloaded! I do it every so often to regret the moment I deleted it after I was scared by that stupid lady in the corridor
It is obviously popular (getting a sequel) and won the top spot, but I have a hard time sticking with Last of Us. Sortof like Uncharted the story is supposed to be so gripping but the gameplay feels so shallow. Maybe I need to give it more time...
@kyleforrester87 I agree, Evil Within 2 was really good. With RE4, I had that game on pre order when it first released on the gamecube and even at the time I think it really loses direction towards the end, the shooting gets relentless and the horror drifts away.
I did buy it again on PS4, but Ive not been compelled to finish the game.
@AFCC would have been THE horror game of the decade if it was not canceled.
that fetus in the sink was realy a WTF moment.
i'm actually let down that kojima decided to leave PT as is,and started making death stranding. sure the silent hills IP still belongs to konami but maybe hideo could just make it a different IP.
I agree with the others I don't see TLOU as a horror game and the lack of Evil Within 2 it's a little disappointing
Hmm....
The Last Of Us is not horror in my book (it's also really overrated in general). I'd add The Evil Within 2, like many others, and also Resident Evil: Revelations 2; that game doesn't get enough love.
@jdv95 I have a feeling that it would be the best horror game PERIOD
Guys sorry to bother, can anyone inform me if there is a way to revert the site back to mobile mode?? I used desktop mode just for E3 so I could use the livestreams properly...but now it's so annoying having to zoom in to read x)
Any way to have mobile mode again?
I'm not normally that keen on horror, but I did love Until Dawn.
@AFCC clear your cache
@kyleforrester87 didn't work
@AFCC smash your phone into a thousand pieces and inject it into your eye
A lot of these aren't even horror games, just vaguely dark in terms of subject matter.
Anyway, the correct top three is:
1) Resident Evil remake
2) P.T. (which is, interestingly, kind of a super-rare game now; I'm never upgrading my PS4 and losing this)
3) Resident Evil VII
Although I could see that stellar looking remake of Resi 2 making the list, if it turns out as good as I hope it does.
@AFCC I did just try it on my iPhone and it worked, I don't see why it wouldn't to be honest - does it ask you to log back in again after clearing?
A bit annoying there isn't a button on the homepage to click!
@Ralizah Resi 2 will be straight to number 1!
Agree with most of the listings, but my own list would include:
Evil Within 1 & 2, Yomawai, Detention, Observer, Dear Esther,
Prey, and Resident Evil Revelation 2.
@Bonbonetti Detention is a surprisingly great adventure game. Although some of the horror elements felt a bit forced. In terms of the symbolism, narrative, etc. though? Utterly compelling.
@kyleforrester87 The first REmake was a masterpiece, and is still one of the scariest classic Japanese survival horror experiences to this day. I've played my Gamecube copy countless times over the years.
Funny, considering I've never been a huge fan of the original PS1 version. They're like completely different games in terms of atmosphere.
As others have mentioned, definitely needs The Evil Within 2 on this list. And how about Lone Survivor: Director’s Cut? That’s one creepy game. Horror games? Luvs em!
Slender?
@stupidget Great shout on Threads. The fact it’s structured somewhat like a documentary, doesn’t have any Hollywood glamour, and is based on a scenario that could very easily happen (even more so at the time it was made), makes it probably the most disturbing and scariest film I’ve ever seen. I loved Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture too.
Interesting list. I wouldn't really class TLOU or Inside as "horror" either but they do both have their moments.
Anyone remember the game: Amy?
Soma "this unsettling underwater adventure is all about human consciousness and the attributes that determine life. It’s a topic that’s been done to death, admittedly "
Done to death?! Can you name some ps games because i cant think of any off the top of my head.
no evil within 2? even evil within 1 is a ps4 game, choose both game over re4 which is more like an action game. until dawn and re7 are my fave horror game, tlou being my most favorite game of all time. btw remothered is coming to ps4 right?
No Evil Within 1 or 2 ? No Outlast 1 ? No AMNESIA ???? Rapture, Inside and TLOU are not even horror games. Can't say I agree with this list at all...
The last of us may pass as a horror game but it's not great at that or a good game in general if you ask me. Otherwise a great list. Alien Isolation, RE7, Layers of fear and SOMA (more creepy sci-fi than horror) being my favorites. Yeah, and The Evil Within 2 should be included. Maybe even in top 10.
VR Is great for horror games adds another level to the scares. Would add Dont Knock Twice and Rush of Blood to the list.
10. Inside
9. Outlast
8. The Evil Within
7. Until Dawn
6. Dying Light
5. Outlast 2
4. The Evil Within 2
3. Bloodborne
2. Resident Evil 7
1. Alien: Isolation
Has Pushsquare got shares in Everybodys Gone to the Rapture? It crops up in all their lists but it's so boring isn't it?
Evil within 1 and 2 are awesome.little nightmares is more horror then everybody gone to the rapture imo.
@kyleforrester87 actually no! I clean the cache and then reload the site and it stays the same, logged in and all! I have a samsung don't know if that's a problem lol
@AFCC clearing the cache will delete all your saved user names and passwords so you have to log back in to all your websites and accept their disclaimers regarding cookies etc, you must not be doing it right unfortunately? Perhaps there is a sub-setting you can change which chooses what information is deleted when you clear your internet settings.
I usually cannot stand horror games as I get scared too easily, and I had no trouble playing TLOU... so for me it's not a horror game. Anyway, I'm happy to put it on top of any genre's list ; )
Keep waiting for alien isolation to be a ps plus title but it never is!! Love the first two alien movies and heard the style is very similar to the first movie
@kyleforrester87 i click the 'History' setting then I click 'Clear cache' I pick pushsquare's cache...it waits a little to delete, then everything is the same! Maybe I'm dumb dunno lol
@kyleforrester87 I smashed my phone and now it works
But seriously I got it to work! I was just being dumb! Thanks for the help!!
@AFCC No problem, i heard someone else on here before have the same problem clearing the cache on a Samsung, not sure why it's so difficult!
The Evil Within 2 is an amazing game, certainly more so than Soma which I was very disappointed by.
@kyleforrester87 nah like I said I was dumb and only cleaning cache from 1 hour prior lol
Updated!
I need the Evil Within 2. It could be a great Halloween game. Bloodborne early on caused me to be more scared of an enemy in a game than anything else I've ever played. I remember trying so hard to find a way around when there were two werewolves, which just seemed absolutely impossible to tackle. I actually accidentally skipped the first boss because of it.
SOMA is such an underrated game, never felt so isolated in a game before, great story and atmosphere. Alien Isolation, RE7 and ofcourse P.T. are really good in the horror department. Still mad about P.T. being cancelled...
Evil Within 2 a fantastic game that didn't get anywhere near the praise it deserved.
I'd have Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen on my list because there are some nasties on Bitterblack Isle and it's creepy as hell.
How about Prey? Until Dawn or Siren will be my Halloween jam
Almost there. Last year Bloodborne wasn't even on the list, but luckly someone let you notice that it was a weird thing.
The king of horror, btw, can be only one...
@beemo Looks like anything with a zombie-like creature in it can be considered an horror these days...
@MadAussieBloke What's wrong with Outlast 2? Surely is over the top most of the time (mission objective: survive your crucifixion!) but the atmosphere is still great, imo.
For me as horror games, I'd say that Alien Isolation and Resident Evil 7 would quite comfortably be the top 2 with
Until Dawn rounding out the top 3. No doubt TLOU is a great game but for the most part it didn't feel like it was trying to be a horror game
people saying the last of us is not horror must not know the definition of said word.
Where are Alien Isolation and Prey?
Prey, anyone?
evil within 2 is a masterpiece.and the best horror game.word up son
as others have said dont understand why last of us is number one as its not a true horror game and evil within in 2 and alien should be in the top 3.
Anyone got an opinion on Remothered: Tormented Fathers?
It came out a few months ago I think and went totally under my radar. Watched the trailer the other night and it looks pretty freaky!
I'm playing Until Dawn for Halloween only for its dated toxic masculinity
excellent list. Last of Us had some scary moments for me. i am gonna have to give Alien a shot. the scariest game i played was not even on PlayStation Alan Awake now that scared the poo put me
Guys need to chill with Bloodborne over Evil within 2
I’m really happy RE8 scored so highly! It really is a master peace in horror gaming! I also disagree with everyone saying TLOU is not a horror game! Have you seen those clickers?! Terrifying!
@biscuit_of_rage As per community rules
Do not use profanity; Use of unsavoury language including profanity and swearing is not acceptable, please remember that this website has users of all ages.
So let's watch the language ok
Thanks for understanding
Is boredom considered scary? otherwise half this list confuses me.
I'd also add RE Revelations 2 and Amnesia Collection! Also, do you guys remember Thief? While not exactly a horror game, it had some scary moments, overall a mediocre game but I had quite some fun with it.
@Tasuki sorry i got carried away. it wont happen again.
Good list overall, although I question the inclusion of The Last of Us and Inside. They both have disturbing moments, but both are more in the "psychological thriller/drama" camp than horror.
Also, assuming you are writing this list for someone who is looking for recommendations on horror games, I'm really confused why you included PT - a game you cannot download anymore. That entry is useless for someone who actually wants to, ya know, play a horror game.
Like I said, good list. I'd have thrown out those three and included Evil Within 2, Soma, The Amnesia Collection, and/or one of the lesser know Resident Evil games.
TLOU and Bloodborne gives chills because of its atmosphere...
But RE7...you can cr*p whenever you blink, it is too much for me! But oh, i should first finish the first one remastered i bought via PSN...
The scariest games on PlayStation 4, TLOU on No. 1 WTF? I agree that TLOU is one of the best games ever made but TLOU didn't even had one scary moment and this list is about which game is the most scariest right?
Lol a piece of overhyped trash like TLOU beating Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil VII is just laughable.
No Metro?
seriously?
This list just shows how much the horror genre is lacking in games for this generation. It needs more love from AAA developers
This list needs some serious re-adjustments
EGttR is a bizarre inclusion. And Push Square really needs to play Detention.
I really like TLOU but best horror game? Not even close, it's not even remotely scary which is probably it's only weakness. Resident Evil 2 is the best for me with VII close behind and Alien Isolation rounding out the top 3
@IBeAGamer Only you could call The Last of Us "Trash"
Bloodborne is horror game ? no way, it not scare me enough. it remind me of Dark Soul games that why it is similar in gameplay.
RE 2, imo, and it's not even close.
Agree with those that have already said it, i wouldnt call TLOU a horror game. Thriller/drama yes.
RE7, Alien Isolation, and RE2 would be my top 3. I couldn't even finish RE7 in VR, while Alien has the most tense momenta in gaming, and RE2 brings back the good old jump scares and gore.
@AdamNovice I've seen plenty of people online call it trash actually.
For atmosphere SOMA was superb... especially the deep sea open areas... the feeling of emptiness and sheer darkness did a great job...
@IBeAGamer Yes but there usually recaptured very quickly. There's a difference from a game been "trash" just because you don't like it.
@AdamNovice cool, the game is trash.
Any Brit using the word 'trash' deserves to be fired by cannon across the Atlantic.
If anyone wants to buy a PS4 pro with PT installed, let me know.
I think I’ll give PT another play through in the spirit of the season. That was one of the best stealth drops that I can recall in 40 years of gaming.
@jdv95 Its horror its devestating and confronting, gut-wrenching. Its just not really scary but for it was quite shocking the start. The clickers where quite nasty.
evil within 1 just see Laura then you will update the list definitely
@IBeAGamer Is see a lot of nonsense online.
@Playstation5 Its a horrorgame. 100%
Still TLOU at number 1? Whether you think its horror or not, it's just not even the best game on that list. It is a good game but it has been surpassed by the likes of Resident Evil 2 which should be top of that list
What's PT? Please tell...
@kyleforrester87 It is in the list
The Last of Us is my favourite game of all time, but for a horror experience, I'd say Alien Isolation is the best horror game on PS4.
Would love a Silent Hill 2 remaster, that's my favourite horror game across all platforms.
@tjames84 it is now!
@carlos82 agreed, TLOU is a fine game but the best horror game on PS4? Not for my money!
I was pleasantly surprised to see Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture on this list! It's some of the best cosmic horror you'll find outside of a Lovecraft story.
Sorry but inside isn’t better than isolation or EVW2
Don't agree with TLOU being on first place. Don't get me wrong i still have ptsd from my first basement run, but games like Bloodborne had those in abundance.
@beavis64 Resident Evil 2 is better than Bloodborne and The Last of Us for me. Being stalked by Mr X has been a highlight of this generation and I enjoyed it so much I got the Platinum. I like TLOU, I just don't like it as much as for Bloodborne I just couldn't get into it for whatever reason
The Last of Us 1 and 2 are up there with my favourite games of all time, and definitely have their horror moments, but if I was choosing out-and-out horror games for a horror fan the winners would be Resi 7, Resi 2, Bloodborne, Until Dawn and PT.
Still have PT installed after all these years. I remember my best friend and I stayed up until like 2 a.m. to try and beat it. Got the s*** scared out of us the first time we died. I just realized I was in college when that released so it must have been 2015 or early 2016.
Never managed to play PT would love to give it a go. I'm going to get back into little nightmares for Halloween I think.
Mind you im totally ignorant as ive hardly played any bloodborne but i dont get how people consider it a horror game.
It just seems like an action game with some horror aesthetics. Like calling devil may cry a horror game because theres monsters in it.
I mean no offense lol. Can someone explain it to me please? Ill probably still disagree but.. Still lol.
Already have Resident Evil and Doom to play through but will get Alien Isolation if it's still on sale. Was hoping it might be the other October ps plus game but it was NFS for some rubbish reason.
1) Alien isolation and no competition that game is so tense i must have spent 30 hours in lockers because i was too scared to move
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope Gave me a few scares. The List is very solid!
Alien Isolation has no competition in my opinion. Playing at night with headphones in a dark room is the scariest video game experience available. When I had to finally make meaningful progress, I played during the day (although this was still terrifying). Creative Assembly made one of the games of the generation and a massive crowd pleaser for Alien Saga fans. On a stranger note - regarding heart rate for example, Warzone always elicits a similar physical reaction to that of some horror titles!
That's a lot of resident evil. And very surprising to see days gone in there.
Iove horror games. I reckon one of the best ones on PS4 is Layers of fear. The scariest game I've ever played though was on psvr - paranormal activity. Both those would have made my list.
No visage either...I've just started it. The chapter I played was abit too much trial and error with chase scenes but loads of people rave about it. I'll give it a a fair chance.
Is Everybody's Gone to the Rapture a horror? Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favourite games of all time, and probably one of the best examples of science fiction across any medium in the last decade, but "horror" is... playing fast and loose there.
I agree with evil within 2 at no 9
Last of us 2 top? Come on. It is a lot of things but its not scary. Well not that scary. 1 was much scarier. There's just not enough infected in the sequel.
Dying Light should be here! Absolute gem of a game.
I can get behind TLoU as a horror game but only on Grounded mode.
@Gmork___ it’s been done to death in horror literature and film.
@Slippship because it's been updated since I'd wager.
Nothing is more scarier this year than My Friend Peppa Pig.
@Starkei Dying Light 2 should be here “too” if you’ll pardon the pun ..
You left off VISAGE! That game, although executed poorly at times, is perhaps in the top 5 for me. It’s held back to some strange gameplay design choices… but it consistently is creepy and once things “click” it takes off a bit more.
Also, I absolutely LOVE Soma…
@SystemAddict I hope it will be. Looking awesome!
