Update: This is an interesting story, so we followed up with developer Iris to try to understand what it's doing here. Will Low-Fi support the existing PlayStation VR headset? Is it aware of super-secret Sony plans for a new virtual reality device? Will the game come to the PlayStation 4?
Here's what a spokesperson told us: "I can't really comment other than saying, yes we will be on PS5, and no we don't intend to release on PS4."
So, the game is a VR release launching on PS5 but not PS4. We first assumed it'll use Sony's existing headset on the PS5, but the title's Kickstarter page references "next-gen PSVR", so make of that what you will.
Update: Sony’s already confirmed that PlayStation VR will work with the PlayStation 5, but we’d expected backwards compatibility with PlayStation 4 titles only. However, if Low-Fi is anything to go by, there’s a chance we may yet get next-gen titles that are playable with the Japanese giant’s current-gen headset – unless developer IRIS knows something we don’t.
The latest trailer for the studio’s cyberpunk release claims that it’s in development for PS5, and there’s no mention of the PS4 at all. We’ll attempt to contact the studio in order to find out more, but this does appear to be the first virtual reality title confirmed for PS5, which is wild. Hopefully the company can clarify exactly how this is going to work.
Thanks to SilenceCZ for sending this in.

As a PSVR owner and future PS5 owner, this is great to see. I expected next gen to be saved for PSVR2 besides backwards compatibility for the current VR games. Hope to see more of this.
The game's kickstarter page did states that the game is targeting "next gen PSVR headset" and from what I've seen of it I very much doubt it could really work with the current PSVR.
Anyone who thought that vr support wouldn’t continue into next gen were delusional lol. Expect much more to come.
So, it will be VR games for PS5 but with PSVR1? Odd.
They need to buff the controls, something with finger sensors, that's the future of VR.
PS5 should be able to run a port of HL Alyx, but it need something like the Index controllers
It only says PlayStation 5?
This is FANTASTIC news.
@AdamNovice
PSVR headset is capable of much more. PS4 (Pro too) itself holds it back.
Yep, looking forward to PS5 powering PSVR. The little step in power from PS4 to Pro was noticeable. So hopefully the PS5 will give the visuals a huge bump in performance.
@SoulChimera I think this is what people seem to be missing. The rendering quality of PSVR1 was limited by the Ps4's power. With the PS4 they'll be able to use antialising and supersampling etc. Very exciting. PS5 will extend the life of PSVR for a few more years yet, and I wouldn't expect a PSVR2 until at least late 2022
@mrellis1181 Good point, I didn't look at it like that actually. What I say will hold PSVR back more thought is the Move controllers cos Sony really need to be bringing new 3D controllers going into next gen.
Exciting!
Slightly off-topic, but I was wondering whether part of the reason for the combination of a USB C and micro USB on the front of the PS5 could be to support the current PSVR.
USB C can carry an HDMI feed AFAIK, so could we see an adaptor that plugs into the PS5's front ports and then straight into the PSVR headset cable (without needing the breakout box)?
Another WOW.
I really hope ALYX and Lone Echo 1 and 2 make it to PS5. VR needs to unify and bring the best experiences everywhere possible Next Gen.
@mrellis1181 Exactly. Upgrading my card made my PCVR experience so much better. Just moving up the quality and stable frame rates in the games I already had and using the same headset.
Reminds me of Omega from ME2. And now I really want a VR Mass Effect.
@AdamNovice
That is psvr biggest issue.
But judging how sony has massively slowed down psmove production, we can expect a new model in the very near future.
@NotSmartEnough
And you re saying you re not smart enough.
😉😉
@Chryssy75
Few years back I was predicting that the PS4 Pro would support 4k Blu-ray and not need the PSVR breakout box, so I could have gone with AlmostAlwaysWrong instead! We'll see how it pans out. Cheers.
I see PSVR 2 to be a mid gen or later release focusing first on backwards compatibility with the existing headset. I would love for PSVR to not need an external box on PS5.
This is great news I'm really happy to see Sony continue with the VR support, I love my VR. Astrobot, Moss and Blood and Truth were stand outs but I also really enjoyed Ace Combat looking around from the cockpit in flight it is just the stuff of dreams. Hopefully Gran Turismo 7 will have a bit more support for VR too.
As others have said the next gen iteration needs to be wireless or at the very least improve on the move controllers.
i just want a new headset that is not tethered to wires and the breaker box, and the wands need improving too, this title may be held back by those limitations.
hmm, interesting, individual finger movements, something the ps move is not capable of.....
now i'm interested and excited, i hope we get more news about the ps5 release!
I guess we didn't see any pics of the back of the PS5 yet, but I hope that it has the connectors to plug the headset direct to the console. I have the original model that doesn't even pass HDR through, so that would be really annoying. As I understand it, one of the main functions of the processor box is to generate the 3D audio, and that functionality is confirmed part of the PS5, so maybe they won't need it.
Good to hear that VR support is confirmed though.
Thanks for doing some research for the update.
I've been harping on "does this game need to be on PS5 and not PS4 or are they just needlessly taking it off PS4?" but w/ PSVR I'm willing to make an exception, shows they are continuing PSVR support which is nice. And yeah, PSVR screen resolution is the resolution, but more enemies, more effects, better, lighting, maybe smoother motion, I can see the PS5s power being put to good use even in the old headset. Count me in.
And yes, new controllers. I have 2 Move since when they released for Heroes on the Move but they have always been limited in usefulness.
Wait wait.
'Next Gen PSVR' could mean 2 things:
PSVR on PS5 only
Or
PSVR2 (and also on PS5 only)
?
I think we can all agree PSVR v1. 1 was only the beginning. Really looking forward to PSVR 2 wireless and sharp visuals. The jump from mobile phones 3.0 to now is staggering. Or from full HD to 4K (Hdr). If another pandemic appears in future it'd be awesome to meet mates in the virtual world... Seeing the whole avatar and full sized worlds.
I think people are missing the real question here. Is that a flying DeLorean? Now I’m getting interested....
I really hope PS5 gets it's own VR, the controller just isn't up to the task anymore and a 4K screen will do wonders for image clarity
@mrellis1181 @SoulChimera even with super sampling there is only so much they can achieve on a relatively low resolution screen and it badly needs a new controller. I hoping for a revision next year with maybe a few titles in between extending the life of the original
It would be nice to have new PS VR from the very beginning. I missed PSVR on PS4 because i want to wait for new one and i am looking forward to playing beat saber etc. Hope Half Life Alyx will release on PS5.
I am guessing it has to do with the reduced load times of the SSD. I love my PSVR but the load screens can seem endless when your captive in your headset. With the way this game looks it may need to take full advantage of on demand loading.
@carlos82 it’s not really just about the graphic fidelity. It’s the power. For instance, Gran Turismo Sport suffers because the PS4 isn’t powerful enough to support more cars on the track.
The graphics will be noticeably pushed by the PS5, but we will see all of the PS4 limitations improved drastically.
But of course, the better option is, we get all new hardware and the moves get dropped for good.
Ps4 + psvr= ps3 visual quality.
Ps5 + psvr= ps4 visual quality?
@SirRealDeal Debatable comment. The headset is a relatively low (in comparison to other HMDs) 960x1080 per eye, but it has a fantastic refresh rate of 120 Hz.
I have one on an OG and another on a Pro. While many games run at a sub-1080 resolution on the plain PS4, a Pro will do nearly all games at above 1080 and supersample down to 1080. This increases fidelity by a very good margin in some games (Astrobot is a great example), but we are still dealing with that 960x1080 matrix per eye.
Temporal reconstruction for 120fps does a good job (again, Astrobot), but native 120 is noticeably smoother (Kotrix).
I expect that the PS5 will be operating in Pro mode for all back compatibility games to allow for the best visuals for those, and new PS5 games using the existing headset will give us supersampling on all new titles - with better visuals (more detailed) due to the power of the machine - but as far as the headset goes - the only increase that the PS5 will free us from currently is all PS5-PSVR games can now run at 120fps natively.
I'm purposely not mentioning the Moves. We clearly need better controllers than those things.
@ApostateMage This.
@SarcasticPeanut That would still be fine as it is a huge upgrade.
