Update: While our first look at PlayStation 5's first roster of releases will be restricted to 1080p and 30 frames-per-second, Sony has confirmed that 4K footage will follow soon after. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, he clarified: "The broadcast will be 1080/30, but the majority of trailers will be in 4K on YouTube after the show."
Original Story: Sony’s hotly anticipated PlayStation 5 reveal event will be restricted to 1080p and 30 frames-per-second, as the consequences of coronavirus mean this “eased” the pre-recorded livestream’s production process. “The games you’ll see on Thursday will look even better when you play them on PS5 with a 4K TV, as you’d expect,” explained the PlayStation Blog’s Sid Shuman.
It’s not hard to imagine how bouncing gigantic raw 4K files around the Internet could have caused headaches for PlayStation employees working from home, although it’s a bit of a shame that our first proper look at next-gen games will be at a lower resolution and framerate than the titles may actually run at. Hopefully less compressed footage follows.
Shuman added that there will be a few treats in store for audiophiles as well, presumably pertaining to the PS5’s 3D audio technology: “It’s best if you watch while wearing headphones, if you can – there’s some cool audio work in the show, and it might be harder to appreciate if it’s pumped through your phone or laptop speakers.” Time to dig out those AirPods, eh?

Yeah... that's ok. I don't care about 4k. I do want 60 fps in the games themselves though.
@Nem Pretty much how I feel. Framerate over resolution any day. It irks me that devs do it the other way around, though I suppose it is easier to sell pretty graphics than buttery smooth framerate.
One of the reasons I'd rather stick to 1080p TVs. It just feels like a huge waste of hardware and internet bandwidth to transfer 4K images around the web. Imagine using all those resources for something other than a new resolution that we can't even notice unless the TV is huge! Not to mention it would reduce the demand on Netflix/YouTube/Other servers...
Anyway, I'll definitely watch with my headphones, let's see what this new audio tech is all about.
Hour+ long in 4k for what will probably be a very heavily-viewed livestream video would probably cause headaches. I’m sure the individual trailers will be uploaded later on after the livestream in 4k.
That’s what happened with the recent State of Plays.
About 480p.i dont care if the ps5 is. 240p still watching it.but definitely 1080p is all good.word up son
Lmao, live-streaming in 4K 60FPS would be an absolute nightmare, this is perfectly fine. It’s possible they’ll upload the game trailers in 4K after the event anyway since it’ll be from the source. It’s live, I don’t know what people were expecting.
Aslong as its gameplay on display im happy.
I'm sure some people will try and squeeze some console war nonsense out of this, somehow. But it makes sense, and like has already been stated, we're likely getting 4K60 uploads later anyway.
1080p or whatever, my ***** body is ready
As long as we get actual next gen gameplay then it shouldn't be an issue.
And even then, we will have macro blocks everywhere on the stream! Eheh
@AJDarkstar To be clear, they are referring to the resolution and framerate of the stream, not of the PS5 games.
@nessisonett Technically not a livestream, though, is it? But yeah, I get it!
This is a non issue. I never even considered it being streamed in 4K live.
@get2sammyb broadcast would be more appropriate than calling it a livestream I guess.
@LemonHaze the videos will likely be uploaded in 4K after the broadcast.
I'll be ok with 1080/30 - they can always upload the 4k/60 video afterwards...
I can understand limiting the stream to 1080p.... but 30fps?
I do have a Sony Platinum Headset. Is that supposed to work? But if the stream is via YouTube, I guess I rather watch with my Dolby Atoms system?
Best screen in this apartment is 2K. So can't see it anyway if at 4K.
Just tell me what the big new PS5 games are - can be a 720p PowerPoint presentation. Start showing games.
Since it's at 4 pm ET, I will work through my lunch so I can watch it. 🥳
Make the games runs at 60fps.
Don't care if the stream is 1080p or 30fps. Streams always looks bad anyways for all the compression.
It would be silly to complain about it. There are possibly a lot of different studios showing gameplay from ps5 so it makes sense.
It's easier if it's only one game.
@JJ2 Doesn't stop Nintendo from rendering literally every Nintendo Direct at 1080p 60fps.
@PcTV
'This eased the show’s production process during a time when many of our team and developers are working from home. The games you’ll see on Thursday will look even better when you play them on PS5 with a 4K TV, as you’d expect. '
@JJ2 Nintendo already released a Direct during the pandemic. Xbox also released their First Look video only a month ago. Both hitting 60fps.
A lot of video editors I know work mostly from home to begin with, including myself.
I’m really disappointed by this. Here’s the long awaited showcase of the PS5, and what we get is a promise that it will look better in real life, promise.
@Grimwood
That’s a strange statement. I’m not sure if you’ve seen a good 4K tv and done any direct comparison. I personally have flicked between the resolutions on my 4K OLED tv and the difference are really clear and obvious . Not sure that makes me dumb. Maybe just better eye sight than you. I guess on a phone or a cheap set people might be clutching at straws to notice a difference. But on a 55inch screen the difference is night and day.
@PcTV Congrats with that.
@gingerfrog By this point I think anyone who thinks 4K is worthless are the people that are yet to experience it.
@PcTV
Idk. Maybe not the same sort of gameplay as xbox?
Most people watch in low quality anyway.
Edit.
I haven't got a 4k TV yet.
Resolution and framerate wont matter much for a first look but I'm sure the details will show anyway.
4K doesn't impress me. You can put 1080p and 4K next to each other, in a store, in a setting specifically meant to show off 4K, using video made to emphasize how "good" 4K looks.
And all I see is a slightly nicer image. In a set up that is designed to maximize the impact of 4K over 1080p and I'm just not impressed.
It's really a disappointment to me that all people care about in gaming these days are frame-rates, resolution and console specs.
Hopefully the PS5 reveal will have their new killer title that only the PS4 has that makes me want the system. Some awesome, ground breaking new game to totally blow me out of the water and shatter my currently low expectations.
But neither "next gen" console, not PS5 nor XboxX has done that yet.
@Grimwood "Noone would see a difference to 4k anyway. Sure, they say they do because they are dumb and believe advertisements. but yeah."
Another boring nonsensical comment from you i see🤷♂️🤦♂️. Quite ironically tho you can see a massive difference between 1080p and 4k quite clearly so id question who is the dumb one really?. Pop down to specsavers. I believe they do free eye tests at the moment.
@PcTV
I m sorry for yet another reply.
Look I get it when you play framerate matters and all. I dont get it for a first look. Who cares if it's even 24fps like the xbox first Hellblade 2 teaser?
All I ask is they show 'some' real gameplay even if some trailers are fine
Sounds like an excuse to temper expectations. They've had 6 plus months to get this one pre rendered stream ready. Coronavirus or not this should be in 4k.
I will start a riot in my mancave if they postpone it again...
Sounds a bit dubious to me.
I get that 4k files are big, but it's not like they haven't had time to sort this kind of stuff out. Sounds like they're not confident with the graphical fidelity of the games in their current state to showcase at 4k, and at a steady frame rate. I'd love to think that this is me just being overly cynical here, but I fear that it's more than that...
Edit: Also anyone here who says they can't tell the difference clearly has never really used or played with a decent 4k television before. Or if they have they have diminished eyesight, because there is a significant difference between 1080p and 4k, the fidelity and crispness of the picture is easily noticeable.
Omg does it matter if it's not in 4k for a reveal when after they will be loads of more footage on YouTube and other media sights that will be in 4k.
@nessisonett it's pre recorded
I hope sony release the full 4k video file, I want to watch it on my 4k tv
@Nem I have quite a nice Samsung 8 series 4K but would still prefer 60fps over resolution, 4K is nice but not a necessity.
@Grindagger
I'm with you on the 4K vs 1080p view. Every single one of my friends that enters my "mancave" with 4K TV (calibrated and all) and my 7.1 Atmos homecinema is always like "wow, how do you get so great picture on your TV ?"
And when they try a game on my Pro / 4K TV they always say the same thing (just in different words hehe) "I need a new TV - this look so much better than on my Pro / random 1080p.
And for those who disagree, watch Ghost Of Tsushima trailer in 1080p and then 4K on a good 4K TV and then tell me you can't see the difference.. If not, you might need glasses, not kidding.
4k? 60fps? My preferred setup for this reveal would be a hot cuppa and some choccy hob nobs.
@get2sammyb what time are you watching it? You even called it a livestream in your article 😉
@Grindagger I think it's more to do with it being streamed live which will make it much more difficult with so many watching at the same time. I'm pretty sure either the event or individual videos will be uploaded in 4K afterwards
@Grimwood what?? Maybe glasses would be a better purchase than a ps5...
@carlos82 I'm pretty sure the footage will be prerecorded. Especially considering the nature of the current situation.
It's highly unlikely it's going to be a livestream of someone playing in real time. And if it is, that doesn't make much sense, because you could just script the gameplay to make it look like its live, and keep the fidelity and image quality decent.
@Grindagger yes the footage is pre-recorded but that is still then streamed out live at that time with potentially millions watching it
@Zeke68 so are you saying that you cant tell the difference because i just watched it on my 2 tv's in my front room (gaming 4k tv and main tv which is 4k knocked down to 1080) and i could clearly see the difference. Maybe its just me that notices the difference?
@carlos82 Oh i see...
So, the actual footage is only in 1080p because of the actual stream, not the footage itself being the limitation.
Hmmm, well...Not sure how I feel about this. I don't get why it's got to be live in that case, it's not like there is a live Q&A taking place, or any interaction from fans during the event, so what exactly would be the difference between a prerecorded conference, and a live one in this particular instance, other than just being obstinately stubborn about it being a live event?
@Grimwood
I guarantee you I can tell the difference. I'm about 9 feet from a 65" and I can easily tell if it's 4K or 1080p. There can be close to 4k res that's hard to tell from true 4k, but if you watch 4k and then drop it to 1080p you're gonna see the difference immediately.
@Zeke68 so, does surround sound improve your image quality, or are you just trying to squeeze some stealth bragging in there? 😂
@Grindagger It is not a live show, it is pre-recorded which will be streamed to everyone 'live' on Thursday. And it is in 1080p 30fps due the issues producing everything in 4k because of everyone working from home, not because of Sony wanting to save the bit rate. I hope this clarifies things a bit as it looks like some have got their wires crossed with this.
@BrettAwesome I used to be the same until I got a 4k tv myself and started to watch content in my own home. I think HDR has made a big difference together with 4K to make everything 'pop'.
@JohnnyShoulder Yes, i'm not confused. This is exactly how I understood it.
Why does it need to be streamed live? Can't it just be released an an event for people to watch in full 4k glory, rather than an unnecessary live stream?
From my understanding, a live stream is mostly necessary for events that are, well, live.... and on site at a location somewhere, like E3 for example, secondly, for those people who are actually doing something live, and/or interacting with the live audience in real time.
From what I can see, this is a faux live event, that serves no purpose other than it being "live" for the sake of it.
@Kidfunkadelic83
I think you misread it it. "I" is my friend in the example, not "I" like in me.. ?
@BrettAwesome
Yeah sorry, I've been messing about with my homecinema and tweaking the setup over the last few days so that's been alot on my mind, so that was probably an unneccessary remark from my side, so yeah, it pretty much ended up as "bragging", sorry for that
But of course the surround sound improves my image quality, didn't all know that it does ?! /jk
@Zeke68 sorry man i got the person you were agreeing with mixed up with the guy who said their is no difference between 4k and 1080. My bad.
I'm pretty sure that most of your brains can't even handle Knack 3 at 60fps, so this is for your own safety.
@Grindagger Well it's not even that, I'm not sure why some are even labelling it as live. It will just be like any other content that is put up on YouTube and the like. The only difference is that there will be a lot more people watching it when it goes up, so the quality may take a hit.
Like I said before, the show was not even made from the ground up in 4K due to the problems this would prove when producing it. The way it is being presented, live or otherwise has no bearing on it being shown in 4K.
@Kidfunkadelic83
No worries
I can understand the broadcast being in 1080p @30fps, however, I want to see it or more specifically the gameplay footage displayed in 4k as soon as possible. Because I do want to see what both the PS5 and XSX are capable of. I want to see the frame rates and the resolution as it will be on the systems. I get that might not be possible in a stream watched by millions, but upload the uncompressed files soon after please Sony.
I think i will hold off from watching the live stream and just watch it when its released in all its glory.
who cares if its 1080. 4K or even 480p as long as we get a reveal!
really what was the point of the title, apart from click bait!
for those all going on about frame rate after upgrading my PC im expecting more than 60 FPS at 1080 for most games on PS5. after upgrade getting 100 plus on most games now on pc, with older games giving really bizarre framerates .
i could never see a huge difference for me between 30 and 60 but 120 is like night and day
always surprised on this site how many people don't own a 4K tv, everyone i know does, does it all depend on where people live? from UK and as said everyone i know has one
Pfffsshhh.... If it’s not in 8K / 120 fps then I’m not wasting my time. 😜
So how many pc games will be announced.
It doesn't bother me, because my village internet handles just about 1080p/30fps.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with 1080P 30fps for the reveal. this is coming from a guy who owns two 4K TVs and two 1080P TVs. while I'll admit my PS4 pro looks much better on my 4K TVs with HDR I can still appreciate the reasoning behind Sony's 1080P 30fps reveal, it's obvious with all the internet throttling that it would've been hell for them to produce all this content in 4K.. I'm just happy we finally get to see the PS5 in action (so to speak) running games we've been dreaming about for the better part of two years now lol happy gaming my friends 😉✌️
@The_ghostmen
Do you mean the cross gen games?
After the Games Reveal event ... will we get the Console Reveal event?
State of Play, E3, etc. the livestream quality always sucks. 1080p was always a standard. 4K videos will be available after the stream is done, as before.
To make a point - State of Play Ghost of Tsushima was "pre-recorded" alas just a simple video and was streamed in 1080p with 4k recording available afterwards. NOBODY had a problem with that.
I agree - they could just release the 4k video right from the start, but I suppose that would strip them of the privilige of conducting their show as they want to. Like this, there's no rewinding by users and Sony can spread the message stepbystep as originally intended, as it would be on real-livestream.
As @JJ2 already confirmed, 4K is coming. Get hyped during livestream and get mindblowned in 4k right after that again.
This is a non-issue really. We all know whatever they show will most likely play on PS5 at 4K, and the trailers will be up in 4K after the fact anyway.
Can't wait for the broadcast!
Bit disappointing tbh.
Obviously it's not the end of the world but would've liked to see it revealed in best quality possible, particularly seeing as we've been waiting a while anyway.
I thought the video quality of the Ghost of Tsushima look was poor fwiw and did note so at the time @SilenceCZ
@Tharsman
It's a video not a game. Framerates are important in playing games, not watching games.
Do you complain about the cinema having only 24 FPS?
You are just arguing for the sake of it (unless you genuinely don't know what you are talking about).
@roe Exactly, it was obvious since the first second that the quality is not what we're used to from GoT trailers. Right after the livestream I re-watched already uploaded 4K version and gosh what a difference. I must say Sony's 4K uploads quality is very good, giving a great resemblance of how the game will run on PS4 Pro.
@get2sammyb Could PushSquare emphasize to readers rewatching 4K recordings on their 4K displays if available so we can have a richer discussion about the PS5 reveal afterwards? Same goes for the debate about 3D audio if there's one about to be used by Sony in the reveal. Or perhaps a seperate article highlighting both.
still hoping for performance modes to be a thing in each game so we can choose 1080p 60fps with ultra textures.
@Angeljuice you must not watch too many game reveals. It’s very common for Digital Foundry to analyze frame rate and resolution consistency on reveal game videos. Of course, that becomes impossible when the vid gets capped at 30fps (unless they still find dips bellow 30fps, that is.)
@Tharsman the videos are going to be uploaded in original resolution (presumably also original FPS) after the broadcast, they’ve already announced that. I’m sure they’ll analyze those and not the broadcast...
Why is everyone surprised at this? The last two State of Play events were 1080p/30 with the 4K version coming afterwards.
Yes, I understand it's PS5 and people are excited, but come on...this isn't new.
@LemonHaze Absolutely true. 1080p although fine is quite the step back after native 4K...and if its OLED 4K then you will never go back.
So you can all comprehend how a broadcast is different from a source video but you can't understand how someone's internet can affect the quality of a stream... Your arguments are all a convenience...
Really glad the trailers will be made available in 4K after the live stream. I know it's not the be all and end all, but I do want to see what these games will look like in 4k.
I'll make my mind up after the show. Hopefully by then 4k versions of the sections I'm interested in will be available. I'm sure Digital Foundry will have lots to say.
I prefer 60FS as well but higher resolutions are nice. Let's hope most, if not all games, run at a smooth 60FPS and something well above 1080p. Even 1440p looks phenomenal if you're not right in front of your TV or monitor!
@RenanKJ I think the internet will handle the transition of “relatively minor” 4K content files, internet backbone links are exceeding 400GBps. That is 50 billion bytes, over 47GB per second.
@Kidfunkadelic83 He's actually correct. There's no picture quality difference between 1080 and 4k, unless you're too close to the TV and you're starting to see pixels. The reason you can tell the difference when you downscale on a 4k TV is because you're downscaling. So 1 pixel is then having to be represented by 4 pixels, which of course then makes the 1080 look worse. But if you're at the "correct" seating distance you won't see any difference. It's like looking at a beach. From a distance you don't see the individual grains of sand. Get up close and there they are. The things that do make a difference is HDR and the introduction of OLED. 1080s never had HDR and older 4ks don't. Higher resolutions are just there to allow people to sit nearer than is sensible to bigger and bigger screens.
NOW you dismiss resolution as unimportant!?
***** you lot. Seriously.
@BAMozzy will this be better than the broadcast quality of The State of Plays ? 🤔🤔
@Eldritch well he should stop being a whiner like every other negative post he writes, on every other thread and just buy an oled HDR 10 bit panel then. Hed be happy as he gets a better picture and we would because thats one less negative thing for him to moan about.
Good to know the information tho, cheers👍
I bet you people(mainly the Haters) will say it looks rubbish on their crappy TV's or Computer Monitors It's a shame I haven't got a 4K TV yet for when they show it in 4K but I will get one around the same time I get a PS5 later this year
Sounds good to me. Reliable livestream with no lag/stuttering/buffering issues, then afterwards rewatch them all in glorious 4k for the full effect. Perfectly happy with that, it's what I do most E3s anyway after watching the conferences.
@Dobbos There is a lot more compression with streaming a video over the internet. You can upload a video with literally NO compression - although youtube can add compression but perhaps not as much compression as required to stream.
It really does depend on how its uploaded and what compression is used. You can upload a 4k 60 video with absolutely NO compression and download it and play it flawlessly at 4k 60 - however the bandwidth required to stream uncompressed 4k at 60fps is extremely high. A 5min 4k/60 video, uncompressed, could take much longer than 5mins to download and much much longer to upload.
Therefore, an uploaded video can be MUCH higher quality than streamed - much more than just a 'resolution' jump...
Just bring out "The Machine",I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to get a look at this beast.I'll definitely have my new platinums at the ready to fully enjoy the richer sounds coming out of the stream.Good luck Sony,we're counting on you to entertain us and blow us away.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I think the giveaway is in his name. I think his real happiness comes from misery. Remember the wise saying... don't feed the trolls.
@Eldritch 😂😂
@Jurgens-Red-Army have used the gold at all? I have the golds but have been looking at the platinum but dont want to shell out the money if there is not a clear as day difference. Im also pretty happy with the golds but am always up for better sound if its noticeable.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Hey bud,no i've not tried the gold headphones,as such i can't give you an informed decision.My Mrs bought me mine at xmas and what i did was ask a friend who happened to have/had a few different set of headphones over the years.He told me to pick the platinum ones if i had a choice and his advice to me was worth it as they've turned out be one of the best pieces of kit i've ever owned imo.When used with the headset companion app and set to Uncharted 4 the sound is something else.Totally worth the money mate,hope it helps.
@RenanKJ how can people still sit there and not tell the difference between 4k and 1080p, especially in games. Lord.
@Eldritch do you have a 4k TV?
@Spinachie Easy, try to spot a difference in a 32" TV wearing glasses for astigmatism. To be honest, even without astigmatism it's hard to spot any difference in a 32" TV. It all comes down to how big your TV is and how far you're from it.
@Jurgens-Red-Army you can set the golds with the app too and they also sound great. Bass is good but not as good as my old TB stealth 700's but they kept cutting out from interference from my router and i had nothing but trouble with them so decided to sell. I think the golds are also a simulated 7.1. May look at some comparisons online or just wait until i get my ps5. Cheers buddy.
Good know thanks everyone
@playstation1995 You definitely do care of it's in 240p. Even on a phone anything less than 480p looks like trash.
@SegaBlueSky Reliable? Have you met Sony?
@Grindagger Agreed, this "LIVE" event is primarily for generating hype not not because it serves a purpose for it to be so. Most of it is already pre-recorded anyway. Even "live gameplay" won't have any impact without the ability to examine the hardware being used. With the remote nature of this reveal they could be using anything and we have no way of knowing different.
@gingerfrog totally agree, it's like the difference between standard def. compared to high def.
Watching 4K videos seems to make it look more 3 dimensional without using 3D glasses. I watched some wildlife programmes on YouTube in 4K, that certainly shows the difference from HD to 4K.
@Spinachie I have 2 1080s, a 4k, and a 4k OLED if that helps? I use a 1080 for the PS4 Pro as I prefer frame rate over resolution when the game gives me the choice.
I am fine with both. I do not care about 60 fps at all.
