Electronic Arts has detailed the sort of enhancements PlayStation 5 owners can look forward to when it comes to its range of titles, and the results aren't entirely consistent. Apex Legends appears to come out on top the most with a performance and resolution boost up to 1440p, with even more upgrades set to arrive next year. However, Star Wars: Squadrons is being left out in the cold on PS5. It receives improved lighting, while the Xbox Series X is treated to support for 120 frames-per-second and a 2160p resolution if you decide to halve it. Why on earth that is? We don't know.
Elsewhere, The Sims 4 will boast of improved load times and a smoother frame rate, and the same goes for UFC 4. EA states it will detail what the next-gen upgrades for FIFA 21 and Madden NFL 21 entail at a later date. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered won't receive any special treatment on PS5 whatsoever.
We have to return to the topic of Star Wars: Squadrons, though. Why is the Xbox Series X being treated to such huge enhancements while all the PS5 gets is better lighting? Surely PS5 can handle the frame rate boost too? Let's hope we get some answers. Are you looking forward to any of these next-gen updates? Let us know in the comments below.

Seems fairly lazy! How they can release NFS Hot Pursuit so close to next gen release date and not provide it with any improvements is ridiculous!
It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a technical reason for Squadrons not getting the update or a monetary reason. Better to wait for further information and not panic as of now.
sips tea Oh EA! [Laugh track plays]
@God_of_Nowt I'd guess this is a case of literally just tweaking some settings and not doing any optimisation, and that the game engine they're using along with any modifications happens to scale up better horizontally than vertically on the GPU, which is what the Series X has done
It's disappointing that Jedi Fallen Order isn't on this list. Even a patch that just allows 60fps at higher res would be welcome.
Unless the game's uncapped fram rate setting already runs at boosted res unlike other games that cap it at 1080p in this mode. Can anyone confirm?
@PeterN80 It’ll be upscaled from 1440p to 4K or downscaled to 1080p. Plenty games on PS4 Pro already employ this.
@PeterN80 That's referring to the signal that the PS5 outputs over HDMI. It can still run games at 1440p. They just won't output at that res on a 1440p monitor. It will be upscaled from 1080p. And on a 4K display this game will upscale to 2160p even though its internal res is half of that.
@nessisonett I would put my money on it being something to do with it being psvr compatible
@Weebleman That’s a very good shout actually. I’d be willing to bet on that too due to the whole game being PSVR compatible.
I can only think of a few scenarios why PS5 is getting the short end of the stick:
1) Microsoft paid them (EA) for specific upgrades or has some other deal with them on this
2) PS5 really is much weaker and can’t handle the upgrades, which seems plausible given the rumors and half-confirmation from Ubisoft (see AC Valhalla upscaled to 4K on PS5 instead of native)
3) Dev laziness (seems unlikely to me, but who knows)
4) the devs were given a hard deadline for updating all the SKUs, started with XBOX improvements, and ran out of time with the PS5 improvements
5) there’s some weird technical issue with the PS5 making it hard to implement all the upgrades
@Weebleman PSVR can do 120hz already.
OK serious question here. Why does push square sister page pure xbox do nothing but lick spencers brown eye but when it comes to ps5 news on push Square its all negative. Bunch of pathetic fanbois
Exclusive enhancement deals! Lol MS do have a close relationship with EA (see EA Access deal with Gamepass, Sony initially didn’t even want to allow EA Access...)
@SilkySmile89 but PSVR wont work with anything but PS4 games on PS5. If they patch it for PS5 to the extent of the other games it probably wont be compatible anymore. Folks who paid for it with vr in mind wont be to happy if they effectively patch out it out on ps5.
@Shstrick
1) possible, they already have a deal between Gamepass and EA Access
2) PS5 is the same 4K at 60fps as series X, due to ridiculous fanboy overeach they rewrote the announcement to clear up the (deliberate) misunderstanding.
3) Doubtful, but perhaps time restraints
4) Possible
5) Possible of course, but then that would go back to deadlines or laziness. However, all devs are saying how easy the PS5 is to work with, so we have no indication of this.
Another reason could be they needed more time on account of the PS4 version being VR compatible and they didn’t want to release a patch that broke that, and just decided it either wasn’t worth it or they didn’t have time.
Alternatively, because PS5 coded games can’t run PSVR games they would have had to work with two separate SKUs and didn’t want to.
PSVR will still be the best way to play by far on console anyway.
@Razrye888 Are you saying that Push Square should put a positive spin on this?
@Weebleman The patch (as all of these are) would be a PS5 version specific patch, not a PS4 version patch, so that isn't really a viable excuse since the PS4 version (even if playing on the PS5) would remain untouched by these changes.
@Weebleman That's actually a very good shout about PSVR. I hadn't really considered that. I reckon you might be onto something.
@get2sammyb Since PSVR doesn't work on PS5 titles (or PS4 titles with PS5 upgrades) then this would have zero impact on them.
It might impact PS4 games that get "unlocked" framerates on the PS4 Pro or similar, but those not legit PS5 "upgrade" patches, they just happen to work better on the PS5 than the PS4.
@thedevilsjester In a weird way, I can see how it could cause a problem. Here's the thing: Star Wars Squadrons is not being ported to next-gen platforms, it'll still run through backwards compatibility.
What we're seeing with stuff like Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone is that they're effectively unlocking the framerate and resolution when you play on PS5, but they're still the PS4 games. It may be that, for whatever reason, this would break the PSVR mode (or at least require a LOT more effort and testing), thus they've decided not to bother.
@Razrye888 Cause that's Xbox dedicated site? As for this site would u prefer that the push square staff lick Jim Ryan's brown eye? They have to turn every news to positive? also this isn't even them being negative, they are reporting factual news.
@Razrye888 We're really positive, though! Have you seen other sites?!
@Weebleman yes it can run only PS4 games, but if devs unlock the frame rate for their games, PSVR is capable of 1080p 120hz it's just limited by the PS4 hardware.
I think devs will be capable to run around that. Just offer a performance option that can run only on PS5. Same like Performance mode was not available on PS4 base models just on the PRO.
@get2sammyb I don't think that's how it works at all. You don't have PS5 specific logic in a PS4 game. At best you provide an uncapped/dynamic resolution PS4 Pro experience that is able to stretch its legs better on the PS5; but lets not confuse that for an actual PS5 upgrade.
I was waiting for next gen to buy this game, it was going to be my first EA game since Battlefield 1, I've made a point of not buying EA games. But this laziness is going to extend me not giving EA my money.
...Unless they release the Mass Effect trilogy, then I'll happily be a hypocrite lol
@thedevilsjester Well that's kinda what I'm saying. Because it's not PS5 specific logic, the PSVR features (which the Xbox doesn't have to deal with) add an extra layer of complication that they probably don't think justifies the time and effort.
@Razrye888 I think PushSquare does a pretty good job of just reporting it as it is, and sometimes that isn't positive and we have to take the good with the bad. It does no one any good to put their fingers in their ears and pretend like everything is always perfect.
@get2sammyb Then that is NOT a PS5 patch or upgrade as the title suggests.
Maybe it's a limitation Sony's backwards compatibility capabilities (maybe games can only run at max 60fps even with an unlocked framerate).
@thedevilsjester can you think of any other PSVR game thats receiving a patch for PS5?
Dont get me wrong, I could be way off the mark. It just seems odd that the only game with almost zero improvements is a psvr compatible title. Plus with Sony recently announcing that PSVR wont work with PS5 games it just kinda fits. Hello Games recently said something similar about no mans sky in that the upgrades aren't compatible with PSVR.
Microsoft and EA are partners and want people to get Gamepass, so, it makes sense.
I'd guess if Sony hasn't abandoned VR and PSVR 2 exists that there'll be a separate PS5 version that has all the Series X improvements and supports PSVR 2.
I think EA prioritize microsoft first because they have EA all access on gamepass, and there's business agreement with money involved of course.
I do get a kick out of all the "financial deal!!!!" comments because I always make sure to point out "keep the same energy you had when Sony were paying for timed exclusive games or content and you were praising that".
@AJDarkstar I don't think this is true at all, do you have a source?
VR is the best way to play it by far so Xbox is still behind
Well they could have put PSVR at full resolution on PS5 but since Sony said ***** PSVR I guess that is a no.
This is a VR game so difficult to do an update without touching the VR options. As stated you cannot play PS5 VR Games atm on PS5 and have to play the PS4 version instead. So this is clearly the answer. Otherwise it should be a seperate version and you would need to install both. PS4 VR and the PS5 without VR game. Second case: EA Play is in the gamepass.
@AJDarkstar The statement about them making PS4 patches that are exclusive to the PS5. Not PS5 patches for PS4 games (which makes it a PS5 game). This doesn't make any sense, not only logistically, but also knowing how the various SDKs work it doesn't make any sense. So do you know of a reliable source that actually states, clearly, that that's what they are doing? I can't say with 100% certainty that it's not happening like that, but I can make a pretty good educated guess, so if you know of an actual report on this it would surely clear things up.
More news of EA being EA. Reminds me of the old PC meme:
E!
A!
Ports!
Pay us agaaaain!
Who cares? They are crappy EA games.
I think this is going to be a common theme with multi platform games, Xbox will get all the shinies and we will get a slightly compromised version just with faster load times.
As long as the exclusives hold up in their own right them it will be Xbox all the way for multi plat stuff.
It's going to be OneX Vs PS4 PRO version again
EA are in bed with MS right now aren’t they with the EA play deal etc. Probably part of an agreement between them to improve series s over ps5...
@get2sammyb I was thinking the same as PSVR isn't native to PS5...
BUT isn't Wipeout in VR at 4K resolution and then supersampled in the 1080p headset?
If EA could give us that, that would be great!
🤷🏾♂️ Games not all that in way
Because of VR. This is obvious but push square has to have those clicks!
Microsoft payoff i expect.
You think this has something to do with the EA play partnership with Microsoft?
This is really disappointing...
@AJDarkstar I don't disagree that its a PS4 patch, but I don't think the patch is exclusive to the PS4 game on the PS5. That would require an extra level of logistics out of each console specifically for the few games that might want to do that. It doesn't seem like a reasonable approach when that patch can be applied to the PS4 version on both systems as an additional mode, even if they have to make it clear that the PS4 Pro might not make the best out of the mode.
This seems to do more with the fact that past gen games can't really tap into full benefit of the ps5 hardware the way Xbox games are.
Sony has forced developers to rerelease the game in the Ps5 format if they really want take advantage of the new hardware with new trophies, etc.
I fully expect to see a lot of backlash from gamers down the line, accusing developers or favoring Xbox over PS, because in reality, it's going to take resources to get older games up to par on the newer hardware, resources and money that game developers just simply don't waste.
It's a big difference between deploying a patch for older games to take advantage of the new hardware on Xbox, vs having to recertify the game code for a whole new release on the ps5.
@AJDarkstar That doesn't mean that its a PS5 exclusive patch. A PS4 game cannot directly take advantage of any PS5 features or hardware. To do so it would need to be recompiled with the PS5 SDK toolchain (and using PS5 versions of 3rd party libraries), effectively making it a PS5 upgrade patch.
With "unlocked" modes, or modes that don't quite reach their full potential on the PS4/PS4 Pro, they will obviously indirectly benefit from the CPU/GPU performance improvements (as we have seen in the DF videos)
I think we are saying the same thing, but have a few details different. Calling it a PS5 patch if its just patching the PS4 game (and not making it a PS5 game) is misleading; and said patch would still apply to the original PS4 title; even if its usefulness would be limited.
@kabal82 Do you have a source for saying a XO -> XSX upgrade doesn't require recertification but PS4 -> PS5 does or are you just guessing? (I am not saying you are wrong; just that if its true I would like to know from a reliable source)
Either way, "down the line" no one is going to care. BC on both systems makes old games play amazingly well (see DF videos on both systems), and most games are not going to have direct upgrades to the next generation (on either console), so at worst its a small issue during a small time frame.
@AJDarkstar I think you misunderstand me. Making a PS4 patch that doesn't come to the PS4 version when played on the PS4 but comes to the PS4 version when played on the PS5 (especially when you take into account using the same external HDD you use on the PS4 with the PS5) is not likely to happen; but even if it did (which I don't think makes any sense logistically), we should NOT call it a PS5 patch (because that has pretty specific expectations); but instead a "PS5 exclusive PS4 patch"
My guess is that, for these few situations, the PS4 game gets a patch (that applies to the PS4 Pro) that adds a new "unlocked" or "quality" mode, that is still selectable on the PS4 Pro.
(I am not trying to argue with you, just explain what I think is more or less likely based on the effort that it would take to make it work for the very few titles that would work in this way). We won't really know until we get it in our own hands.
But for why? Surely, enhancements are coming? Can you "buy" exclusive enhancements now per console like you can timed-exclusivity? WTH? 🤷♂️
Anyone know when the XSX patch is coming out for 120z?
