Who better than Bluepoint to tackle one of the medium’s most sought-after remakes? Given the studio’s stellar track record, it was hard not to immediately expect greatness from its next big project. Despite those sky-high expectations, Demon’s Souls manages to not only be an extraordinary technical showcase and a remarkable demonstration of master-class environmental design, but it also delivers a deliciously dismal good time.
Unlike the other big-budget remakes that came out earlier in the year, Demon’s Souls faithfully adheres to its source material as more of an authentic recreation than a total reimagining, but it’s all the better for it. Its iconic difficulty, peerless personality, and engaging environments all remain intact and are better than ever courtesy of some tactful improvements.
Chief among this remake’s enhancements is the visual facelift – the game’s graphical overhaul is so good that it ushers Demon’s Souls into the conversation for the best-looking games ever made. The beautiful balance it strikes between fidelity and fluidity will make it one of the greatest showcases of the PS5’s power for years to come.
That’s not to say that Demon’s Souls is style over substance, as it retains the original’s punishing but purposeful action RPG gameplay loop. Each trip through the realm’s languid locales provides you with more souls and goodies to bolster your current character’s build, but it’s the knowledge and experience you’ll amass with exploration and experimentation that prove most beneficial. There’s no substitute for your first trip through a Souls game, and this remake gives that rare opportunity to Dark Souls fans and series newcomers alike.
Some smaller improvements serve to further chisel what was a rough-cut PS3 gem into a beautifully faceted current-gen diamond. Omnidirectional movement and extremely-welcome inventory improvements smooth over the friction that’d come from picking up the original now that the Souls series has since progressed, and coy additions like further fleshed out side-quests and new shortcuts only enhance an already excellent game while giving a little wink to fans in the process.
All of this comes alongside an atmosphere that is second to none in video games. Every area in Demon’s Souls oozes an oppressive energy amid its abandoned landscapes that drip with unspoken history. Each one of the game's varied locations is breathed into life by soundscapes that are startlingly good. Whether it’s a scream echoing in the distance or a rhythmic rumbling coming from an abyss below – the smallest of auditory details goes such a long way in giving every scene a tangible sense of presence that’ll stick with you long after experiencing it that first time. You’d be hard-pressed to find a game that sounds as good as this does.
Demon’s Souls is ultimately a tremendous triumph for a studio that’s at the height of its craft. Bluepoint had the unenviable task of refreshing one of the PS3’s defining classics, and it managed to delicately straddle the line between faithful recreation and inventive reinterpretation splendidly. What it’s graced us with is a Demon’s Souls that will continue to stand the test of time while also providing the PS5 with a killer app that accentuates the new console’s dominant debut. FromSoftware must be proud.

Bluepoint definitely put a lot of soul into this remake.
Not just game of the year.easily one of the best game ever made.from ps3 to ps5 its legendary.word life.word is bond.word to your mother.word to god.word up son
Having never played the original Demons Souls this version was like an injection of interest in getting me back on track with Souls games in general. It's a masterpiece and I feel it's slightly better than the other masterpiece that is BloodBorne .
This was my 1st Souls game and it quickly became my favorite PS5 experience so far!!
My first ever souls game and easily the best PS5 game I've played thus far. kudos to bluepoint for nailing it.
Gave in to the hype surrounding it, was my first souls game and within an hour it also became my last souls game, and yes I read up about how difficult these games are but still gutted I wasted £65, hopefully can get my money back on ebay.
Very good game, my game of the year for sure. And probably the best launch game I have ever played. Polished as hell. It does lose some marks for being a remake though, even if I never played the original. I mean imagine if that was a new IP.. what a launch game that would have been.
My seemingly insurmountable quest to secure a PS5 feels a little ironic when my key motivating factor and eventual payoff is a seemingly insurmountable quest through Boletaria...
This game is just amazing and I'm just happy that I can finally play the first Souls game! It's so good but also bad. Not the fault of Bluepoint for it being bad. The bosses are some of the most easiest in the Souls series and I think Bluepoint could've taken the risk to make them more difficult. I get it, it's a remake and not a reimagining but still there are some flaws in Demon's Souls that I'd have liked to have been fixed.
This isn't really a fair goty list candidate in my mind. Granted, I'm biased by not being a fan of the FromSoft formula at all, despite owning all their games.
It's a fairly niche audience game/genre by nature, and this particular outing, while very nicely done for old fans and beginners, remains literally, intentionally a PS3 game, limited in design by PS3 hardware, and this faithfully recreates that. Dark souls is a more modern series than this game, this is just an old game updated to look modern. It didn't, purposely, update the design.
That's not at all a knock against what blue point has built here. It's great to have old classic games rebuilt to to keep from vanishing due to old hardware graphics and input limitations. I just don't see it as something that can serve as a goty list entry.
Slowly chipping away at the game, beat The Penetrator earlier today, so far I've done Phalanx, Tower Knight, Penetrator, Armor Spider, Flamelurker, Dragon God and The Adjudicator . Haven't touched world 5 yet but I must be close to the bosses in 4-2 and 3-1, Excellent game and i love wiping out entire areas just to admire how great it looks!
@UltimateOtaku91 can help you through it if you want? The start of the game is the hardest part tbh.
A demo would maybe convince more people. The price tag will put many people off. This I feel will apply to many PS5 titles going forward with a £70 price tag.
Never played the original Souls games and didn’t really enjoy Bloodborne (far too used to modern checkpoints).
This game looks absolutely gorgeous but I’m just not sure if I’d like it. I don’t mind difficult games but I find having to replay long sections of games (if I die) really frustrating.
I’ve convinced myself I can wait for the PS5 Pro/Slim... so maybe, by the time I do get a PS5, this game will be cheap enough for me try without buyers remorse.
It's on fire!
@NEStalgia fair points, but it doesn’t sound like you’ve actually bought and played this version? Personally, after only experiencing a couple hours of the 2009 original and spending over 100 hours on this remake I can confidently say Demons Souls for PS5 feels like a modern Souls game, so much so I’m hard pressed to try the other “newer” games in the series because they could feel archaic compared to Bluepoints remake
My game of the of the year nom. I nearly didn’t buy this game, having bought bloodborne and finding it too difficult, but I didn’t really fancy Miles
Morales so went for this instead. £70 well spent. Despite finding it difficult to begin with I persevered and loved every minute of it. Nearly completed now and I fully intend on trying to platinum it. Astonishing! I even want to go back to bloodborne again after, although with the rumours of a ps5 version I may hold off for the time being
Demon's Souls is the GOTY, no doubt. What a masterpiece.
Jaw droppingly good.
I played every souls game except this one when it was on PS3 and I didn't have one.
Only still near the start but the polish and atmosphere is superb. Going to play more now.
My first Souls game. Absolutely loving it
I would guess I’m
Around 70% through my first play through.
I would say the first 5 - 10 hours is the hardest.
After that you can farm places to level up and make the game easier.
@Total_Weirdo I really hope it’s not MGS, people seem to want it but between the original and Twin Snakes I think it’s a waste of time and effort.
That said it’s hard to see what else really needs remaking but I’m sure they’ll think of something. A port of Tomb Raider Anniversary would do me in the meantime!
@fR_eeBritney I think you'd definitely enjoy that. It's such a beautiful and amazing game. I played through all of the Dark Souls and Bloodborne (and NiOh series) more than once and i can tell you Demon Soul's not that hard at all. It's challenging but much more easier than the other soulslike games. Just give it a go you won't regret it!
Spent 200+ hours on Demon’s Souls back in the day on PS3. This is such a faithful remake, almost to a fault. It’s so fantastic, and we are all lucky to get to enjoy this game (for the first time or again) in all of its next-gen glory.
But part of definitely me wishes they’d taken a few more risks overall. Someone mentioned making boss fights more challenging... I guess as someone who’s played the sh*t out of it already, that’s easy for me to say...
Crossing my fingers for 6th Archstone DLC—we can dream, right?!
@UltimateOtaku91 It can be difficult, but I would just recommend playing it by using magic. Much much easier, but you do still need to take your time. It's not for everyone though mate, it's always a risk.
@2cents Very true. I will buy it eventually when it hits the sales. I had it in my cart at launch and at $60 would have given into hype. At $70 i had to question over and over why I'm going to blow that kind of money on a game in a series I know I never enjoy. So self control won out and when it hits $20 or even $40 I'll probably jump in. I did the full $60 on sekiro at launch and still have no idea why I did that! I have 'em all. Souls 1-3, sekiro, ds ps3, bloodborne. I return to them periodically to try to understand the hype. I'm not fond of any of them, but bloodborne is the only one I truly hate beyond it just being "not my style".
But Bluepoint went to great lengths to not change the game... So inherently it's still a design limited to the PS3s needs. For better or worse. That doesn't hinder it from being a classic, and i like that Bluepoint doesn't change the underlying games they remake, same for SotC. But it's still awkward calling a new "client" for a 2 generation old game beneath it a 2020 goty contender, imo.
Less awkward than the inevitable 1st place winner of tlou2......a game that divisive seems really out of place as a goty winner. I'll cross my fingers and hope they give that #2 and go with GoT at #1 just for sanity.
@NEStalgia I totally understand your reluctance to drop that much money on what’s considered an “old game” especially after feeling burned in the past
You have no idea how badly I wanted to splurge on the Digital Deluxe Edition but after tax it would have come to $102!! However I don’t regret buying the standard edition because I’m able to experience Demons Souls for the first time in its best playable state possible, with a rejuvenated online community!! I’m just happy that for once my luxury purchase seems justified and couldn’t be happier with the experience so far
I also foresee TLOU2 being #1 and would be stoked for GoT stealing the top spot!!
Bought it on launch day. Spent a little bit of time, but my attention wound up being turned to some simpler fare, like Miles Morales. I’m back to it, though. I honestly want to experience the tech more than grind through, though, and would have preferred a difficulty setting. All you purists can still play the game the way you want it.
@Ear_wiG I guess they were afraid of ruining the artistic design of a lot of things with the bosses(besides the score ofc). Maybe with help from Miyazaki they wouldn't be so worried of doing things a little differently.
Sell me that damn PS5 already, I want to play Demon souls!
An excellent game, though I feel I ruined my experience by going through it a bit too fast (least I'm assuming that's what happened, since I Platinumed the game in about a couple of weeks compared to 4 months for something like Bloodborne) so it didn't quite leave the impression I might've gotten if I'd taken it a little slower (though it did still have it's highlights).
It's always been in my top five games ever made and this remake has only reassured me that it's my favourite soulsborne game. There are so many interesting things going on with the various tendency events, more archaic multiplayer and NPC interactions.
While a lot of the changes made in future entries were done for convenience, doing so has taken away elements of mystery and discovery that this game thrives on.
Remake or not, it's easily the best game released this year. I'm so glad it's come out at the start of this new gen and I'll be playing it on and off throughout the whole generation. There's not many games, if any, I can say the same for.
My biggest problem with this game was the boss fights. Many of them were too easy because of their bad AI. This is my first soulsborne game that I beat 6 different bosses in my first trial. I think Flamelurker and False king were the only good boss fights. However, everything else like the gameplay, music and graphics were amazing so I think it deserves to be in this list.
Started it yesterday, absolutely stunning game. Loving it so far done pharlyx and tower knight so far, did arrive at the armour spider last night but left it for today.
It's a spectacular remake. I started the Soulsborne series with Dark Souls and by the time I backtracked to Demon's Souls to see where it all began, it felt so cumbersome that I quickly bounced off it after the Tower Knight and went back to replay the other games instead, promising myself I'd come back to it one day. I didn't in the end and now I'm glad, because experiencing it this way is so much better. Just about to complete my first playthrough and I've really enjoyed. Maybe not as much as Dark Souls or Bloodborne as the boss fights are showing their age a little bit at times, but it looks absolutely spectacular and I'm already looking forward to my next build/playthrough.
@fR_eeBritney
Actually you can save the game anytime (if needed to quit the game) though I think you still have to replay the part if you die.
Also the game changing feature here vs previous games is the SSD speed. When you die you r back in no time. I advise to check out some good YouTube video to get started and understand the tendencies otherwise you might get on the wrong foot. It's not difficult really compared to Bloodborne.
I refuse to play games where I have tockill the same enemies again and again before a bossfight.
Also I dont have a PS5....
I can't play this game.
I hate dying.
Not so much the dying as the reloading.
It takes forever.
Not on PS5 you say?
I CAN play this game!
In May.
@NEStalgia
I don't understand your point here.. you don't like souls game formula yet you buy them all?? OK...and if you haven't played this one hoe can you judge it for goty, if you were to just go by review scores its probably one of highest rated games in awhile that WAS NOT hyped through the roof.
Just finished it. Brilliant game but extremely challenging! I'm new to the series and I suffered.
Now trying to get the Platinum 😅
100% my game of the year!
Would love to have a go on this but I think it would be too b*****d hard for me.
@Nepp67 Yeah I'd love to see them make a "sequel" of sorts, with Miyazaki's blessing of course. They've really got the core of the souls games (weighty combat and amazing atmosphere) pretty much mastered, so I'd love to see what they could do with their own artists' creations in the same universe.
@Uromastryx Because this isn't a 2020 game. Again I'm not knocking the work blue point put into it, it's all new art etc. But the actual gameplay, level design etc is not new, it's an old game with a new "client" built around it on a way that preserves the original game underneath.
Again, that's not a complaint about the game. I just think it doesn't make sense to award a decade+ old game a goty nomination because it was given a new coat of paint, regardless of how labor intensive that paint coat was. BP went out of their way to make sure NOT to alter the original decade+ old game. Which is great. Just not goty criteria.
By that standard, lots of classic games can just be remade with new art every so often and sweep gotys.
Despite not liking the FromSoft formula, I recognize its quality for what is genre is, even if the genre isn't one that speaks to be. But even if it were a visual remake of a personal favorite, that held true to the original game, I still don't see that as goty criteria for a given year if the underlying game is from a decade ago.
@TheLightSpirit yeah I was the same, sometimes it's good to try something new. I learnt to take my time with the game which made it much easier to appreciate. I've plat'd it now, so it's over.. haha
