Despite the fact that it no longer has a monopoly on the Star Wars license when it comes to video games, EA has reiterated that it will continue making titles set in a galaxy far, far away. Following on from a number of announcements earlier today — including one from Ubisoft stating that it's making an open world Star Wars game — EA took to Twitter in order to confirm its current situation.
The tweet comes off as a bit desperate given the circumstances, but it's important to remember that the publisher still has a number of Star Wars projects in the works. It's likely that we'll be seeing another EA Star Wars title hit store shelves before anything else.
That said, it's hard not to feel as though EA has squandered its exclusive deal over the years. The two Star Wars Battlefront games that it pumped out were decent, but both of them were derailed by some significant issues. On top of that, the more recent Star Wars: Squadrons failed to make any kind of lasting impact. But hey, at least Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is really good.

Yeah bcoz star wars is MONEY......
Honestly I'm ok with this now. Even though the first two or three games under the EA umbrella were pretty aggressively mediocre, they've really started to step up their game as of late. I thoroughly enjoyed Jedi Fallen Order and am having fun with Squadrons. If their next few games are anywhere close to the quality of those titles I'll be satisfied.
I'm glad Disney is at least taking console gaming seriously again after years of nothing but mobile time wasters
Star Wars is a story- A Fairytale in Space. EA has reiterated time and again it would prefer not to make story heavy games.
To me this partnership is like Telltale Making a Usain Bolt game.
I'm not a Star Wars fan, but I see this as good news. EA has certainly squandered its time with the SW license.
Let someone else have a Crack at it. Well, when they're licensing deal is finally over anyway.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If EA have competition in the market, they will have to up their game. This can only be a good thing. More choice for the consumer too 👍
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away....EA thought they could still make financially viable Star Wars games...
Well I quite liked Star Wars Squadrons...
I Do NOT like at all when EA put Star Wars inside The Sims 4 as the Add Ons. 😒
I Do Not like Star Wars at all.
The add on that i will skip completely from The Sims 4.
EA are the worst! Fallen Order was great but I feel like that was in spite of EA rather than because of them. They are everything that is wrong with the gaming world, I hope they change their ways soon!
I'd love Respawn to make another Star Wars Jedi game. Fallen Order is brilliant. Battlefront II's single player is absolute crap, but I have played various multiplayer modes with a friend a few times and had fun.
I really enjoyed my time with both Battlefront games in particular 2, still my most played PS4 title.
Finished Jedi Fallen Order a few weeks back and I had a good time with it, a sequel has massive potential.
Still, it's good if other developers get their own slice of cake especially if their games are different in style and content. Variety is good after all and the Star Wars universe (or should that be galaxy 😉) is large enough for others to play in.
“ the more recent Star Wars: Squadrons failed to make any kind of lasting impact.”
What? The game is fantastic, especially with VR. It’s honestly my favorite Star Wars game in decades.
Whilst I am no fan of EA, IMO both battlefront games were excellent jump in jump out fun but they did fail miserably with PR and microtransactions which they rolled back but the damage was done and they didn't really recover which is a shame as they are both very good, play well, look awesome and sound amazing!
Jedi Fallen order was excellent and I look forward to the sequel, Squadrons I have but haven't booted it up yet as I can't stop playing my PS5 and I want to play it in VR which is now what my Pro is for. So EA have been a PR disaster but the games really are good and shouldn't be ignored if you are a SW fan.
The only good one from ea is jedi fallen order, ubisoft will be a better publisher for star wars I think.
Considering Lego Star Wars and Vader immortal, EA never had a exclusive deal.
They did good in my book with fallen order and squadrons.
I must admit, I have pre-ordered LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 5.
Sue me.
As long as Respawn keeps developing them I'm cool with this.
"This tweet comes off a bit desperate" lol indeed it does.
I'm fine with ending monopolies.
And I won't buy them.
Would of been nice to see visceral’s Star Wars game
funny same time as disney is going down the loo lol. I bet we will soon have a bundle of sw games green lighted
+
I'd love The Old Republic MMO to come to consoles.
just more offline single player games thank you.
BD-1 is the best!. Loved Jedi Fallen order and also SW Squadrons (in VR) was good.
Make more like that and you will keep the base happy.
Last 3 Assassin Creed have shown Ubi can make a good narrative driven open word games if they try. So excited about the news.
If you include the games that have been scrapped, it’s been a pretty lousy tenure for EA. They held onto it and have done nothing really special with it, albeit some decent games came out of it.
I would really enjoy seeing all Star wars games by EA bomb while quality games from other publishers sell like crazy. But for now I'm just curious to see what Ubisoft makes of Rainbow 66: Jedi's Creed
Bit harsh on Squadrons. I thought it was fantastic. Continued DLC support would really have help keep up the momentum.
Edit: played on PS VR
First 5 years were mostly duds but EA have done some really good Star Wars games of late
Hoping for sequels to at least Fallen Order
@hypnotoad Same here! Can't wait to play Lego Star Wars with my kids.
@MrGawain nailed it
@Steel76 Jedi Fallen Order 2 and then EA's license can expire.
