Update: Google has told Games Radar that VGC’s report on cancelled Stadia projects, including a title by Hideo Kojima, is “inaccurate and reported hearsay as fact”. It added that it “[doesn't] have anything, nor has announced anything, with Kojima or Yu Suzuki”.
Original Story: Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima said last summer that he’d recently had a “major” project cancelled, and that he was “pretty p*ssed” about it “but that’s the games industry for you”. There’s a good chance that this title was scheduled to release on Stadia, as a VGC report reveals that Google was talking to the Metal Gear Solid man to create an “episodic horror game” for its cloud streaming platform.
Those of you who follow gaming news closely will know that the tech juggernaut shuttered all of its internal development studios recently, but according to sources speaking with the aforementioned publication, Kojima’s project never really got off the ground. In an interview with the BBC in 2019, the former Konami man revealed that he wanted to create a game in the cloud, so the fact that discussions were taking place is hardly surprising.
Kojima Productions, unsurprisingly, hasn’t commented on the report – it’ll be interesting to see whether it partners with an alternative cloud gaming provider to realise its ambition, or if this project is on ice. VGC continues that Google backed out of a project with Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki as well, while it also cancelled a Journey to the Savage Planet sequel and a brand new multiplayer action game from ex-Assassin’s Creed personnel.

His next game is with xbox
Gotta give it to Sony, their projects get rarely cancelled, even Last Guardian got released in the end.
@Amppari Any sources on that or is it your gut instinct. Cant see it personally i just hope its better than his his last game and he cuts out the artsy rubbish. Have a feeling his next game will be episodic kind of like until dawn in nature or a AA project.
@Amppari @Max2574 I actually wouldn't be surprised if Xbox successfully negotiated with Kojima to purchase the studio. They've said many times that they want a bigger presence in Japan, and buying well-known independent studios seems to be a trend for them recently (Ninja Theory, Compulsion, Obsidian, Double Fine, etc.).
Good thing that didn't happen.
@Max2574 There was recently some video with Phil Spencer where you could see a Ludens statue in his office behind him. People are taking that to be some kind of hint that either Death Stranding is coming to Xbox (obviously not cause owns the IP) or his next game will be with Microsoft. It's a massive reach considering the statue could easily just be a gift since Spencer and Kojima are friends.
Maybe Kojima will be doing something with Xbox next, but as far as I know there's no actual rumour of anything, just reaching over a background detail.
I hope kojima make that horror game for ps5 now
I'd be upset too if you're starting to work on a game and then the publisher just goes "mmmmm nah we changed our mind".
"Ernest Hemingway once made a bet..."
PT Deja Vu.. really hope we get a new game out of him someday.
Stupid Google with their stupid Stadia...
Would've compelled me to buy a Stadia instantly (if it was available in Australia 🤡) Those other games mentioned at the end of the article sound enthralling too. How come at launch we never saw anything like that? One single indie exclusive that screamed 7/10 since reveal. Baffling.
@RBMango Can’t see it Kojima loves a big budget for his games and Xbox don't really do that. But hey money talks so we shall see.
@Orpheus79V Yh I seen that its a very far reach indeed also in the background was stuff from Ubisoft and Nintendo as well. I can see Xbox buying this episodic thing maybe but studio acquisition unlikely. Xbox in Japan is dead so would be a bad move for Kojima and after Death stranding imo was poor he needs to bounce bk in a big way.
@Orpheus79V Agreed
@wiiware I think he has got a massive ego now wich showed in death Staranding alot of wasted money on him.
@Octane shame we didnt get AGENT.
@Octane they just cancel the studio afterwards
@carlos82 #cancelknack
@Max2574 I think Xbox are more than willing to assign big budgets to games these days. Just as an example, they made a new studio to make the new AAAA (ugh...) Perfect Dark game.
@RBMango You mean the one that we seen a cgi trailer lol. Until I see it I won't believe it but hopefully as Sony and Nintendo need the competition. And wat is AAAA LOL pure buzzwords for the gullible they need to concentrate on AAA before trying to add another A lol. I wouldn't call a remake AAAA would you in that case Demon Souls is a AAAA lol.
@Max2574 I like death stranding, it's nice to have AAA games that's not only about shooting people. I think the game is perfect for ps5 and it's dualsense, I hope there's ps5 patch 😃
Also this video should explain about this new AAAA games 😁: https://youtu.be/TD84oMyeWXs
@wiiware There is no such thing as AAAA game lol. From what I have seen about Perfect Dark is its a remake in very early development. AAA yh but AAAA no lol.
Death stranding wasn't for me I found it boring. But glad you liked it mate.
@Grimwood I agree on quality but I think art has definitely now gone out of the window with the recent Japan Studio announcement.
@Max2574 Death stranding is not for everyone but I'm glad the game is made, it's nice to have variety for (console) exclusive. The AAAA video is a joke of course but it's a good one
@wiiware Yh I know mate checked out the vid lol. And yh it was something different just not for me but many millions do like it.
@Max2574 Oh believe me, I'm not sincerely saying it will be a AAAA game. I just think the idiotic labeling of something like that is more of a dumb PR buzzword to signify they might be spending more money on their gaming division than in the past.
And, to be fair to Demon's Souls, that's far more worthy of a AAAA labeling in my eyes than anything Xbox has done in over a decade.
sorry, hideo. should have known better than to get into bed with google. you are wiser than that . might have better luck with luna? or how about we focus on proper games and not an episodic gimmick exclusive to the cloud?
So Kojima to Microsoft is confirmed then?
would of been a total disaster if stadia got this , no retail disc offline copy . not everyone has internet or a fast connection , some have capped connections to , game streaming is a if you want a clutter free lifestyle and youve a good connection , ive a game library on bookshelves i can install a game from disc and play it , streaming isnt for me and a lot of people.
@RBMango after the way Sony backed him during the Konami fiasco, I very much doubt he will go to be part of Xbox studios
@RBMango there were also rumours of perfect dark being epesodic which would make sense since they are selling game pass.... i don't see them doing many AAA games under gamepass it wouldn't make economical sense
Yeah...I don't know if I buy it. Kojima has much too deep a relationship with Sony to go anywhere else. Sony treat Kojima like a God, and they'll give him plenty of funding with zero oversight, he can literally do whatever he wants, why would he ever want to work for/with anyone else? If he was working with Google, I would have to assume having a "big" project cancelled would only make him more hesitant to work with anyone aside from Sony.
@Octane Hope you're right. My waiting for Deep Down depends upon it.
@JAMes-BroWWWn That was a Capcom game.
@Octane Wasn't it a Playstation exclusive though? Doesn't Sony usually sent internal studios such as XDev and San Mateo to those studios to assist them (collaborations) ?
Because The Last Guardian wasn't an intern studio only either.
It was a collaboration with GenDesign.
Why did the game need to be in the "cloud"? Outside of the money I don't know why any well known game maker would get in bed with a new platform, even if it's Google.
If true, this this shows the incompetence of Google and their team.
@Max2574 Yeah it only sold over 4 million copies!! A waste of money huh??
It's like google wants stadia to fail
The universe REALLY doesn't seem to want Kojima to make a Horror game, every time he attempts to, disaster strikes.
@Max2574 - Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding; the Perfect Dark game The Initiative is working on, is a reboot I think, just based on information I know of, it does sound like a reboot more than a remake.
I agree with you regarding the AAAA stuff, it's buzzwords and nothing else, MS have a hard enough time making good AA & AAA games, now they think they're capable of making a non-existent AAAA game?
@Culjoseth Wich is a letdown considering its Kojima. He would of been thinking 10mil plus.
@Max2574 Way to backpedal quickly!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I guarantee you Kojima's next game is going to be an xbox exclusive. Considering Kojima wants his next game to be a cloud game and Microsoft is all in with the cloud, I think it's a done deal. Combine that with the fact that ludens was in the background of Phil Spencer's video, my gut says that's the truth. But it doesn't really bother me because I don't care about a cloud game and secondly compettition brings out the best of Sony. Prepare my fellow playstation people.
@Octane Spoiler alert: then they killed the studio.
For those of you reading bucketloads into this, let’s all remember the time we melted down about dissecting a tweet and a photo into what would OBVIOUSLY be a new Silent Hill game and it turned out to be just a new skin in some existing 4v1 battle thing instead. 😕
Soooo still in development or never existed in the first place?
My money's on the latter tbh
"it's not canceled because we never anounced it, so we consider it never started, so there lies the inaccuracy... We did drop negotiations with him, not that's not canceling, that's just we being mean to the dude after his holes were up high."
@Voltan
Original 'report':
Google turned down proposals for Hideo Kojima (Death Stranding) and Yu Suzuki (Outrun) to create exclusive games for Stadia, the sources said.
Update:
Asked specifically about the Kojima games pitch, a spokesperson told VGC: “We talk to partners all the time in situations that don’t result in a project or even a proposal. This is very common. Speculating that two parties that speak regularly in this industry leads to proposals or otherwise, is inaccurate.”
Project never existed was just talk as said in the original VGC article.
The report about 'cancelled' was just misreporting smoke.
@Exlee300p Nintendo Switch was behind Phil in that recent Video. Does that mean GamePass is launching soon on Switch? I want to hear your instinct.
@JJ2 that makes sense, thanks
@Dr_ENT Well Mr. Smarty pants I can almost guarantee by the time the Ps6 rolls around, that abso-friggin-lutely Gamepass will not only be on switch, but playstation as well. They are trying to be the Netflix of gaming with a subscription based model. And as Phil has said multiple times, they are not trying to prevent anybody from playing their games. They didn't spend nearly 8 billion dollars on one company to hoard it. They are a business who are betting on the cloud/subscription model big time. They will slowly roll this out to get their fans used to it, so as not to create bad press and an exodus of loyalist xbox users. As a person who likes the playstation brand, who likes physical media (though not exclusively,) who likes hardware, and exclusives, the day Sony does games day and date new releases on either pc or xbox systems I will be done with them. It dilutes what makes each brand special. Fulltime retrogaming for me if this occurs. I wish Sony would try to emulate Nintendo rather than Microsoft. Nintendo has proven you don't need to put your games on pc nor do a Netflix style subscription service nor make games off the cloud. All you need to do is make consistently awesome games and hardware that make your ecosystem such a special place to game. Nintendo is actually a bigger company than Sony believe it or not. I really cont stand Jim Ryan he is making some decisions that are not good imo. I miss Shuhei Yoshida in that role. It's also very telling Sony moved their worldwide headquarters to California, woke central, just as droves of businesses are leaving as the state is so mismanaged and overtaxed. Good instinct Sony. I believe the head of Playstation should be a japanese person. Putting a lot of their games on pc and forgetting about japan is not without it's repercussions.
If he's so keen to make a horror game, why did he propose death stranding to Sony instead when he supposedly had the chance?
Why didn't the relationship with Sony last anyway? Its all very confusing.
Well that's interesting (regarding the update). This leaves open the possibility that Kojima Is still working with Sony.
Stadia? that thing is still going on? lol pass
