Hogwarts Legacy's latest update added (amongst other things) a new accessibility option called Arachnophobia Mode, which changes the game's many spider enemies from nightmarish, multi-limbed monstrosities into cuter, more aesthetically pleasing critters, as YouTuber WizardPhD demonstrates (above).
Officially, Arachnophobia Mode makes the following modifications to the game:
- Changes all enemy spider appearances
- Reduces and removes spider skitters and screeches
- Removes small spider ground effect spawners
- Makes static spider corpses in the world invisible
- Collision is still active to prevent players from getting stuck when toggling this setting
- Note that spider images in the Field Guide remain unchanged
Considering how many people are horrified by the thought of spiders and the awful realism of Howarts Legacy's depiction of them, we imagine Arachnophobia Mode will see a fair bit of play. We like to imagine a group of artists in an office, somewhere deep in the bowels of Avalanche Software, who were devastated by this development and what was done to their abominable creations.
What do you think of Arachnophobia Mode, do you hope other developers follow suit? What games have the most horrific implementations of spiders in your reckoning? Scuttle on down to the comments section below.

I wish I had this when I played it. Why on earth they picked such a creature for so many enemies is beyond me.
Unless it's in the books/films as I've never read/seen them.
That’s cute!
Does anyone know if they ever fixed the bugged collectibles? I’m still locked out of the platinum because of two separate collective bugs, or was last I checked. I haven’t seen any updates mentioning it so I figured I’d ask.
@Khayl "Nothing on roller skates has ever been scary"
You've clearly never been made to watch Xanadu.
This is honestly pretty funny and a nice option for those people who are really afraid of spiders. I'm not too afraid of them compared to cockroaches. I hope more games do this in the future. I do know that Jedi: Survivor also has an arachnophobia mode but I didn't really see any spiders in that game.
@Anke There's a major sequence of events in, I want to say the second book/film (?) Involving swarms of spiders, a cave in the woods, and a massive spider queen that absolutely wasn't just copied from shelob in LotR.
Roller skates are also canon from one of the teachers teaching the class to use a spell that turns their fears into funny things and Harry summons a large spider that ends up on roller skates.

Damn you clearly weren't traumatised as a kid watching 'Return to Oz' with the Wheelers!
@NEStalgia I'll pass on the films then but that last point made me chuckle, so they actually are canon roller skates Brilliant!
I will turn this on immediately
@TeapotBuddha First thing that came to mind 😂
But what if I'm scared of witch and wizard?
Im all for this option as the game must have been unplayable for those with the condition but they look more frightful to me than before 🤣
Great news, I can now try this, I can't touch Far Point in VR which is supposed to be a decent game because it has alien like spiders which jump at you - no thanks I think I would be the first person to die in the real world from a VR experience 😂
@Recover20 Same here dude, those things we horrible rolling around on all fours 😨
Great change / addition.
Just goes to show how much these devs/publishers care and listen.
Kids will love that update.
Better if people just get over their fear like I did. Hiding from your phobia isn't the way to go.
If you need something like this in a videogame, you should stay far far far away from Australia - take my word for it!
have a huge fear of spiders or any bugs with stick legs and creepy body so a setting like this would be welcome for me
I have a fear of snakes so could they make a mode where Slytherin is removed from the game please?
@Breekhead Snakes? Snakes???? SNAAAAAKES!!
@wiiware "But what if I'm scared of witch and wizard?"
You burn them of course!
@NEStalgia But I want cuddly witch and wizard too..
Excellent news! And great business sense, too. I wasn't going to buy Jedi Survivor until I heard they'd introduced this.
@Perturbator
Or the southern US where I live.
Like you guys down under we have scary things all over the place.
Can’t count the number of times I’ve walked on the porch, looked ten feet in the distance, and saw a Timber Rattlesnake just chilling near a tree.
And those damn Brown Recluses and Black Widow spiders.
@Breekhead
Snake is good eating though.
@OrtadragoonX I'm not from Australia but I lived there a few years, as well as in the Southern US actually!
The Huntsman spiders in my room were scary enough, but me and some friends discovered some Redbacks under the folding chairs we were sitting in by the pool! Did not sit in those again.
@Perturbator As a Queenslander, I wish I had an Arachnophobia Mode for my everyday life 😅
@Khayl Fair Dinkum!
@NEStalgia Correction, Ron Weasley was the one afraid of spiders and he gave his fear the roller skates.
@KidRyan haha I've lost my trivia for the day! It's been a while, the details are all a blur 😂
@NEStalgia I recently rewatched the films ahead of the game, so I've got an advantage haha.
@NEStalgia
Nothing is scarier than a movie that killed the careers of every single actor that was in it
@KaijuKaiser Why is a option to make some people cope with something like this a issue it's a extra which doesn't affect anyone else.
And it's better to let therapist do these things in a controlled environment then a game without the proper guidance.
@JohntheRaptor It's really something stupid to say just get over your phobia you don't know what caused or why it triggers some people just totally ignorant.
@wiiware Good news! I'm a practicing witch and I can tell you from experience most witches are super cuddly and genuinely wonderful people.
@PegasusActual93 Haaah, there's some sad truth there!
Anything that has an Arachnophobia mode is a plus for me. I respect arachnids but they freak me out. I wish games would stop making them look worse and several times larger than they actually are.
