The Last of Us Part II Remastered is out today, 19th January, and it looks like plenty of PS5 players want to get hurt all over again and relive Naughty Dog's tragic masterpiece. But apparently, enough veterans are getting confused by the whole $10 upgrade path thing that Sony, as a gesture of goodwill, is issuing refunds to those who got too caught up and purchased the game again at full price.
As reported by MrPyo1 on Twitter, Sony is pre-emptively refunding players who purchased the full-price version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and own the PS4 version of The Last of Us: Part II on the same PSN profile. This is probably just Sony trying to pre-empt the inevitable headache it must deal with whenever an upgrade situation arises rather than an overtly benevolent act. The company's customer support would likely be inundated with refund requests anyway, so perhaps automating the entire ordeal is less hassle.
Did you find yourself caught up in The Last of Us Part II Remastered fever, and double-dipping without thinking? Have you found a lovely refund from the notoriously refund-shy Sony? Let us know in the comments section below.

Suckers. I would have kept the money. Do the bare minimum of research before spending.
@Triumph741
"Do the bare minimum of research before spending." I recommend doing more than the bare minimum, but the bare minimum research is a lot more than many do. It's sad, really, because voting responsibly with one's wallet is very important.
Can Sony please refund me for "accidentally" buying a PS5, a Sony TV, a Walkman, an Xperia, multiple Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures Blu-Rays, a Michael Jackson album, Knack, God of War, the Spider-Verse Whopper...
@Triumph741 When it was up for pre-order the game page gave no indication you would get a discount on launch. Sony is at fault here for not making it clear on the store page not the costumer who might not have even been aware a discount was a thing.
How peoples dont know this🤔.word up son
So, the upgrade is 10? I thought it was free. WTF
Those of us who check gaming news sites like this near daily are actually the minority when it comes to people who purchase games. The majority actually are not very well informed and tend to buy things based on word of mouth, so if a friend tells them that they remastered TLOU2 then people are just going to shrug their shoulders and purchase it without fully knowing what they should be paying or what they're even getting.
@durxll123 They never once said it was free.
@durxll123 @DennisReynolds
Aye and $10 is still a steal for it. Tomorrow, I shall buy the upgrade. It's still January 18th for us yankees.

I actually can’t recall how I played this. Not the first time it’s happened though, I couldn’t recall how I watched my kid play FF7R, apparently we got that one with PS+. The senility is real.
Don’t think I need to replay this one though, I’ll just wait for the show.😂
I'm always stupefied as to how some of these people actually manage to tie their own shoelaces. If you follow the onscreen prompts when purchasing these upgrades then you should not have any issues and yes they are very clear and easy to follow.@HotGoomba you were doing so well until you mentioned the MJ album..please tell me it was either off the wall or at least thriller for a 1 point gain in redemption 🤣
These people have the vote!
Always care for and protect the brainless
@durxll123 The upgrade is free if you pay 10$ for it.
@DennisReynolds I agree. I literally tried to pre-order the upgrade path yesterday and own the ps4 version digitally and it simply did not even exist until after launch. In the end I just decided to wait, as I knew it would eventually exist, but there's more to it than players being "confused".
Yep, I knew some people would fall for this. Ma dudes, we are in a bubble here, most gamers don't watch news sites about video games. I reported this before that it states nowhere on the store page that there will be a discount if you own the PS4 edition.
@Czar_Khastik 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂like it👍🏻
Pretty naughty from Sony, that. I went to check it out as a pre order upgrade and the only option was the full price game. It was such an obvious, cynical move to not be transparent about it.
Free speech for the dumb!
Is the upgrade path available indefinitely, or is it time-limited? I have the PS4 version and will upgrade at some point, but don’t plan on replaying it any time soon and don’t want it taking a huge chunk of PS5 SSD space.
I’m glad Sony is refunding it, the fault does lie squarely with them if it wasn’t made clear. Also, people, please stop taking the side of the corps over the people, it’s like you’ve never played any Deus Ex game or watched RoboCop.
@CharlieChooChoo I was the same, it showed as unavailable to purchase for me until midnight last night when the £10 upgrade became available.
Sony 'hiding' the upgrade path option is very sneaky.
Things like this just shouldn't be possible at a system level. If you have the game already, the only option to buy should be the upgrade.
How did they manage to buy it if they already owned it the game said it was unavailable for me to purchase because i already owned the ps4 version.
I had a look the other day and it said come back on the 19th and put the disc in and you can have it for a tenner. Which is exactly what happened.
@CharlieChooChoo Why were people who owned the game on PS4 already even allowed to buy the full PS5 version? That's on Sony.
And the inverted commas I used around hiding make it clear that I wasn't suggesting they were making a concerted effort to hide it.
It wouldn't let me buy it until today for 10 quid, because it said I already owned another version ,so I don't know how this happened in the first place ,and did they not notice the price ,people are just stupid.
@__jamiie wasn't really hidden though.
Why didn’t they just make it so that preordering the PS5 version cost $10 if you had the PS4 version? Seems like an easier way to deal with this situation.
@Mephisto2869 That's exactly what those inverted commas mean.
@CharlieChooChoo Sony didn't need to give an option for people to make that mistake. They could have very easily avoided this situation. Then this article wouldn't have existed and I wouldn't have had this conversation.
I tried to obtain the upgrade yesterday, and yet could not see it. All that I was able to do was buy the game again (which I did not do as I knew that was incorrect). It's not like they have made it clear on the Store front...
Man, nothing pisses me off more then "a gesture of goodwill" as though this is a kindness performed by the company and not something that should happen as a matter of course because it's obviously the right thing to do.
And this should show Sony they need to put the £10 upgrade option up much sooner.
@Fiendish-Beaver it was always going to be the case that the upgrade path wouldn't show until today.
@DennisReynolds well spotted. You truly are a golden god
This remaster is a blatant cash grab. Im all for remastering games but one as recent as TLOU 2 is a blatant cash grab and Im sick of playing the same games again and again. I think the time would have been better spent on a new game and a new game coming soon from Naughty Dog would be a lot more welcome than a remaster.
@Wigclyne I have good news for you: nobody is forcing you to play TLOU2 Remastered.
That's cool, @MattBoothDev. Thank you. I didn't know that particular detail, and so I can understand how others may not have known that either...
@AgentGuapo Still entitled to my opinion.
I learned my lesson with these upgrades the hard way with Death Stranding DC. I pre-ordered it at full price before I knew there was going to be a $10 upgrade. Never got my money back on that one, but oh well.
@Wigclyne Sounds like a you problem. If you don't want the remaster then don't buy it its really that simple. I don't want the Like a Dragon game so guess what i'm not buying it pretty amazing concept right?
Glad to see Sony refunding people on this instead of pointing and going "lol losers my money now"
@Fiendish-Beaver yeah, they did a poor job of communicating it with the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves upgrade path a couple of years ago too. You'd think they'd learn?!
@Wigclyne it's a little more than that.
I agree it's a cash in. But they're going to be publishing it on PC later in the year, if past releases are anything to go by. That's the real reason this is being done, most likely. They do the work on PS5 first and then, as part of their build pipeline, get a PC release as well.
As far as grabs go, though, the TLOU P1 "remaster" was much worse. It was £60 with no upgrade path from the PS4 remaster (which was worth the money) and didn't actually do much remastering. At least this is £10 if you own it already and £40 (physical)/£45 (digital).
@NinjaNicky nope Sony said it's for all versions, physical too.
Still baffles me why so many people are pre ordering on a digital game.
Its not like pre ordering back in the day to make sure you actually got a copy before they sold out.
The game ain't going anywhere and its not going to sell out and the pre load happens the same time for everyone
@Czar_Khastik not free if your paying 10 dollars for it🤣😂
@MattBoothDev the 1st game couldn't do the 10 dollar upgrade as it was a remake not a remaster
@Rocky1972 I mean, they called it a remake. The reality is another thing
@DennisReynolds I think that @Wigclyne is entitled to say that they'd prefer to see ND making something new rather than rehashing games that aren't even that old.
It's not just people planning on buying the game that are allowed to comment you know.
@__jamiie ND are making something new though. People do understand right that the remaster didn't take all of ND to make? It was a small side project for a small side team. The remaster existing or not is not going to speed up ND's new game.
It wasn't exactly difficult to upgrade. I put the ps4 disc in and as usual the upgrade price was shown on the right hand side of the screen. I don't imagine the digital upgrade is any more difficult. If you mess up this simple process you deserve to lose your money.
Nope.. I have all the originals on discs.
Once I saw digital foundry's review of the game being better only for the VRR, I have decided to not play the exact same game again with actually worse pop up in places..
@FuzzieGinge88 the number of times in the last few weeks I've seen people asking how they upgrade well before the release date.. it was bound to happen, lol
The Milking Of Us Part 1 of 1 of 2 of 2
This isn't gesture of goodwill, it's simply working around a bug. The store shouldn't let anyone who owns the original pay $50 for the remaster.
Also, what about people who own a physical copy of the PS4 version? Out of luck?
They probably doing this coz they don't wanna get sued. I don't see this as anything good anyway. Upgrades are usually free on PC. And xbox has that play anywhere thing.
Why not offer the the £10 upgrade straight away? Why wait till the 19th! There's a word applicable here called entrapment, never trusted Sony, never have, never will. It's the way all conglomerates work.
If Sony are obligated BY LAW to make it clear then they messed up. If not then it’s on you melts to make sure you know wtf you’re doing lol
@nomither6 have you heard of a system called Nintendo with a character called Mario? ‘The way you milk me Phil’, another Jackson reference.. sort of
The PlayStation 5 has been out over 3 years now and every upgrade path has released on launch day. How did it not twig for people when Pre-ordering The Last of Us Part 2 you was buying the game for full price £44.99, it's pretty clear. Obviously these people didn't know about the upgrade path and was willing to buy the game again. This is good customer support to upgrade the digital PS4 game to the PS5 version & refund the rest of the money, because these people wouldn't have been any wiser.
@Bez87 a couple of reasons, I guess. Since you pay upfront, you may not have the money to buy it when it launches. When you pre-order it, it's preinstalled on your console and you can play it right away instead of waiting for hours (depending on one's internet) to play it. A third one could be that you may forget that it's out on that specific date, so when you pre-order it, you get a notification and you can start playing day1. Never pre-ordered a game, but these come to mind.
@MattBoothDev Nobody needs to do anything they can choose to do so.
@Mikey856 You forgot about Zelda they milked that cow so hard he dried out.
I find this bizarre - it seemed very straightforward. Ghost of Tshushima is another matter. I’ve spoken to two member of Sony’s customer support regarding the apparent inability to upgrade the PS4 Director’s Cut version. I was told that they couldn’t help and provided a link to customer support - sent around in circles, still no solution.
Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, Sega
omg nobody issued refunds when Ghost of Tsushima PS5 came out Imho that was a far bigger upgrade mess than TLOU 2
