The sequel to CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 is already in development, known by the codename "Project Orion", and developers with some serious credits have begun to assemble at the company's Boston studio (and a satellite studio in Vancouver). In a press release announcing the passing of another milestone, CDPR crowed about several high-profile additions to the development team.
While noting that "Project Orion is currently in the early stages of development", it introduced some higher-ups responsible for incubating the sequel. Dan Hernberg will serve as executive producer, previously as head of production at Amazon Games and lead product manager at Blizzard Entertainment. Ryan Barnard, formerly a game director at Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft (not to mention gameplay director at Hitman developer IO Interactive), will utilise his skills as design director.
Alan Villani is onboard as engineering director, bringing a wealth of technological know-how from years of working as VP of technology for WB Games, including technical direction on various Mortal Kombat titles. Anna Megill is an award-winning game writer, contributing narrative to games like Control, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Alexander Freed will also contribute on the narrative front, previously working as lead writer at BioWare on legendary titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
While still a good few years away, it seems like the foundations of an exciting Cyberpunk sequel have already begun to take shape. If you're interested in joining the team and have some profound experience, CDPR is still hiring for several senior positions. Take bets on when we get to play this one in the comments section below.

Yeah, they’ve got the talent. Now all CDPR has to do is let the team finish the game before they release it, instead of still patching it over 3 years later. Or at least call it early access, like Larian did with Baldur’s Gate 3. That seemed to work out well for them.
First teaser/announcement video at a late event in 2025 with a release early 2027.
Be about 5 years development so maybe bit short but I would think they’d want a PS6 release rather than wait for a cross-gen so they don’t risk any kind of similar Cyberpunk game issue.
@itsfoz this is quite optimistic)
I doubt we're even getting it this decade. They are going to be working on the new Witcher for about 3-4 more years, i reckon. That's a 2028 release year. And to have C2 one or two years later? Not likely.
@Impossibilium
Yeah, early access would be stupid tho. I'm not touching any Witcher or Cyberpunk early access. Which I did with 2077
They've always had talented people, especially when it comes to it's writing and quest design.
With the use of UE5 and perhaps artist supporting use of ai for the making generic assets, I hope this could release within a foreseeable time window and in good quality.
@Specky I don’t play early access games either. I don’t buy games at launch either, since most might as well be called early access. I’m just saying it would be more honest than what CDPR did with 2077, and people like myself would stay away until it’s done and fully patched.
