Leaked several days ago and now confirmed as part of Sony's latest State of Play broadcast, the playable demo for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is available to download from the PS Store. It weighs in at a whopping 48.6GB, which is huge for a pre-release peek.
The demo itself will take you through Rebirth's prologue, as Cloud joins Sephiroth on an expedition through Nifelheim and its surrounding mountains, before checking in on the local mako reactor. And yes, you do get to play as Sephiroth. Beating the prologue in the demo allows you to skip the same section in the full game.
What's more, the demo will be updated between now and the full launch of Rebirth on the 29th February. Said update will add an explorable area around Junon, allowing you to delve a little deeper into the game's open world and combat mechanics.
Oh, and if you need something to keep you entertained while you wait for the demo to download, you may want to give our new Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth preview a read:
Will you be giving the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth demo a shot, or are you waiting for the full release? Try not to stay up too late in the comments section below.

So does the progress carry over or no?
Mixed feelings. If it's a bit of the start then it feels pointless as well have to do it again on a few weeks. I was hoping for something more complete - as in, chapter 1 complete with an import - but this sounds like little sample followed by a little sample. But then it's a bit much to expect the whole first chapter.
Either way, I'm downloading now 😆. To be honest I'd be happy to just walk around Kalm. It looked amazing in the trailers. Or let me play the card game. We all know The Witcher 3 wouldn't have been half the game it was without Gwent.
@AFCC No, but you can skip the Nibelheim prologue in the full game if you beat it in the demo.
You also get a couple of items for beating the demo.
I'm definitely going to be playing the demo tonight. Probably not the updated version, but that's still a pretty cool thing to do.
@Enuo Same, especially with it being 48 gbs
Almost 50 gig you say? Well I started the download but I may have to pause it later to watch some streaming with the fam. I’m sure I’ll boot it up eventually though.
I am very excited for the game, but I replaying Remake as we speak. I am waiting for the full release of Rebirth. Final Fantasy and PlayStation. What a pair.
Beefy demo but I guess it makes sense since it's the beginning prologue of the game.
Rebirth is going to let us do what speedrunners have been trying to do for years: skip the Kalm flashback.
This is amazing news
Downloading it right now! I was going to hold off on this one as I work through my backlog but if the demo sways me, well, ya know.
@Cloud39472 just play it now , you get items in the full game playing the demo
@Michael2008ish same boat, that QTE moment was abhorrent
@scoobdoo @Michael2008ish
Really guys? Your allowing a QTE stop you from playing what will be an incredible game?! Madness.
You may not like them, but for them to impede your enjoyment that much is pretty bizarre.
I'm guessing Resident Evil 4 was awful for you guys then?
Is it just me or is this game (the demo at least) kinda ugly looking? I mean on a technical level - I'm on performance mode and much of the texture work looks muddy and unfinished, and, again, it might just be me, but the resolution looks to be about 1080p; the overall image is REALLY soft and smudgy.
Hoping this isn't an issue in the full release.
@JB_Whiting I was thinking this too. It looks like the last one and not really upgraded for PS5.
@JB_Whiting dang this is concerning to hear
@ILikeStake @JB_Whiting I haven't fired up the demo yet, but just from the non combat grassland footage alone l was a bit underwhelmed at how grainy and washed out it appeared. I had initially hoped it was just a video quality issue but the more looks we got it appeared that was less likely. A bummer if it's not at all improved from what was essentially a Ps4 title. Square's engine visuals have been growing dated. I also seem to remember that aside from loading times the difference in visuals between the ps4 version of remake and the Ps5 was also very minor.
Is it much better in quality mode?
@KundaliniRising333 just confirming that it hasn’t been updated at all in the 4 years since the last go around. very disappointing graphically..
@KundaliniRising333 Not really, no. The bump in res feels like it’s going from 1080p to 1440p but my complaints with muddy textures still remain. This is feeling like the PS4 remake all over again; yet this is worse because we’re working with a full blown native current gen game, even though technically it’s still the PS4 original as its template. Such a shame because the art design is wonderful.
You’ll seen when you fire it up; felt like I suddenly needed glasses!
@JB_Whiting @scoobdoo Pretty crazy. bummer considering its a current gen native version. Ironic as they mentioned in this most recent showcase regarding the boost provided by the PS5 was being able to load in "high quality assets." However, it sounds like it's the same visual level as PS4, further muddied with low resolution and likely over reliance on post processing and/or likely more garbage FSR level upscaling implementation.
Thanks for the info. May wait for a sale on this and hope Dragons Dogma turns out to be good. I'll still give the Demo a go later today. However, it's a few weeks from release. what we see here in the demo is absolutely going to be what the final product is going to look like.
@KundaliniRising333 Yep, it is absolutely on par with Remake: everything from character model detail and animation to environmental detail; it's a one to one copy. Though I will say the environments themselves are greatly expanded.
I'm a little surprised no one in official previews have put aside their gushing to mention these points.
I'm going to wait, once I start I will not want to stop and the wait will kill me.
Is it really sad I've booked the week off?
Need to review those graphics. They have been downgraded from the first installment, i know it shouldnt be the case as we are speaking of a 3 year old game but thats the way i felt while playing the demo.
The production vaule is higher than FF16. I thoroughly enjoyed FF16 including its action combat. But side quests can be made better, and its world is nothing compared to FF7R.
@BloodyBlact Agreed. It's as if almost they spent so much time focusing on expanding the game's ambition and scope, they forgot the fundamentals of visual fidelity. Based on this demo I think that FF16 is much stronger visually (better animation, higher level of detail on its characters, higher resolution). I'm just bummed out that it looks like this as it's otherwise a fantastic looking game.
@Rosona I agree. That's just wild to me lmao
@JB_Whiting it's just a shame that PS couldn't put aside its gushing for a single paragraph to mention the graphical downgrade and/or parity with its 4-year-old predecessor
Wow you guys weren't kidding. Finally had time to give the demo a go. Beyond the terrible resolution and whatever up scaling they are using making it so blurry, their were more technical issues than I can count. Textures not popping in, low quality assets, some models look completely unfinished, poor lighting and lighting anomalies, and really bad shadow LOD and texture pop in at close proximity. I walked up to vegetation that took seconds to fully load in once standing right next to them.
If this is indicative of the whole game to come at release, which is likely, then I'm waiting for a great deal of patches before picking this one up. So many aspects of this are visually a step down from the previous one, even the UI.
Pretty crazy. This needed more time in the oven, because this is just unpolished and the areas in the demo feel unfinished. It's not breaking any new ground or pushing to the limits of what other games have done. Games with much greater detail scope and subsequent performance even on ps4 to be honest. This being the next installment and looking worse is odd, but it also being a native ps5 title progressing from what was in all reality a Ps4 game is pretty bizarre and shocking to see it so rough.
The gameplay seems like more of the same and all but man, technically this is shaping up to be a mess at launch. What the heck happened here? Why would they show this and why aren't the game journos talking about this?
Hey guys/gals - Does anyone know of a way I can find out (maybe even get alerted) when DEMOs are released? Aside from coming here and reading in the comments "the demo was great" I struggle to find which games have demos and when those demos are released. Thanks!
