In a tragic update to a story we brought you back in September, the coolest companions in the original and upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not join Cloud and company on the battlefield after all. It was first thought that "accompanying characters" Cid and Vincent might lend a hand in an automated fashion as Red XIII did in Remake, but sadly, this will not be the case.
So why did we think these legendary characters would lend a hand in battle in the first place? Director Naoki Hamaguchi seemingly said so to IGN following the reveal of the final release date trailer. IGN asked whether Vincent would be playable in Rebirth, to which he replied: "In terms of whether or not Vincent will be a playable character, he will be more of an accompanying character to the party in terms of Rebirth. So this will be similar to how Red XIII was in Remake."
It's pretty easy to see where the confusion stems from as we read it the same way. Regardless, Hamaguchi set the record straight, again speaking to IGN and confirming that the chain-smoking pilot and slumbering edge lord would not be throwing hands until the next game:
"Both Cid and Vincent are accompanying the party on their journey, and they do help out, but they aren't actually featuring in battle as guest characters. So they're not really going to be involved in your fight."
Were you aware that a distinction existed between "guest" and "accompanying" characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Take consolation in the fact Red XIII, Cait Sith, and Sephiroth will be playable this time around, and begin the long wait for the next game in the comments section below.

I assume they'll make dlcs for those two like yuffie
@Ultrasmiles Yeah that was my guess as well. Which reminds me I still need to play the yuffie dlc
I hope they don't make DLCs tbh. Leave something for the final part. I assume the weapons will be in that part too
I'm okay with that. There's plenty of playable characters already.
If they're there in a narrative context, that's fine.
Theyre saving them for dlc like how we didnt get yuffie in the first game.
@Andy22385 actually we get to fight the weapons in rebirth. Obviously you havent been keeping up with info..
@Nepp67 scarlett is a boss in the yuffie dlc. I assume some bosses were cut from the 2nd game too for dlc reasons.
Oh geez I can't wait got me disc pre-ordered will go along side my ps1 copy
Why couldn't they make Cait Sith an accompanying character!
I think we might get a Vincent intermission a la Yuffie before the final game in 2028
And I am not complaining, this already sounds huge…make the last one just mind boggling, Square!
No big deal. Like others have said, there's already plenty of other playable characters. This is going to be huge.
they'll be playable in the 3rd game , i'm guessing. after playing the demo , this already looks like game of the year to me.
RED XIII!!!!! Can't wait to get to Cosmo Canyon
Cid doesn't need a dlc but what if they remade dirge of cerberus with ffviire gameplay for a vincent dlc??
I'm every so slightly bummed by this, but in the grand scheme of things I reckon I'll be fine with the package we're getting.
Finished the demo and I will be getting this game however was alittle disappointed to be honest. Issues from the first game cropping up and I just don't think in 2024 with the budget this will of had and a £70 price tag that I should be seeing such poor textures and villagers appearing 20 feet in front of me. Gonna wait for a sale 100%
Sadly, the more I see of, the game, the less interested that I am. I was pretty disappointed in how the first chapter went. What I want is a massive party based RPG where I can use all of the characters, and this seems to just be turning into more of an interactive story with action elements to it. Thats not why I used to love FF games for such a long time.
All of ff7s companions are cool.
@Unlucky13 first chapter of rebirth? You do know how kalm goes in the original ff7 right lol? FF games have always been interactive stories. Not sure how this is different.
@NotSoCryptic I'm sorry if I was unclear. I meant the first game in the FF7 remake series.
Either way, the experience that I really want is one more akin to the older games - through FF12 - where you controlled the whole party, switching characters as you desired most of the time, leveling them up, building their skill trees, buying/finding weapons and armor, etc.
@BansheeNorn well no because I don't want the entire game spoiled before I play it 😂😂
@Unlucky13 it's literally how the original ff7 was
@Unlucky13 You still had that in Remake, I haven't touched Rebirth yet, waiting till the 29th so I can binge on it. mostly on a black out. Sadly articles like this exist lol.
Anyway, you still switch between characters on the fly in FF7 Remake and you really had to on hard mode. There just wasn't any way around that if you want to survive a fight. It's ironically the natural evolution of what FF12 and FF13 were trying to accomplish, but couldn't quite stick the landing in either. Way to automated. You're still fussing with skill trees. I assume the weapon growth system is present, which was a lot of fun prioritizing what you needed to build out. Right sword, gloves, staff, gun arm for the job. Not to mention the classic accessories system. It was a very well thought out evolution of what FF7 had done, which made it all the more potent.
I'd go as far as to say that the only thing that really differentiates FF7R from FF7 combat wise is that its faster and requires your micromanagement to be selective, be cloud, because at that moment, its most effective to be cloud. Be Barret because its most effective to be him. Even my little combo genie of death Tifa, she was the driving force in a lot of my fights. I'd say FF7R is way more involved and challenging than the original was because of how Remake better leverages the ideas the original FF7 put forth.
Rebirth as I understand it does allow character switching. I have no idea if that functions like FFX or some variation of that, but something tells me you can switch party members with your PHS just like in the original at the exact same point as the original game. Right after Kalm I think.
They need to figure out the FSR crap that is doing a C- job upscaling from 720p or whatever. Remake runs better on both a PS5 and a 5700XT, which is worse than a PS5.
I'm OK with that balancing 6 characters for battle is enough 👌
A bit of a disappointment for me as they both have the potential for the best fighting styles, especially Vincent with his DMC style. Having played the demo I am sold but can see a certain lack of detail in certain area's. When cloud is injured in the fire why not just cast a healing spell to cure his limping, that would have been cool and shown what Soldier are capable of. It's that kind of attention to detail that sets amazing games apart from good ones something Naughty Dog does so well and sadly this game doesn't (yet).
