For months now, it's been speculated and theorised how the PS5 Pro will really start to justify its power (and price) once GTA 6 lands next year. As the biggest game of the generation releases, people will be looking to experience it in the best possible way. It still sounds like the PS5 Pro will be the console you'll want to make that happen, but the enhanced box may simply be stabilising what's already there rather than pushing it to new heights.
In an interview piece between IGN and Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry, it's discussed what sort of benefits GTA 6 may see on the PS5 Pro. However, when Leadbetter is asked if the new PS5 machine could realistically run the Rockstar title at 60 frames-per-second, he's very to the point: "No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!). The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps. This isn't a GPU problem, it's a CPU problem."
Assuming some PS5 Pro-specific improvements are in the works for GTA 6, it sounds like they'll mostly be focused on the graphics. "What you will get will be higher quality visuals, but likely still running at similar frame rates [to the base console], Leadbetter continues. "If GTA 6 can't sustain a locked 30fps (GTA 4 and GTA 5 couldn't on PS3 and Xbox 360), PS5 Pro can run the CPU with a 10 per cent bump to clock speeds — so you may get more stable performance."
Leadbetter throws in the caveat that "all bets are off if Rockstar is targeting 60fps on the standard PS5", but this doesn't seem to be the case. As such, GTA 6 will be one of the PS5 Pro Compatible Games, but you might want to tone down your expectations a little.

I care more about whether GTA 6 will be fun to play.
The reason people are still playing GTA Online after all these years is because its "fun" not because it has the best graphics.
Gonna be like with the PS4 Pro, some games gets better performance on the release of the upgraded console, and then it's back to 30fps again, when developers goes all in on the graphics instead.
But maybe they can include a 40fps mode. Something I wish more developers did, when a game can't lock to 60.
I don't understand why they did the same mistake, as with the PS4 Pro, and didn't use a more powerful CPU, to avoid bottlenecks like this. But then they would probably have added another $100-200 to the price...
It will only run at 60fps if they designed the game from the ground up to run at 60fps, which they probably didnt. I'm guessing its a 30fps game
I'm expecting gta6 on ps5 to be a similar scenario to gta5 on ps3 - this will be the first release of many re-releases on subsequent consoles, each one improving with more power
lol. They call him ‘007’
0 new games
0 new features
7 00£ without a stand or disc drive.
Licenced to shill.
That is only for native 4K, no current console can run native 4K@60, and honestly nor they should given the price.
But what if GTA is targeting upscaled 4K from a 1440p resolution? Its doable to get upscaled 4K60 if your input is a stable 1440p@60, at least on DLSS.
Man I wish 60fps was standard like on the Dreamcast era, I really cannot stand 30fps and always turn it off. GTA6 is going to be a beast though when it lands
How many GTA enthusiasts do play on a 4k display ? I'm pretty sure a base ps5 will be enough for most of them in the first years after release.
I’m hoping it runs at 60fps but if they can get it to a solid 40fps I would be happy
@CielloArc again it all depends on PSSR. I really wish we got some more third party updates in the video. If PSSR can upscale to XESS levels it could be big.
Why bother developing a game that can’t run to its fullest potential on current consoles? At least Cyberpunk had the excuse of launching on PC as its primary format.
Wouldn’t it be better to develop something that will be a smooth experience right now rather than something that will only achieve full potential on a console half a decade away.
I’ll definitely be holding off preordering this.
I would love a 60fps GTA6 as a rule I don’t play any game that runs at 30fps now.
I know crazy but there you go.
I think the PS5 Pro could do it, if it was a Sony in house developed game engine and Sonys top developers.
But it isn’t so I’m not too hopeful now.
I would rather Sony had given us just 1tb PS5 Pro and spent the hundred pound on a better CPU.
Then if we wanted more memory we could have expanded that ourselves.
Won't be surprised, 4K60 for games like GTA6 would demand a lot more. IGN tagged this PS5 Pro as "A New, Expensive Way To Play PS4 Games". 😁
@breakneck They didn't think that acronym through!
I get it's gonna be big but I don't quite get the obsession with GTA 6. Especially when Rockstar have hardly said or shown much yet
You just have to wait and see what happens
People should be more concerned with how Rockstar titles like GTA IV and Max Payne 3 run on PS5...
Not to mention how RDR2 looks
GTA 6 will probably get a 60 fps mode with FSR3 frame generation, the same 60 fps mode as Black Myth: Wukong has. And most players will NOT notice.
Well, I remember GTA V needed top line GPUs BUT due to ***** optimization on PC. So, it it aslo importnat the quality of a game. Any developer can make so heavy game that no hardware can handle it. The trick here is optimization. And not only on consoles.
And yes, we all remember Cyberpunk.
@Max_the_German Exactly. Not sure why everybody is so focused on native 4k when with new techs like PSSR you cant see the difference. Only Digital foundry can but I do not pause and zoom like crazy. I play. I thinks PS5 pro will handle it nice.
@roe me too. So many great games comming, and everybody is talking about a game which the developer is saying nothing ...
It will be interesting to see if all the “I can’t tolerate 30 fps and refuse to buy a game that is limited to 30 fps” people will show up for GTA6. I’m sure they will. Just like they made an exception for Tears of the Kingdom and Starfield and the other big games that launched at 30 fps. The way people speak in such absolutes drives me crazy — “I’ll never play a game at 30 fps…. Well, except for this one… oh and that one… well, maybe this other one too….”
The PS5 showcase was showing TLOU2. A PS4 game. Of course it can't run the one and only true next gen game on 60fps. This is the biggest scam I've ever seen from Sony
FRAMESSSSSSSSS
FRRRRAAAAAMEEEEEESSSSS
FRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMEEEESSSSSSSS
@CielloArc As Rich Leadbetter explained in this article, it's mostly about CPU. Lowering resolution doesn't have a big effect on CPU. Similarly PSSR will mostly help when GPU is the bottleneck. While more powerful GPU and PSSR will improve the graphics and image quality, they will not necessarily help with framerate.
But this is all speculation at this point. We have no idea how demanding the game is, and how much physics and other simulation stuff it has.
Hasn't this game been delayed again?
It makes sense - certain aspects really don't scale with 'graphics'. Turning down the resolution has no impact on the amount of AI on screen for example so it still has the same cost to process the AI.
Often we saw 'Performance' modes on the PS4 Pro that were 'unlocked' from 30fps and may hit '60' in certain situations, but more often than not, would often drop below 50, even below 40 in most intense moments when you need high frame rates the most.
With a 10% boost to CPU, if a game is CPU limited to 55fps at worst, it could be enough to get a Consistent' 60fps (or around 27.5 fps for a locked 30fps). Anything below and you'll likely get some dropped frames - but also, if they keep their VRR range to 48fps+, some games (those that drop to 44fps for example) would likely sit in that VRR window better too...
Consoles have always been 30fps if the game is 'pushing' gaming technology forward. Yes you could have 60fps games that 'look' like last gen games with the same 'visual' detail, style and methods but that's why we've had 60fps games this gen.
Its the 'next' gen games that are 30fps on release and, if they can reduce the Visual Quality (often 1080p or lower with reduced quality Shadows etc) enough, then you may get an 'unlocked' 60fps mode that will often drop below the 60fps target. Most of the reason these games don't hit 60fps, its the CPU that's bottlenecking. Reducing the res to 540p or even 480p wouldn't see any frame rate gains because its a CPU limitation...
@Yagami Yeah, I agree. Depending on the scope and graphical quality of the game, along with a lot of other gameplay factors, 30 fps is often reasonable. Sure, we’d all prefer to have 120 fps at 4K, but we have to be realistic. Nevertheless it’s amazing how many people threaten to boycott a game because it’s limited to 30 fps.
@Max_the_German FSR3 frame generation is only slightly better than the motion smoothing on televisions. Adds latency and has some obvious visual artefacts. In my opinion it should never be used to reach 60fps.
But yes, most people will not notice. They may feel like something is a bit off, and may notice some ghosting, but that's about it.
R* have never released a new game with 60fps and i doubt they will start now.
I'd rather play GTA 6 at 30fps with the deeply complex CPU systems that they imbed in such as npcs having schedules or remembering your actions than shallow npcs at 60fps. RDR2 is innovate in it's npc design and pure attention to detail.
@Steel76 “ I don't understand why they did the same mistake, as with the PS4 Pro, and didn't use a more powerful CPU, to avoid bottlenecks like this.”
Cause console games are usually hardcoded for the CPU. Just slapping in a more powerful CPU could break compatibility which would either require developers going back in and spending a lot more time, money, and energy coding their game for the new CPU… or Sony will have make new software for Pro to emulate the CPU of the older PS5.
@HeeHo R* target the best visuals possible not the best performance.
@Blofse 60fps was not standard on Dreamcast not even close, hell the average person didn't even have a TV back then that supported 60fps.
@Netret0120 Agreed. I personally think the best GTA is still San Andreas, which is a lot more fun to play than 4 or 5 that has better graphics.
If its not 60fps I (and others) just wont buy it and save the money to buy a decent game that does.
They could easily make this game 60fps by cutting back on CPU overloading rubbish, and if Sony insisted on 60fps as a minimum im sure the devs would suddenly find a way to do it.
I still think Mark Cerny stating the massive preference for 60fps was a polite but forceful nudge.
@Panic_Attache yeah it is stupid one.
You'll notice it more I feel on Sony first party games , the 3rd party ones not so much , it'll be like the ps4 pro , hardly supported in my opinion, a bit off topic but you know how they do dynamic graphic scaling , could they not do it with fps , for example in gta 30fps when on foot but it switches to 60fps when in a vehicle , or would that be daft
So uh, what’s the point then?
lol 60fps GTA6, maybe when it releases on PS7 ultra deluxe definitive edition in 13 years time. This is the same reason Dragon’s Dogma 2 likely won’t be THAT much better on PS5 Pro, it’s a CPU throttling issue.
It’ll probably be a 40fps mode knowing the CPU constraints.
Regardless it’ll still be the best resolution and ray tracing/visuals presets for a year minimum (till the PC Port comes) so it’ll still have a blinder marketing wise.
Probably not, but it will likely run it at a more stable 30fps and will almost certainly be the best place to play it on Console. 40fps would be a lovely addition though.
So little point getting a pro just for this game....it will be on the ps6 and ps7 anyway
Why didn’t Sony go with 1tb memory on PS5 Pro and spend the £100 on a better CPU.
So the price still £700. Only 1tb of memory but a better CPU.
Instead of this half baked GPU fancy upscaling approach.

@LogicStrikesAgain Yea exactly. Its developers that design the games around the hardware. 60 FPS is achievable for all consoles if developers design for it from the ground up. Of course that means compromises for a games vision.
@Vaako007 Exactly!
@OldGamer999 Hopefully the next generations of consoles don't have weak sauce CPUs. They will need strong beefy CPUs and developers will need to fully embrace multicore games. As graphics are good now but the next evolution of games is more advanced in game features in which AI can enhance. This will require more CPU power.
@Loamy GTA 6 will be very successful among the large bulk of casual gamers. The people that like to play the titles don't care about performance as the game is fun. FPS for GTA's IMO was never the issue for this game.
@Steel76
40fps is perceived much better than 30fps. I wish every single game had this option. it makes a huge difference. If we can't get 60fps then give us 40fps.
@DennisReynolds
Pretty much every old timey tv had 60HZ refresh rate because they had to match the electrical frequency of the power supply as closely as possible.
@OldGamer999 I wish I knew why mate, only reasoning is corporate schtick, 2TB of SSD Storage is cheaper than a big CPU upgrade, looks better on the box and has better profit margins.
@DonJorginho
You are spot on there, forced profit by adding 2tb instead of 1tb and letting us decided to expand memory or not.
The PS5 Pro would have been at £600 then.
Can we stop taking Digital Foundry as gospel please?
These are the same chaps (as smart as they are) who said Spider-Man 2018 would never run at 60fps on PS5, and said that 60fps on this generation of consoles would be a dream at best.
They also said the Xbox Series X would obliterate the PS5 performance wise and that the TFLOP number was the be or end all of this whole generation.
0/3 so far there.
Rockstar have been releasing 60fps remasters all generation so far, they understand the desire for it, these are the same wizards who got GTAV on the dogwater internals of Xbox 360/PS3.
RDR2 runs at PS4 Pro settings on PS5 (jailbroken) at a locked 60fps, I think it wouldn’t be out the realm of possibility that even the PS5/XSX get some kind of performance mode (albeit maybe a 40fps limit or a blurry FSR2 job)
@Vaako007
I do believe in the PS5 and Series x they have multi core CPU but very few developers use them, the thread cores. So that’s a waste of time having them.
If they did use the multi cores in the existing CPUs they could probably get around the CPU issues.
@OldGamer999 I was always thinking a £589 base with £650 for the disc, and that was my worst case scenario 😭
@DonJorginho
I was at £550 and got a shock 😮
@Pranwell I won’t go as far as to call any of them vile, they seem like reasonable lads (albeit a bit PC biased in the case of Alex) but biases are normal in all industries no matter how hard you try to not show it.
It’s more a perception problem of gaming public taking everything they say as factual.
Already John has been talking in a much more positive manner about the Pro on Twitter so I’m guessing that after they have hands on time with the unit the mood on the console from them will change for the better.
@GreatAuk My old TV wasn't 60hz nor was my families. In fact the only person i knew with a 60hz screen was my Grandad and that's because he always has the best screens going.
I think PS5 Pro won't run anything in 4K 60fps. That's why they present AI (yes, damn AI) balancer for fps and graphics.
@Yagami It’s absolutely the prerogative of each gamer to choose their hill to die on. I don’t begrudge anyone that right. I just think people aren’t being completely honest with themselves when we see GOTY candidates and huge bestselling games that are still coming out at 30 fps, which to me says that the ultimatum of “60 fps or bust” is probably being a tad overstated. A good game is still a good game.
@DennisReynolds
Then what was it? CRT Tvs had 60hz refresh rate in the US. It was 50HZ in some European countries because they used the PAL system.
If GTA runs at 30 I’m not sure I’ll be able to enjoy it. I’m so used to 60 now 🤷♂️
@DennisReynolds @GreatAuk Fairly certain that over half of the Dreamcast North American library ran at 60 fps. The Dreamcast even offered something called PAL 60 which enabled 50 hz PAL televisions to have a refresh rate of 60 fps without borders.
"GTA6 not running at 4K60 on PS5 Pro."
Sony : "Let's make a PS5 Pro Ultra for $900!"
All i want is gta4 remastered
@Vaako007
For 3/4 of all PS5 users to play in performance mode, a lot of casual players prefer Performance. They may still buy the game if its only 30fps (unlike myself who will not play it even if it was free), but those that prefer 60fps may not be as happy.
Completely agree that not being capable of 60fps is a dev choice, particularly when we have a number of big budget games at 80-90fps. Ive said it elsewhere, but Mark Cerny pushing 3/4 prefer performance sounded like a polite but firm nudge to devs to me.
@CielloArc Looking at Wu-Kong and Space Marine 2, native 1440p at 60fps is not possible. Even 1080p native isn't an option
@DennisReynolds I grew up dirt poor in the 1980s, and everyone had a 50Hz TV then (I live in a PAL region, hence 50, not 60Hz). In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a TV of any description that couldn't do 50Hz, let alone them not being common in the late 1990s.
@OldGamer999 Until we see what PSSR can do, and at what cost, it's hard to know if this is the right or wrong approach.
But personally I would have preferred 1TB and disc drive for £649.
Is this going to be another case of "if you zoom in 200% you can see how jaggy the leaf looks" kind of thing?
A 40 fps mode would be superb.
40/45 fps still acceptable but 30? Yikes. My eyes now got adapted to the 60fps,when playing game with fidelity mode, i just can’t stand those choppy frame.
@GreatAuk You know i completely forgot about the Pal being 50hz thing 🤦♂️
@DennisReynolds hmm well every game I played had 60fps so..... Granted I had a pretty new TV which had 60hz support so all good
@Max_the_German
No and yes. No. The CPU is the bottleneck. Yes. Most people notice the difference between 30 and 60fps.
Good thing many modern TV's do great 30 to 60fps interpolation while keeping both visual artefacts and latency penalty to a minimum. Game mode plus on Samsung TV' is a good example. The perfect solution to the problem for a whole lot of single player 3rd person games. Flagship TV's can do so much of what the PS5 pro offers. Faking 60fps on any 30fps game will improve image quality radically, basically rendering the PS5pro all but virtually indistinguishable visually speaking. It'll have the fast 16ms response time and better ray tracing. But that is it.
@DennisReynolds They maybe should rethink that then.
@BrettAwesome ??? I know that the CPU will be the limit. And with „will NOT notice“ I meant that they will not notice that it’s fake 60 fps, they will deem it for real 60 fps.
I demand 60 fps on a console that would cost 1k if it was a PC, that Im getting for 500!
Consoles are cheaper for a reason. Consoles are 30 fps. PC is higher, and cost more. Not that hard to grasp.
@roe super late to reply but wholeheartedly agree. Hope those comes to ps5.
Got to wonder what benefit(s) the game will have being played on a PS5 Pro compared to Series X then. I can’t see it being significant enough to buy the Pro and I also can’t see Rockstar adding GTA VI to the list of games that are being enhanced for specifically for PS5 Pro. We still haven’t even got a 60fps patch for RDR2 after all these years since it released.
I am so sick of developers making games that don't actually play to the strengths of the hardware that millions of players have bought. Nowadays it's kind of "Here's the game we could do if you hadn't bought the crappy hardware available to you."
How about you stop worrying about what you can do, and worry about what most people will be able to play???
@DennisReynolds I have to call out your very incorrect comments.
By the time the nes was released every tv was standard 60hz.
Europe had pal which was 50hz.
But even Europe most tvs were capable of 60hz. Going back to the start of tvs. There wasn't really anything before it. You even had adapters for ps1s at one point due to pirated games in England being 60hz America copies rather than the pal version, used to sit on the back of the ps1
And your assumption about dreamcast is also wrong, well over half of it's games were 60fps.
Apart from Nintendo who's games basically were all 60. Dreamcast was the second console which had the majority of it's games running at 60fps.
Dreamcast was probably thee best console out that generation, it just flopped at market and not because the console was lacking, just miss management by Sega.
But pretty much any game before the ps3 was basically 60fps was the standard.
It was only until 360 and ps3 came that the standard literally dropped down to 30fps due to graphics becoming more complex. It did begin on ps2, but not as bad as when the 360 and ps3 hit.
So reality was 60fps was always the standard until consoles and developers brought it down to 30.
@Bez87 Guess you never read one of my replies when i acknowledged my mistake.
@DennisReynolds I read it after. Wasn't pulling you. I was giving history lesson. And honestly you've brought up bad memories.
Dreamcast was a solid console, in my mind it was the best of the bunch and yet failed
