In what is a rather sudden development, PS5 players are being sent notifications about age verification. At the time of writing, this is limited to players in the UK and Ireland.
The message says that in "compliance with global regulations", users will need to verify their age "later this year" if they want to continue using communication features, including text-based messaging and voice chat on the current-gen console.

The message also includes a QR code that you can scan with your phone (as pictured above), which provides a link to Sony's website. You can then verify your age through three options:
- Facial scan (take a photo of yourself and have the system give you an "age estimation")
- ID (use identification documentation like a driving license, passport, or ID cards to prove your age)
- Mobile number (use a verification code sent as a text message to your phone)

You can find an FAQ on the whole process by clicking through here, via a PlayStation support page.
This kind of age verification process falls in line with recently introduced age verification laws in the UK and Ireland. Age verification is now required to access all kinds of stuff online, much of which is deemed adult content.
However, concerns over data security remain prevalent, and so it'll be interesting to see how this news goes down with PS5 users.

UK trying to steal our data yet again.
I got that email. Yoti.com? Never heard of those yet. Also they already have my phone number on two steps authentication...Sony the hell you are doing. Account is as old as earth too.
Also:
Biometric data retention and consent issues:
In 2026 Spain’s data‑protection authority (AEPD) fined Yoti about €950,000 for storing facial‑scan images longer than it promised and failing to get valid consent for processing biometric data used in age verification. Authorities said Yoti was not properly implementing GDPR principles like “storage limitation” and “lawful basis.”
Coarse “privacy‑first” claims:
Critics argue that a company branding itself “privacy‑first” should not default‑opt users into processing their biometric data for internal research and development, which Spanish and German‑based analyses have flagged as misleading.
Extensive third‑party tracking:
A security‑focused investigation reported that Yoti’s app and website submit device‑level identifiers (Advertising ID, IP, hardware info, etc.) to third‑party trackers like Adjust and Google Firebase without clear, prior consent, potentially violating GDPR cookie‑consent requirements.
Edit. I'm fine without messages if they are dumb enough to valuate my account age. Thousands of ways to message friends if needed
I've managed to avoid these draconian age verification rules so far but the net appears to be tightening.
Grim.
Funny how quickly our governments went from 'companies are taking and misusing too much of your personal information, we're going to regulate them to keep you safe' to 'the internet is too dangerous, we need companies to have more of your personal information to keep you/everyone else safe.'
The acceleration from nanny state to full Orwell is concerning.
Just got the email but the address looked kind of weird. I figured I'd wait until I saw an article here before I did anything. Wasn't expecting one so fast.
They already have my phone number so I'll go with that and nothing else.
I don't think we have the social media age restrictions in Ireland yet. Sony getting ahead of it before it happens?
Update: "An error occurred during communication with the server." 🤷
If such regulations are implemented upon the basis of "Safety", then it must be scrutinized to the highest degree. Too often, "safety" is used to breach the line of ethics as it relates to an individuals privacy.
Is this a once-and-done verification, or do you have to scan that stupid QR code every time you start a party chat? Also, are there any extenuating provisions for those with Benjamin Button syndrome?
I hate all this age verification now some random company has your biometric data till they get hacked.
oh brother here we go again 💀
I play almost exclusively single-player games on PS5 myself (with the lone exception of Marvel Rivals) so this won't affect me a ton but it still sucks to see such overbearing oversight be implemented yet again when they still can't (and most likely never will) guarantee your data won't get compromised despite all their insistence to the contrary.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah first I've heard of it in Ireland too.
Stupid system, tried with my phone number but doesn't even work
I don't use messaging or voice chat on the platform, and I'd rather not hand Sony (or their third party partner I'd never heard of before) my biometric data. So I guess I won't have access to those features going forward.
The funny thing here is my PSN account is over 17 years itself, and has seen constant use in that time period. But somehow they can't work out if I'm old enough to use messages.
Musing - if I don't verify my age does that mean all voice chat is blocked online by default? That'd be a right boon if so.
Ok, stupid question alert: will this affect me buying an age restricted digital game going forward, or is this unaffected? Had both my PS and Xbox accounts since around 2011
Took a read-through of the provided FAQ and one section in particular caught my eye: it says that the act of 'joining parties or group sessions' would be disabled if you haven't verified your age with PlayStation yet. Does that mean you wouldn't be able to play with friends whatsoever until your age has been verified? 😭
Urgh FFS. I really don't want to have to do this to be honest.
@Swirly The FAQ outlines that access to the PS Store alongside purchasing games from it is still grand to do after these restrictions are rolled out.
Bad times here in the UK. Plus all this data is being handed over to Palantir. It says a lot when the guy who really kickstarted all of this - his daughter having killed herself after social media algorithms were feeding into her mental health struggles - is against how hardline the government has become. Also this was passed under the Tories too so it’s pretty much a stitch up by all parties.
@Fizza Cool, thanks. I haven't had a chance to read through all the gubbins yet
@DennisReynolds you think 'they' don't have it all anyway?!
People making a mountain out of a molehill with this, any excuse to be miserable and angry I guess.
@get2sammyb Amen to that. Doubly annoying as myself and @Shepherd_Tallon point out, we don't have these bollocks restrictions here in Ireland, yet are getting lumped in with the UK here.
I don't care for the actual features, but in a way this reminds me that all the time and money I've pumped into my PSN account can vanish in an instant.
I’ve only had my PSN account 19.5 years. And I was over 18 when that was made.
So I assume this will mean all the under 18’s will be banned from messages? Unless their parents do it for them. Though child accounts would still not work in theory.
@1970sGamer Sony Interactive Entertainment already have a copy of my passport? Do tell how this has happened...
@BobSpeed1 that's a good point and hasn't been made clear at all - will all under 18s now be banned from messaging/parties/group chat?
If not, then the whole thing is a pointless data grab
I saw the email, but hesitated when the link wanted me to log in. It's always worth being sceptical of random emails wanting your details. The ever increasing amount of age verification is a nuisance, and I don't fully trust those that are asking for it. Things do get hacked after all.
@Balaam_ It's one and done. While I don't like it, it's also little different than if I walked into a store and tried to buy cigarettes or alcohol, they either judge your age based on how old you look, or want to see ID.
I did the face scan and it took about 30 seconds to scan the QR code with my phone, log in, click a couple of buttons to take a picture. It's pretty painless imo and people making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill as they did when Xbox added it.
At the end of the day I think it's more important that kids are better protected, which is the aim here.
I'm a loner on the playstation side of things due to friends being on Xbox/Pc so I'll try to skip it as much as I can but hopefully they don't make it a requirement like it's in your face every other day.
I don't use either feature so they can sod off.
Bring this to Belgium and I'll kick my ps5 out of my house. Don't they have other problems over there?
I’ve refused to do it on Xbox, and it will be the same for PlayStation. Both gaming platforms have had my bank card details for years, so obviously I’m over any stupid age requirement. I very rarely play online anyway, and certainly don’t use chat 😂 And how does sending a verification code to your phone verify your age?!?
Account age should definitely be the default factor for determining a user’s age. If Apple made it work for their recent iOS 26.4 update there is no reason Sony can’t do the same.
It's a no from me. Not until PlayStation apologises for hiring Jim Ryan and firing Shu.
I got that when i tried as well@Shepherd_Tallon
While I'm all for protective measures to ensure younger players aren't using features they shouldn't be, isn't that really something that should be up to the parents? If you're old enough to be the controlling owner of a console, then most likely you're old enough to use all of the features. If someone younger has access, it's either on your account (so the restricted features wouldn't be blocked anyway) or it's on a child's account, where all of the communication features are blocked by default and need adult access to be worked around.
Case in point: my 9yo uses my PS5 and only ever plays what I have allowed her to play and is always under supervision, so people need to step up and parent so these kinds of verification measures are 100% unnecessary.
@get2sammyb then don't? Doubt that you really need playstation voice chat or messaging. Everyone uses external Comms anyways
How long until the database is hacked and everyone's private information is leaked?
Stuff like this makes me sick especially when it's the same old lie about 'protecting children'. If that is the goal how is Roblox not shut down?
The UK's online unsafety act strikes again.
Shudder the day this comes to the US
@Shepherd_Tallon
Same here today, just tried it, seems like they are lumping Ireland in with the UK...they are different countries Sony.... facepalm
I've been purchasing games rated for 18+ for years and now they ask if I'm over 18?
Oh no, I won't be able to use messaging or voice chat.
Absolutely disgusting. Disguised as “protecting children” when it’s just about giving billion dollar companies more power by hoarding data until they inevitably get hacked. Really hope this gets fought back against before it becomes commonplace in the world, because make no mistake about it this 100% will become reality if it isn’t repelled.
@Nightcrawler71 Probing the information they've provided, the phone verification does this...
What the actual hell. So they cross reference the data with your mobile provider... I'm not sure the mobile provider can furnish a third party with that sort of information.
"... you’ll need to verify your age later this year to continue using ... features, such as messages and voice chat. You will still be able to access ... games, trophies, and the Store, if you do not verify your age."
That will be a no then, until they (inevitably) add 18 etc. game purchases being blocked. No I won't be sending a random third party my ID or photo, so that it's one data breach away from being accessed.
Also not sure how the phone verification works, but I imagine it's only people on monthly contracts, ie. not people like me on a 'pay as you go' service. Otherwise it would be fairly easy for anyone to create essentially a burner phone number to verify.
If that works though, I guess that's exactly what I'd do, a burner phone for £10 to prove I'm an adult on my 18yr old PSN account. Something something, protect the children.
My PSN account is 19 years old and the first trophy earned is 18 years ago (Uncharted First Treasure) yet Sony needs to confirm that I am indeed an old b’stard.
Just when you thought you couldn’t despise this government any more.
If you got nothing to hide then you got nothing to worry about. Only people worrying are child molesters who play Fortnite trying to buy child nudes of kids for vbucks
@1970sGamer So you go into a supermarket to buy alcohol and they then say sorry you can't have it unless we take a picture of you and store it in are system. You would be ok with that?
Its too late. Your data is everywhere already. Sucks but they already know everything about you.
@CaptD I just bought a new iPad and it said it had to age verify me, but would automatically verify me because like your PSN account, I'd had my Apple account so long that I was clearly over 18.
Xbox verified me ages ago. Can't remember now but may have been credit card.
I don't want to send messages on PSN or use voice chat, so I will just refuse to do it and be locked out (I'm 50 btw).
Meanwhile every kid out there will just put in their mobile number, or go running to mummy and she will do the ID for them, so they can keep talking to their friends and she won't have to actually spend time looking after her child when the PlayStation does free childcare for her.
Hilariously, countries that implemented social media bans for children found that it didn't stop children accessing the sites. It only stopped confused old people (like my parents age) who couldn't figure out how to do it!
@Dogbreath
Indeed, the COD (not that I play COD online) lobbies will still be full of kids making unkind remarks about your mother.
As for Xbox didn’t they say that you could chat to people on your friends list, just not randoms which would have been fine by me.
I don't use PSN's messages much at all, but this actually horrible. Why do i have to prove my age to use my game console? i am an adult, i have a bank account to pay for my games, i play adult games. I don't need to validate my age to do play 18+ games on PSN, why do i have to prove my age to message someone. The UK wants my data, they don't want to protect kids.
I didn't bother with this when XBox prompted me to do it, and I'm not going to do it on Playstation either... Both accounts are coming up on 20 years old so it's pretty silly that they'd need verification anyway.
Similar to @Dogbreath, I'm a 47 year old gamer so trying to force me to verify that I'm over 18 to use "chat features" feels somewhat comical to me, especially when it's under the guise of "to protect the children". Again, as @Dogbreath said, all it does is annoy or phase some of the older users, while the younger ones just find workarounds (iirc the XBox verification process was already broken by people uploading images of the characters from Death Stranding 😂 ).
@CaptD Tory initiative, they got it through in '23, just before they got the boot. They scrapped it at first, but the age verification/online security companies kicked off and eventually got their way
@crossbit yes and these practices are said to be introduced for one purpose (that the public are on board with) but are actually used for many more (that the public don’t even know about let alone agree with).
CaptD is right that Xbox merely limit comms to friends, rather than randoms. That actually sounds brilliant and a good reason NOT to verify! Wish I hadn't now!
I'm so old that I actually have a paper driving licence and no photo licence (I'm not legally required as my address hasn't changed since I got it, and I got it before the cut off date).
I also don't fly (I'm big on environmental issues) so don't have a passport either!
Using mobile verification or credit cards is great, but eventually I can see them requiring photo ID, at which point I will be knocking on the door of 60 years old yet getting banned from all these services!!!!
So I have to prove I'm 18 to send a message on an account they've happily sold me 18 rated content for years? My account itself is probably 18 years old, so surely they could simply assume I'm already old enough.
I had the same rubbish with Xbox, I had to prove I was over 18 on an account that was about 25 years old 😂😂 you couldn't make this nonsense up.
I might just buy that Neo Geo and forget the modern online world exists
Well hopefully that phone number option works, because no way am I uploading my face to one of those shady tech companies. Prob end up seeing it appearing in some ai picture a week later.
@Gremio108
Doesn’t matter who came up with the idea, the Tories came up with PFI’s but it wasn’t until the other lot got their hands on them that the brown stuff really hit the fan.
Wow! This is nearly on the level of dumbeffery we do in the United States. Though, I think we still have you beat by a long shot given the situation in the world. Still, number one, baby!!!
Both my Xbox and Sony accounts are so old it’s impossible for me not to be old enough. Absolutely a common sense failure again. Shame on everyone involved
Well this is some *****!
Similar to what others have mentioned I've had my current account for maybe 15 years and Sony can't figure out that I was probably more than 3 years old when I was using my debit card to buy games from them.
I do use voice chat to keep in touch with some friends when we're online at the same time whether or not were playing the same game so guess I'm gonna have to go for it one way or another.
I'm very much averse to giving out my data to any companies wherever possible so not happy with this.
As I said already... Some *****.
Edit: Well what dyou know... I'm not allowed to say *****!
(Rhymes with dull Brit 😉)
My iPad did something similar. It put up a message saying it needed ID to confirm I was over 18, then put up another message saying I had an iTunes account which proved I was old and I didn’t need to do anything after all.
Couldn’t care less about chatting online on the PS5.
I ignored this on Xbox and had no issues nor did it change anything in how I used the console. I will do exactly the same on my PS5.
Gaming is my escape from people I don't want to talk to you all while I am playing even with online games. So my chat options will be restricted. Oh No! .... anyway moving on
Not my problem YET (not from an age perspective rather than a privacy perspective), but when it pops up, the face recognition seems the best option. That's where you can at least use AI to trick AI xD
Until they make a locally stored token (e.g. on your phone) that gives out a simple confirmation of minimum age in an anonymised way I'm forgoing purchasing digital content.
If they go beyond blocking social features I won't bother with PS+ beyond that.
If it extends to which games I can play I'm done with the Playstation ecosystem.
I'm not holding Sony entirely responsible or anything, as usual it's government overreach.
I'm not against age verification, I'm against giving biometric information to random third parties. There will come a day when this type data will be used to spoof security systems or something similar.
Anyone know whether Discord access is cut off if you refuse? That’s all I use for voice chat. Could care less about messages, all I get is spam.
Maybe this will lead to fewer 18+ games being made. Or at least the content that would make them so.
While this is incredibly annoying, your ire should be directed at the government because they have forced Microsoft and Sony to implement this nonsense.
(This verification relies on matching the information your mobile provider has on file for you. As long as you are the owner of the phone contract and your details match, you’ll be able to confirm your details.)
Does this mean in the future when it comes to the US because I'm on a family plan with my parents being the account holder I have to use there phone for this bs?
Yes I'm over 18
I just managed to do this (using phone verification) using my PS5 (Pro) console - not via email or website.
There is a new category on your PS5 in: Settings / User and Accounts / Account, called Age Verification.
Clicking on it, and going on a page or 2 allowed me to have a code sent to my mobile (my phone number was already included as Sony already have it).
I typed in the code on my PS5, that I had received on my mobile, and I was told my age was verified.
NB I do have a monthly contract with my provider if this is relevant, reading comments above.
@get2sammyb @ShogunRok - A heads up as this seems additional to what your article describes.
NB2 - Once I did it, the new Age Verification option disappeared from the settings.
Not a chance.....im not falling for this north Korean crap...... just another way for this pathetic digital id
I never use voice chat and very very rarely use messages so I’ve no intention of doing that.
@DennisReynolds same government happy to allow Palantir to do the same with our health records. Absolutely astounding how weak this government have been considering how they came in on a landslide.
I haven't verified for anything yet so I guess it's gives me one more excuse to not play online. Not that I've communicated with randoms on mic since the 360 days but I assume it's voice chat.
Or I'll just pay my mate again to use his details and verification
Fun times. I love out digital overlords because won't somebody please think of the children.... Or something like that
@1970sGamer have fun ignoring all privacy concerns along with companies and potentially bad actors have full access to your biometric data linked to all your personal details to do whatever they want with
@MatthewJP it's all a pointless data grab
@themightyant it's not to protect kids even in the slightest. That's just a vague background excuse.
It's also nothing like going into a place and showing then your ID
Woo. A heartfelt thanks to our globally homogenising and intrusive overlords! It's for the Greater Good™, don't you know.
A liebour gov who want to protect kids but are covering up the gamgs enquiry this is going to backfire big time, this about control
@Stickleman what do you mean it’s got nothing to do with kids safety? That’s literally the reason the age gating is in place, it’s UK law now, much like porn, alcohol, etc.
How is it different to a store scanning your ID?
@BusyOlf Your government doesn't even respect the Magna Carta and violates your free speech.
verification age is not smart as the data could be hacked. "we will deleted the photo after verified age" doesn't buy. afraid it will become normalise in decade and your children won't know what the world look like without it.
I got the email. But I'll ignore it. I don't need to use communications anyway. I have discord for that.
@themightyant They’re not better protected. Porn and the like can easily be gotten around with VPNs and with games, it’s not 12 year olds buying GTA and COD, it’s the parents, those same adults that will give their children their IDs to access online services. It’s different to stores because they don’t keep your ID within some database that has been and will again be breached. It’s not the same at all, I don’t know why you’re trying to compare the two.
The issues with this are clear as day, it doesn’t solve anything, just create more problems. I don’t understand why you’re trying to hard to convince yourself otherwise. They’re pissing on your head and believing them when they tell you it’s raining, come on now.
Crack out the Norman Reedus photos, lads!
@BrokenByTheScream By my understanding, and perhaps I missed something in the FAQ, it doesn’t store your data, it’s a one off check then the photo / data is deleted and you are marked as age verified with Sony, hence there’s nothing to hack. What is your concern?
Of course there are ways around it, just as kids can give adults money to buy booze or fags outside an offie, but age restrictions still makes it harder for them to access it.
For this VPNs are possible but not so easy with PS5, you can’t just activate an app you have to do it directly on the router, or similar. Much like buying fags, porn or booze it doesn’t eliminate all avenues to get them, but It does make it harder, that’s a good thing imo. If parents want to still let them do it afterwards so be it.
@CaptD Course it does, if they hadn't come up with it, then it wouldn't be a thing
@Balaam_ its a one and done thing once you verified your cute face etc its locked in on your account!
i did it from my PS5 by scanning the QR code quick and simple process now its done and LOCKED IN to my account - and for anyone asking ( once you verified your age its done once in once done!)
@CutchuSlow well good luck in trying to buy a 18+ game then from the ps store ya didnt think about that did you laddo 🤣
@themightyant well i didnt complain i just got it done !
@Richy2025 Just to let you know this has nothing to do with buying games and age ratings, just online chat and messaging.
@DennisReynolds dont talk wet !
@themightyant thanx for the heads up but i guessed that anyway lol i chat to some of my ps5 freinds alot so i had to do that pointless check just to get rid of the stupid popups LOL
@Stickleman nice strawman.
Doesn't bother me, it only locks features I don't use anyway.
Removed - unconstructive
@sorteddan arm pit lol
So this is a UK mandated law right? Insane and scary to imagine more countries slowly implementing something similar.
Wouldn't mind if it worked. I keep trying the phone number option and I keep getting "The connection with the server has been reset."
I did it months ago on my Xbox account with no problem.
Shouldn't be necessary, though... I set the account up in 2006, so I'm obviously over 18.
Hopefully all this nonsense gets revoked in a few years, when we get shot of this lying, spineless, moronically incompetent government.
@Paranoimia Labour Party are parasites, are evil, friends of the IRGC and will do everything they can in there power even jailing people who don't vote for them and force this crap harder & harder the longer they have power
The Labour Party UK & EU are forcing this ***** on the whole world
@XenonKnight If the Labour Party are parasites, then why vote for them and/or support them?
@KnightRider1982 I'm not British and if I was i would have never voted them in and the Conservative are spineless, cowards
This all about control. Don't let them fool you. I will delay this for as long as possible
@cainhurst94 It many times worse in China and Hong Kong isn't any better then china
In Hong Kong your only allowed to do things as long as it's convenient for the CCP
Verified mine through the ps5 using my mobile number. It took less than a minute. I didn't burst into flames either or suffer a pox on my soul...oh wait I already sold that to Sony..
@Netret0120 As long as you don't use voice or messages, you'll be fine.
@themightyant First of all, it's a shop not a store and they don't scan your ID now, do they? They just look at it for 3 seconds and nod. No data being stored anywhere but in someone's brain for 2 minutes.
@XenonKnight I don't have to give my HKID for anything. Hong Kongs censorship is only focused on national security (so movies that show the HKPF or gov in a bad light). Adult content, LGBT content, chat messages, discord etc are fine.
China... yeah that is a different story.
Ah yes, all to "protect the children".
@Northern_munkey ...yet
I'm hoping they take into consideration my PSN account is over 18 years old automatically.... Alas I know this will not be the case.
Ok, I did it and I really don't get it. Couldn't have I passed my phone to someone else to scan their face instead?
@Scarface993 my niece and nephew use my ps4 and have access to my account. No matter how old the account it is, it doesn't necessarily follow that it's used by an adult.
@naruball Very good point I never thought about that
