SEGA Mega Drive Classics is one of those games you've probably already made up your mind about. The Mega Drive (or the Genesis, depending on where you are) played host to some absolute gems in the 90s, and for many, the chance to relive some fond memories on PS4 will be an attractive proposal. There are over 50 games in this retro compendium, and whether you look back fondly on SEGA's 16-bit console or not, there's bound to be at least a couple of games in here that anyone can enjoy.
It's clear that the publisher has done its best to cover as wide a variety of games as possible while ensuring to hit on all the titles you'd expect. While it's hard to argue against the inclusion of most of the games, there are a few notable omissions: OutRun, Super Hang-On, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Ecco the Dolphin, some of which featured in PS3's collection, are all missing. Of course, everyone's view on these games is subjective, but it's somewhat an injustice that some of the above are excluded when three Golden Axe games made the cut.
However, well over a dozen games have been added to the roster, many of which make their debut in a Mega Drive collection. Gunstar Heroes, Space Harrier II, and ToeJam & Earl all unquestionably deserve their place here, and almost all tastes are accounted for with the sheer variety on offer. Despite the exclusion of a few no-brainers, this is still the largest and arguably best collection to date.
All the games run as you'd expect, although we did notice some very occasional momentary freezes and stuttering. It's not enough to be much of a concern, and 99 per cent of the time, the games are responsive and perform extremely well. From a presentation standpoint, the games all look and sound as they should, but you do have a degree of flexibility on the emulator should you want to smooth the picture, stretch it to full screen, add scanlines, and more. You adjust this via the console in the main menu, which has you moving about a 3D 90s bedroom. You flick between the shelves where you can sort and select your games, controllers to adjust, well, the controls, the notebook to view challenges and leaderboards, and so on. It's a novel approach that works well enough, but navigation can be surprisingly cumbersome.
Modern features have been incorporated well: leaderboards for some of the games track high scores or total kills, multiplayer is available both online and offline, and the ability to create saves has been added across the board. You can also rewind and fast forward games at will, an option that somewhat trivialises the challenge in some titles, but is a welcome inclusion if you're stuck or want to skip dialogue.
The real joy of SEGA Mega Drive Classics is that hit of nostalgia as you play through your old favourites for the umpteenth time, but if you want to shake things up a bit, there are a couple of ways to do so. You can apply mirror mode to all games, flipping the screen and the controls for a true test of dexterity and muscle memory. A slew of challenges will put you through your paces, too. These set specific parameters, such as earning 5,000 points in Columns from a predetermined save, or winning the Kung Fung Tournament in Comix Zone with reduced health. It's a neat addition that, alongside the trophies, will have you playing games you might otherwise never touch.
As for the games themselves? Many of them still hold up today with gorgeous visuals, music, and gameplay. Columns' straightforward gem matching is simple but addictive, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains one of the Blue Blur's best outings, and the seminal Streets of Rage trilogy remains the daddy of beat-'em-ups. There are some anomalies, of course -- Altered Beast is still a dreadful side-scroller, and good luck trying to play Sonic 3D Blast -- but fortunately the good outweighs the bad.
Conclusion
SEGA Mega Drive Classics is a very generous package, offering over 50 16-bit titles for a very reasonable price. The emulation is of a very high standard, and quality of life improvements such as game saves make the often tough titles more digestible. Online play, leaderboards, and challenges help flesh it all out, too, giving you a decent amount of extras on top of the broad range of action games, RPGs, platformers, and everything in between. For many, the nostalgia overload will be enough to spur on a purchase, but those who may have missed out on the Mega Drive will find that this is an ideal way to experience its best titles -- if you can excuse some disappointing omissions.

well until they add Sonic 3 and Sonic a Knuckles i'll stick with my PS3 collection
no point buying an inferior version of something i already have just because it's on the PS4
Let me know if you have any questions
Ah, so its just the Steam release from years ago. Shame.
And they can never decide if they can add Sonic 3 or not.
Kinda want ToeJam & Earl on tap.
Very tempted, but I got so many games with so little time
I'm strangely looking forward to getting this next week. Have played most of these games before of course but something about the way they've put this collection together appeals to me.
Why not buy the Snes/Super Famicom mini ?
I have hacked mine to play all kinds of retro classics.
Not for me, but would love an Sega arcade collection instead
Landstalker and Gunstar make it a must buy for me, but I'll buy any SEGA collection.
@Strebor_ Because this is a cheaper and not legally grey way to play the games?
Do you know how much this will be in Europe on PSN?
How many challenges are there?
Very tempting, although I am genuinely a bit gutted Super Hang On isn't on there. Still plenty of good stuff at least.
Still got the PS3 Mega Drive collection and own Toe Jam & Earl 1 and 2 on PS3 but I'll pick this up for the convenience. Just not decided if I can wait for a discount. Hopefully we get some more games added down the line. Id love to see Road Rash, Aladdin, James Pond. Etc.
Also, why is it always Mega Drive games. I'd love a Master System, Saturn and Dreamcast collection.
@Wesker The game is £24.99/€29.99, and there are 20 challenges.
@Quintumply Thanks a lot. That's very helpful.
Great review,been really looking forward to this.Sega was the King in the megadrive days
Shining Force will be the first game I try!Then Gunstar Heroes,Streets Of Rage,Sonic 2...etc etc..
Just going to drop this bomb and walk away......Sonic games were never any good. 😞
@Lovespuds
I have no interest in blue hedgehogs either but plenty of other games on there worth playing.
Will there be a street fighter anniverary collection review? Getting both the sega and street fighter collection on Tuesday.
I still have my (non-working) Genesis. I really should get around to having it fixed but I held onto it because it was my first console. This'll be like buying my Genesis all over again, just with 10 times the games I originally owned and revisiting most of the great games I either rented or borrowed back in the day. Good times
@Lovespuds IGN, is that you?
@Quintumply I got a few. Can you switch between Japanese version of the game? Are there any arcade games? And do the Streets of Rage games have online?
@shonenjump86 You can indeed switch between different versions, but not on all games. I don't think there are any arcade games - I never found any. And yes, you can play Streets of Rage online.
It's the steam release from about 2 3 years ago, really Sega are cashing in because how many times now have they released there mega drive classics
@Quintumply thank you
Lol they still won't put Sonic 3 & Knuckles in one of these collections? Haven't seen the game on consoles since Sonic Mega Collection on PS2/GameCube/Xbox. Also Ecco 2 is one of my favorites (that sweet music!) Disappointed and will not be getting this
@tabris95 I think Sonic 3 and Knuckles was on the collection for PS3/360. I think
@Quintumply My one question; can I play the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3?
I have preordered it immediately when it appeared in the store
@RainbowGazelle Yep!
@hulkie There will!
@Quintumply Thank you! This is an insta-buy now!
It mentioned in the pre order terms and conditions that in game purchases optional. I posted a screen grab to the pushsquare ps4 community. Any idea what that means @quintumply
@themcnoisy There aren't any in-game purchases in this game, so you can ignore the Store listing! To be honest, I think that phrase is on game pages by default, and doesn't really mean anything in a lot of cases. It can be quite misleading!
@shonenjump86 Haha no. We got Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, but not the combined game Sonic 3 & Knuckles the way it's supposed to be played
@themcnoisy on Steam you can buy every single game separately, it is the same thing as far as I know except the fact on consoles you buy it as a whole package, on Steam you get the program once you buy the first retrogame and you find only the retrogames you choose to buy into it, so probably it refers to the Steam version
I like
@tabris95 it’s been a few good years since I played that collection. That sucks that it ain’t on there.
@LuckyLand @Quintumply Thank you. Thats great to know.
I had those curtains.
No Thunder Force IV, Quack Shot or Sonic and Knuckles makes this a pass...until a sale.
I like what I’ve seen of the menu hub/interface so far. I’ve always thought Sony and Nintendo have missed a trick with their Virtual Console and Classics releases. I’d love to have all my classic purchases in a hub of sorts where you can view the boxes from all angles, read the original manuals in all their glory, and even view 3D replicas of the controllers and consoles themselves. Probably quite niche and not worth it profit wise for them, but the nostalgia buzz would be awesome. I love the 80’s / 90’s bedroom too!
@Quintumply Alright, enough of the pleasantries: what's the trophy list like?
@johncalmc It’s a mix of easy stuff and hard stuff. It ranges from simply playing 20 of the games to not throwing any shurikens in a level of Shinobi 3, or beating all the in-game challenges. 26 trophies in total, and I’d say it’s doable, but it’s not going to be a total breeze.
Really enjoyed the Megadrive Collection on the PS3. However, think the omission of Revenge of Shinobi (my favourite of the Shinobi games), Eternal Champions (which is by far a better beat 'em up than the Megadrive version of Virtua Fighter 2, IMO), as well as the games omitted from the PS3 version is probably enough to put me off purchasing this immediately.
Think I'll wait for this to drop in a PSN Sale.
@Dange If they did a Saturn or Dreamcast collection that would be an instant pre-order!!
@Quintumply Is there a platinum?
@johncalmc There is indeed!
@Quintumply I've pre-ordered it! My girlfriend will be thrilled.
@johncalmc Nice! Enjoy.
@JoeBlogs Sonic 2 (the only classic Sonic game that I don't like) is much more frustrating than Sonic 3, and also in all the best Sonic games there are some stages where you can't always run (for example Marble Zone in Sonic 1, the best Sonic game ever made).
I'm not complaining about the absence of Sonic 3&K because Sonic 1 is the best, but Sonic 3&K is a very good game anyway and it feels weird that they didn't put it here. I never had the feeling that it was frustrating or unfair, Sonic 2 is much worse.
Seriously, what is up with Sega and Sonic 3+Knuckles? I don't think I've seen a release of that game since the DS based Sonic Classic Collection, and since then I think they've taken the games off the PSN for PS3, and while Sonic 1 and 2 get rereleases out the wazoo (complations such as this, mobile versions, those awesome 3DS ports), 3+K doesn't even get released as the component games!
Still disappointed we aren't getting this collection on the Switch, the Sega Ages Collection doesn't look as impressive based on what we know so far. I would buy this for the Switch in an instant as it is my preferred platform for retro games.
@Quintumply in the review you mentioned altered beast. Does it run bad or do u just not like the game?
@ellsworth004 Not a fan. It’s aged very poorly, and it wasn’t that good to begin with. That’s just me, though
@Quintumply I remember playing it in the arcade when I was a kid a very long time ago. Haven't played it in years but I would imagine the arcade game was probably better than Genesis version.
@Dpishere As far as I know Sega Ages on Switch will be even better, they will be improved versions of classic games (like Sega 3D classics on 3DS, extremely faithful but also with improvements and additions) and some of those games will be the arcade versions not just the console version. I hope that Golden Axe will be the arcade version because it is so much better, it has gorgeous graphics and it is even easier than the console version (really weird imho, arcade games were made to suck all your coins, it would have been more reasonable to make the home version easier imho)
Maybe some of the missing games will be dlc?
@LieutenantFatman
For sure, I have very fond memories of the likes of Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi and bizarrely, Rambo III (as a 17 year old I loved that game for some reason).
I just never saw the attraction with Sonic but then again, I was always more of a Mario fan anyway.
I can't find how to view the game manuals.
Absolutely fuming. Bought this collection expecting it to run smoothly. Fired up the first game Sonic the Hedgehog and it's an absolute joke. I'm not even kidding. About half a second delay between pressing the jump button and Sonic doing it. Tried Sonic 2, same thing. Changed pads, same thing. Reassigned pads, still doing it. To someone less familiar it's not so noticeable and in a Mario game maybe I wouldn't notice but for a Sonic game based on speed and timing jumps- unplayable for me. I've just spent £25 on this junk and can't even get a refund as it's a digital copy. Not happy. Either i have a dud PS4 (but all other downloaded games work perfectly) or this game is broken.
Oh and the sound is way off too. How am I the only one to notice this? Its terrible emulation.
@Dange you’re not the only one to notice this, just one of the few to notice on the main review sites. The steam version of the game has a forum topic that has recent posts commenting on the broken sound too (scroll down to see the recent 1s) - https://steamcommunity.com/app/34270/discussions/0/357284767255892425/?ctp=2.
I don’t know if the reviewers got a different version of the game, or just don’t know how the original’s sounded (although some of the sounds are so bad, I don’t know how anyone couldn’t notice), but v1.01 sounds are broken. Here’s a 20sec YouTube clip which shows it - https://youtu.be/uPV6zDrncKY - I really hope Sega fix this..
@gdog989 Thank you for the heads up. I searched all sorts of reviews and comments but couldn't find anything regarding these issues. It's nice to know it's not just me that's noticed.
I'm no expert, which is why I can't believe none of the reviews noticed. For me the controls and sound are pretty important. Like you say, maybe review copies didn't have this issue. But they should be the same as what we get our hands on. I just hope SEGA patch the games. It's hard not to notice the terrible sound. Some parts are like a record skipping.
Played some Streets of Rage 1 & 2 last night and the sound is not right with them either so it's not just an issue with the Sonic games.
@get2sammyb sorry if I've tagged the wrong person but just wanted to know if a review could be revisited if unknown issues are found post release? It's a little misleading as is. I wouldn't have bought this if I'd known how terrible the controls were. At least not until something is done to fix the game breaking issues (Sonic games rely on speed and timing, and the half second delay when jumping makes them practically unplayable)
@Dange indeed, I watched many YouTube reviews, and 1 of the main reasons I bought the game was coz several reviewers said - the games all look, sound and play right. Clearly the sound is broken, not just sound fx, but also music (just let the title/intro music play, & it’ll start to sound weird after a bit - I tested SOR2, & Golden Axe1)
I was never a big Sonic fan, but I think I did read somewhere (maybe on the Steam forum) someone say exactly what you’re describing, calling it input lag. Either way I can’t play the games as is, the broken sound is too annoying & totally ruins the experience for me.
@get2sammyb I totally agree with @Dange that the review should be updated to reflect the release version, and if possible Sega contacted to see if/when they can fix these issues.
Thanks for reading, wishing you all the best
Just like to leave a link to a vid that talks about this collection & also past Sega collections - https://youtu.be/b1ulA75lVgg Also, even with the sound bugs, I am enjoying these games now, although I’d still really appreciate the sound being improved. Finally, there could be a VR update for this game on PS4, due to the Steam version being updated to support VR
Thanks for reading, wishing you all the best
