Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, More Closed in Brutal Bethesda Restructure 1

Microsoft is making some major changes to Bethesda and its development teams, resulting in job losses and the closure of multiple studios.

As reported by IGN, head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty sent a company-wide email detailing the restructure plan. In it, it's confirmed that Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games will be shuttered. Meanwhile, Roundhouse Studios will be folded into ZeniMax Online Studios.

Arkane Austin is the studio behind Redfall, but is also known for making PREY. Tango Gameworks is the studio founded by Shinji Mikami (who left last year, by the way), and is behind the Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and most recently, Hi-Fi Rush — a former Xbox exclusive that recently came to PS5. Alpha Dog Games is a mobile game developer, most recently known for Mighty DOOM.

In addition to the studio closures, some jobs within Bethesda publishing and corporate teams are being cut. This whole consolidation process is part of a plan "prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds".

It's not known just how many people are affected by these changes, but it's a cutthroat approach from Microsoft as it looks to clean up operations under Bethesda. "We are making these tough decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games," Booty says.

"As we align our plans and resources to best set ourselves up for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams across Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well-positioned to build new IP, explore new game concepts, and expand on our existing franchises," he signs off.

It's another big blow to the industry, which has seen a huge amount of redundancies and studio closures this year and last.
