99 in North America as of February 27th. The news comes a month after Sony announced the PSP's successor, the NGP, in Japan.
The PSP system set the standard for complete portable entertainment and continues to be the premiere destination for gamers on-the-go, said SCEAs Tim Bender.
Nearly six years after its initial launch, demand for the PSP remains strong. This new price point enables us to broaden the PSP platform to a larger group of consumers who are looking for best-in-class handheld entertainment.
In addition to the new price-point, Sony's said that it's adding 13 new games to the PSP's "Greatest Hits" catalogue. It brings the label's total catalogue up to 70 titles. New additions include: Assassins Creed Bloodlines, Dissidia, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Resistance: Retribution, and Toy Story 3: The Video Game. Each of which will retail for $19.99.
SCEE remained coy as to whether the PSP would receive a price-drop in Europe, stating: We have nothing to say at this time regarding the price of PSP within the SCEE region. PSP has been performing particularly well in Europe so far this year and we look forward to sharing some exciting plans that we have for PSP throughout the year.
The price-cut is probably a case of too little, too late for the PSP, with Nintendo's 3DS now lingering on the horizon. If you've yet to pick-up a PSP though, there's never been a better time. And with an enormous catalogue of games to plough through, it should keep you occupied until the impending NGP release.
