A ruling by the civil court of justice in the Hague has called for all PS3s to be confiscated as they are imported into the UK and the rest of Europe. The injunction could be extended if LG wins the case. Alternatively it could be lifted as soon as tomorrow when Sony appeal the decision.
Apparently tens of thousands of PS3s were seized by customs officials in Holland last week. Sony imports around 100,000 consoles a week. According to the report, around two to three weeks' worth of systems are currently in stock around Europe. Should the injunction be extended, there could be a serious stock shortage.
We reported on Sony's dispute with LG last month, which centres on Blu-ray technology patent infringements. At the time, the actions were reported to be an act of revenge on LG's part for "cases brought against them by Sony in December". We never thought we'd actually follow up the story at the time.
