Seriously, what a way to liven up a dingey Sunday afternoon. Sony's just announced the "PSP Remaster Series" for PlayStation 3 in Japan, an initiative that will not only bring popular PlayStation Portable content to the big screen, but also pave the way for the NGP.
Announced alongside Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD — which understandably sent Japan wild — the PSP Remaster Series will bring spruced up PlayStation Portabe content to the PS3, along with full DualShock 3 compatibility, PS3 exclusive content, 3D support and more. Make no mistake, this news is huge.
Perhaps even bigger than the previous set of features though, is cross-save compatibility. The feature is no doubt paving the way for the NGP, allowing players to make progress in games on the PlayStation 3, before switching to the PlayStation Portable and back again.
The PS3 games will also be integrated into Sony's Ad-hoc Party application, making local multiplayer games like Monster Hunter playable online.
The series is set to kick off in Japan first, but we imagine Sony will have Western plans to announce at E3. The games will be released on Blu-ray in Japan, though Andriasang points out that the wording of Sony's statement makes international and digital releases equally likely.
Alongside the announcement — which we should remind you is huge in itself — Sony confirmed that the first game to receive the PSP Remaster Series treatment will be Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD. Naturally Japan is going nuts over this announcement, and Sony probably just sold a huge number of consoles because of it.
