Our individual Game of the Year articles allow our lovely team of writers to share their own personal PS5 and PS4 picks for 2022. Today, it's the turn of video producer Aaron Bayne.
5. Rainbow Six: Extraction
I was about as surprised as you likely are to see Rainbow Six Extraction in a top five anything, let alone my personal picks of the year. But despite having not played this game since the early part of the year, I cannot stop thinking about the fun, tense, and tactical time I had with some pals in this alien-tinged Siege spin-off. With manageable levelling, tight gameplay, and borderline mandatory team coordination, this was everything I wanted from a tactical first-person shooter.
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 / Warzone 2
Moving from one shooter to the next, Call of Duty is one of those series that you really want to take a break from, but you just can’t. And after a couple of duffers, Modern Warfare 2 had me back grinding those gold camos like I was 13 all over again. Whether it be the sense of capturing the good old days, or the now streamlined extension of Warzone 2.0 delivering all kinds of manic fun, I cannot get enough of Modern Warfare 2 in 2022.
3. Sifu
Sifu utterly entranced me in 2022, with its tight-knit kung fu gameplay, and hard as nails difficulty. Ageing as you died meant that it didn’t matter if the game only really had a handful of levels, as I became obsessed with streamlining each run to include bigger combos and less deaths. I had a personal vendetta against Sean, the second level’s boss, and still remember the screams echoing through my flat when I finally beat him (suck it, Sean).
2. The Last of Us: Part I
It is no secret that I love The Last of Us, so while there are undoubtedly plenty of games that probably deserve to be here more, I couldn’t help but include Naughty Dog’s PS5 remake. With a new technical lick of paint, Part I easily became one of the best looking games on the console, and playing through its story for the 8th time with all the boosted graphics and features was like watching my favourite movie in 4K Blu-ray. The emotional gut punches hit harder, the gameplay felt all the more brutal, and those stellar performances were truly brought to life.
1. God of War Ragnarok
God of War Ragnarok was undoubtedly the game I was most excited for in 2022, and it really smashed every one of those expectations I had. This is a much more epic tale over the more personal story in God of War (2018), but Santa Monica never loses sight of the characters with some engrossing performances, and captivating storytelling — and that’s without mentioning the far improved and expanded upon gameplay. Some scenes in this game will stay with me for a long time thanks to Eric Williams’ impeccable direction, the emotionally weighty turn as Kratos from Christopher Judge, and composer Bear McCreary just casually busting out one of the greatest soundtracks known to man.

I unfortunately had to take my time before getting around of finishing GOWR, but it is an amazing game. Hands down best of 2022, regardless of platform.
It takes a few hours for it to get going, but once it does, it just constantly 1ups a previous scene/setup. So much so, that last maybe 8-10 hours are just epic. Could not get the smile of my face.
All mediocre reviews of GOWR out there, which there are not many, I believe are simply by people who have not passed through that "same old" begining. To them I say, give it another shot, it will be worth it.
I agree with number 1.god of war is a masterpiece.easily one of the best games ever made.kratos the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.word up son
Ah, GoW:R is truly a masterpiece and a worthy #1 of 2022!
Gran Turismo 7 was my game of the year for much of 2022. Then Ragnarok came along and blitzed it and every other game this year. A genuine masterpiece.
@The_Pixel_King Gran Turismo is one of the best PS5 games and ONE of the GOT for me too
Ragnarok is such a masterpiece it’s made trying to find a game after beating it hard it’s crazy lol. The game just constantly one ups itself and once you get to act three it’s just I can’t even express what it is lol but what I can express is it’s easily the best game this year and one of my all time favorites already.
@PenguinLtd really it’s one of the best written games ever and easily the best written game this year and the story was suitably epic while still maintaining a personal feel. The gameplay was amazing in 2018 but it’s even better in Ragnarok like i don’t understand how someone could have liked 2018 combat but find Ragnarok combat underwhelming when it’s improved in every way and is even better.
@PenguinLtd the mini bosses had good move variety and the combat never feels dull especially once you get the third weapon which is freaking great. I thought the pacing was good and each main mission felt like a one hour episode of tv and at the end you could go off and explore and do sidequests or continue on to the next main mission. I also don’t see what was confusing about the armor and equipment upgrades they lay it out there plain as day and it was fun to find a new build for your play style. You want to talk about messed up pacing I see you liked elden ring which is a great game I even got the plat for it but it’s pacing is horrible especially for the sidequest
Ragnarok was good, but just more of the same. How people can say it smashed their expectations is beyond me. It's not like going from Ocarina Of Time to Majora's Mask, it's like going from God Of War.....to God Of War. Which, once again isn't a bad thing, but man the way you guys carry on you'd think its 1996 again & Mario 64 just came out.
@PenguinLtd
I've just started GOWR as I got it for christmas but yeah; that upgrade system was pretty bad in 2018 and I really don't dig they kept that.
I get it; every game needs to be 'open world-ish' with 'rpg elements' but it's getting OLD.
Really interesting to see Rainbow Six Extraction on there. I think I saw the PushSquare review score and immediately dismissed it, but now you have me intrigued. Always on the lookout for a good multiplayer co-op shooter.
@Ichiban it was the story that smashed expectations - so many twists and turns and the side content adds even more layers of richness to the world. The gameplay was mostly as expected but also improved/refined. It could have failed to live up to expectations (like Horizon Forbidden West did for me) but it delivered more than I could have hoped. I think Uncharted 2 was the last game to achieve this feat (being better in every way to the first game).
Worst list yet! Last of us wasn't a big leap
@MB81 I’m in the same boat. Reviews didn’t do much to intrigue me but me and a couple of pals have been enjoying DMZ of late and so am thinking of our extraction options…very little on console by the looks of it. Vigor doesn’t look too polished so only Rainbow Six Extraction or Hunt Showdown. Might have to give it a go.
Besides GoW this is the worst list hands down so far.
Good list for the most part. I'll never understand why we still give Ubisoft and Activision attention, but I guess that's a me problem.
Sifu is amazing
TLOU with better graphics got the shill in me.
I will play Ragnarok... One day.
@Ken_Kaniff nah the dude who's list was 3 re-releases and Sonic Frontiers was SO MUCH worse than this one lmao
At least 4 of the 5 games here released this year.
Glad to see RAINBOW SIX: Extraction get some love! I really enjoyed this game and it was definitely one of the more fun experiences I had gaming this year.
Am I the only one who found GoWR to be a bit boring? There's a lot of really slow climbing and crawling through small spaces in that game. And every puzzle is explained before I even got a chance to look around first. Way worse with the hints that Horizon Forbidden West and I though HFW was doing it too much. Story, script, performance, combat and graphics are all incredible. But traversal and puzzles are too slow and too mediocre. Oh, and the collectibles needed for platinum are ridicilous. I thought that trend ended many years ago.
This is the best list i’ve seen. Gran Turismo would be 5th an TLOU Part 1 1st, GoWR 2nd.
@Ichiban oddly enough, going from Ocarina of Time to Majora’s Mask wasn’t a good thing. Majora was a dud compared to Ocarina. But of course, all these things are based on opinion so…
Y’all are like “Ew, this list isn’t good…” But the titles clearly state that these lists are some individual’s chosen favorites. They’re telling you what they like, they’re not telling you what you should like or asking you to tell them what they should like. Sheesh!
@Pathfinder3497 Must have missed that one, lol.
