Our Game of the Year coverage continues with the Best PS5, PS4 Story Game of 2022, of which a top four has been put together by the Push Square editorial team. This category crowns the best PS5, PS4 titles that made their stories a very important pillar of the experience. At the end, we will list a few honourable mentions.
Bronze Trophy: Horizon Forbidden West
The story of Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the most engaging on PS4, and Guerrilla Games expands on the premise by going truly off the rails. This is full-on sci-fi madness with invaders from outer space, new technology, and feats that are unattainable by any normal human being. The narrative has its believers, but it also has its doubters. It's widely agreed that the tales of the tribes and a lot of the side content are of a high quality, though, with stories worth seeing through to the end even if they're not related to the main plot. Even if you don't like where the story goes, there's really no denying the developer is all in on the tale, with a third game ready to rock and roll.

Silver Trophy: Trails from Zero
Trails from Zero may be an older RPG — first debuting on the PSP back in 2010 — but its narrative has a timeless quality to it, aided greatly by Falcom's trademark efforts in worldbuilding. The whole game takes place in and around the city of Crossbell, and over the course of its 50-hour runtime, you get to know the state's streets and buildings almost as well as its fantastic cast of characters. Zero does an enviable job of hooking you with personal stories before dragging you into a much more dramatic overarching plot. Engrossing stuff when it's at its best.

Gold Trophy: A Plague Tale: Requiem
For as unrealistic the premise of A Plague Tale: Requiem is, its story can hit brutally close to home. The brother and sister duo of Amicia and Hugo return for another life-threatening adventure that's utterly depressing at almost every turn. Nothing ever goes right for them, culminating in an ending that's sure to shed some tears. For as heartbreaking as it can be, though, Asobo Studio's sequel is completely gripping. Every facet of the experience is designed to enhance the plot, with touching conversations and emotional encounters. It's miserable just as much as it is enthralling. A fantastic story-based follow-up from the French studio.

Platinum Trophy: God of War Ragnarok
First thought of as a rebooted trilogy, God of War Ragnarok had the job of packing in two games worth of story into one gigantic experience. 40 or so hours later, Santa Monica Studio had told the greatest video game narrative of the year. It sees Kratos, Atreus, and friends combat the cataclysmic event that is Ragnarok as well as those trying to bring about its final days. A wonderful cast of new characters quickly become stars of the show, and with unforgettable moments that play about with your expectations littered throughout the story, the game surprises just as much as it delights. A truly great conclusion to the Norse arc of the God of War franchise.

Honourable mentions: Return to Monkey Island, Road 96, Stray, and The Last of Us: Part I.

My mate keeps harping on about plague tale..i have not played the first game yet but i'll get round to it eventually. I keep hovering over the purchase button on horizon fw but its really split opinions across the board so i'll hang on until its cheap as chips or turns up on extra. Voted other as elden ring is my goty without a doubt..lost my soul to that game..have a cracking christmas everybody..
@Northern_munkey Did Horizon Forbidden West split opinions? I thought it was well received by pretty much everyone.
@Northern_munkey 88 on metacritic, one of the highest AAA games this year, it's a pretty solid game that improves on the first game in almost every way, if you enjoyed the first game then you should get HFW.
Forbidden West’s story was not good. Not good at all. Gameplay during combat was great though, I’d kill for a linear game focused on big set piece fights.
@UltimateOtaku91 @Bentleyma judging by comments on push square by members i'd say that half of you loved it and the other half hated it..i've always listened to the views by the gamers on here rather than the reviewers personal opinions but this one game seems to me to have split the opinions..
@nessisonett Maybe you’ll get your wish with the multiplayer game that’s in development.
A Plague Tale no contest here. Wouldn’t say it’s the best game out of this bunch, but its narrative is easily the best here.
@Bentleyma I’m genuinely trying to work out if that’s sarcastic or not 😂
Horizon Forbidden West should be nominated for the worst story of 2022. As it completely killed any and all of my interest in the franchise going forward
A Plague Tale Requiem is at the top.
@nessisonett Nope! Maybe they’ll make it similar to Monster Hunter?
@Bentleyma isn't the new horizon online game meant to be an MMO? Or is that another project.
I still nominate Epic Chef PS4 as my GOTY 2022 as it has hilarious storyline and it made me laughed.
Watch from minute 26:27.
I didn’t enjoy the story in Horizon Forbidden West or A Plague Tale Requiem but I still enjoyed the games.
The story in God of War Ragnarok however, was everything I hoped it would be and more.
One of the best storytelling in video games ever.another masterpiece.word up son
I'm actually the opposite on Horizon's strengths and flaws with its story. The sci-fi bits are actually really great if a bit goofy at times! The tribe stuff is where I'm basically completely checked out outside of literally one tribe I thought was actually kind of cool in FW. I can't remember their name but it's the one Kotallo is from. He was also like the only character I liked too from the game!😄
I would have put Plague Tale at Platinum and honestly stuck Sonic Frontiers in over God of War but fair enough. Cool to see Trails from Zero in there!
God of War: Ragnarök and like the poll suggests, it's not even close. I'd have A Plague Requiem ahead of Horizon: Forbidden West but the results here are what one would expect.
I’d put Elden Ring on here for sure. The game easily a fantasied narrative, and it’s key to the exploration of the world too.
The fact that Road 96 is on this list and garnered zero votes…made me curious enough to buy it. ‘Tis the season for overindulgence after all!
@Bentleyma Well.. that’s kinda the opposite of what I’d want! Set piece fights lose all meaning if they’re repeated over and over, which is one of the problems with the open world nature of Horizon and also Monster Hunter for me. The opening hour of Forbidden West as a whole game would be fantastic. Smaller monsters along a wide linear mission area culminating in a boss fight against a much larger robot. That would be brilliant.
I think Angrboda was one of the best characters in GOWR. It didn't feel like some forced inclusiveness and her character was extremely well written and acted.
While everybody counts PS4 games updated to PS5 separately (still don't know why) than I must vote for PS5 Witcher 3 Complete Edition.
@Jaz007 The narrative of Elden Ring was my biggest issue with the game. I felt like it was completely non existent, similar to how I felt with Bloodborne.
Agree with almost the whole list except I would exchange HFW and Plague tales places because my god if it wasn’t for the main character’s relationship in plague that games story wouldn’t be worth seeing through it’s almost comical how mediocre the story is.
The story in Forbidden West is by far the weakest part of the sequel. After Zero Dawn, it was really dissapointing, because I enjoyed that story and they kinda ruined it to be honest
I would have to say Ragnarok over Forbidden west, simply for the conclusion. FW does have me hyped for the next game but thats 4 years away.
I have Played HZD including the expansion frozen wilds.I now understood what happened to the Human Race. From comments I have read on HFW, I have no interest in playing it.It does not seem to forward the Human Race Story any further.Plus I have such a backlog of other interesting Games to play.
It's a shame that Plague Tale always gets overshadowed. Phenomenal games that don't get enough attention, Requiem would take my platinum spot I think.
@nessisonett IMO, every open world game is better when its trimmed down to a more linear experience. I'd love a Horizon game that's more like a TLOU or GOW in nature.
I liked the story in Horizon. It was probably my PlayStation GOTY. 🤷♂️
@nessisonett highly highly disagree. the story is definitely great
@Northern_munkey listen to fan score on metacritic then which is far from split lol
@Korgon haha sonic had a story?
@middyone
Shockingly it did. And even more shocking I thought it was actually pretty okay! It's not the greatest story out there but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Absolutely nothing comes close to the story of The Last of Us. GOAT for sure!!
