You’re not going to believe this but eFootball feels better than FIFA 22 after its latest update. Konami’s disastrous soccer sim was the butt of all jokes when it launched last year, with turgid gameplay and some hilarious graphical glitches. But the publisher released its long overdue v1.0 patch this week, and the results are honestly more impressive than Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team. This looks and feels fantastic – better, on first impression at least, than even the excellent eFootball PES 2021 from a few years ago.
The changes are plentiful and wildly impressive. Passing feels faster and much more realistic, owing to alterations to the way the ball moves across the grass and through the air. It means moves like switching the play from left-back to right-wing feel absolutely extraordinary, as you slice the ball into the path of an oncoming attacker, and watch as it dips and spins perfectly to feet.
New mechanics have been incorporated to combat this, such as a shoulder barge which muscular defenders can use to dispossess an opponent. This kind of physicality is something we see in the Premier League and Champions League every week, but has been missing from franchises like FIFA entirely. Obviously you need to be careful using it, because if you overcommit then a nimble winger will dribble right by you – or you’ll give away an avoidable foul in a dangerous position. It’s a risk/reward system that adds depth to the flow of matches.
The same is true of the new Stunning Pass mechanic, which has a ridiculous name but attempts to replicate the kind of balls like Luka Modric made against Chelsea earlier this week. Effectively if you combine the R2 button with the pass button, players with the right attributes can play devastatingly incisive balls, but it comes at a high price: this kind of build-up play requires a more deliberate stride, which means you’re liable to interceptions.
As you can imagine, pulling off these plays correctly results in true highlight reel moments – the kind that will have you reaching for the Create button on your DualSense controller – and there are other mechanics like the Stunning Shot which complement this. You can, feasibly, play an outside of the boot pass into Cristiano Ronaldo’s stride and marvel as he knuckle-balls it into the bottom corner and it looks truly sensational – the dip and swerve of the shot perfectly simulated by the improved ball physics.
There’s so much more like this in the game: the artificial intelligence has been improved overall to work more like a unit and create space for attackers, and you can now execute more life-like one-twos where the AI will be smart enough to receive the ball in open space. You can knock on the ball when it comes your way in order to create separation between you and a defender, wrong footing your opponent in the process. And if you think all of this favours the attackers, new commands like team pressure will help you to snuff out promising assaults – at the expense of team stamina.
It honestly all plays superbly, but the downside is that the wider package still feels like a glorified demo. The same selection of licensed teams are available – including the frankly awful Manchester United – but you can basically only play friendlies with these. The emphasis is on the new card collecting Dream Team mode, which sees you recruiting players using in-game currency – rather than loot boxes – and levelling them up using training packs.
The cool thing about this system, from what we can see so far, is that each player has a base set of statistics that you can then improve to suit your playstyle. So if you want to play a more possession-based game like Manchester City, you can level up your players to be better on the ball – or if you prefer Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal physicality, then you can opt for stamina and rapid counter-attacks.
It looks like Konami will be launching some online tournaments in the coming weeks, but despite promises of improved netcode we struggled to setup a friendly against a stranger. We assume, with the gameplay significantly more polished, the publisher will now turn its attention to the game’s roster of modes, because right now this feels like a fantastic football game with very little to do in it. Master League will, supposedly, return at some point in the future – and frankly we can’t wait for that.
But make no mistake, eFootball is now a contender. In the span of several months and a single major patch, this title now comfortably out-performs FIFA 22 on the pitch. It’s now down to the publisher to give players a reason to kick-off in the first place.
What will it take to lure you back to eFootball, or has the ship sailed on this soccer sim after the sorry launch period? Make a tactical foul in the comments section below.

So... they actually turned it around? Nice.
@Voltan Yessir, feels fantastic to play!
So what modes are there to play? Never bothered with this due to the bad press and youtube vids did nothing to make me want to give it a go..so is it worth my time sammy?
Downloaded it yesterday but I haven’t had time to play it. After reading the article it sounds highly promising.
I’ll give it a shot. How bad are the micro transactions?
It still seems way short of Sensible World of Soccer greatness...
Gave it a going over in my lunch hour yesterday, I really had a lot of fun playing it.
I believe in the mission, free-to-play is the way forward. I’m happy to pay £10 to £20 for edit mode and master league and never play the awful online *****.
I’m amazed that EA can release the same game every year, and the same people pre-order it, and then spend months moaning about it. Crazy.
Well call me surprised I didn't expect this game to make such a turnaround.
@Eleventy8 i like my footy but i never buy fifa day one..i usually wait for it to drop in price significantly because i only play it casually on my own and i dont like the fut thingy..might give this a go as its free but i'm just wondering how much meat is on the bones?
Is PS Plus needed for online matches?
I’m sorry but even if they have some what fixed gameplay….. IF….. it’s still a shallow as a puddle.
I’m not buying into any hype sorry.
It has improved significantly. Now the gameplay is really nice. I guess the game would be ready by next season as the offline mode is really limited now. I play co-op with my bro (against CPU Man U) and it is currently not available. Even the offline mode is still very limited, how difficult to allow us to play more than 5 min. But I am really excited for the comeback. Never a FIFA fan.
It plays fantastic and the graphics are superb but it really needs content. If the Dream Team mode had offline play then I’d be set, the lack of lootboxes is brilliant.
@Northern_munkey Not much, mate. It’s still pretty much a demo. I don’t think they’ll have any meaningful content available till the start of the new season. If I was in charge, that’s the date I’d be pushing for to actually have something together to challenge EA Football Gambling Simulator, or whatever they decide to call it once the FIFA licence expires.
Take it for what it is, a sign of intent. I think once it gets into full flow, we’ll be back to the FIFA vs PES back and forth like the good old days!
@Northern_munkey Probably not. There's friendlies with several licensed teams and online with Dream Team, which is the Ultimate Team mode. And that's it right now.
@DominusPlatypus Nope.
@get2sammyb The most fun part is honestly just going into training as it lets you play as any team in the game, rather than just the trial teams. Once I set the camera to the Be A Pro one and selected Celtic, it was great just playing around with the engine. Holding R3 as the ball approaches to flick it up and then hit it on the volley never grows old!
@get2sammyb @Eleventy8 ok cheers for the info 👍
If they just made it so you could play friendlies and actually use all the teams and adjust the settings of the friendlies I'd be on board. Until then it's going to likely remain on the bench as I have little interest in playing online. Hope it doesn't take another 7 months for them to release another big update.
Kudos to you guys at Push Square Towers for giving it a day before you publish your thoughts.....if you go into training mode you can play all the teams in the game and there are no constraints to match length ....Celtic v Rangers was rather a muffled affair but I got a good feel for the Game......all offline.
..right. Let me d/l this. I swear if I get hooked like I was on PES 20 year ago this is on you Sammy…
What drives me crazy is that you still can’t increase the game time of 5 minutes.
Is there a reasonable explanation for this? They can’t be serious.
PES has always played better than FIFA, in my opinion.
Stunning Pass... Stunning Shot....yeah, it truly is a Japanese game.
"This kind of physicality is something we see in the Premier League and Champions League every week, but has been missing from franchises like FIFA entirely."
and I strongly disagree with this one, my Vidic and Chiellini partnership can outmuscle every single striker in the game, so we have been playing a different game I guess
@SystemAddict Sadly there's not enough to do for you to get addicted.
@kejsi-sensei I dunno, I don't see this kind of bundling players off the ball in FIFA at all. Not saying there's no physicality in FIFA 22 — there obviously is — but it feels much more viable as a mechanic here.
Subbuteo plays better than FIFA 22
@Eleventy8 I think any success on Konami’s part will lead to an even worse output from EA and we’ll see a fully monetised EA Sports Gambling Sim for ages 14 and down. Career mode? More like micro transactions mode. In fact why are they even called that, surely they should be called mega transactions seeing as they’re stupid amounts of money these days.
Great news!!! Roll-on Master League...
Hopefully not too long to wait for ML, but I did see something to suggest it won't arrive until the end of the year!
Pfft rolls eyes at comments that badmouthed this from day one, saying how it's never going to work, now all of a sudden they're all over this geedaaadehere!
Rather have a full priced game then that free to play/pay garbage but thats me.
@TheArt Dont worry i still hate free to play garbage and it was garbage and now its a good demo. You only get one chance at a good first impression.
@Flaming_Kaiser usually I’d agree with you, but free-to-play seems to suit yearly release type games. The incremental updates each year do not justify £60 to £70, and more for ***** legendary editions, or whatever. Launch the game free, make money with micro-transactions, for those that want to indulge in their gambling addiction, and then sell additional game modes, like master league, at a fair price.
Of course, I’m probably being way too optimistic, and Konami might completely ***** the bed. But I can hope.
@theMEGAniggle I think it’s likely that they have one eye on what Konami are doing. I’d expect them to follow suit, think how much MORE money they’d get, and how many more players they’d get if FIFA did go free-to-play?
If little Timmy didn’t have to save pocket money, or beg his parents to buy FIFA and could download it day one!
Remove the £60 to £70 entry fee, and the die-hards will think they’re saving money, whilst pilling that ‘saved’ money, and more, into FUT packs.
@Eleventy8 Sports game should be digital only just to stop the waste on plastic maybe make the game cheaper but i never liked free to play games. You always get reminded how much better a game would have been without the free to play monetization.
@Flaming_Kaiser That is a valid point, been proven time and time again that games are carved up and mechanics deliberately manipulated in order to coerce buying stuff to save time.
Again, I can hope that Konami hit the sweet spot with eFootball.
Anyone remember what that new alternative is that is in development? UCL football, or something like that?
Competition is always good for the consumer!
Too bad a lot of people who played it at launch will not come back.
@Eleventy8 I think it's possible it goes free to play after FIFA is over, so like you have FIFA 23 being a normal FIFA game and then instead of EA Sports FC 24 you have EA Sports FC being a free to play live service game which lasts multiple years.
@Grumblevolcano would make sense to make those changes then. I can imagine the EA PR spin, and ***** already.
Hope its better than Captain Tsubasa
Even on pushsquare I'm not free of this premier league physicality propaganda lol
A shame the original release was as bad as it was though because as it stands I can't believe it's actually decent.
Both sprint and alt pressure on the R shoulder buttons is killing me, never in any game have I had to hold those two simultaneously before.. assignable buttons are a must I can see it plays a good game; so frustrating.
/found it 😳 weird default.
@Bingbongboyo Honestly, they could just release an up to date version of that game and it'd be a day one, minute one purchase for me.
@RebRebel yes! Absolutely 100%! It was such a perfect game!
@Fragile haha! Yes, I remember that one too, and yes, me and my brother played it as well! Probably the best one until Sensible came along.
This is great news, I seriously thought PES was dead for ever! Will be downloading at some point over Easter.
If anything it shows how emotive and fickle the top commentators on any website always are, with absolutely no longer term sense. It was obvious from day ZERO, that live service was the right step to take on practically any annual sports game, on any sports game infact.
Anyways, 3-5 years later, this'll be wayyy better than any sports game ever released, simply because its live service. And eventually industry change will lead to similar sequels being released in the live service model, again an overall net positive.
It's the same nonsense with NFTS, you can't stop it and it will lead to a much more dynamic and interesting industry eventually, just like social media did with the internet, just like rampant mobile usage led to human rights crime footage. All I'm saying is, freedom and the ability to do what you want regardless of fickle, and short term public opinion (almost always meaningless) is what lead to an interesting and unique world.
Plays great!
But yea nothing more than a demo at this stage, can’t find any way to play a friend online yet.
Well i recently bought Fifa22 cause efootball sucked, i've been a fan of Pes for a long time now, but had to turn to Fifa since the disastrous launch of efootball.
Glad they fixed it, i'll wait till they add more teams, modes, and online multiplayer before i decide to re-download the game and give up on Fifa22.
Sucks to be me i guess
I played it last Friday, unless Konami have patched it again since, the stuff written in this article is either inaccurate, or the writer isn't a good judge of how a football game plays. It's still slow, passing is incredibly cumbersome and it feels like your players are running around in treacle. FIFA 22 is a still a far better game to play, despite the odd gripe with it.
Still utter rubbish
Sad, as some potential in the game engine but it is so far off being playable.
Freezes around 10 times an online match, that alone makes it unplayable.
Currently very little variety in play, one type of goal being scored over and over again.
Needs a lot of work to become playable. A shame because we need a decent football game, FIFA 22 is one of EA's worst efforts.
