Borderlands isn’t an especially funny franchise, so it’s perhaps fitting this Eli Roth (Hostel) adaptation lacks laughs. The most puzzling thing about this picture is how it managed to assemble such an all-star cast: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis all unite to attempt to bring character to some of the most vanilla personalities in video game history. They largely fail.
We were lucky (?) enough to be invited to an early media screening of the movie ahead of its US release on 9th August. Wading through crowds of overdressed influencers at London’s Leicester Square, we were ushered into Tiny Tina’s Funfair, where we were encouraged to toss boots at toy rabbits and attempt to win some bunny ears from a claw machine.

So far, so Borderlands.
Upon taking our seat, we sat through a little over 100 minutes of lifeless sci-fi action on a screen large enough to be visible from outer-space. For those not familiar with Gearbox’s game franchise, the best point of pop culture comparison is probably Guardians of the Galaxy, as a band of ragtag vault hunters embark on a mission to open a MacGuffin magical crypt in search of… Well, no one really knows, to be honest.

Lilith (Blanchett) is the main character, a flame-haired bounty hunter with a backstory that unsubtly unfolds. A chance bar brawl concludes with her being tasked with recovering Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), whose turn as the effervescent tween is mercifully less eardrum destroying than Ashly Burch’s version, and a little more likeable as a result.
Space marine Roland (Hart) is also trying to find Tina, and in the process has broken masked psycho Krieg (Florian Munteanu) out of prison. However, rather than return her to shady space executive Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the makeshift team decide to work together to track down a trio of vault keys themselves, in order to prevent the unscrupulous CEO from obtaining its contents. And that’s more or less it.

The group pick up Dr Patricia Tannis (Curtis) along the way, but she’s only really utilised to drop exposition when required. Krieg – who’s basically an analogue for Drax with none of Dave Bautista’s comic timing – may as well not exist, and Hart’s performance is surprisingly low on energy throughout. Blanchett, a great actress, does try – but even she can’t really save this.
Claptrap, a silly robotic sidekick, is introduced fairly early on to bring comic relief – but we weren’t even aware it was the always-reliable Jack Black voicing him until the end credits. There are a couple of one-liners that land, but the big gags fall embarrassingly flat. One scene, after being hosed with machine guns, sees him excrete the bullets. It’s funny because he’s pooing, apparently.

It’s obvious where the movie’s going before it reaches its anticlimactic conclusion, and a final face-off against villain Atlas lacks tension because he’s barely on screen for five minutes. Apart from some brief exchanges between Lilith and Tina, no one really has any motivation or personality here, they just shuffle from scene-to-scene because they’re paid to be there.
We were also surprised by how little the movie explores Borderlands’ main features. The games, for example, are loot shooters where acquiring different guns with unique statistics is a big part of the appeal. We’d expected the film to emphasise this, but the shootouts are largely forgettable affairs, chaotically shot to the point where it’s difficult to even follow what’s going on.

These action sequences are set to songs like Ace of Spades, making for the most predictable set-pieces you could possibly imagine. One scene, with heavy use of CG, sees Roland drive a car straight through a giant space bug’s throat. The execution is perfectly fine, but you’ve seen this kind of thing 1,000 times before.
By the time the credits rolled, we felt pretty empty inside. Borderlands’ problem isn’t necessarily that it’s bad – it’s just really bland. The jokes don’t really hit, the action’s meh, and the story goes nowhere. Blanchett tries and Greenblatt is fine, but no one else really turns up. It left us wondering: why does this movie exist? And, perhaps more pertinently, why did Roth waste an all-star cast on a series as narratively limp as Borderlands?
Borderlands will release on 9th August in the United States. Thanks to Lionsgate for the opportunity to see the movie in advance, and all of the snacks. Are you planning to see this film at the theatre? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thanks for reading everyone! Any questions, let me know!
Sounds as bad as the Monster Hunter film.
Where's the no, I just don't care about bad films option?
I love Borderlands, even 3 (gameplay wise that is) but this film looked dreadful from the very start.
Maybe if it's laughably bad I'd get friends and drinks to laugh at it with but it seems it isn't even that, like you said, just awfully bland.
As someone who's tried multiple times to get into Borderlands but the tone's always put me off completely, I found this review quite cathartic.
@UltimateOtaku91 The Monster Hunter movie was so boring I can remember me and my brother had a 20 minute conversation about Resident Evil about half way through. Not in the cinema, obviously lol
Maybe Illumination’s Fortnite movie will do better ☠️
The casting is all wrong, the script is awful, it's hard to care about a film that doesn't really understand that the game's popularity rests on the combination of gameplay and off-beat narrative. As much as I like playing Borderlands, there's no way I'd want to sit through all the ingame cutscenes and dialogue without the gameplay interrupting it for long lengths of time.
If only films based on established content were as well-understood and revered as Deadpool.
The best Borderlands game is the first in my opinion. After that they tripled down on the "wacky" humour and I couldn't enjoy them as much.
This obviously looked terrible, but apparently it's even worse than it seemed from the advertising. Overrated franchise with Reddit-tier humor. It's a "no" from me, dog.
I'm shocked lol but seriously movie is going bomb massively.
Borderlands 1 and 2 were it's peak for the traditional FPS, Tales of BL was brilliant for its story and that's where the franchise has ended for me. I was giving BL3 for free months ago through Prime and Epic and I just won't waste my time playing it
I can't imagine ever watching this movie because the only thing I like about Borderlands is the shooting, but I'm glad they toned down Tiny Tina at least. She's probably the worst character in video game history.
I like the Borderlands games well enough (2 in particular. That was the peak for series imo) but I never really had a desire for a movie based on the series. I actually don't mind Tiny Tina or Claptrap as characters but I also don't like them enough to desire to see them on the big screen. Borderlands main attraction is the great shooter mechanics in an open world game so a movie naturally isn't going to have those ingredients because...well...it's a movie.
Still, I might throw it on in the background when it comes to streaming services down the road.
It's so funny this even exists.
Blanchett gave an interview recently where she was practically asked "why did you agree to do this garbage lol"
and she as good as said "i was going mad stuck in my house because of the covid lockdown and they offered to fly me out to Hungary for a month. I didnt bother reading the script I was just so desperate to get out I agreed to it"
All the bad reviews are actually making me more excited to see it just to see actually how bad it is.
I have a Cineworld Unlimited card so all i have to lose is a few hours and who knows I might find it hilariously rubbish.
This isn't a Borderlands movie.
It's an unfunny SNL skit!
@WhiteRabbit He has not... and i kinda hope he never does stop, his film are not-great but I have a strange fondness for the resident evil films.
Their next film is called In The Lost Lands and has something about a magical girl want to turn into a wolf girl or something.
Great write-up. The attempted humor of this series hits the same as an awkward teenager trying to tell jokes he doesn't quite understand.
The casting choices are weird. I don't like when actors get loud in politics. I can only ever see them as who they are rather than their characters from that point on. Call it a personal failing on my part for being unable to suspend disbelief.
They got the whole thing backwards - for a film like this, spend heavy in the writing room and in production. Use nobodies and up-and-comers in the cast. An ensemble of recognizable B-listers probably bloated the cost to make this film when it was the most unnecessary expenditure and probably detracts from the experience overall.
The games never clicked with me so I’ll definitely be missing this one out.
"The most puzzling thing about this picture is how it managed to assemble such an all-star cast: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis..."
It's not the first and certainly won't be the last example of "paid enough to offset the shame". Not paid enough to pretend that it's a good movie or role, but when even the promotional posters, photos and official screenshots look like garbage, what can you do - a cast of solid actors (and Kevin Hart is there too) can't carry a bad project; if anything, having recognisable faces in uninspired cosplay just makes the whole thing more jarring.
@Mintie actually you’ve made me reconsider my post above. I love it when films are so shockingly bad! Find them quite enjoyable for that reason 🤣
A younger cast of unknowns with maybe some cameos of known acters/stars would be my preference. The cast used are too old except Tiny Tina, and I just can't help thinking of their previous stuff.
Overall I would rather see a movie that is a parody all the way. A movie like Airplane, Not Another Teen Movie, Kentucky Fried Movie, and others.
That sounds like absolute misery.
I'll probably end up seeing this as I have a cinema pass, but really my interest in the Borderlands franchise petered out by the end of the second game.
Here's the thing. You hate the games. So, why would we expect you to like the movie?
@jmac1686 I Platinumed the first game!
I've not read any of the comments, but this and a bunch of other reviews are backing up what we (as in those of us that are fans of the series) and most probably those in the outside that may have glimpsed the trailers were kinda already aware of... it was not looking good.
Pitchford (CEO of gearbox, for those not in the know) openly stated recently that if it wasn't for Tales of the borderlands with its narrative driven story (with some good, dumb humour) made them realise that a film could be done. Before he even said that, I kinda agreed - it could be a "good enough" comedy and action film that keeps the fans happy and the public in general exposed to a new franchise... but I can't help but wonder if tales of could have been used as an influence, and maybe done it as a limited episode series?
While it does have a lot of lore to remember and know, us hard-core fans will get everything with a wink and a nod, but those outside the bubble do need a bit of hand holding etc. For my argument, I'd like to hold up fallout as a good example.
I've dabbled in the games (finished only 4, from a narrative perspective, but played every other one I can), but the series was concise, with a new spin on the same lore to keep you wanting more (from the "villains" perspective, to avoid spoilers). Sure, it was great, but I wouldn't call it must see.... but I'm looking forward to S2... unfortunately, even when casting was announced with Hart as what I presume to be a 6ft (mininum) soldier and stating its a whole new story I was like "what?".
Sorry - babbling now, but just flesh out the story you have... start with b1, you already have part of a script to work from and by the time you get to the 3rd film (maximum), you've got the best game of the franchise and it's best villain.
There's source material there... and apart from what I've seen in aesthetics, not a lot survived the original... not to mention taking an "adult" game and making it tween friendly...
But yeah, sorry for long comment... hopefully it makes sense.
File entire enterprise under 'Stuff we did under lockdown we now regret'.
Three blockbusters this year had the post apocalyptic wasteland setting. Furiosa, Deadpool & Wolverine and Borderlands and it's going as expected. I just hope it doesn't outdo Furiosa at the bx office cos that will be a bit of an indictment of the movie going audience IMO.
damn that titles harsh, BL2 is a hall of fame game . but this movie is just another case of corpos being out of touch and ruining established media franchises for “reasons” .
kevin hart as roland , and the old cast in general will always be a red flag and stain on this film
"Thanks to Lionsgate for the opportunity to see the movie in advance, and all of the snacks"
I'm betting it's the first and last time you're ever invited to anything by them if they see this bloodbath of a review, at least you got tasty snacks 😁
@Tecinthebrain 😂 Yeah, was thinking the same!
@Tecinthebrain At least Sammy can't be accused of having his review been bought. Personally I think he was only there to show off his tatts judging by that first image lol.
Exactly what fans expected.
The fact Gearbox was so heaily involved and they think this is good enough to release is all you really need to know about the writers at Gearbox.
Compare this to Fallout or TLOU, other adaptations with strong ties to the actual writers... night and day.
Always looked terrible, always was going to be terrible. I dunno, was Uwe Boll not available? Not supporting that sell-out Jack Black ever again either.
What film did Eli Roth make for him to be able to then go on a possession of crap films leading up to Borderlands that no one other than Randy Pitchford wanted making. Surely not Hostel?!?
The cliché dictates that one ought not to judge based on a cover, but it's a damn good filter more often than not.
@DonJorginho was wondering the same. Love the games but this movie just looks horrible. Something tells me there’s not a scene where characters argue about the Color of their guns, compare them and cuss each other out over it. Even a five minute segment like that would be better than whatever is on the menu here.
And so the terrible video game based movies trend continues, should be a surprise to absolutely nobody
I'll wait for this to come out on some Streaming Service. Going to the Cinema here in Ireland just isn't worth it anymore.
As Bland As the Brand It's Based On? i would say boarderlands is bland at all
My daughter cut her video game teeth on Borderlands and Mario Kart and since there isn't a Mario Kart movie opening this weekend I'll be going to Borderlands...lol...
I've never liked Borderlands, so I'm glad to see I'm not alone in that. This article feels like I wrote it. The "humour" is painful and the characters are either so annoying that you wish you could manually delete your memories of them, or just embarrassingly try hard "badasses" that feel like a 14 year old who collects katanas created them.
“The most puzzling thing about this picture is how it managed to assemble such an all-star cast.”
Well. It’s not exactly a modern day all-star cast. Just some actors past their prime buffing their pensions.
@Thatguyoverthere I had no idea SNL did funny skits anymore!
Cate Blanchet is enough to put me off. She's a great actor, but I can't imagine she did this for any reason but the paycheque. Given her comment to Margot Robbie about heavy metal I'm surprised she lowered herself to videogames.
Glad to hear the film is generic as we would have guessed. Even with a subscription to see any film I want I'll give this a pass and go and see Deadpool again.
I don’t at all agree that the franchise is bland. I love the art style, and the gonzo guns, and even though BL3’s writing sucked, BL2 was actually decently written. Also, I appreciate that a game in this genre is going for a lighthearted tone, even if the jokes are extremely hit and miss.
Saw the trailer once streaming and in a theater before “Deadpool & Wolverine”, which is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in my life so I’m the target audience for this type of film, also a big Mad Fax fan, and “Fallout” on Amazon was great, but this looked so meh. Like “ meh” was invented knowing this film was coming out. I mean I liked “Jumanji”, and this kind of looks like they were going for “Jumanji 3”, but they put out all the scenes they cut off the floor rather than the actual movie. And yes I got all of that from the trailer.🤷🏻♂️
@get2sammyb Were people walking around that snack area making comments like: “Well it could have been worse, we could have been at the Willy Wonka Experience.” 😂
So does this mean you’re back? I’m going to miss the booth babe pics. 😁
Removed - flaming/arguing
A Borderlands movie, that nobody was asking for, sucks? I'm in complete and total shock.
With how expensive moneys are to make these days, it's difficult for me to understand how these absolutely bomb, booooomb movies get a green light. Like...none of us are in the movie business, but most (all?) of us knew this was a terrible idea and would tank lol
thanks for acknowledging that borderlands brand of humour just isn't that funny.
@tameshiyaku and this!
@get2sammyb are you left handed? Random question but I noticed your watch is on your right arm lol and the Borderlands logo behind you isn't mirrored
Also while I largely agree borderlands as a series isn't funny or even necessarily fun, Tales from the Borderlands is actually the funniest game I have ever played!!
@thechetearly Just watch The Producers to understand why these movies are made 😂
@Nakatomi_Uk The actual game itself feels fantastic to play (BL3), but that really is it's only redeeming feature.
"As bland as the brand it's based on."
Them's fightin' words!! I love the series. The characters and the unique skills and skill trees are great. Honestly, I don't like all the driving around, but aside from that, the games are great. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a nice spin-off that cuts out a lot of the stuff I don't like, while also catering to those who play tabletop RPGs.
ive played all borderlands gams. and i couldnt tell you any charecters or story. its what cool gun am i getting next
Interesting review. I've had this movie firmly in the "If it's on a streaming service and I'm bored, maybe" bin since the cast were revealed. Kevin Hart is a good stand-up comedian, when it comes to films though he needs a partner to riff with (think Hart and Dwayne Johnson), otherwise he's just a short, loud man. Cate Blanchett was actually the big head scratcher for me as she's old! Why cast a 55 year old actress in a role that would be better suited to someone in their mid-30s unless you're doing it for the star power? Blanchett recently did an okay turn as Hela in the MCU, and I assume someone figured MCU = Popular, so having an MCU star = great for the movie. Now, I'm not the biggest Blanchett buff, but aside from Hela, all of her roles have been the elegant (see also - stiff and/or rigid) upper-class female. That's not Lilith! I don't know the other two actors but Jamie Lee Curtis is the only one here that would actually catch my interest, especially after her turn in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. So to read that the movie is bad is unsurprising.
It's a movie based of a game franchise, they are rarely ever good. Look at Street Fighter, Doom, Super Mario Bros, Rampage, Warcraft and a dozen others.
With that said I am still going to see it.
I had a feeling the humor in the movie would fall flat.
@DonJorginho This!! Why isn't there the "I don't watch bad movies no matter what franchise" option?? Also, honestly, who.......... EVER........ thought this would be good?? This was DoA the second it got announced. And why are we talking up this cast? I genuinely think this would've been better with some new, up and coming actors and actresses. Are people still into Jack Black and Kevin Hart???
So from the review, it sounds like all the best bits are in the trailer? Typical.
I'll definitely watch it, when I don't have to pay extra to do so. Sometimes these kind of dumb movies can still work if you're in the right mood.
Couldn’t get into the games, so there’s no chance I’d watch this and also Kevin Harts in it aswell, so that guarantees that I won’t be watching it.
Accidentally orders bland film based on video game franchise. (11)
At least it makes for a good cryptic crossword clue.
This month, the only movie that i will watch on the theater is Alien Romulus.
Video game movies and tv shows always stink, borderlands is about finding flirty talking guns and tipping moxxi so any movie will always be doomed to fail
Kevin Hart in films I avoid like the plague you know its going to be rubbish
Looks like a ‘Concord’ cutscene. 😂
Bored-erlands
Well colour me surprised..I don't agree the borderlands games are bland and I'll still watch the movie regardless as I quite like bad b-movies as they provide a bit of a giggle in the crappy kind of way. I knew pushsquare were going to rubbish this as it was really obvious from the build up to the release. Very predictable as always.
@janineking Will copy that one!
One scene, with heavy use of CG, sees Roland drive a car straight through a giant space bug’s throat. The execution is perfectly fine, but you’ve seen this kind of thing 1,000 times before.
What a time to be alive.
3% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I think I'll take the reviewers' word on this one.
Kevin Hart is not funny and everything he does is horrible
I think I will just wait until this inevitably ends up on Netflix and then just watch over drinks with friends as we riff it.
The casting is absolutely horrid, almost everyone is too old for their character. I'm trying to understand who was this made for? Why not at least go with a young vibrant cast even of they are unknown actors instead of a couple of these washed up actors 🙁
Why bring the games into it? Other than it being headline bait? The film will find it's audience just like the games have for the better part of two decades.
The vote needed an option of "love the game, no interest in the movie".
"Borderlands isn’t an especially funny franchise", okay, i've read enough from this review. I don't care about the movie, but this sentence alone i know now that this review is a piece of *****.
@daveofduncan you bring the game into because it's based on said game ffs
I have an Unlimited sub at Cineworld, so it’ll make sure I’m covered for this month. Might not have it that much longer anyway if they’re starting to close cinemas.
If it’s as bad as I’m hearing, I’ll take my Switch* and chip away at my backlog.
(* This article appeared on NinLife as well, get offa me.)
*insert Patrick Stewart mild shock meme
@WhiteRabbit I love Hellboy, but hate the David Harbour one with a vengeance
The fact this was, and was always going to be, a stinker... is not shocking. Movies based off shooters are going to be extremely hard to pull off. I never saw any sign that this would be worth even a streaming view. Some games are better left as games.
Maybe they should have required everyone to play through B1-3 in order to “get it”. Not highlighting weapons, planetary destruction and the infamous slot looter shooter machine is a crying shame.
Not a fan of the series. Even tried Tiny Tina's first spin-off/DLC game because I figured I'd give it a shot being a big Horizon fan (naturally then being an Ashly Burch fan) and didn't care for it.
I was hoping this would at least be entertaining though, as it was more the gameplay than anything else that I disliked. Can likely cross this one off the list then.
They are really trying to milk this franchise for every cent it's worth. It peaked with Borderlands 2.
@Kanji-Tatsumi Well said. In the wake of ever-worsening sequels, it's become common belief that the series relies on crude humour and shouting. It's been forgotten that the first one actually had a bit more about it.
At least the Ratchet 2016 movie while bad it had some moments in it besides the bad childish humour and Rainmaker being a Illumination wannabe. The game was.... passable, half the original game, less funny, more modern and boring but has good Clank levels, more racing events like Size Matters did to fill in each version of the track, changed a few levels in fair ways, the later game's strafe/level up system (boring skill trees system again). But an eh game. With RA being not what I wanted but still and ok Tools/Nexus return to form.
Even the Ratchet movie goes here is Zurkon (sigh), the RYNO & other weapons. Borderlands not having a bunch of crazy weapons with different elements, mods or manufacturers signature quirks makes no sense to not be in the film.
I assume the actors do try but have rough material to work with. That and yes a teen actor familiar cast makes more sense/humour. A tonally different Guardians without crazy weapons is fair to say.
BL2 had Handsome Jack. NO idea 1, 3 or Pre-Sequel I forget. Weapons carry the series. I'd take a Brothers in Arms movie but ones like it already exist.
This, I mean. If it works with the series that's fine but it doesn't translate to film at all. Then again I didn't think much of the Fallout tv series either I think the game does a better job and the tv series is very tonally not great at all. But that's as someone that hasn't played the games but owns 3 (bought it recently out of curiosity & with a GOTY edition why not for cheap to try it out and get the different perspective of the series) or 4 (because others tried it and fell off). I always thought the alternate history angle was cool like Resistance/Wolfenstein.
Borderlands series has it's best in the gameplay, story is usually very eh/gets job done & dialogue got worse each entry. So why Gearbox wanted a movie like this, forget differences between gamers & casual audiences/want to push an IP so hard & go oh this will be fine.
Vault Hunters, Lilith & Roland, it's all fair to the 2nd game I think they were trying to capture more (makes sense with what audiences are familiar with) as Lilith was a playable Siren character in the first game while more story relevant in 2 and 3 as her own character, don't remember in Pre-Sequel.
So got the main characters, probably got the bad tone/dialogue of the 3rd one. As the 1st one is very GOOD in not being as annoying as the later entries humour. Just doesn't have the gameplay tweaks of 2 onwards.
Uh there is a reason this movie may work in the gross out movie era or audience, or particular audiences for teens but otherwise it's very pathetic tone/themes/fair worlds and fair gameplay that in a movie just doesn't translate it's humour or world well to other mediums/audiences.
Tiny Tina to me was a good way to remix the series but even still it only does so much. I was never a fan of Tina, the actor is great in Mythic Quest Raven's Banquet the MMO company Office clone or voicing Aloy or other characters. But never cared for Tina in Borderlands 2 and while with the Dungeons & Dragons approach of the BL2 DLC or Tiny Tina the game is good to present the world and use her character I do think the dialogue lacks.
3's is horrible & Tiny Tina's is only better because of the world remix & maybe lower age rating but eh dialogue just without swearing sure, whatever. There was a few moments but dragged out quest dialogue, typical difficulty.
Damn, pretty harsh review. I mean, im not surprised the movie tanked, but BL1&2 are pretty amazing games.
Does everything have to be anime gacha game for pushsquare staff to enjoy it?
Is it as good as 1993 Mario Bros movie though? Although that got negative reviews, I actually enjoyed that Bob Hoskins film.
Love Borderlands a lot, but this was just a bad, bad, bad idea.
I'm not a Borderlands fan. Besides the Presequel. Made by an Australian team and it shows. It's Mad Max on the moooooon.
Anyway, I tried to like BL3, but the cacophonous stream of constant quipping in the world was way too much for me. My wife even put down her book and said "What is that you're playing that won't shut tf up?!?"
@species yes. Everything has to be an anime gacha game for Push Square to enjoy it. Rekt.
@Oppyz666 that's the thing about comedies. There's only so many ways to say "that's not funny," but you KNOW you are right, and explaining why something is funny just makes it worse.
@LikelySatan I had a hunch!
@Kanji-Tatsumi Borderlands peaked at 2 for me.
This review doesn’t surprise me at all, I knew it was going to bomb after all the promo material released. I cannot stand Kevin Hart either, guy is always playing the same loud role
@Diogmites It’s not the writers. It’s the people above who make the decisions and the writers have to adjust. After listening to Gary Whitta’s KindaFunny episode the other day, it’s clear writers don’t always have a lot of say on the direction of stories and characters.
@Legacy2K I was lobbing shots at the writer of the review, not at the writers of the film. And i was jabbing for attention.
I understand that writers are chronically penned in by people who have the creativity of an inanimate object.
Saw the film last night at my local cineworld, hadnt seen any reviews and I'm a bit surprised at all the hate. It was tamer than I expected from Roth, trailer made it look like it might be a bit more over the top but it was an entertaining, stupid but fun action movie. It's not going to win awards or be on anyones Top 10 list for the year but it was definitely worth my time.
@Diogmites Lol why jab for attention though?
@Legacy2K Why ask if you don’t know?
The gaming series is not "bland" 🫤 it's actually one of my favourite loot shooters, the movie on the other hand is a different story, I'll watch it on prime or something just for the laughs I guess
I've only played the Telltale Borderlands game and loved it. If it's anything like it, I'm sure I'll enjoy this movie. Most people are just too harsh nowadays.
@Tecinthebrain washed up actors? Sure, Jan.
@Darude84 gotta love ageism. Both Blanchet and Jamie Lee Curtis got an Oscar last year.
I enjoyed the first 2 Borderlands games. But I needed a sequel after those two to be something more. I hear its just more of the same in Borderlands 3, well actually worse in terms of comedy I hear.
Finally someone who recognizes Borderlands for the shallow, painfully unfunny series it is.
And no, not even the gameplay is good.
There's literally nothing good about shooting mindlessly at goons just to get a better weapon every 2 minutes.
@Diogmites ?? That’s literally the reason why questions are asked in the first place, mate. People tend to ask questions when they don’t know the answer.
I'm sure the movie isn't good, but it sounds like the reviewer hates borderlands with every fiber of their being. They even were trashing the vip event and what the people were wearing there 😂.
@naruball Then they’re even more done than I already feared 😋
@Darude84 well, if you say so, it must be true.
Way to immediately alienate a massive chunk of your audience in your first line. One of the most opiniated reviewers I've had the misfortune of stumbling upon. The movie sounds like it sucks, the games on the hand have sold over 80 million copies and are beloved by their fanbase. Just because it isn't funny to you, doesn't mean the chaotic humor of the games doesn't do it for the rest of us. No wonder your site traffic has consistently gone down year over year.
Yeah, the story and the actors may suck, but how well does it run? Does it have a performance mode (60 FPS)?
I know where the exit is...
@nessisonett Wait,
This movie alone made Jack Black a sellout?
@Deityjester So they can’t ever be good?
@Arminillo Based.
Hollywood videogame movies are nothing but trash.
I hate Hollywood.
I haven’t played the games but these movies suck cheeks. Why Hollywood?
@HiNess Dumping his comedy partner of 30 years in order to get parts like this and Minecraft are what make him a sellout.
@nessisonett You think he genuinely dumped him permanently rather than just take a short break from the band?
@HiNess Doesn’t matter, he put his own image above Kyle’s. That’s unforgivable. I mean he also works with a ‘charity’ that promotes eugenics but plenty celebrities have been caught out by Autism Speaks.
@Mintie I wish people were this excited to support smaller studios who produce actual art instead of this rubbish.
@Rgeneb1 “It’s not going to win any awards” comments always prevail for bad movies. 😂
When do y’all stop taking the slop?
@Torque It’s just as bad.
@HotGoomba “Reviews don’t matter”
“What were they expecting, citizen Kane”
Same sh*t everytime. Tired of Hollywood’s BS.
@Tasuki But why?
@HiNess Sounds good to me.
@HiNess to be fair, there isn't much that I don't watch at the cinema and I have seen some absolute stinkers, but I've also seen many more gems that I wouldn't see if I didn't have that card. I lean towards favouring the smaller, stranger films but I'm also not so far up my own arse that I can't enjoying mindless entertainment as well.
I will never understand how Eli Roth keeps getting work. His movies are absolute trash every time. When I heard he was director, the terrible trailers made sense.
@Torque You have a weird way of having it good.
@nessisonett What should JB have done?
@HiNess Are you trying to say, Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 isn't the best Mario Bros movie to date? Cause if so, you're totally wrong.
@Torque I don’t like any videogame movie.
You’d have to be really dumb to enjoy them.
@HiNess LOL what are you doing here then? Contradicting yourself. 😂
Does she wear those silly ears for the entire movie? If so then thats enough to give it a 01/10 for me.
Regardless of how bad the movie is, this person really really hates Borderlands.
@DonJorginho The games are excellent, anything but bland
@Torque So I can’t be here for a review?
@HiNess✋
@HiNess Watched it. Enjoyed it. Nothing special, but not as negatively exaggerated, as the sites made it out to be. Feels quite like a 90s movie and that's a good thing. Would recommend. I even enjoyed it more than Furiosa. So there's my review.
