December's PS Plus Essential games have been announced, and as always, we've got three titles to scrutinise. Although to be fair, the immediate reception to December's offering has been quite positive — at least, from where we're sitting.
The headline act is undoubtedly Mass Effect Legendary Edition — an excellent remastered collection of all three original Mass Effect titles. That one alone is arguably worth this month's subscription price — especially since it'll take you a good 60 hours or more to see the trilogy through in its entirety.
Commander Shepard's intergalactic adventures are flanked by the divisive Biomutant and the brand new Divine Knockout. Obviously the jury's out on the latter, but from what we understand, Biomutant has received a number of updates since its disappointing PS4 release in 2021. Worth checking out, perhaps.
Anyway, we want to know if you're happy with December's PS Plus Essential games. Vote in our polls, and then explain your stance in the comments section below.

If i get the time il try out Mass Effect. I platinumed Biomutant on ps5, has its issues (mainly the narrator) but i enjoyed my time with it. Doubt il play divine knockout tho
mass effect trilogy 120 hours of awesomeness. and yes while mass effect 1 is a game from 2007 and still despite the remaster shows it clunkyness the story characters and writing are still there and as good as ever.
tip if you dont get on with mass effect 1 go to mass effect 2 they are very different games and arnt the same you might like mass effect 2 its where the series really hit its stride
Delighted with mass effect trilogy - great month!
Also really pleased to see so many positive comments for a change on the ps plus articles - must be that Xmas magic….. 🎄
Best month for essential
I own two out of the three, but for anyone that doesn’t own them, it’s an awesome month.
Of course. It's Mass Effect.
One of the best months in years!
Not happy per se since I’ve already completed two of them but it is a good selection of games!
I want everyone to at least try Mass Effect if you haven't already.
Did the world go crazy out of the sudden? This must be the very first time I see more people saying positive things about PS Plus than long, resentful complains. By the way, could someone check if the Poll is working properly? The "Yes, very happy" seems to be on top now.
The trilogy is a pretty neat set of remasters, strongly recommended. Since I already own it, I'm looking forward to check out Biomutant on PS5.
35 to renew essential over black Friday....
these 2 alone make it worth in money and game terms
The only minus I have with this month is Divine Knockout as we’re essentially getting a paid first season early access version, which then goes FTP after season one which kinda seems like a bad choice for a PS+ game given you won’t even need it to download the game in the future.
Only reason I voted biomutant is that I have that basic EA access package and Mass Effect is on there.
Good month.
so we gotta wait til christmas every year for good ps plus games 😂😂
@avatarian more like did sony go crazy , they release dog**** , obscure indie garbage all year that only a handful of people can tolerate . they’re just in the christmas spirit and decided to give out presents . these are presents this month , not monthly games , don’t be fooled
Mass effect 2 was one of my favorite games of the PS3 era. Not sure how well it'll hold up but if I do play I'll probably go full renegade for once in these games.
Never played mass effect 1 so this is a great one for me
Definitely happy.mass effect legendary edition is a good choice.i will download mass effect legendary edition and i will download biomutant.word up son
Finally! Best batch of plus games in years. Sony finally did something right!!
I think this might be the most positive PS Plus poll we've ever done.
If I were to download Mass Effect Legendary Edition and after I have started to play it, then save, then end PS Plus, would I be able to continue the game if I buy the physical version or do I have start all over again?
@avatarian here you go: this is the worst possible month ever. Anyone who wants Mass Effect and Biomutant would've already bought them by now. PS+ should be giving us 3 AAA day one PS-exclusives every month, anything less is just Sony being lazy.
Having said that, I'm looking forward to both Biomutant and Mass Effect, that's pretty rare for two of the games to interest me.
Super happy
And my PS+ Renewal is on Dec 26. Not that i had any intention of canceling it, but simply reinforces my decision of keeping it.
Damn, that many people didn't have ME? A little surprised.
@KnightRider1982 The bottom line is it's the same game, so the save data is the same. Should just work.
First essential games I'll actually play since what? A Plague Tale: Innocence? Definitely happy 😁 (I tried Tony Hawk's for a minute, but the nostalgia didn't hook me, I think that was an essential)
Never got round to Mass Effect, and it's definitely something I'm hyped to try, an RPG with actual consequences, good writing and characters, so I've heard, so yes that's perfect for me. (I'm getting a bit disappointed that Skyrim doesn't really have consequences for my actions, which I'd gotten used to with games like KCD and TW3)
But I'm also kind of excited to try Biomutant, just as a casual side game, which I desperately need, after playing barely anything but massive AAA games from various generations, in the last couple of years alone. It won't be as good as Stray, or maybe even BugSnax which have been my chill games for this year, but it might look nice for a change. And I've not seen much beyond a character creator, which is a feature in games that I can usually squeeze multiple hours from anyway, even if the game doesn't hook me afterwards 😅😅
Happy despite already having got Mass effect 2 and 3 on PS Plus back in the olden days
@Mauzuri on ps5 its not bad at all, the animation on the main character is a bit stiff ,but the games ok ,probably about a 6
Mass Effect is awesome but I doubt I will replay it. I'm definitely interested in trying Biomutant though.
@Danloaded I got the platinum too but was pretty underwhelmed by the game. It is possible to pretty much turn the narrator off though which was very welcome!
Turning off the random gibberish off the characters was very welcome too.
I don't mind seeing more AA games like biomutant on PS Plus essential. Since it's usually games I was unsure about so get to try out.
That and it not only gives the Devs some revenue. But it also gives the IP a boost so more people might buy the sequel. (If they decide to make one)
Bought biomutant a while ago in the sale but haven't got round to playing it. Have mass effect on EA play, what's the best way to switch it over to PS plus?
Yes, very much yes. Very happy 😊
These actually provide some value (although PS Plus Essential could have easily been just an online play tax).
Yes. I already bought Mas Effect LE, but for those who did not, it's heaven!! Biomutant is interesting. For me it's a solid month.
On a side note: Ys Lacrimosa of Dana (PS4) is locked to me as of today. Looks like the bug returned. It vanished from the PS+ Extra list again...
Platinumed ME2&3 but have never played 1. Gonna do a full playthrough. It can fill the gap Calisto Protocol was meant to fill.
Finally some good games.not that crap indies that some dumb kids like. Or some grow up man that live with parents on the basement, like it. Just saying
A little sad and surprised to see so many people still think indie games are always bad for whatever reason. I thought we were past such nonsense but i guess not. Some are good, some are bad just like AA and AAA games.
But on the topic of the plus games yes this is a great month.
I picked Mass Effect for the poll even though I bought it full price when it released last year. Not in the mood to replay but it's just that good of a game that even replaying some time in the next 3-5 years is more exciting a prospect than anything offered over the last couple months of PS+.
@Milktastrophe @nomither6 Thank you, now I know I am in the right timeline. Balance has been restored. 😂
Is it just me , but does the Woman in Mass Effect remind you of Monica from Friends !
Best month for ages..mass effect and bio mutant for me but they will have to wait for me to finish what i've started..
My subscription expires on 16th December and I won't be renewing. I never really bother with the free games. I only play GT7 daily races. Tbh the daily races are more times not fun, that fun these times. I want to play single player games from my backlog.
ME: LE and Biomutant were the only two new games I bought in all of 2021. So, very good selection, but nothing new on my end.
With Mass Effect right - I get it - it’s a great game etc. it has been on EA Play (and therefore game pass) as well for quite some time though …
I've played the whole ME trilogy serveral times on PC back in the days so i'll pass this time. I wanted to try Biomutant when it released but after some gameplay footage I convinced myself that it is not a game for me. Now that it's free maybe I'll give it a shot
I played Mass Effect 1&2 when they came out, and finally played ME 3 earlier this year when I bought the Legendary Edition. I loved all 3. I hope maybe a few people will play them for the first time and be blown away like I was
I'm happy about getting to play Biomutant for free! Already own Mass Effect thanks to a recent BF sale.
One of the best months in recent memory. This is what PS+ monthly games used to be like a few years ago. Bravo.
Mass Effect's already on EA play so this is a pretty bad month.
Can't wait to replay Mass Effect. Haven't played them since PS3
Is there any way to jump into ME3 and tell it where you were up to in the other two? I played the first two on Steam back in the day, but then the third required Origin, which at the time was essentially malware.
I'll probably give Biomutant a go at some point, but based on reviews my expectations are low.
All in all, a great month for some, and I'm mostly happy for me.
I haven't tried any of the mass effect trilogy ,would have done though if I'd not always been side tracked ha ha,but now fantastic news on essential this month and will defo get into mass effect ,a fab month just with mass effect trilogy ,let alone the other two games as well very pleased
is mass effect legendary edition also ps5 upgraded.
They have included early access to a premium edition of a free to play game, a remake of an old trilogy and a game that got 6 out of 10 aggregate that you can already find in the bargain bin.
And this is a good month?
@theheadofabroom
I believe the Mass Effect trilogy does have the comic things that let you pick at least the big choices in previous games if you don't want to start from the beginning.
They had to utilize this back in the day since PS3 started on ME2 since ME1 was a timed Xbox exclusive at the time. Then there was ME3 which had a Wii U version but no ME1 or ME2.
Bottom line I think you should be okay to jump into ME3 right away if you want.
@PALversusNTSC technically its aps 4 game but think of it as a ps4 game with a ps5 patch as on ps5 it plays at 4k60 or 1440p120 and you wont get performance like that from any ps4 console version
The problem here is not the games. The problem is I already own them. You’ve got some great games in this months selection!
Should be fun to get the most disastrous ending possible with Mass Effect.
@Bunchesopuppies that's what I want to do. Renegade FemShep stirring things up any way she can.
Great news for those who haven't had a chance to play ME yet... less so for those looking forward to Biomutant! Had to stop after an hour due to the very childish nature of the narrator.
I mean, getting three Mass Effect games at once would be pretty damn neat on its own. Here's to it all controlling well. Even Biomutant might work to tide me over until the long announced Switch port on the same conditions.
@SleepyNick and "old trilogy" is a contradiction here? Gamers sure enjoy assuming that if they have played a game before, then everyone who's anyone has. And outside explicitly multiplayer-focused titles that need all the attendance they can get, how many publishers are even motivated to allow a sufficiently new game on a service where at least a third of the userbase will get it for the fraction of the launch price?
It is December 4th 2022 and we still have not received Knack 2 as a psn+ title, this cannot continue.
@nhSnork I don't see how it's a contradiction. ME is the best game on the list for sure but it is still a 10 year old trilogy in 4k, it isn't a remake like demon's souls or TLOUP1. Never claimed that "everyone who is anyone" has played ME. You are right, not everyone has played ME trilogy but a hell of a lot more people have played ME than say... literally any other game that came out in the last few years that isn't a re-release. I'm not asking for brand new games on the service.
There are lots of games to pick from the last few years, plenty of which aren't re-releases.
Tried ME a few months ago and couldn’t get into it. Not interested in the others.
@Michael2008ish That’s wild; I feel like the combat is phenomenal in DeSo, just like everything else in the game (on both systems).
Edit: Well, except level 5-2…
@Michael2008ish Interesting. Perhaps I adapted quickly. Or maybe it depends on the class you pick? I know my good buddy thought the combat was super responsive, too. Maybe we haven't played enough more responsive games?
I think its a great month. I've played Mass Effect a billion times but happy to see people who havent tried it play for the first time.
I think theres great value in having middling games that get sort of 6, or 7 out of tens scores, like Biomutant on the service to get them into more players hands.
If you're the kind of person on a limited income/have limited time for games, you'll never try these games but I think this affords the perfect opportunity.
@trev666
Hi. I had a great time with Mass Effect 2 but Damned if I'm going to start grinding and mining again. That ruined my time on the game. If I didn't have a life to be getting on with maybe I would have enjoyed it more.
@nathanSF the mining was a pain but you only have to mine the rich planets to get all the stuff you need ignore all the other planets . if you played it again they just give you loads of everything upon starting up so you dont have to do it again.
they got rid of the mining in mass effect 3
Mass effect LE omg lucky people us folks first time round played through it and those of us who coughed up for DLC got the other half of the missing game DlC cut content if you ask me regardless of timed release.
@ATaco I keep saying I'm gunna go renegade shep but never do lmao
@trev666
Great. thanks for the update.
@Bentleyma same here
@PALversusNTSC no its not
@nomither6 seems to have become the norm since mid ps4 life cycle
@J2theEzzo If I am not mistaken, you can turn off the narration. Unless I am thinking of subtitles.
