Good month for me, looking forward to The Settlers, Cat Quest 2, Decieve Inc and Crime Boss.
One of the weaker months for me. That's fine, though. I have too much to play anyway.
Even though I have Cat Quest 1+2 for Switch, I'll download the PS4 versions and snatch up those easy Platinum trophies.
I’m honestly never disappointed in the monthly releases. I tend to buy all my games, so when something does release that I haven’t bought yet, it’s always a surprise.
Should have included a none option for the premium games, this selection is horrible.
Honestly, unless we get a big shake-up with a Sony showcase that makes the value for PS+ be worth the price hike, my yearly sub expires in a month and I’m letting it lapse. I loved having Dave the Diver, Tales of Kanzera, and Animal Well on the service, but honestly, I would have saved money by buying the games rather than having a premium sub service.
At the end of the day, I realized that before Dave the Diver, the last game I played on the service was Sea of Stars. Thats half a year. For $160 or whatever a year, that just doesn’t make sense financially for me. I found out I’ve played 5-6 games a year on Plus, so that price hike makes it more expensive than buying the games. Cautionary tale of the sub service, I suppose.
Really quite a rubbish month all round in my opinion. Could have done with another gem like Animal Well to bolster the line-up
I'm one of the few that still hasn't played RDR2 because I've been waiting for a PS5 version lol (unfortunately 60fps is important to me). But apparently my absolutely nothing special PC I bought myself for work last year should get 60 with ease. Wish they'd just put out a freaking PS5 patch already tho.
Also, I can for sure see myself packing the bubbler and checking out the Cat Quests at some point 😺
The selection isn't great but the issue is it's less than half the amount that has been taken off
Premium is fine this month, but Extra is complete trash.
I don't think there's been a month before with such clearly defined negative poll results...
I don't think I've ever seen positive poll results for these PS Plus articles.
Pretty great games this month. I don't know, I've always found that "free games" and catalog games in PS+ subscription were really great for me. Yeah, not the latest, but often greatest.
Unfortunately, this is my last month. I don't plan on renewing my subscription now that it costs insane amount of money, even cheapest tier.
Online should be free on all consoles. I'm fed up paying for nothing.
I was interested in the two city/town builders but they seem to be reviewing either average or bad...but I guess it won't cost me much to try them if they're free. Maybe I'll be able to get a couple hours of enjoyment out of them.
2Xtreme, G-Police & Worms Pinball is pretty dope in my opinion.
I just wish third party PS1 releases would also support trophies. Not a dealbreaker, but the grey "-/-" looks a bit whack on the game list on the account.
Not really.....I missed the days of the occasional brand new day 1 release from Sony.
RDR2 is a very pretty game with lots of memorable moments and fun content. Problem I have with it (and indeed most GTA/Rockstar games) are the horrendous finicky clunky controls, it just never becomes intuitive. Looking forward to trying the Cat Quests - personally I find even with the odd disappointing month the PS Plus to be tremendous value for money, really don't understand the moaners here.
I may find the time for Cat Quest 2. The rest ... Meh.
@Gamer_X Animal Well, (on console) Dave the Diver, Tales of Kenzau, Foamstars? Those were all really recent too lol.
I'd probably try Tunic through essentials, but RDR2 hmmm. If there was a 60fps patch no brainer, but this time around I do have a OLED and it has been 6 years..
RDR2 is for me probably the greatest video game ever made and one of the best pieces of media ever made and since I've done it twice on Xbox and once on PC it being on PS+ is a great excuse to play it again 😅
Watch Dogs is a guilty pleasure. Issues aside, still a great story. Then I went and bought Aiden for Legion just so I could here his thoughts as I played again. 😁
I lost a copy of Red Dead 2, so for me it's great.
The Settlers looks interesting, but I can't wait to play G-Police again. I loved it in the 90s and haven't played it since.
If you for some strange reason haven't played RDR2 then it's an incredible month for you, I suspect the majority have so for me it's one of the worst
Red Dead is a nice get well after release, but I already have it - though I still havent gotten to it. I might give the Cat Quest games a go, otherwise nothing I'm tempted to try.
@DTfearTheBEARD just out of interest, you'll replay these games that you already own on another system just so you can get a trophy??
That and it gives me an excuse to play them again. Good timing, too. Since Cat Quest 3 will be released soon.
@Silenos Totally agree about the clunkiness. Played GTA5 for the first time last year, and I still have nightmares/chuckles about attempting to ascend a crane. Apparently, my guy thought launching himself off the side of it was the fastest way up. 'Twas not.
There’s some miserable sods here 😝
@somnambulance I’m not trying to disagree, at the end of the day each person needs to decide if the value is there for them, but I think it sounds like you’re getting enough from the sub to warrant keeping it. A full year of Extra actually costs $135. At 5-6 games played per year you’re pretty close to the break even point (assuming an average of $20 per game or so). The added value of cloud saves, special discounts, and online play would certainly push it over the edge. Not to mention, I’ve yet to pay full price for my sub, usually twice a year you can get it for close to $100-120 for a year (Black Friday, Days of Play), which makes it even more of a value if you play in the neighborhood of 5-6 games from it that year.
Really Animal Well was available in May, which is excellent.
@BeerIsAwesome maybe because it's the second time they've added RDR2 and most of us played it the first time. They shouldn't have to reuse earlier games as the biggest announcement of the month.
Not really interested in any of the games this month.
I've actually come to the conclusion that Extra's just not worth the money for me.
Most of the games I want to play aren't on there so I end up buying them, and that doesn't leave me enough time to play the ones in my Extra library.
I'm switching to Essential when my subscription runs out in a couple of months.
Going to play Watchdogs and Crime Boss.
Will also try Tunic from the Essentials list.
Extra and Essential are combined in what you pay for each month. You only need to play 1 or 2 games to cover your monthly fee.
@somnambulance
As most things in todays gaming, it's all about quantity.
More games, more hours spent in games, more weapons, more loot, bigger maps, etc.
It's such a breath of fresh air when unique games like Returnal release. Only really good thing Sony's done this generation tbh.
I'm not sure what people expect from extra. There just games being added.
Its the same when its the ps essential games.
I'm never quite sure what people expect.
Because if its anything you really like, you've more than likely bought it anyway.
So everything released it poor and if you already have it then its also a poor month.
Qlot of games are going to be out onto these services if they failed to give everyone a go and see if its a game for them.
For extra its a good selection of different genres.
Stranded alien dawn is an absolute blast if your into survival, base building, resource management and Tower defence. Its a unqiue twist well worth peoples time if they like those types of games.
The rest are good in there own right.
The big let down and it is every single month and I dont get this whole premium service of adding games like extra.
Its ment to be a premium offering, the reality is premium should just have all the games released instead of the way they are doing it and release the actual classics and not all this shovel ware.
Premium should just be a collection of the greatest games of the past.
Extra is the rotating door of different games.
No Sony first party games should ever come off. Just like amazon or netflix always have there originals on the site.
Premium should of been fully stocked and ready to go at release and yet here we are waiting to see what gem or rubbish old games they can throw together.
I thought those were ps plus monthly games that you could keep at first. Then noticed the Extra. If it was the 1s you could keep then yeah would have been good.
@Specky @Th3solution I would maybe agree with you that the value is still there if I used Black Friday deals, but I’ll see if I feel that way without it for a little bit. I mean, I may get the cheapest version of Plus, now that I think about it, simply because I’ll need to play online for Erdtree, so hopefully there’s a summer sale before that comes out. But part of the value proposition is how good the games have been too. Realistically, I have to sit down and think about which PS+ games I actually played, and then I sort of realize that they’ve mostly been games that came and went without much impact. Stray, Dave the Diver, and Animal Well are the three I can say I’ve really enjoyed. Put those ones all together and that’s certainly less than a year’s subscription. It’s the same issue as Gamepass otherwise where I feel like it might save money sometimes from preventing me from buying games sometimes. I think about Tchia, for instance. I’d have certainly bought that one, based on my excitement for the game and the reviews. An hour or two into it though, I really disliked the game, so thanks PS+, you saved me $30-40 on a game I probably would’ve preordered or bought day 1 and wouldn’t have seen red flags ahead of time. I dunno. I buy new games regularly and the subs haven’t slowed that down so much.
I dunno if I’d say Returnal’s the only good game Sony’s made this generation. I generally disagree with the remake, remaster, sequel, and live service strategy they’re starting, but we’ve had a couple gems and Sony did have a lot of good third party deals. People can say what they will about Forspoken, but that game was also a breath of fresh air for instance.
Not happy with month of May selection. Not happy there are not that many ps1 and psp games for premium. Looking for my favorite psp game.Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
Removed - disrespecting others
@somnambulance
Would that be a good thing though that it's a demo in a way?
Because for me, if I don't like the game after a couple of hours, it might really grow on me further down the line. So I buy the games I really want and I can try the interesting ones I get through Plus essential. More than enough games for me to justify not upgrading to Premium.
Also Returnal is definitely not the only good game, but it reminds me of pure passion projects Sony would bring out during PS2/3 days. The games have been a bit soulless since PS4 imo
Nothing for me this month; I haven't played any of the games but there's a reason! Red Dead will be good for some folks, lots of meat in that game. Not for me though
@somnambulance That’s fair. And I can tell you are actually thinking of it analytically rather than knee-jerk reacting to a bad month as so often happens with players in the comments and aftermath of an announcement.
And I can definitely agree with you that there’s sometimes value in avoiding a cost as well, by having a chance to play a game and then just drop it if your not enjoying it without concern for having spent extra money on it. For me that happened to an extent with Avengers and Death’s Door, for example — Games I might have bought but got to try on PS+ and find out that I didn’t really like them. Interestingly, I had the opposite experience with Tchia — I most certainly would have never bought the game as it didn’t look like my usual cup o’ tea. But I went anhead and tried it and thoroughly enjoyed it as a charming and unique cultural experience unlike anything I’ve played, so PS+ helped to expose me to something I would have missed.
So for every ‘meh’ game I’ve played through PS+ (Power Wash Sim, Humanity, Slay the Spire, etc), I’ve discovered some real gems I love (Midnight Suns, Stray, The Quarry, Disco Elysium, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Inscryption, etc), some of which I hold as favorites of the generation.
But yeah, I still buy plenty of games too. And so the issue does become a time management one. I have a large backlog of owned games, and so having a library of 400 PS+ Extra games does complicate things from a time-management standpoint. But in the end, it makes sense to keep my sub for me personally, because it helps diversify me as a gamer and I know I always have something that will resonate for me to play.
@Th3solution @Specky Yeah, I was sort of seeing it as a demo service to games to an extent. I still contemplate purchasing Stray though. When my son is old enough for that one without needing me to play it (which he’s getting there), I’ll get it for him. You know, I do think AstroBot was sort of a passion project too. The types of games I miss from Sony are ironically the ones that I feel would fit the service to a T. Sony used to give away games like Flower and I feel like that’s the perfect type of thing to put on Plus. Give it some low stakes Sony efforts that wouldn’t sell otherwise and release them Day 1. Stuff like Bound, Tren, etc. I miss passion project Sony for sure. It’s what kept me in the Sony ecosystem in the PS3 era. Despite its success for most, the PS2 era put me off games for a bit and I took a few years off “new” gaming and went retro for maybe 3-4 years. It was the passion projects that got me back in. I’m likely a minority in that, but the unique games keep me as invested as the AAAs.
Yeah, no, it’s not a knee jerk. In fact, I’ll probably download RDR2 and play it for a good hour or two before my sub expires. Love the game, so I feel like this isn’t actually a bad month, aside from trading Final Fantasy games off the service (wouldn’t be surprised to see them pop up on Gamepass, given the timing, too). It’s just expensive and I’m sort of tired of paying for things just to have them. And, yes, time is also an issue. I don’t have the luxury of time to play as much as I’d like, but even so, I felt like I was in a gaming slump in March and April and weirdly enough, I think it was because I didn’t purchase anything! I was playing Dave the Diver on the sub, but it feels different to play on a sub a bit. I dunno. There’s got to be some psychology to that. It’s something I’m feeling in general with subs. I’ve started buying movies again and all that jazz. Just a tone shift in my own way of existing perhaps, exemplified by an attempt at valuing my time more maybe.
But realistically, if they made a showcase and said “Parappa 3 will be on PS+ Day 1, didn’t know we were making that, did you?” I’m resubbing for the year. Lol
@BeerIsAwesome you ever see “I Think You Should Leave”, the bit with the never-talks guy, and the ‘frat boys’ show up and say, “we’re gonna go nuts in there!”
That’s how I imagine the bored kids who got GTA free a few months ago approaching the online world of RDR2
@somnambulance There is definitely a psychology to the whole “own vs. rent” situation with consuming media. I think that when one invests in buying something, there’s a higher chance that you’ll stick with it, and potentially enjoy it. Whereas consuming something via a service makes it easier to fall off if the early moments of the game (or movie, etc) doesn’t click. Theres are a few games that I probably didn’t give an adequate chance to like maybe Death’s Door for example because I didn’t invest money into it. And the opposite is true for a game I bought on release like Returnal where I wonder if I played it through a service if I might have given up on it early and missed out on what is one of my favorite experiences this gen.
And totally with you on the passion projects and smaller experimental titles. Unfortunately no one buys them. So they would be great for PS+, and I agree with you that it would be a great place for games like Bound, Concrete Genie, Astrobot, Erica, Flower, or the Team Ico games of yore. Stuff like that. I wonder how the trajectory of Dreams would have differed if it was given out from Day 1 on PS+. It’s easy to say in hindsight because we know the game sold very poorly, but it could have had longer legs if it was in more people’s hands. But unfortunately the sting of that game’s commercial failure is likely to give Sony cold feet about investing in any passion projects in the future.
The ones that looked most interesting are PS5 only and many of the others have already been on ps plus or ps now. The 3 premium games are a waste of time. 2 of them I think I still have for ps1 and the other doesn't look interesting.
Still no knack 2...
Not a fan of the selection, but would recommend Cat Quest I and II to anyone who hasn't played it.
