It's finally here. 12 years after the release of the original Dragon's Dogma, Capcom has launched Dragon's Dogma 2. A much larger sequel built with a budget that probably dwarfs its predecessor's, the action RPG has been met with incredibly positive reviews — but it's also taking a beating over poor technical performance and its implementation of microtransactions.
We brought both of these issues up in our own Dragon's Dogma 2 PS5 review, but we concluded that it's still a borderline masterpiece in how it pushes players to explore its open world. "Fans of the first game shouldn't even begin to hesitate; this is everything that Dragon's Dogma wanted to be back in 2012, and it's utterly glorious at its best. But even if you're newly Arisen, this sequel stands alongside some of the greatest open world journeys in gaming," we wrote. "Just fix the frame rate, and this is an all-timer."
But we want to know if you're playing Dragon's Dogma 2 now that it's here. Vote in our polls, and then explain your stance in the comments section below.

Gonna wait for PS5 Pro before I touch this.
Still on the fence. I’ve got too caught up in the discussion about performance. It looks like a real problem, and is clear to see in videos, but equally I’m sure it rarely matters when you’re actually playing. Besides that it looks excellent.
I've been playing it for a few hours now and I love it as much as I loved the first but I already knew I would. The frame rate is not really that much of an issue. Do I notice it? Yes but it's really not as bad as its made out to be. Maybe the vrr on my TV is helping. The mtx's are non invasive and to be honest that's another issue that's blown out of proportion. Looking forwards to spending the rest of the weekend playing it.
I think it's pretty great myself. That said I'm sure a lot of people that didn't know what they were getting into are going to hate it lol.
No as I have open world burnout lol
Installing now. Just gotta wait till after tea (dinner if you're not from up north) to play.
Didn't like the first one and this looks a heck of a lot like the first one again, so I'm going to pass. Some of the monsters look cool though
Should be a ‘Yes but I’ll wait for them to patch in 60fps’ option.
Bought it last night but just got to wait for it to arrive now, I may not start it straight away as I've still got FF7 ReBirth and Trails of Cold Steel 3 to finish, and my game rental place have just sent me Endless Dungeon and Unicorn Overlord so il be busy for a while.
Unlikely I'll buy it any time soon I've still never really played the first game despite owning it on Xbox and Playstation.
Want to but holding off. Decided to replay the first one on the steam deck as I never actually finished it first time. Loving it.
Gonna wait till the discounted complete edition, if I even still interested by then.
Gotta finish Rebirth first, but yes, I'm absolutely playing it. This is my second dream-come-true game to come put this year.
Decided to skip it for now because Helldivers 2 got its claws in me.
Ive played the first one but then just stopped after an hour or two. My copy of DD2 is arriving today so hopefully it doesn't happen the same way. Im really hyped for this just because this is the fully realized version that the devs wanted to make
@Splat What makes you say that? Genuinly curious.
Finally I can vote something useful on these lol.
Been a while since I've played something on release. Been a while for a game this good to come out for that matter.
Once in a blue moon type of game.
Many big publishers just can not release games that come even close to this. It's a goddamn shame how many games we get that just do not meet their potential.
Kakarot, literally every Assassin's Creed game almost, Bathesda's pathetic games, Sony's games are also lacking as of late.
The worst is that people just keep buying them and worse, defending mediocre games. We'll never get a good DBZ adventure game and if you criticise it, the weebs come out in droves to protect them.
Welp saves me a backlog
If you got wrapped up in the online drama, you played yourself. DD2 is a gorgeous and engaging spectacle. Playing this one on PC, no problems aside from stutters in the cities. It runs better than Elden Ring or BG3 did on my PC at launch.
I'm tempted to at least install it and just play around in it for a bit since it's just staring at me on my wall of games but I really want to finish FF7 Rebirth first
Besides by the time I do get to it maybe hopefully they'll have put out a patch to help performance just a teeny bit or announced one
I feel like I’m the only one that didn’t even know the series existed. Might look into it if it’s really that good. It looks a bit The Witcher-y from what I’ve seen?
Became really interested when reviews dropped. This kind of adventure exploration from Elden Ring and BotW but in a more traditional RPG experience sounds really fun. I’m too busy with other massive games tho, so I’ll probably pick it up when it goes on sale for $40.
@BIG3 The game doesn't hold your hand at all. You just have to figure it out. There are so many things you can do that the game never tells you. The NPC's can be very vague when giving you a quest.
Plus I hope you like walking. Because you are going to be doing a heck of a lot of it.
N.i.c.e. dragon dogma 2 is a excellent game.a masterpiece.dragon dogma dark arisen is one of my favorite video games ever made.word up son
@Splat I see. Sounds like nothing that will hold me back when I eventually decide to play this game. And walking a lot in games is something I really enjoy (looking at my 2x Death Stranding plat, lol).
I will unlock my willing to play this game behind a micro transaction that Capcom will pay. Let's play the same game, it's a question of respect, right?
The gameplay videos look really bad compared to the prerelease footage we were bombarded with.
Combat looks clunky and the climbing on big monsters looks like something from early 2000s game. Not to mention the insane frame drops and microtransactions.
I was looking forward for this game, but for now its hard pass for me.
@Angelus3K The CPU will be only 10 % faster, so expect 39 fps instead of 35 fps. Later patches should have a bigger effect on the performance than the Pro.
Don't really like how the exploration sounds. I'll pass on this one.
Sounds like it’ll be really enjoyable, but I’m going to give it a month or two when they’ve released a couple patches (and I’m finished with Unicorn Overlord)
@Loamy Do you know if the game offers a compass option over a mini map? It's just from the way the exploration sounds it just seems perfect for something like that.
No I got enough other games to play at the moment and I didn't really like the original from what little I played of it. Plus the performance issues are a turn-off. Maybe sometime in the future though on a sale.
30fps and the like look atrocious to my eyes, and imo 30fps should have died a long time ago, and with this gen it nearly did. PS5 has not magically lost power since launch, and if developer wants to achieve at least fairly consistent 60fps, they will, and I will never again support any game that doesn't.
I looked at the DLCs. Restore the dead to life. What does that mean? If you die, you have to pay real money to come back to life?
I've been playing or thinking about DD2 since midnight on Friday morning. It's incredible. Coming on a quarter of a million people playing on Steam at the moment - I think that Dragon's Dogma just became popular, and I couldn't be happier about it!
Yes and I'm bloody lovin' it!
i am playing it for about 10 hours and i regret of buying this ***** from 2010.
Anyone who isn't is conning themselves out of playing a really fun game tbh. Never seen so much scrutiny for a game that plays as well as TW3, Elden Ring and any other fantasy RPG.
For all those that are though, we need more of you in the forum section sharing some non spoiler experiences of your adventures so far 😁
We await your tales of aught
If it had even a steady 30fps, I'd be all over this but a wildly varying uncapped fps is just unforgivable, all for PS4 Pro level checkerboarded 4K visuals? This should be an all-time epic, and it probably will be, but at the moment, it's a sign of how the PS5 isn't a panacea for all. Even the XSX apparently has a better frame rate - maybe those teraflops count.
@Nepp67 in the same boat. Played maybe 3-4 hours of the first one and was frustrated by some of it. Maybe a time and place thing. This looks more like I’d get immersed in it, and I’ve also found sometimes a sequel speaks to me in a way the first one didn’t (BOTW vs Tears of the Kingdom).
@Splat when you say walking, let's clarify that you actually mean "fighting in the general direction of a quest or maybe something that looks like it might be worth exploring in the distance, which is probably another fight" 😁
@CutchuSlow I would imagine it would revive the npc's that get killed because once they are dead that's it...unless you buy this magic potion for £2.99 👍
I plan on picking it up, but I have some other stuff to get through including games that were bought for me at crimbo... Hopefully by the time I get around to it there will be some good performance updates.
I mean...I am only like 2 hours in if so but I am failing to see what makes it one of the best rpgs. I like the original game a lot, but this one looks and plays like an outdated last gen game so far. Combat is super clunky and it's easy to die to basic enemies because it controls so poorly. The visuals are not so great, performance is bad.
Also I actually don't like to explore a map with no idea whatsoever of what could be around the corner and I much prefer traditional "ubisoft" like maps because I don't have that much time to play and wandering around empty roads for nothing.
The tutorials are super overwhelming, tons os systems, including boring ones like weight.
I hope the game opens up and I actually get some good combat skills because so far the game is being really mid for me
Watched and red a lot of reviews, "Before you buy" type videos, and opinions, and the micro-transactions fiasco.... - some labeled the game "bad" some stated it's "good".
Realized I'm getting nowhere fast, and only procrastinating what was becoming obvious...
Put an end to it and got the game, to actually play it and see for myself.
Ordered it, it's already installed, will dig into it this evening.
@Angelus3K won't make too much of a difference I think because the game is CPU limited and the Pro I think has only 10% more power in that regard
@Mikey856 lol same with me. Im just having burned out from any open world game nowadays. To coupe with the feeling,im playing simple point and click game on my deck. Maybe im getting older and lazy 😂
Definitely will play this game but not on launch. Maybe the next couple of month. Let capcom fix the framerate and any issue first
@CutchuSlow i think those dlc is for the dead npc. Not for your character
@Northern_munkey @amatmulisha
Oh I see. But kinda ridiculous to pay real money for it.
I'm waiting for a deep discount on this one. Hopefully it will be in a better performing state by then.
I completed the original 4 times. Dragon's Dogma 2 is everything I wanted it to be and more.
Yup. Took me an hour or two to get to grips with it but I’m rolling now. I can see myself sinking a lot of time into this game.
If you’re avoiding because of micro transactions you’re missing out. They literally make no difference to the game if you ignore them. Performance has been ok so far but I’m still early on in the game.
Yep and its fantastic and easily a GOTY contender for me based on what i've played. Yes performance isn't good but other then that its pretty much everything i wanted in a sequel. Combat is great, the Pawns are better then ever and the world big, dense and feels so lived in.
@UltraPunk Almost like cross gen really helped with getting 60fps and now that current gen only games are coming hard the 60fps only dream is well that a dream.
Nope, done paying to play unfinished products. They are supposed to invest in QC and optomization not charge their fans for it alongside Mtx bull$#! /.
I want to play it, but I want this trend to stop more and the only way for that to happen is to stop condoning it out of a fomo.
Busy with Rise of the Ronin atm, which I'm quite enjoying! I will get round to DD2 tho.. Wasn't that impressed with the 1st DD, played about 7 hours then couldn't be bothered to go back to it if I'm honest, so I hope it's more engaging than that! lol
I would have been interested in it, but the performance and frame rate drops are massive red flags for me, hopefully it can be improved.
Playing on PS5
So far so good
MTX wasn’t even noticeable and not in your face. Though I don’t like that it’s an option I think the reaction is overblown.
Biggest gripe is the frame rate which is pretty bad in my opinion. Mess with your eyes bad.
Putting the MTX and dips in performance aside. This game is goated. Dragons Dogma is in my top 3 so there's no surprise I'd love the sequel. It's a shame that it's blown up for all the wrong reasons though, even if deserved.
Just waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail. I've taken a few weeks off gaming, so I'm ready to dig into this!
Quite a lot of voters waiting for a sale for this one. Not surprised I'm in the same boat with the performance issues being especially poor It is easy to see why.
Question is when will I get the time to play it. Rebirth and BG3 have my attention and I'm barely half way through the first and just in the third act of the other. Stellar Blade and now FFXVI DLC next month, Paper Mario in May and Elden Ring in June.
@UltimateOtaku91 Have fun with Unicorn Overlord! Played the demo recently and it was an absolute blast. The art style is simply incredible too.
I'll buy it next year when it's finished.
I apprehensively got this for PS5 thinking it would look like a slide show but I have been pleasantly surprised. I have zero regrets now and it's worth every penny of the £60 I spent on it.
@CutchuSlow
@Northern_munkey @amatmulisha
This is an optional DLC as the wake-stones can be easily found in world during gameplay and can be used to revive NPC's and the Arisen. There are around 1000 unique NPC's in the world and if they die it's a permadeath unless you revive them at a morgue or in the world where they were felled.
A lot of misinformation about the MTX has been going around by people who have not played the game so watch out for that.
@Darylb88 I'm not remotely interested in the mtx's. It's just shortcuts for people who don't have the time or just want to blitz through the game. I'll take however long it takes me. Thanks for the heads up anyway 👍
Will pick it up if/when capcom improve the performance…
i will buy DD2 when the price of the game will equal the number of fps in combat
Already had to do the roundabout to start a new game. Managed to get lost at night by a campfire.
Have also drowned, got stomped, slimed, tarred, set on fire, fallen, eaten, drooled on, stabbed, sliced, shot. Good times. 🤞
@playstation1995 not even close to be called masterpiece.
Lol overrated Capcrap game with mtx and terrible performance, another remake by Capboredomcom,never again will I buy Capfartcom game day one.
@Darylb88
Optional or not, it's still not a good look to have as dlc. It makes them look greedy. And I see it as cheating, if you're just going to pay real money for stuff instead of unlocking yourself.
@Radekbejbl1 It's just "Capcom." It stands for Capsule Computers. They've been absolutely crushing it for years.
Your comments always sound like you need a vacation and a snickers.
@Angelus3K It probably won't help too much in terms of frame rate. The game is CPU limited and the PS5 Pro CPU is not getting an upgrade. They are just giving it an additional boost to get 10% better performance out of the same CPU, which would translate to about 2-3 extra FPS.
@LikelySatan can u give me u snickers ? Please,prettyyyyyy pleaseeeeeeee...
Depends if u dig their remakes,I don't little Nicky sooo snickers ???
@Radekbejbl1 eh...k.
Pro version for me. It probably won't change the frame rate too much but in 6 months it'll be pretty polished and you'll likely be able to play at a higher resolution. Or hopefully a locked 40 fps mode is implemented by then
@CutchuSlow I just wanted to ensure you had the correct information regardless of my own personal feelings of mtx.
Having fun but geez this game is out to kill me. Got 4 big encounters in a row in what looked like a desolate area.
@Darylb88 oh ok. Thank you
@Angelus3K playing on the series X right now, plays fine so guessing will be fine on the PS5 also! But will replay through on the pro when I get that as dd2 is my kind of game
@Dirk_Diggler it is already finished 😂
@CutchuSlow they are additions to what you can already get in game, to my knowledge none of the paid for items or currency are exclusively paid only
@Splat I thought that, from the awful presentation to the way you need to actually hunt for content, a lot of people won't like it.
@neillaw They are all in game and all but one of the 'items' are incredibly easy to get apart from the porthub, they're pretty easy to get and you don't need many.
