It's been close to seven years since Dynasty Warriors 9 came along and soured Koei Tecmo's cult hack and slash series. But with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the Japanese publisher has breathed new life into the franchise — a fresh start that was so desperately needed.
"In many ways, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the series at its best," is what we wrote in our Dynasty Warriors: Origins PS5 review, awarding the title a 'great' 8/10. "Origins isn't just some water-testing spin-off — this is both an evolution of the formula and a fantastic realisation of what Dynasty Warriors has always strived to be," we concluded.
But now that the hack-and-slash madness of Dynasty Warriors is back on the menu, are you actually playing it? Are you a returning fan, or might this be something completely new? Vote in our polls, and then choose a lord to serve in the comments section below.

Play dynasty warriors from 2 to 7, got bored as the a lot of characters had the same moves etc, mostly clones of each other and didn't even use the fight weapons . Heard the new one is a lot better, ordered it from Amazon buy not getting delivered til next week
I played some of the earlier games on a sort of buy 1, miss 1 basis (including at least 1 SW game), but I stopped buying them due to 1) technical performance which seemed to be getting worse, and 2) increasing boredom of the series which seemed to need more and more ridiculous amounts of time every game to get characters to a decent level.
The change in direction for Origins and decent enough performance/graphics (at least on Pro - I have no idea on base) have attracted me to buy this one.
I like the crossover games like that one with various Koei Tecmo characters, or the Zelda and Fire Emblem games. But I’ve never played one of the actual games in the series. If those are any indication, these are just amazing games!
Mouso (or however it’s spelt) always look like a ton of fun to me, until I’m playing them. The genre just isn’t for me.
Yup, just finished the Yellow Turban chapter. Absolutely one of the best Dynasty Warriors entry to date, especially once you hit the massive warzone. It's like a great crossover between OG DW and Total Wars. Having 10,000 units on the map clashing with each other managed to bring the chaos of war while still keeping the frame rate above 60.
One of the best and smoothest combat in the franchise too, absolutely love the change in musou and true musou attack to give it more gravitas.
Played the demo for a while. I can see the appeal but it's not my thing. Just too repetitive and the story/dialogue is akin to sixth grade fan fiction. But hope everyone else enjoys it.
I like Warriors games, but I usually play them with my wife. The lack of multiplayer makes this one less appealing.
I'm not planning on getting it any time soon, but anything can happen, lol
I’m very tempted but have too many games on the go already. Looks great thought!
I love these games, but I’m not sure I can quite fork out for it this month, plus my backlog is screaming at me. I’ll look forward to it in the future though
No, i'm not gonna played Origins although it looks kinda fun.
And my experiences with DW series was DW 4, Samurai Warriors 1, and DW Gundam 1. I kinda enjoyed them since it's like beat em up and i love Warriors of Fate / Tenchi wo Kurau from Capcom, which is a small portion of Three Kingdoms story. But i never a fan of DW series.
@Dragon83
8 was the one that stopped with the clone weapons. Probably the best one. 😂
The only musou game I have played was P5S and I didn't enjoy it all that much.
I used to co-op them with my brother in Ps2. Fun memories. Haven't played any of them in many years now, but the demo for Origins really won me over (until Lu Bu showed up and beat me into the dirt.)
I am actually looking forward this. I will be waiting on a sale.
I only play these games if I want to fall asleep on the couch.
I did love the fire emblem ones, not sure if the main series is for me
If ur tempted steam has it $20 off right now
Having played some and always enjoyed them, I'm somehow happy for all the devs that the reinvention of their formula worked out so well!
I would've got it but Tales of Graces came out at the same time
Played the Fire Emblem and Zelda games. To me they were okay due to tie with the main games-IP. Not a huge fan, but im guessing they play a bit differently on PS5!.
No interest to be honest. I like some spin-offs like 'Persona 5 Strikers' or 'Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity' but I have no interest in the main series.
I was going to but Canada has literally no physical copies in stores, Best Buy doesn’t even have it online. Our supply chains are a joke these days. I was going to go for it but I’ll wait for a discount.
Only when they patch the Chinese dub in for the PS5 version. Ridiculously because it’s available on Xbox and PC…
Dynasty Warriors 2 is one of those games I remember playing with my friends - and not even the full game. We wore out the demo disc because it was so novel - a big battlefield, fluid controls, tons of enemies. I collected them for a while including all of the Xtreme Legends games until around DW 5 when I just stopped having fun. I did hang on to my copies of Dynasty Tactics 1 and 2 (underrated PS2 strategy games, lots of fun).
Played the demo of this right away - and boy, it really hasn't changed much except for looking sharper. I think the friendly AI is a bit worse and the enemy AI is a bit better because I ended up losing the battle through not fault of my own.
I appreciate the series for what it is, but this one isn't moving the needle enough to be a buy.
Yep, but damn it turned into a brawler at the last battle with the Yellow Turbans.
If I wanted that stuff I'd play Street Fighter or whatever the modern iteration is.
Cool otherwise but busy on other games atm anyway. Didn't hold my attention for long.
@IntrepidWombat @IntrepidWombat Loved the Tactics games, shame they gave up on that. Guess they didn't sell well.
