It's been a while since Sony's last general State of Play livestream, but the company returned with nearly 30 minutes of PS5, PS4, and PSVR2 announcements for its fanbase this week. Since we've already gotten a good look at the headset itself along with its next-gen controllers, Sony lifted the lid on some new PSVR2 games and updates throughout the showcase.
They included Resident Evil Village PSVR2 support and a No Man's Sky patch. There was also a new look at Horizon Call of the Mountain.
Alongside the virtual reality titles were further reveals from third-party publishers like the Resident Evil 4 remake, a new Final Fantasy XVI trailer, a release date for The Callisto Protocol, and the unveiling of Street Fighter VI.
That's what Sony had to share this time around, but what did you make of the show? Was this the greatest State of Play presentation yet or were you left wanting more? As usual, place your vote in our poll and share your overall thoughts on the event in the comments below.

Finally brought it with one of these.
It was a great show. Unfortunately people are still going to gripe about it.
One of the best in a while I thought.
A really good show, plenty of heavy hitters. Had my expectations low but they did actually deliver.
felt like a mini e3 so yeah!
Had low expectations so it exceeded those. Pretty good overall.
Spidey on PC is all I needed, so I'm happy.
Did not expect it to be this good.
Also.
Capgawd for president 2023.
I say good, the content itself was great but the third party games are coming to everything so no reason they should count as a win for Sony just cuz the trailer debuts on their show
Decent but I saw nothing that would want me to buy a PSVR 2 yet.
It was very good, something for everyone.
My highlight? Stray. Looks like something very different from what I usually play, but that's a compliment. The cat is very cute as well.
😍
I'd give the show an 8/10.
I love final fantasy but seriously? Final fantasy fighter?
I kept an eye on Twitter threads but the games they showed off have me HYPED
Wait, it was actually good?
This State of Play blew me away! They had some good heavy hitters, and although there were release dates (and they could be delayed) that show the games are progressing very smoothly. RE4 remake and The Callisto Project look incredible.
Best State of Play… EVER! Fantastic pacing, too.
Open World Street Fighter??
It was great, best one in a good while. There were enough reveals and payoffs to stuff thats been brewing. Only way it couldve been topped was a Ragnarok date...but im assuming that will get its own show later on.
@ShogunRok But people expecting FF16 or Dragon's Dogma 2 are playing themselves.
You were saying? 😂
Good show and putting Stray in PS Plus Extra / Premium was unexpected, but very nice.
My expectations were very low, but for once they were not only met but exceeded, it really feels like they're finally starting to nail this format. I was hoping for Alyx and, as always, something Bloodborne related but that was always going to be pie in the sky
@DualWielding Final Fantasy and Stray are both console exclusive. I'm also fairly certain Street Fighter 6 will also stay exclusive given how well 5 did as PS4 only.
Definitely exceeded expectations!
I kept expectations low, so I felt it delivered. Most of it wasn’t for me, but The Callisto Protocol and FFXVI were more than enough for me to be hyped.
It's like they spent the last few years teaching us to not get over-hyped about these shows, and then they turned the dial up to a thousand.
That was the best presentation since 2015.
I wasn't expecting any of that stuff other than Horizon VR.
Thankfully there were no "insiders" spoiling it for us with leaks this time either.
@torne Street Fighter 6 has already been confirmed by other outlets as also coming to Xbox consoles.
Yeah this was a great show. RE4, Callisto Protocol, FF16 looked great. Street Fighter was a surprise package and piqued my interest, and was pleased to get a release date for stray, and delighted about Tunic.
Overall an enjoyable show. I would have liked to see Silent Hill but i guess with Resident Evil in the event it was always unlikely, and a port of P4G would have been great.
Sony brought it with this show, so just imagine what they might bring to a showcase later in the year!
Generally surprised how good it was
I want a PSVR2 now. Naver had the PSVR, wasn't convinced on PSVR2 at first.
There best one yet, great variety, covered PS4/5 and VR 2 and finished with a big game. Onto Ragnarok please Sony.
Absolutely incredible showing. I want every game.
Really pleasantly surprised to see Stray confirmed as day 1 for ps plus too. Nice to see Sony taking the new service seriously with some day 1 releases, even if they've committed to not putting first party stuff on there day 1
@awp69 okay cool didn't know that.
Great show. Christmas on Callisto, eh? Next year is stacked!
RE 4 Remake was the highlight for me. I also liked the look of the roller skating shooter game (I missed the name because I had to answer a FaceTime call). I really like the look of Stray and it’s great it’s free on day one with certain tiers of PS Plus. Not really into Final Fantasy or PSVR 2 (atm) but the games they showed look promising. Callisto Protocol looks interesting. Overall I’d say it was a pretty good show.
Edit : I totally forgot about Street Fighter 6 (it’s Chun-Li and Ryu - those characters from Fortnite 🤣). Not crazy into fighting games but this looked interesting too.
Looked like there was something for everyone in there. Some of the VR stuff looked pretty good, definitely looking forward to NMS on VR2. Edit: Oh, anyone else notice it said 2022 after the Walking Dead VR trailer?
On the non-VR front I'm thinking I'll give Stray a go.
Biggest surprise was Stray coming day one to PS Extra. Stoked for that!
Fantastic. Way better than I thought it would be and we still have the Playstation 2022 Showcase to come in September. Things are looking really nice.
Solid line up. Most surprised. Can’t wait for Stray or Callisto Protocol. Tunic was a pleasant surprise and is an absolutely fantastic, must-play.
RE4, Calisto Protocol, FF16, Tunic, and best of all Stray is free on PS Extra. Nicely done Sony
Stray on psextra. Nice!
@awp69 I hope SF6 launches with cross-play!
Good show Sony 👌
All the games looked great, Tunic coming to PS5 so I'm happy about that!
I loved it although I still retain that the Japanese centered state of play was also good. I think the biggest surprise would be Sony giving a dating sim a spotlight lmao
Street Fighter and Final Fantasy in the same state of play? These are the series that keep me a gamer. And the rest of it was very interesting as well!
@awp69 it is? I thought it read as Premium only but maybe I missed the small print!
Makes me think if other indie games will end up day one Extra and Premium, maybe Little Devil Inside at some point.
What happened to that dinosaur high school game? Not saying I'm a fan but weird how it's all but disappeared since it's initial reveal back in 2020.
@BoyoArdee "Keep your expectations low and you will never be disappointed" Kratos said
Great show. Stray, SF6, horizon vr, FF16 and tunic will probably be added to my backlog!
Not sure how hyped people were… kept getting told to keep expectations low…so yeah, pretty good chance living up to the hype.
This was a good show if you’re planning on getting psvr.
This was a pretty average show if you’re interest is just in ps5.
What the hell was street fighter 6 trailer about? I was getting excited it was going to have a full on story mode. Also, Ryu needs to get of the peds… he’s gonna end up with some serious mental issues.
Oddly a bit disappointed by the lack of VR2 info, but overall very solid, and loved FFXVI and while I'm disappointed by the release date, I think they mean to stick to it.
@WizzNL Hey, with low expectations everyone wins, including me!
The cat game is looking phenomenal isn’t it 😗 Callisto had a hard act to follow there but I’m sure it will be absorbing no less.
It was surprisingly really good.callisto protocol and resident evil 4.final fantasy 16 and stray etc.word up son
Was a great show, pulled it out the bag with some big bangers! I'm hopeful now that Sony pull out an in-house show with big hitters, because they're definitely hiding the goods (looking at you Naughty Dog!!).
Yeah, that was a very strong State of Play.and sets up nicely for the potential of more announcements in a week.
I’m actually surprised with how good it was. There were alot less VR titles than I thought.
RE4 remake, Village VR, and SF VI from Capcom all look great.
Stray is as charming as ever, nice to get a release date.
FFXVI looks really good! I’m impressed with far its come along since its debut.
Spiderman is a nice get for PC players.
But imo The Callisto Protocol stole the show! Holy crap did that look good. A true successor to Dead Space. Some of those alien designs were beautifully grotesque. This game has shot up my most anticipated list now, and it’s out this year!
Yes it was up to hype, but I’m going to complain anyways!
The font Sony uses was to crossXgEN!!
@torne SF5 was only exclusive because at the time Capcom asked Sony to fund the game as they wasn't doing well back then, Capcom is in a completely different situation now where they are making record profits
Wow seems a lot of people on here are easily pleased. I thought it was average tbf, most of the games shown were cgi trailers and not enough gameplay. I though there were a few decent games in there but to say it was the best State of Play ever? Really?
It’s down to the team in green to respond now and deliver the goods next Sunday, can’t wait.
I was pretty much in for the FFXVI, which did not disappoint at all. But got pleasantly surprised by the sudden new game plus announcement (and patch) for Horizon Forbidden West.
Would have liked more on PSVR2, snd a half life announcement, but generally very impressive.
All killer, no filler!
Seriously impressed with the vr2
Horizon update
Stray free on the extra service
That roller blading game
Lots from capcom and final fantasy.
Enjoyed it all.
Awesome show Sony keep this momentum up!
It was just okay to me.
Resident Evil 4 reveal was nice.
It was nice to see more of Stray and get a release date (that cat is adorable).
Callisto Protocol has me very interested.
Everything else got a neutral reaction from me - including Final Fantasy XVI. I am also not interested in PSVR2.
Wow…I watched after it ended…was just gonna skim figuring it was going it be indie stuff…I was in the edge of my seat….I actually am interested in almost every game…fantastic job!
@ROBLIVION it looked to me like only the summons battle it out with fighter like health bars, but the rest of the game seems to be in line with 15 or 7 remake.
@MaccaMUFC Literally every game had gameplay. Not one announcement was without gameplay. Also, people saying it is the best SOP ever is just a reflection that none of the prior SOPs were better.
I'd kept my expectations very low, so perhaps I was more impressed than I should have been - but this felt like a home run. I loved the surprise Horizon Forbidden West patch announcement - remoted to my PS5 while I watched the stream to start the patch download.
I'm not sure I'd call this the best State of Play ever, but it was very solid. It delivered on what they said they'd deliver. I'm not thrilled with every game, but that's inevitable - there was some variety here to interest most anybody.
WOW! They really pulled out all the stops! I'm speechless! Excellent State of Play!!
it’s a light at the end of the tunnel to say the least
Expectations reached a 7 just before the show and I thought it actually exceeded them. Stray looks great and to have the Horizon update shadow drop is a nice surprise.
I must have a watched a different show ,no surprises really ,capcom supporting vr2 with resident evil was a given, ff16 looks stunning but I wanted to see more of the open world, that persona lookalike looks interesting but I've forgotten what it was called already
Well, i wasn't hyped. I wasn't expecting it to be good. They showed RE4, SF6 and FFXVI.
None of it was something that interests me, except FF. I thought the UI got heavily cluttered since the last trailer and the release is pretty far away, but it's something i am going to get. I have full confidence on yoshiP.
Also, i gotta laugh. Capcom just recently released RE4 VR on occulus and now they are remaking it and putting it on VR again? I don't get that decision making process. Remake code veronica. That actually needed one.
Resident evil 4 looks incredible I just hope it lives up to the original
@BritneyfR_ee Roller Drome. I thought it was more dlc news for olliolli world at first when I seen the art style and Roll 7. Nice surprise.
@tallythwack no surprises? Are you for real? Stray going to ps plus, Tunic finally arriving...
9/10, better than any of last years E3 shows and will be hard to beat with Microsofts up coming show and summer games fest but we shall see.
Only two games I'm not interested in were indie games and I'm now hyped for psvr2 and eternights
the only thing which dampers it for me is the number of times we saw 2023
I must admit, this one was great!
Amazing!... Games, games and more games - love it!
This is how you do it.
@Master_Shake Yeah your right actually, I take back my last comment. I was watching the State of Play while working but after rewatching it there is actually a decent amount of gameplay for some games. There was only three games I was interested in The Callisto Protocol, RE4 Remake and Stray but there was enough variety of games for everyone.
Where's the "fantastic" option?
This was a great State of Play for me personally!
I'm excited between RE4 Remake coming in March, Stray launching for free in July for PS+ Extra/Premium members, Dead Space's spiritual successor The Callisto Protocol releasing this December, Final Fantasy XVI dropping Summer 2023, and maybe Street Fighter 6 which is also coming in 2023.
Finally got to watch it. Damn that was great. Stray coming out really soon, Final Fantasy 16 looked amazing, Street Fighter 6 with a sweet style and open-world story mode, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and some other goodies like Callisto Protocol and Eternights.
That’s not even mentioning all the VR stuff!
Callisto Protocol and Eternights already have my money.
I can't believe im going to say this but your going to get a yes from me. I pretty much liked almost all the trailers but these were special to me in particular
Stray-🔥🔥🔥
Street Fighter 6-🔥🔥🔥🔥
Final Fantasy 16-🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Callisto Protocol-🔥🔥🔥
Resident Evil 4 Remake-🔥🔥🔥
The VR stuff was cool too.
It might be the best in terms of just straight trailers not game specific State of Plays.
This was easily the best State of Play yet. What was unexpected though, was the announcement that Stray would be launching day and date on the higher Plus tiers. It'll be interesting to see if Sony has more of these in store, after Jim Ryan had said they wouldn't be doing that
@pyrrhic_victory I believe that was Jim Ryan’s stance on first-party games, which Stray is not.
It was good, a solid B. It even got me interested in PSVR 2. RE 8 and Horizon looks really good on it. Also that huge Horizon Forbiden West update was really cool.
@DeepSpace5D True. It's just that he didn't mention third party day and date releases either, even after Shadow Warrior 3 had launched on PS now. So I had a feeling there might be more. But yeah, first party games are off the table
Best one yet but thats not really a high bar.
A solid C+
To be honest, it's the first one of these I wasn't disappointed by. Voted "very good."
Resident evil 4 remake has me so excited for the release next March.
Hands down my favourite RE game and the fact it’s PS5 only bodes well as no last gen holding it back.
Based on everyone else’s hype, I may need to re-check my gaming credentials. Stray was the only game that interested me
Separately, why in VR do they only show your hands? Is it computationally too heavy to attach those hands to some arms? It looked bizarre in the Horizon demo
PSVR2 part was okayish ....
Brand new Resistance in PSVR2, anyone?
And Half Life Alyx when?
...
But the rest was really good. Stray was the most unique.
Callisto Protocol was Dayyuum!
SF6 looked really good. Hope for New MvC!
RE4 felt like REVIII DLC ... XD (sorry)
FFXVI gave 'FF x Witcher III' vibes
Was Ok, I would give it a C as I have no interest in VR. And the FF16 trailer killed my hyped for that game
Very good for me, I'm a big Resident Evil fan so that had a strong showing and I'm excited for the VR content and The Callisto Protocol looks right up my street. Then with Stray and Final Fantasy XVI I was very happy, still not convinced by Street Fighter 6's presentation though
IMO it was.... actually pretty great!
My expectations were tempered appropriately, and I was really pleasantly surprised.
I was already pumped for RE4R and FFXVI... so seeing these trailers alone made the SoP worthwhile. Also, SF6....a game I previously had zero interest in, now I'm keen for it!
Only notable omission was GoW, but in fairness Sony did stipulate beforehand that 1st party games would not be covered. I'd probably expect GoW to get its own show closer to the rumoured release in Sept.
My ONLY 'negative' would be this = where is the Bloodborne remaster at?! Even a 60fps patch would have me jumping for joy ha!
Overall a terrific effort.
2023 is shaping up to be great for gaming in general, when you consider BOTW2 and Starfield as well.
I cannot really see what more people could have been expecting. We knew there were not going to be any huge first party games like God of War 2 or whatever is next from Naughty Dog, so no-one can be disappointed they were not there.
What was there was excellent. Some really big games (RE4 remake, FFXVI, SFVI) and some smaller, but still exciting games, like Callisto Protocol, Tunic being announced, PSVR titles being shown, plus a load of other stuff.
Really had something for pretty much everyone (except maybe if you are only into racing games, I do not think it had any of them that I can recall).
I couldn't even sleep after this show..I'm still hyped up thinking about it
I think it was excellent; some great trailers and reveals, and some very impressive looking games! Super well paced too
Stray looked absolutely intriguing. That and a few other games in the catalogue tempts me to upgrade to Extra this summer. FFXVI looks beautiful but it really comes down to the combat and UI stuff for me. Still a get Day 1. I wish Capcom said the RE PS5 upgrade dates because I want to try my first ever RE. I’m interested in really all the VR2 games. I’ve never played with VR before. Disappointed no Atlus/Sega news. Would’ve loved something Persona or Yakuza. This doesn’t beat the hype I got last year with FF7R’s PS5 upgrade. But it was a good presentation.
Sure, you always want more from these events than they can offer but what was there was awesome. Remember they also need to show stuff at the Summer Games Show, Gamescom, PlayStation Showcase later in the year and the Game Awards.
I enjoyed it, it gave me a look at games I didn't know were a thing and games that I want to play. It left me wanting more which is good because I'm invested in seeing the next State of Play. Overall I thought it was great.
Not a lot for me personally at all, but objectively a pretty strong showing
@Bondi_Surfer I felt the same way as you. Only Stray interested me, and the disconnected hands in VR looked so odd.
I can recognise how epic this was for fans of the franchises shown. Street Fighter 6 in particular looked really awesome! It made me wish I had the skill and memory to play combo-reliant fighting games.
@MaccaMUFC oh come on, the Xbox showcase is their ONLY showcase this year. Sony have gone for a different approach with more regular but shorter showreel's. I refer the latter approach really but I'll be watching the Xbox one with interest.
If there really was nothing shown last nighr that was of any interest then that's on you.
Edit: I read your latter comment whete you're a bit more positive. That's good, you know it makes sense.
😉
No Deathloop. 0/10
@PlayStationGamer3919 I don't understand how the Japanese style sop was a disaster? Did you mean that the games shown weren't your type of game or were there dreadful technical issues with the stream?
@Bondi_Surfer the hands only thing worked fine in Robinson The Journey
That was incredible! Very impressive and it was 99% 3rd party, usually those are average at best. Saints and Sinners 2 looked like a god tier VR experience as well as Horizon. Re4, FF16, SF6, Stray, etc, all good.
Just seems like the second half of the year is going to lean for 3rd parties. Hopefully we get a PS Studios show soon or they feature in SGF next week.
It was good, because RE4 was revealed. I hope it will play on Steam Deck too (I'm a handheld gamer these days).
I didn't see anything interesting on the game side.
One thing that did cement for me; no real reason to buy a PS or XBS anymore if you are into PCs and have the money for them. A nice PC (more expensive yes but MUCH better for games) is going to get you MS games day 1 and pretty much all Sony's first party stuff within a year or 2.
Too bad chip issues have murdered the PC market and drove costs sky high.
27% of voters need to find a new hobby. How anyone can rate that just ok to very poor baffles me!
Nothing coming out soon. Way too early to announce any of those games.
@daveofduncan stray will be poor thats why its going straight to ps plus, and tunic ive already played and wasn't impressed ,besides its an indie game of course its coming to ps
@MightyDemon82 I voted ok ,and I really don't see why people are so impressed,a patch announcement...seriously
Reading through some of the comments, I'm starting to believe you're all aliens trying to convince me this was something it wasn't,I dont get why everyone is so excited.
@tallythwack By patch I'm guessing you mean for HFW? It was a quick few seconds update and was announced off the back of the VR game so thematically made sense and it's something a lot of gamers were looking for.
All the games looked great to me I'm especially excited for FFXVI, Callisto Protocol,Resident Evil 4 and Horizon VR!
Maybe you need a new hobby.
Was pretty good even though I had mixed feeling about some of choices for some games! For me The Callisto Protocol looked the most interesting and SF6 the one that want to know more about!
RE4R looks like it will get the RE2R treatment, which is good but also not a fan or Leon's baby face after 6 years! Not a fan of real people faces! Stylized Leon looked much better! Why not do why they did with Ashley, she looks pretty good in the new one.. but I think they will nail this one (hopefully not another RE3R)
it was OK. no new games were announced though so how good could it possibly have been?
@PlayStationGamer3919 Oh don't be such a drama queen
I was expecting a load of bugsnax 2 type games and a Lil teaser for the psvr2 but instead got the 2 games I'm most hyped for!
sf6 and ff16. Well done PlayStation!
I glimpsed a headline mentioning Horizon Call of the Mountain and got super hyped, but then my hopes plummeted when I saw t was a VR game. Never been one for zombies, or Final Fantasy or Street Fighter, or horror, so pretty much the only thing that interested me was Stray (which keeps making me think of Love Death and Robots 3 Robots episodes). Overall felt pretty disappointed with this, surprised to see so many saying it was the best State of Play ever.
@tallythwack FFXVI, Callisto Protocol,Resident Evil 4 and Stray and even that patch was cool news.
I think it edgy to complain about everything all and hating is hot. There are a few people here that you people make me
Interesting to see how many big games are still cross-gen literally two+ years after release. Yet more reasons to not get a PS5.
@Flaming_Kaiser seen them all before ,played resi 4 before and also on the quest, not really that exciting ,I really don't think having a difference of opinion should be classed as edgy ,I just think some people are more easily impressed, and seriously a patch ,oooh new game plus ,ooh I can change my characters clothes ooooooh 😂
