Penning this poll almost feels like throwing a lit match into a room full of flammable gas, but we're going to do it anyway. We want to know: do you think Sony's latest State of Play actually ended up being the best gaming showcase of Not-E3? That is, the best gaming showcase of June 2022?
We ask because we think this is a legitimate argument. Many thought that Sony's lack of a proper Not-E3 event would see it get buried by the likes of Microsoft and Nintendo, but that State of Play back on the 2nd June ended up being an absolute banger — arguably the best State of Play that PlayStation has ever put together.
A quick recap, then. The June State of Play featured megatons like Resident Evil 4 (complete with release date), Street Fighter 6 (complete with loads of first details), Final Fantasy XVI (complete with a release window), and a bunch more fan-pleasing announcements and updates. In terms of headlines, State of Play was a big deal, and it attracted millions upon millions of views in just a few days. For a full recap of what was shown, check out our State of Play Round Up from the night.
So what's the competition? Well, there's obviously Microsoft's lengthy Xbox Showcase, which wrapped up with a couple of announcements that actually placed an embargo on the news that the featured games would also come to PlayStation. It was a packed show, no doubt, but you could argue that it lacked the impact of Sony's smaller State of Play.
Much more recently, Nintendo had its third party Direct, which was full of news, while both Capcom and Square Enix hosted their own events in the form of the Capcom Showcase and Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration, respectively. The latter went down especially well thanks to the announcement of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
And of course, how could we forget Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest Live? Again, another packed showing, but did it have the knockout reveals of Sony's broadcast? That's up for debate.
It's time to vote, then. What was the best gaming showcase of June 2022 — otherwise known as Not-E3? Vote in our poll, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.

Maybe yeah. I mean Sony and Microsoft’s both had very little first party stuff and were predominantly 3rd Party focussed… and I was more excited for the 3rd Party stuff at the SoP for sure.
State of play had far more surprises and made for a more exciting show. Microsoft/Bethesda’s conference focused on almost exclusively on major previously confirmed games (thinking of starfield)
Gotta admit as a PS5 and PC owner I thought the Xbox Showcase was better. Gamepass value is ridiculous and can essentially be free with Microsoft Rewards on PC. PS+ unfortunately doesn't compete although still love Sony first party stuff. I very rarely buy on release now though and wait till physical PS5 versions are on discount.
Picking a winner here feels like choosing between ready salted crisps or a slice of bread. All were pretty mediocre - not necessarily bad - but lacked the 'wow' factor.
I think all of them had something good to offer. For state of play, I really liked the Final Fantasy stuff and RE4R. For Xbox showcase, Starfield, Hideo Kojima reaffirming his Xbox project and the Persona series announcement were the highlights imo. And Capcom having SF6. As gamers, the next twelve months should be pretty sweet for all involved.
Yah they were all pretty bad, however asking between the two showcases that were even remotely anything (the Playstation and Xbox ones), is pretty biased on a Playstation dedicated website,..... No?
Capcom for me, Sony's was underwhelming.
I think the "E3" period was a bit of a damp squib overall, and a reminder that we need to let go of this old, outdated concept of press conferences in June.
I think Sony's State of Play surprised us all by just how good it was. It certainly had the most surprises in my opinion.
I think if they could have included a few new first-party announcements and some God of War gameplay, the State of Play would have been right up there with some of Sony's best conferences.
sony had resident evil 4, final fantasy, and the new horror game. i thought sony would do a BIG how as usual. what a ***** show. xbox had redfall, flintlock, high on life, minecraft legends, lightyear frontier, benedict fox, as dusk falls, pentiment, ravenlok, diablo 4, wo long, persona 3,4,5, starfield, forza motorsport. and 99% of them is free!! if you have game pass. so who had the better show??
Probably yeah. Xbox was great too but PS had a surprisingly great showcase for mostly third party stuff. The Wholesome Direct was great though and that’s not here!
For me the Xbox one was slightly better, but they scratched different itches. PS had a few bigger AAA's but was a bit disappointing for me personally, weren't enough new games I wanted to play. Whereas Xbox didn't have many AAA's but had plenty I was interested in and all supposedly coming in the next 12 months, most of it to Game Pass.
But all in all i'm with @get2sammyb 'E3' 2022 was a damp squib in general, with very few surprises.
Who won E3 is and always has been fanboy nonsense
Sony's State of Play was the winner for me for Final Fantasy XVI alone. And then Sqaure Enix for Final Fantasy Crisis Core and VII ReBirth.
I think it was, followed by Final Fantasy VII and Devolver (who win in terms of style)
Most of them had something I was interested in, but the PlayStation show was for sure the one that hyped me the most.
The Final Fantasy show and Capcom were excellent too.
Yeah... no. Xbox was by the far the more interesting presentation. Some ff16 stuff was nice but the majority was VR focused, which is hard to get excited about without a release date or a
Xbox showed gameplay and the amount coming to game pass in the next 12 months just made it more engaging.
Interesting Poll on a PS website. I wonder what the results will be on your green sister site.
All of them were solid, none of them were amazing. Overall I liked Sony's presentation a tad more than Nintendo's, but I like to keep my expectations in check. No boarding on the hype train for me.
hehe i voted xbox on a playstation site
In terms of individual showcases, I think they were all pretty much on par. But taken as a whole, I think Sony still came out ahead. Knowing I'll be playing Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth ony my PS5 next year alongside Spider-man 2 gets me very excited. Not much else from the competition can really compete with that.
In general I'd just say Capcom won overall as a publisher. Resident Evil 8 has some interesting content coming up. Resident Evil 4 was exciting for many folks. Dragons Dogma 2 is finally official and Street Fighter 6 owned a lot of the conversion for the entire month with a great first showing.
I'd imagine they are feeling really happy with how the month went for them.
@nomither6 that’s liable to get you banned on here lol
Clear PlayStation bias on display, as it should be on a dedicated site. But I don’t see how this topped Microsoft or Nintendo’s shows. While there weee great reveals, the vast majority of what was shown will be available on other systems. Meanwhile, the lion’s share of what we saw on the MS and Ninty shows were exclusives, timed exclusives, or had exclusive comment. Sony’s show did nothing to convince me I needed a PlayStation. Microsoft & Nintendo both showed why you want in their respective ecosystems.
I thought MS gave a better look at what their next 12 months looks like(and Nintendo did this earlier in the year) which I don’t think we have from Sony yet so it’s a bit of an apples and oranges question.
Xbox won hands down and I'll explain why ,
They showed some of what was coming over the next 12 months of game pass so ppl will know some of what they get for their money ....anyone with 12 months ps plus extra know what you will be getting ? No it's all built on faith that Sony will release something worth paying the money for
I can see the state of play being great for horror fans, but I'm not into horror and fighting games so the only thing that stood out for me was final fantasy. During the Xbox showcase I saw a lot more interesting games so for me personally Xbox was the clear winner.
I think Square Enix could run their own presentation again. They got so much (mostly great) stuff coming, even without some IPs like tomb raider and Deus ex.
Damn, a lot of people seem to have liked Xbox showcase. I had it at 3rd place, behind SoP and Nintendo direct mini.
You lot are making Geoff sad with that 1% Summer Game Fest vote.
By far State of Play. Bethesda/Xbox a close second though.
Sony just have such a good relationship with a lot of 3rd party devs, plus PSVR 2 is constantly pulling my pants down.
Starfield was good but I was slightly disappointed with the usual Bethesda visual package. I guess the only thing that will save it is the story, because the gun play, combat, scenery, characters' eyes, and everything gamey looks somewhat meh for me.
@get2sammyb ‘old outdated press conferences of June’… do gamers really look back on E3 years and think “well that was boring…hope I never have to go through that again”?
Far as I can remember E3 was always looked forward to by gamers. Full of excitement and hype. A three day weekend dedicated to what we supposedly love. Some liked to bitch and moan at how ‘E3 is dying’ but we still all tuned in, all soaked up an event celebrating what we love. I definitely miss those days…I don’t know we any gamer wouldn’t welcome back the days of the big three having conferences back to back…all the speculation that came before it…and all the excitement that came after it. It was a whirlwind of sensory information…the occasional disappointment, but mostly reaping some sort of reward from the one up man ship going on between Microsoft Sony and Nintendo.
Now it’s little tokens throughout the year… there’s not the same level of anticipation. Nor that same level of reward. When given something frequently, every few months.
This year was lacking in excitement. If Xbox stick to the 12 month thing then next year going forward should be decent and show more surprises. But I’d personally love Sony and Nintendo to come out fighting in June alongside them again. I don’t care if it makes them less financial sense. I don’t care if it risks games getting overlooked by the average viewer. I care about the build up, the buzz those 3 days created around the gaming community. The conversation. The excitement it personally gives me.
The only reason why Sonys state of play (showing nothing but 3rd party) in June impressed more than expected is because there isn’t that same level of excitement/anticipation/expectation around PlayStation in June since they removed themselves from the traditional E3 like conferences. To me, this isn’t a pro for a lack of E3 and it’s ‘out dated’ format. The games shown are good, but the show itself offers no room for anything special. It’s not an event. And gaming having a true event isn’t a bad thing.
Yep, it had more fantastic FFXVI footage. That alone placed it at the top. Second best was the FF7 stream for Rebirth. All the others were eh, and some of Xboxs and Nintys biggest highlights were just ports. My favorite reveals both showed off are coming to PlayStation anyway, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty and Mega Man battle network
It was all pretty abysmal tbh
For new exciting AAA games yes state of play was the best.
Xbox showcase was focused on gamepass and full of indie and AA games and no big exclusives this year, plus most of games shown were also coming to playstation, it did absolutely nothing to convince me to re sub to gamepass which was the main reason I watched it and main reason I bought an xbox in the first place, I didn't but it to play indies....
In second place il give it to nintnedo, showed some great games and Harvestella is looking amazing, plus Mario and rabbids 2 and dragon quest treasures looked good.
It was Xbox... Sony was better in terms of the game shown but they were mostly multiplatform.games that they'll expect you to pay $70.00 for ... Xbox Showcase had some exclusives and everything is gonna be included on their suscription....
For me it was the Xenoblade Direct but only because I’m a massive Xenoblade fan.
None of them got me really excited. Nothing bad just OK shows.
Well the Xbox showcase had Silksong and every other game is going to pale in comparison to that in my eyes.
It was clearly the xbox show case, but we are not comparing like for like... A 3rd party only SOP is not Sonys summer game show.
I didnt think the Microsoft show was stellar mind you, but by its very nature it had more games and more variety than a quick 30 minute 3rd party SOP did.
Nintendo's show was only good from a Nintendo-only perspective, since the biggest announcements in that were almost all ports of games from other systems.
Microsoft had some great Game Pass announcements and, finally a first-party showcase of Starfield... which unfortunately fell flat for me.
Sony's show featured a number of big multiplatform game reveals, but almost nothing that made me think: "I need a Playstation 5!"
So the Final Fantasy one gets the nod from me.
@Atreus97 Crisps in one hand.. Bread in the other.. Put your hands together
nods approvingly
Xbox’s game pass has unmatched value. As I got a gaming PC last year, it was thrilling to watch Xbox’s stream knowing I could download and play any of the games they showed at no extra cost. $10/month is nuts. Still so excited for Final Fantasy XVI and RE4 remake, but I’ll be mostly on PC until next year, truly. Been a slow year for PS5, especially considering their big hit for the fall is The Last of Us again for $70
Eh, it was fine. Good even. I thought Microsoft edged it though.
For me, Wholesome Direct 2022 was the best presentation for having tons of cute indie games.
The PS showcase was the best one for me, followed by FF7.
Capcom was the only one I actually liked although re4 was at Sony's showcase it's still capcoms game
The first 5 minutes of this Direct bored me and I started regretting watching it but then it picked up and by the time it was over I genuinely thought it was good. Obviously the numerous ports means it wouldn't have much for PS gamers - I own both PS4 + PS5 - but from a Nintendo perspective it offered a lot that will be out in the next 8-10 months.
I enjoyed the majority of the shows, but was pleasantly surprised by Sony's showing. Having a lot of VR experience, I was really excited for Horizon, Saints & Sinners and Resident Evil. The 2D doesn't do it justice, but VR users know what those will look like in play, and it's pretty exciting! A lot of other stuff was shown as well, but I think what really got me excited was the lack of much first party. All these Sony Studios tinkering away, and outside of God of War, we don't know much on what they're tinkering on!
I think Microsoft's show was good, but when you have to isolate it to games that were mostly shown 18 months ago and are finally being staged as releasing in the next 12 months, after the aforementioned 18 months with only Forza as a first party release...it's more of a "it's about damn time!" than anything else.
I think the Hideo Kojima presence at the M$ conference tips the scales for me.
Devolver by far.
Nintendo's events (Partner Showcase + XC3 Direct) and the State of Play were very strong (prefer the former as I'm not a fan of horror games which the State of Play featured heavily) meanwhile the FF7 and Capcom presentations were solid.
Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Showcase were mostly a waste of time, especially disappointed in the latter as the former was expected to be bad. I feel Microsoft should've done a 3rd party showcase like Nintendo and Sony did, shadow dropped the Hot Wheels trailer and had a 1st party focused showcase in September instead.
If you think about games rather than showcase, the real winners are Square Enix and Capcom rather than Sony or Microsoft.
@RenanKJ
I can agree with this...although it goes back to my previous post about Sony not showing much first party. But SE and Capcom were full frontal for Sony's SoP.
PlayStation State of Play without a doubt! Runner ups would be Nintendo's recent mini Direct and the FF7 25th Anniversary Celebration.
I can't wait to play Stray, The Callisto Protocol, FF16, FF Ever Crisis, FF7 Crisis Core Reunion, and FF VII Rebirth.
I'll also get the below games eventually, when they're on sale for dirt cheap with everything included.
RE4 Remake
Street Fighter 6
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection
Pac-Man World: Re-Pac
Return to Monkey Island
Mario + Rabbits Sparks of Hope
RPG Time: The Legend of Wright
Sonic Frontiers
Disney Dreamlight Valley
Dragon Quest Treasures
Portal Companion Collection
Harvestella
For me Nintendo Direct mini. Next to my PlayStation I also have a Nintendo Switch and the prospect that I can play Persona 3-5 Royal, Nier Automata and No man’s sky on my Switch in October is just amazing! And bad for my bank account 🙃
@stormyuk why would you be interested in game pass? With a gaming PC and PlayStation you already have access to all games available on the marked for Xbox, PlayStation and PC. I don’t think there are any Xbox exclusives that are not coming out on PC as well.
@BadPlayerOne
Lots of people prefer to play games on a console.
I do have a 3090 pc and its plugged into a 48inch oled, so it looks the part for games, but for many reasons I like to sit back on my sofa and use a console for most gaming.
Gamepass on pc is broken and stupid. Half the titles dont function correctly and often the gamepass versions lack parity with the steam release, its a mess. In contrast, gp on an xbox is seemless and works great.
I tend to game on ps5, and we have two because my wife likes to play too, but I also have a series x to take advantage of gamepass.
So I definately understand why someone with a pc buys an xbox, ive done it myself.
@BadPlayerOne Gamepass PC...
@Titntin but that’s a bad service from Xbox being a subsidiary of Microsoft you should think they were able to deliver PC versions of their games running perfectly.
@stormyuk yeah I guess there is really no need to spent money on buying an Xbox, when you already have a PC and a PlayStation.
Well its a playstation news site, ofc a playstation showcase would win the poll
Yes but I'm giving this one to Sony not because the recent State of Play was great, more to do with MS and Nintendo didn't even bother to show up with whatever it was they put out. SoP did have a few interesting games. Can't say the same for the other shows.
Playstation for sure.
Microsoft is basically my PC showcase, and excitement will depend on how well they run as handheld games.
PC GamePass does not work on SteamDeck so that has lost some value to me.
Nintendo I did not even watch, just saw highlights later.
