Nearly 20 months later, Sony has finally followed up on the PlayStation Showcase from 2021 with a big glimpse behind the curtain at what its first-party studios are working on it. Complemented by exciting third-party content, the show went on for over an hour, sharing long-awaited looks at PS5 games we knew about as well as fresh announcements to give us something else to get excited for.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was practically a shoo-in, with a lot of web-slinging gameplay shown. PlayStation Studios also had Fairgames from Haven Studio to show as well as Helldivers 2. There was also Marathon from Bungie.
As for third-party content, the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was finally announced, and we also saw release dates for Alan Wake II and Assassin's Creed Mirage. New announcements included Ultros, Revenant Hill, and The Talos Principle II.
It was a lengthy livestream indeed with so much news and information, but what did you think of the show overall? Did you love the reveals or are you still left wanting more? That was depressingly bad.
It was an ok show but I think it was lacking some first party games like Wolverine, Death Stranding 2 and TLOU Factions, you would think they were closer to being finished than the other titles they showed (apart from spiderman), Where was Pragmata, The Devil Inside and Stellar Blade?
Indies - B
Third party - A+
PSVR2 - C
First Party - C
Overall - B- (Good)
What has me concerned is the fact there was no Persona, which has me worried Microsoft have the rights to whatever new game is coming, if it's just the marketing then that's fine but if there's any exclusivity deal then I'm seriously considering boycotting Atlus going forward if that's how they treat the company and the players who made the series what it is today.
Happy to see Granblue get a release window that will actually be kept this time, but was also hoping for some Eternights and Ronin news. It seems they focussed a lot on third party and indies like they were trying to prove a point they support indies as much as the competition do, which is fine but that should be kept for a state of play, this was their moment to shine in almost two years without a showcase so you would think AAA games would be the focus.
Also the PlayStation handheld looks epic and will definitely be getting one if its priced £200 or less.
This should be fun. Grabs popcorn.
Total disaster, Ryan and Hulst should retire and focus on their golf game
7/10 it was solid, but unspectacular.
People will go overboard and say it was terrible but we saw - ff16, sf6 2 mgs games, Dragons dogma 2 and spidey. Plus stuff like granblue.
It lacked where it didn’t show new games as most had been seen already, and little from ps studios
Expected to get at least a brief look at upcoming games from internal studios... Kinda disappointed.
It was very meh in the end... expect at least one big hitter that came out of nowhere that no one expected.
I usually like all these, but I felt it was a bit underwhelming.
It was a Playstation Showcase but, what are the teams doing? We barely got anything first party. Spider-Man looks great but...that's only Insomniac.
This was utterly dreadful and my faith in Sony is now at an all time low.
Wasn’t Worth the wait 😔
It was pretty yikes.
Some good games to come out. Was one of the better gameshows in the last few years. Spiderman2 looks mental
Did some people think it was really bad? I mean they should Metal Gear, Fnaf Help Wanted 2, Spider-Man 2 gameplay so I don’t think it is really that bad.
Not even close for me. SM2 is a day one, Metal gear stuff is cool but expected, everything else was a wait for it come to Plus/GamePass. Not a good look at all overall though imo.
Are they taking the p*ss? That was mid af! Spider-Man looks great though
It was horrible. I am just lost for words.
It was a 4/10 at best for me. I NEVER imagined it would be this bad after waiting so long. No Factions, Twisted Metal, Wolverine, Sony Bend game, Ghost of Tsushima 2, etc. I usually don’t bash these shows, but man that was garbage.
Best ever? No, this was ass.
Phantom blade and dragons dogma was good. So dissapointed with Sony 1st party though, just nothing after all this time. Spiderman had me checking the weather on my phone, bit hopefully people like it. No team asobi, just nothing interesting or new from Sony. Thank God for Nintendo is all I can say, they still have some joy left.
Such a bad show. Almost all these games are multiplats, they showed games people already saw and they barely showed anything AAA first party. For a 2 year wait? I had low expectations compared to the people expecting 10 AAA games too.
If this was a State of Play I think I would've been able to forgive it a bit more. But as a PS Showcase? ....yeah this one wasn't great. Definitely stuff I liked (Plucky Squire, Sword in the Sea, MGS3 Remake, Spidey 2) but there wasn't really much we didn't know about beforehand, even some of the really cool stuff like Dragon's Dogma 2, and a lot of it just DRAGGED (WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT GRAN TURISMO AD).
Overall, a glass-half-full 6/10 from me.
I mean, as a yearly thing this might've been good... but this was the first one since September 2021 and I'm just extremely whelmed. Not depressingly bad IMO but certainly not good, perhaps the worst kind of showcase.
Abysmal. Cinematic trailers only work for games that generate hype, not random GaaS.
I hope this isn't the future of Playstation lol. Yeah, I think I might have gone in with too high expectations. Some good moments, but on the whole, poor.
I feel very... whelmed.
When the best thing about the show was a remaster of a PS3 game, you realise that there's a big problem with "what's next" for gaming.
Sony absolutely did not deliver here.
This is by far, Sonys very worst Showcase.
After almost 2 years of radio silence, we got this? Absymal.
Where is Naughty Dog, Bluepoint, Sucker Punch and all the other ones that define the Playstation console?
Waste of time.
That was very disappointing. What are the internal studios working on? We hardly got a look. Might aswell have called it a 3rd Party Showcase.
Metal gear solid 3 and spiderman 2 looking great the rest was okay 😅
Should of shown some tlou mp at least.
Passable.
I thought it was okay at best personally. Not what I expected after so long without any meaningful announcements.
A lot of trailers for new games with very little or no gameplay whatsoever. Accessory announcements with no details.
Detailed trailers only for games that had been previously announced without adding much to what was already known.
It was a LOT of flash with very little substance.
I thought it was rubbish.
Didn't watch it, waiting for your "everything announced during" article to make up my mind.
that leaker was right, they really did blown my balls... as a method of torture... what a mid show
Think that might be the first time I have voted 'poor'. Obviously not much ready to be shown from Sony's own studios yet.
Thank god for Spidey at least.
Well other then Spider-Man 2 and MGS3 i thought it was pretty damn poor. It was just endless indies and 3rd party stuff and barely anything from Sony themselves. Where was Wolverine? Bluepoint? Factions? Sucker Punch?
Spider-Man 2 does look incredible though.
I never let myself get excited. This time I did. Lesson learned, literally never get your hopes up. Can't believe how boring this was.
Terrible showcase. They showed an array of games along a spectrum, but I assumed we would do at least 1 new IP announcement that would get me hyped about having my PS5. Spider-Man 2 wasn't enough for me. Many games showed were only CGI trailers. This doesn't show the forefront of the excitement of games on PS5.
I'm keeping my eye out for Phantom Blade 0 and Neva, but this showcase was very lackluster in terms of content.
If Xbox can’t beat that. They need to sell Xbox to Apple or Amazon. That wasn’t good, and still no Last of Us multiplayer shown. 3/10 show for me. Sorry not trying to ruin it for those that liked it.
Selling the psvr2 was the right decision personally
It was a complete disaster. Nothing from about Factions, Cory Barlog's game, Ghost of Tsushima 2, mostly PC games getting ported to PC and lame indie games, no release date for Spider-Man 2 (which means it's getting delayed to next year), the trailer for MGS3 remake was super lame and didn't even say who's developing it. The Haven game looks boring and Square Enix's Splatoon/Fortnite rip off looks god awful.
Cat Quest 3. Consider me won over
Metal Gear and Spiderman 2 saved this show for me. If those weren’t there I’d rate it as very poor. Lame even.
This was the worst PS5 showcase so far. No shocks or really big surprises. No FF16 Demo and not even a Spiderman 2 release date!
No DS2, I'm so disappointed
Well, almost everything was multiplatform. Mainly just Spider-Man and some PSVR 2 games for exclusives. Kind of disappointing from that point of view. (Even though I really don’t care about console wars)
Spider-Man and a few indies... everything else kind of sucked. So, like, why did I buy a PS5?
MGS 3 remake for all platforms!!!!
I think if I owned a psVR2, I would be really worried. Not much new software heading their way.
Was okay, but disappointed in lack of gameplay in many titles. Assassin’s Creed and Spider-Man looked good.
I have no idea if it’s the best one. What’s certain is that we’re eating well this Fall.
Spider-Man 2 aside, in regards to first-party releases, this presentation was a big fat nothing-burger. Sorry, but wasn't this supposed to "fill PlayStation fans in on the next era of PS5", or something to that effect? Damn, I don't even have a PS5 and that was depressing to watch.
This was definitely their worst showcase yet, it's definitely down there with some of their worse state of plays. Like sony really came in with quantity over quality this time. Like we haven't heard any significant news from them in almost 2 years. This definitely wasn't it.
That was really disapointing. There were a few games. But most of them just looked awful. I was actuallt debating to watch it or not so gutted i did. And still confused is beat saber out on psvr 2 or what lol
@TripleEyeGaming Spider-Man is a fall 2023 release
Put me firmly in the "Okay" column. Honestly, very little that was shown got me excited, although I am sure some of these games will be good. I would have given this a C, but I really liked the Spidey 2 segment. Venom powers gameplay. So it is bumped up to a B- for me.
@AndyKazama haha when Cat Quest 3 was the highlight of the show for me too....it's maybe not the best look.
Honestly, no. It ended strong with Spider Man but it was mostly just mid throughout. It doesn’t speak well when one of the best new things was a teaser for a remake of a nearly 20 year old game.
I thought it was really poor. Lots of live service games, a shocking amount for PSVR2 and I even thought Spider-Man 2 looked worse than the recent remastered first game.
The fact that the MGS games are ports of the originals plus a number 3 remaster is not appealing.
Also the bubble blasting game has to be one of the most embarrassing attempts to blatantly copy a successful game I've ever seen.
But at least the PS5 now has a Wii U GamePad! It will also probably cost around £300.
Waste of my time Sony.
that was pretty awful damn
Only a few games I would be interested in. Expected a lot more big games to be shown.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner dude, we've seen plenty of FFXVI footage, the MGS games are remastered, and the Spidery 2 gameplay was cool, but not enough to make someone excited about having a PlayStation. We are about 2 years away from being 5 years into new-gen and there's nothing much to show of it for PS5 exclusivity or excitement.
Yeeesh, if that's the best they can show mid-gen, ouch. Still no mention of Bloodborne, nothing from Sucker Punch, Factions 2 seems dead by now...
Couple of positive things, but thought this would have been the banger they were holding off for.
Where are the first party games? It's been almost two years and I'm dying of thirst over here... was there a single new game announced we didn't know about besides Bungie's new game??? Phantom Blade 0 had a phenomenal trailer, but there was barely anything exciting at this show ((
Wasn't the best I'd seen, but not the worst. Saw several things that caught my interest for sure. I didn't go in with much expectation, so harder to disappoint. Spider-Man 2 looks pretty awesome, though. And real excited about the new Cat Quest. XD
Bruh this was the worst showcase ever.
Last year’s was TOP TIER
Ryan made me laugh with his "We're innovative" only to announce the PS5's version of the Wii U 😅
I thought it was ok. Some games looked interesting but I was mostly just waiting to see more of Spider-Man 2, which looks amazing. But other than that it was just alright 🤷♂️
Everyone's like "that was bad!" and I'm just like DRAGON'S DOGMA TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
All of these upset responses really had their hearts set on specific things 😆 Metal Gear, Dogma, Marathon, and Spidey were enough for me to like this way more than previous showcases. VR segment was brief, no interruption from devs or announcers. I liked it a lot!
I try not to be a negative person so I'm going to be polite and say it was okay at best. I liked the look of everything coming to PSVR. Spiderman 2 looked cool other than the water physics which were pretty poor. I'm also excited for more info on Marathon and the handheld design for remote play looked awesome imo.
Other than that...
Edit - There was some exciting 3rd party mentioned, Alan Wake, Phantom Blade, Metal Gear, Ultros, and Dragon’s Dogma 2, but first party what happened?
Dragons dogma 2 saved it from being a complete disaster for me tbh... Was not expecting to see gameplay already but it looks just like the 1st game which is amazing!
Way way way too many indies and apparently these live service games for my liking. I thought I was watching a State of Play instead. I'm guessing the actual 3rd party big hitters are saving their reveals for Geoff's shows
Xbox Dudes are probably dying laughing righr now haha. They gonna have Starfield, Persona and more and PS got "Not Actual Gameplay" GaaS
Look there were quality games shown off, some of which I am super hype about, like Alan Wake 2, but I think there was an expectation we'd see more first party stuff and we just didn't. We saw two teasers from new acquisitions and Spider-Man 2 - which will be a very well made, safe game, that I will play in a year or two.
It wasn't a bad show, it just did not feel like a PlayStation showcase.
Eh.
Spider-Man 2 looks amazing though
Well.
If Sony wanted from me to buy a PS5, they failed.
Since best looking games were multiplats like MGS 3, Alan Wake II and Dragon's Dogma.
I think that hype around lack of Showcases really hurt this one.
Also. First-party presence outside of Insomniac was pathetic.
Really Sony? You have game from Firewalk coming in 2024 and you have shown a CGI trailer. Get the ***** out of here.
There were a few diamonds in the rough: Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Revenant Hill were the only things that got me rising up from my coma. Release date for Alan Wake 2 was also neat and I’m honestly more excited for the classic MGS games than the actual remake.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but there’s a decent chance Summer Game Fest might beat this presentation.
It was disappointing. Not one thing surprised me and a lot of the games just showed a trailer and told you nothing about what it is. There were games shown that I was already excited about and was going to get anyway, and the new games either looked generic or weren't exciting from the trailers. Spiderman 2 looks good but like I said, I was going to get that anyway. Give me a shock reveal for crying out loud!
You woulda told me a few weeks ago we'd get a showcase with Helldivers 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, MGS Snake Eater, Marathon, AZ Sunshine 2, and a bunch of sneak peaks at what Sony's newly acquired studios are doing (alongside the standards like FF16, RE, and Spidey) and that people would be LET DOWN and I'd have laughed in your face.
Holy hell, people. What are y'all on 'cause it's good and I want some.
Sure, I'd have loved to have seen Factions, but I'm also currently of the mind that'll be so big that it'll get its own State of Play when it's ready.
@Gamer_Guy genuinely shocked that no one is interested in Granblue. That looked fantastic.
I thought it was okay, 7/10. For first party stuff it was very underwhelming but I guess that's what happens when you give studios time to cook
It was really bad.
If you really break it down, there was next to NO first party stuff, several already revealed stuff, live service cinematic trailers, and some 3rd party games that look interesting for sure, but still..... this was i think on trend for sony but it being more than just a 30 minute show and being full of such nonsense, is not a good look....
my expectations were low and thus I genuinely expected to be surprised, but it didnt. Dragons Dogma is a plus and Alan Wake looked cool, but it honestly feels like Sony just nabbed a few short little-substance weak reveals which we will see in more detail in better shows in the coming weeks....
Are you lot even playstation gamers? I thought that was a great showcase of games coming out. I was well entertained for the hour. Exactly what I expected to see.
@ShogunRok Exactly this 😂 I'm thinking the exact same.
Dragon's Dogma II and Granblue Fantasy. Couldn't be more hyped.
This was probably the worst Playstation showcase I can remember. They showed nothing of interest to me that was new. There was nothing making my PS5 purchase worth the price of admission. I can't believe they had so little to show they had to throw in a new trailer for the GT movie. Honestly... this was pathetic after two years of silence.
Is Xbox going to have a better show than PS? The answer right now is actually maybe.
I’m not a fan of the format of showing trailer after trailer without any presenter in between. It feels really impersonal.
For me personally a big let down, besides Spider man. Phantom blade, metal gear, which had no gameplay!! VR stuff rubbish, spent £530 for beat saber !! Supposedly all about PS5 yet PS4 cross gen games again. No Astrobot no surprise!!
Spider-Man 2 looks way worse than first one, I am actually worried.
5/10. Where was Wolverine??? Where was Naughty Dog’s next project?? No Metal Gear Gameplay footage? No Ghost of Tsushima 2?! Spider-Man 2 was really the only true big hitter. Yes there was Assassin’s Creed mirage but thats multiplat
Wow im not gonna lie im surprised by this negativity. Guess everyone believed the leaks. There was lots on show here and it was definitely the best ending to a showcase for a while
I said ok. It needed to be an absolute banger after a year and a half - a problem of Sony's own making. If they had run that last September i think the reaction would have been different. There were some good reveals but gelt like Sony was going through the motions.
Spiderman was expected to be good, but there were no real surprises and a lot of CG only trailers. I feel we know next to nothing of Haven's title - and even less of Firewalks.
If i'd invested in VR 2 i'd be very disapointed in that offering too. More FNAF? Come on. Thats not shifting hardware.
Where on Earth was Factions. You can't honestly tell me that was held back for Geoff.
There were just no real surprises either. I cant help but feel disapointed. Perhaps its my fault for hyping it up in my head too much, but something just felt off.
That Square Enix rip off of splatoon didnt look great, and the EA game was very generic.
Where was Stellar Blade, Lost Soul Aside, Astrobot, Bend Studio, Silent Hill so many other titles that could have been there.
6/10
Best stuff looked the PSVR2 games. Great to see RE4 looks like the full VR mode. Crossfire, Arizona Sunshine 2 and Synapse look brilliant too. No Astrobot though! Or Factions for that matter.
I gave it an "Okay" grade. Kind of disappointing after all this time. Was hoping to see Twisted Metal and Factions.
Only thing that grabbed me was Alan Wake 2, which looks gorgeous, but I'm worried just won't be fun.
The Spidey trailer made me less interested/hopeful. Lots of on-rail segments shown off. Uninspired designs and art direction and, am I crazy, or was that a pretty noticeable graphical downgrade?
Marathon's trailer was stylish, but I know nothing of the franchise and am not much of a Bungie follower. I'll keep an eye on it though.
These comments are honestly hilarious, people calm down, get a grip, touch some grass. It was not that bad
That was completely uninspired. No fun at all and so many games that just felt the same as something 5 minutes earlier.
I genuinely wonder why I don't have a switch at times like this, if only because everytime I watch a Direct there is at least something that gets me excited.
This was a corporate nightmare of overly detailed, glossy, neon, partical effect filled repitition.
That was SOOOOOO bad. Granblue Fantasy Relink was the only good thing in there for me personally with maybe two other eyebrow raisers.
Personal tastes aside...I am objectively really concerned about Playstation now. If this is all thier 2023 has to offer...OUCH. what is going on over there??
@Pleasance the stream was 1080p and had a lot of artifacting. Wait for the 4k YouTube upload
That was truly awful. Everyone expected Metal Gear and Final Fantasy, Spider Man 2 graphically looked like a PS4 game and they showed the entire game nearly. And who the hell is going to buy a PS5 only streaming device? Who??. Marathon was the only exciting game and that’s been know about for ages.
The lack of first party stuff is a little bit concerning. 3 multiplayer games announced none of which look interesting, Spiderman 2 saved the day as usual. Also don't like this trend of so many indie games having a major presence at a showcase like this.
Probably the worst ever showcase from PS imo.
The third party stuff ( MGS, Alan Wake 2, Dragon's Dogma 2) were good but such kind of announcements were too little.
My expectations weren't super high to begin with. Yet, I was very much looking forward to it. Disappointing showing from 1st party overall. I would have expected at least one more reveal from one of the top studios.
As a PS fan, I’m pretty sure Xbox stands a good chance of having a better show.
This was a genuine let down. I expected a lot more. WTF was the Firewalk cg stuff? Very disappointing.
It was ok. Some good stuff there like the MGS stuff, FFXVI and Spider-Man 2 but the showcase furthered my concerns that Sony's literally going all in on live service and leaving traditional single player behind (all the PS Studios games here except Spider-Man 2 were live service).
My initial impression was that I expected more big things from Sony. That said, just based on this, I'll have enough exciting games to play for the rest of the year so it can't have been that bad!
Biggest surprise was Ghostrunner 2, loved the first one.
PSVR 2 games are starting to look really good too.
Also, brb, downloading Beat Saber.
Personally the RE4 PSVR2 preview made me very happy, since RE8 was one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Other than that pretty meh.
@DNortonX They were hardly going to show Wolverine! Insomniac are working on getting Spiderman ready for Xmas. What are they gonna show with Wolverine, another 2 min cinematic. Let Spidey breathe and get released, Wolverine will come later. Factions and Astrobot on the other hand you would have expected.
I guess I'm too easily pleased 😂 I loved that show.
The best I've seen in the last few years, since the one where they revealed Demon's Souls.
They showed me;
I would have liked to see Behemoth, but I got Granblue Fantasy and Dragon's Dogma so I won't complain about that.
TBH I'm feeling a little pampered right now.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
It was a 5 out of ten at best.
The vast majority of games we saw today have been announced for years at this point and we have been bombarded with trailers and interviews about them.
The legitimate announcements were either indie titles or third parties that have been heavily rumored.
The only things that saved this from being an utter disaster was Spider-Man 2 and the MGS Remake and Master Collection Vol 1.
@Yinx I said that about RE7 on PSVR1. Bloody incredible.
@theMEGAniggle I lost connection twice and I have really good broadband. It happens every time. I missed most of the Assassins Creed trailer.
Not even a release date for SM2…
Waste of time imo. Should put the spiderman gameplay in summer game fest show
I thought it was alright, but not a lot of it appealed to me particularly.
Full of Cinematics for the first party, And indies and third party multiplatform games for the rest? You'd think it was a Microsoft showcase 😕
Sony definitely failed with this one, hopefully there's a second showcase later in the year, or maybe something at summer games fest.
I don’t think I could give more than a 6/10, and that’s being generous. So disappointed, what were they thinking when organizing this? That we don’t want to see first party content? And after almost 2 years of keeping quiet? They have some explaining to do, my goodness. I need to go for a walk lol, that was a travesty.
Gran Blue Fantasy, Dragon Dogma 2 and a few indies were cool! I thought it was ok, most people here being a bit dramatic…a bit disappointed in no team Asobi and no Stellar blade update.
It kinda felt like a Xbox show at times for the sheer amount of shooters, though
Apart from Spider man 2, Phantom Blade 0, maybe MGS and a couple of meh others, very disappointing show.
Desperately missing the influence of Shawn Layden and Shuehi Yoshida. PS5 mid-gen is the worst thus far. SP2 still looks like a PS4 game. I hate to be critical, but after 2 years they should have blown the doors open. I expect more frequent State of Plays and Showcase's this year but my PS5 will continue to collect dust for now.
Voted terrible. After two years of waiting this ugly Gordon Ramsey gave us a lot of third party and almost no first party and VR2 love. I just purchased a PSVR2 and hoped to see Astro or something.
Things I’m excited about are:
Helldivers 2
Final fantasy 16 (launching near my bday)
RE remake VR mode (but was it full VR or not?)
Spider-Man (other first party companies should be ashamed of themselves how much insomnia kicks their ass)
Arizona sunshine (but again where is Astro?)
I give it an okay simply because I know Final Fantasy 16 & Spider-Man 2 will be bangers.
But that was not great, lots of mid level games, and I wonder how all of the people who said their live service mission wouldn't impact their output feel now, because that was a lot of live service and not a lot of single player, and the worst part, the service games didn't look very good either.
I think it was okay. The only things that carried it was the MGS3 remake announcement, new FFXVI trailer, SF6 one was not too bad, and Spider-Man 2 at the end was good. The gadget UI looks quite odd and I thought the Alan Wake II trailer was nice. I'm not a big VR fan so I wasn't blown away by any of the PSVR2 announcements. Not terrible but not great either so I'd say its in between.
There goes that brand momentum!
That showcase felt like the first real glimpse into Sony's GaaS-centric future, and it made for a really depressing sight. CG trailers and sci-fi shooters everywhere, but little in the way of gameplay and games with their own distinct personality to stand out from the crowd.
This showcase was a flop through and through. It so easily could've been a slam dunk given how quiet Sony's been the past couple of years, but they well and truly botched it here.
I'm there for Arizona Sunshine 2. They need some triple A VR titles soon though.
It was ‘ok’ I understandably know it’s definitely not to everyones taste there were a few that stood out but what it really lacked was an insight into many first party studios, there wasn’t really much of a showcase for VR I expected there to be something along the lines of Half life alyx to really drive some sales to the device… I guess the agenda was they are pushing with indies and releasing variety but it did feel like there was a void to be filled, something was definitely missing and I think 2 years of silence should really have kicked a notch especially because of the Microsoft Activision acquisition recently.
Many were simply teasers with minimal information about them in particular. I’d say 6/10 for me honestly.
Disappointing ... nothing more than 2 State of Play back to back.
The only games I was glad to see were The Thalos Principle 2, Spider-Man 2 and the next Assassin's Creed.
The rest of the show was a complete letdown.... a lot of games that we're waiting to find out more about were not even mentioned in passing... instead we got a lot of forgettable or uninteresting titles (a foam gun game? what a ... and a pirate cat game ... really? you can't even give that to a 6 year old, he/she'll tell you where you can stick the gamepad...).
if this is phase 2 of the PS5 then I'm out. Except for Spider-Man 2 an absolute disappointment!
@Shepherd_Tallon Well you can't please everyone lol I thought the third party reveals were very very good and saved the show, but sony needed more than teasers, they have games that should be coming sooner than those games teased, so surely they could of shown them instead.
PSVR2: D- (RE4 in VR is cool to have, the rest eh)
Indies: The best offerings. A+ SSS rank.
Spiderman/first party: Looks fine enough. B+ It's good but it's not for me.
Third parties: A fair mix of good and many bad C
Handheld: F- or Z ranking even. Waste.
RPGs looked good (not ones I care for but are they good IPs and direction yes even if just CGI trailers still Dragon's Dogma, FF16 and more are nice to see presented again), Square's foam Splatoon like game is eh is it a cool idea yes do I see it flopping as some multiplayer live service yes. I think the concept deserves better use. Bungie's Marathon is an old name but maybe live service this game is than what Marathon was in the past ok (I hope not but they make Destiny and had success so I doubt it wouldn't be something similar)...... Spiderman 2 looks great.
Am I going to play any of them no they aren't for me so this showcase wasn't anything I cared for which is fine. A lot of good games in here for other people to enjoy.
I'm sticking with Nintendo (besides my PS4/Xbox One for third parties and retro consoles still getting games for them) and going to be happy with Pikmin 4 thanks when it releases. Besides that Atlas Fallen and Immortals of Aveum (seen enough of it besides the showcase to know I care about it) if they are good enough and on PlayStation or Xbox I haven't made my mind up yet.
PSVR2 games were not interesting so I feel like it doesn't have enough good reasons for the headset yet (RE4 VR is cool and glad Capcom is supporting it but it and the others are not for me personally).
A handheld idea no one asked for. Switch/PC handhelds look good still. Cloud and remote play is a good 'option' but not it's only use. Why a paperweight....... Who asked for this device. If the Android grips were advertised in this showcase like they were prior to it then I'd be fine with that. But no ecosystem like android like the cloud handhelds on the market so why would we want a paperweight. No new digital only handheld even (I prefer physical but a digital handheld with games made for it I'd be fine with existing at least). The Vita made it clear they won't have studios downscale games anymore it seems well that's that then. I'll just use my phone or PS4 remote play instead.
Gran Turismo trailer why we already saw it weeks ago why show it. Also a game movie trailer why is it here in this showcase.
Honestly is it a fine showcase in some areas yes many Indies were cool, many bigger were good enough some gameplay, some CGI, some dates/periods mostly announcements/teases though, Grandblue Fantasy Relink showing up was nice to see and Winter is something at least, others not even. That handheld bugs me so much. Glad the Switch and Steam Deck/PC handhelds exist instead. Or Cloud handhelds with Android so they are still usable.
Legacy Sony IPs of the past that can be revived that have a mature audience like SOCOM, Killzone, Warhawk/Starhawk, Resistance and more it seems are dead. Even a Pursuit Force game that isn't the past ones to show off something more interesting then the heist one at the beginning (at least they are on the Deluxe/Premium service then stuck on PSP/Vita).
Will I play any of these games no because they don't appeal to me but do to many other people clearly and more power to those audiences for some good RPGs, Spiderman 2, Indies and more they look great.
It was okay, so many shooters but they don't appeal to me personally so they're pretty meh in my book. MGS3 remake + HD collection was the highlight for me and while the release date wasn't specified, I'm glad Grand Blue Fantasy Relink will finally get a winter 2023 release (I hope there are no delays).
Tower of Fantasy coming to PS5 seems to fly under everyone's radar but understandable and lastly, Spider-Man 2, which looks really good.
Overall, this was a pretty mid presentation. Lots of games but not really worth the hype.
@VanguardKaiser
Yes, I’ve been a PlayStation gamer for close to 30 years. Which is why I’ve played a slightly less shiny version of every game in that showcase. If I hadn’t had a PlayStation and was coming from Xbox or Nintendo I would be more excited by it I guess.
They had a chance with PSVR2 and they f***e* it.
@theMEGAniggle I know it's madness isn't it! They don't have to show all their games at once and blow their load.... Apparently it's bloody hard to make video games, and takes bloody ages and lots of resources to do so. 😃 They are doing fine.
@JSnow2 My gut already said onoo when it started with that Haven game which seems a carbon copy of rainbow six siege… ooh and I forget the square enix splatoon copy 🤮
It is disappointing, the single only game of PS Studios that I’m interested in is Spider-Man 2, the WORST thing about this was watching the PS Studios intro followed by a generic multiplayer game, and with yesterday’s news it’s looking really bad.
@UltimateOtaku91 tbf, some gameplay from one of the new first party games would have crowned it all. That's the one thing that was missing.
Then again as I type this I can't help but think of that fantastic Spider-Man gameplay. And I guess the counter to that is, we've already seen Spidey gameplay in the last game. 🤷
@SuntannedDuck2 What RE4 VR is not interesting!! Crossfire looks brilliant too.... Missing Astrobot though.
Wow. Xbox been down for the count but Sony just haymakered themselves on the chin.
@__jamiie somehow Sony just made Redfall no longer the biggest disappointment of the month. That was a lame show after skipping a show last year.
Not gonna lie pretty disappointing. Of course Spidey2 looks great. MGS Snake Eater and the MGS collection vol 1 saved the show from being even more disappointing. Guessing Death Stranding 2 is on Geoff Keighleys show and TLoU Factions MP most likely getting its own SoP or is also on Geoffs show too. I dunno maybe they're holding out for new game reveals next year when games are more ready for reveals or many games just ain't nowhere near ready at all
The main problem I think was that it was all predictable.
Maybe if we knew nothing about MGS3 remaster, it would have hit hard.
Disappointed in what Haven showed what seems to be a generic PVP live service game.
Spider-man is great but completely expected.
At least one PS5 exclusive surprise that is not a GaaS would have been great.
A bit of a dissapointment in all fairness. A few good things but the rest was just OK.
@Terry12 reading the comments you'd think there was nothing on show. I am disappointed to not have seen factions but oh well. That was literally the only thing I thought they would show and didn't
Too many people living in fantasy land. There's still the summer games show and next year to come. One thing I really didn't like was the GT trailer. Like why, such a mood kill.
Without the presentation of Astro Bot 2 or Alyx, PSVR2 can be assumed to be technical KO. It will be replaced with the next halfhearted gadget, a DualSense with a built-in oversized display between the grips and the need for a very good internet connection. Laughable.
I enjoyed the thing with the cat walking through the dark woods.
No Astro?
We riot.
@KaijuKaiser If one mediocre showcase is all it takes for them to give up on playstation then maybe it's best they go, don't need fake fans like that.
Although wherever they go it won't any better 🤷
After playing a game like Tears of the Kingdom for the past 10 days I think Sony should be worried. Their games look so dull and devoid of any inspiration. It's all the same old stuff with shiny bits tacked on. It's just won't cut it for me anymore.
I'm sure they'll be fine with the loyal fan base prepared to buy anything they release, but it's time for me to sit their games out for a good few years. I'm so bored of it all, especially at £70 a pop. I'm sure GTA6 will be worth it and a few other titles, but man has this gen been stale as all hell when it comes to Playstation. Shame, as it started quite well with Returnal.
@KaijuKaiser We waited two years for a lot of third party. Next time just push out a state of play instead of an event of which expectations due to Sony’s silence where sky high.
Despite some promising looking games (RE4VR, DD2, Phantom Blade etc) that was pretty disappointing overall.
XBOX has a real chance to shine now and same with Meta for VR.
@ItsBritneyB_tch that assassin's creed showing was funny to me. Looks incredibly cross gen and also looked heavily like AC Unity X Black Flag. I guess that's what we asked for 😂
Really disappointing, we waited over 600 days for this. What a joke.
It was good, 11 or so games I’m interested in but I got to say the high expectations and endless bitching that now surrounds these showcases kind of kills them for me, so I think I’m gonna skip all of them going forward
@VaultGuy415 really miss the old management
It was pretty meh overall outside of a few highlights.
For me Microsoft can have Activision Blizzard. I invested a lot in the PS5 and just two weeks in PSVR2 but it seems Sony only has either third party or GAAS games (except Spider-Man). Shame really… also got really irritated that they showed the GT movie..
@Old-Red games take a really long time to make so if they got anything magical line returnal it's gonna take a while to cook.
That being said, it definitely should've been a state of play because not many reveals were shown. Plus Sony's fault everyone has big expectations. When you stay silent like this, any movement will cause excitement
It was...pretty underwhelming to be honest. The 3rd parties kind of carried it. No Last of Us Factions or Stellar Blade was highly disappointing. Just not nearly enough 1st party stuff.
Metal Gear and Assassins Creed along with a few others excited me but I was just really let down by absolutely no Factions again.
So wait, I thought it was Xbox that has no games?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner exactly, its like everyone expects whatever sony does to be 10/10 wether its showcases, games or tech etc
I don't know what fantasy world some people live in but no company is that perfect, there's worst alternatives out there.
It was a good showcase. I spoiled myself getting in to hyped. Seems like they're still holding back for some reason. I expected to see more from the first party studios to be honest, they've been building up the last weeks with social media posts and didn't show that much. They should have called it just a state of play. Maybe we will get something this summer.
Good.....night Nauthy Dog.
Sleep well
It was meh, mgs remakes were cool, dragons dogma, and re4 vr cool and finally a date for AC mirage anything else I've already forgotten.
No cyberpunk dlc footage
No ff16 demo announce
No death stranding 2
With at the foam party game..really?
No Ghost 2?
No lou multiplayer
@Old-Red bro fr, if it was not for FF16 i would be saving money for the next nintendo console instead of buying a ps5, how can they keep releasing amazing first party games like crazy while ps5 "phase two" looks like... this...
I was pretty disappointed but my expectations were, admittingly, way too high. Spider-Man 2 looks friggen incredible. So hyped for that! But no FF7 Rebirth, Death Stranding 2, Persona/Like A Dragon, Stellar Blade (so shocked by this one. I hope it isn’t delayed), Bloodborne 2/Remake/Remaster or Hades 2 tremendously disappointed me. Like obviously not all of those would be shown- but damn. Again, my expectations were too sky high. That’s on me
I think Sony made a huge mistake here by not showing more first party games. In fact it should have been massively dominated by their own internal Studios. All the 3rd party games could easily have been kept for State of Plays. Factions should have been shown, Santa Monica’s new game should have been shown, it’s just a huge missed opportunity. Sony had a real chance to give gamers something positive to speak about with Microsoft’s own show a few weeks away. I except that to be a hellova lot better than this.
Welp, that was genuinely the worst showcase they have ever done. Bungie saved the day for me, and Spider-Man 2 looked very good as expected. Very, very disappointed by this. The only thing not totally bumming me out by the future of PlayStation is that we still don’t know what the rest of their big first party studios are up to.
@theMEGAniggle
I sort of agree and disagree
It was mmmmmm Meh!?!?!?!
I mean the games shown were pretty good, I enjoyed the look of quite alot and it was game after game after game. But.... and its a huge but!!!
This was a Sony Showcase, not a state of play.
They have so many first party Studios, still in the dark of what they are working on and all we got from them was the 2 new studios, which had 0 gameplay.
Havens game seems to be a co op heist shooter, but still just CGI and then was it Concord??
What was the actual point of that trailer??? I'm still sat here thinking is it just dlc for flight simulator being back the concord, that trailer did nothing.
And the finale game was Spiderman 2? A game we already know ia coming pretty soon.
A showcase for playststion should be full to the brim with first party developers.
Where was astro?
Where was SuckPunch?
Where was Bend?
Cory Barlogs new game?
And where was Nauggty Dog, the godfather of playstation.
Cgi snippets? Gameplay? A short message from the developer to tell us? A Title screen for goodness sake.
PsVR games, basically just firdt person shooters no variety.
All in all a great show, but a meh showcase.
Thats my take.
A top quality dhoe
Shockingly bad especially for VR2, the only saving grace for both flat and VR was the near total absence of first party studios.
Helldivers needed a VR mode.
@thefourfoldroot1 Don't quite understand your re4 Vr mode comment, it is the whole game so similar to village Vr.
Ps. Fingers crossed the trophies aren't locked out this time.
It was okay but nothing amazing
I'm disappointed but I was hoping for some real long shots like Persona 6, Persona 3 remake, and a remake for another Final Fantasy game. The only two absences that I feel where a problem were Stellar Blade and FF7 Rebirth, though I say that with some apprehension as we've had too many rushed games released these past few years. There were too many live service games for my liking but there was a good amount of variety over all which I always like to see. I'm also happy they gave at least some time to tech stuff like PSVR2 and the new playstation handheld.
@CaptD
Are you sure about that. Why would they call it VR mode if that were the case? Great news if so.
And yes, if no trophies I won’t play it, as I didn’t Village once I got passed the village and realised I’d been stitched up.
Edit: you are correct, full main mission as per the blog. Good news. I’ll delete my first comment. Still very badly worded for the trailer and indicates no trophies, which is a game breaker for me.
@WizzNL Maybe we get a tlou multiplayer state of play in october or november? best case scenario now
I miss the old, colourful action-adventure platformers like Sly, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter. Wish Sony would make something like that again. Astro’s Playroom was such a breath of fresh air (and one of my favourite PS5 games). It captured the magic of those other games but Sony just don’t seem interested in making them.
This is kind of what I feared:
Sony came out swinging at the start of the PS5 and now “true PS5” first-party stuff from its best studios are going to be a while off.
Insomniac seems to be the one picking up the slack with Spider-Man 2 and eventually Wolverine.
Sword of the Sea was a standout as it had all the vibes of Journey.
Snake Eater was more a matter “when” not “if”.
I find most of it to be great, we have a good (exclusive I believe) RPG this winter with granblue, of course spiderman 2 is a great fall release...we have another big RPG release in June with ff16....I'm not sure when helldivers 2 is dropping but with the change to TPS it looks like that new starship troopers game that just released and that (ATM) is incredibly fun.
Overall, it's Xbox time to shine given the lackluster 3? Years of nothing burger since it launched....Nintendo...I don't know what they have but the only thing interesting was totk and that just dropped...so I'm assuming their next showcase will be "mid" like everyone is saying this one was.
I couldn't be a bigger Playstation and even Sony fan. That was so general audience focused it made me roll my eyes. Someone really needs to innovate in game development. These games that we love Playstation for are just taking too long.
2016 may never be topped smh...
Phantom Blade, new game from Giant Squid, Spider-Man 2 (no release date and felt a bit more of the same like GOWR but that’s ok) and some indies have my interest. Although I always lower my expectations, this was not very good overall. Missed Naughty Dog & SuckerPunch tbh …
MGS with a Bond theme 😄? Foamstars, a Splatoon clone from SE? And stop showing PC footage in a PS5 show.
At least good for my wallet and still enough games to play …
@UltimateOtaku91 When redfall is not looking that bad than Sony has a problem … Also look at the content Nintendo has just pushed out (Zelda is massive)
I think the biggest disappointment is that this just shows Sony gives little F's. This felt like something scrambled together in a boardroom where they were checking diversity of genre boxes, without even asking themselves, is any of this good or reflective of that Brand power we boast about?
We are not really ANY more informed on what the first party future holds for PS5.
You can justify and make excuses and continue that self-defeating prophecy all you want. That is your right. Yet, it's pretty hard to ignore how little first party games were shown, how little gameplay was shown, and how little there were in terms of actual release dates. This is Sony now. Thats not even touching on the terrible PSVR2 showing for those that hopped on that hype train.....
Yeah this was disappointing. The games are ok but not what I was hoping for and not what I think PS needs to cement themselves. 1st Party is still a big question mark.
@Bez87 that's the thing. You call it a showcase, people expect a showcase. No word from asobi, bend, SP, ND. Those studios at least have something to announce. And now it'll lead people to think the next one will be great and then only a few of those studios will show.
I think Sony needs to handle the communication better. Temper expectations because we don't know what's happening, and that's leading to us thinking there's a reason for them being quiet, it's because they want to surprise us. But there is no surprise, it's just nothing to show :/
Ok, second try after some blog updates: 4/10
The Resi4 VR “mode” is the full game, but being labelled a mode indicates no trophy campaign, as per Village, which is a dealbreaker for me. Most won’t care though.
Beat Saber being a free upgrade and also releasing tracks from the greatest rock band of all time is the second plus.
Arizona Sunshine may be OK.
Everything else…played it already.
Wasn't what i was expecting it to be. It was just okay for me. I would give it a c+ or b-
@thefourfoldroot1 Positive, it says so right on the blog, worded as "full main story"
Free as well.
I do agree that all this "mode" talk seems unnecessary double speak and I can only think they say it to avoid the fact that it isn't 100% playable in VR (i.e. Mercenaries, possible dlc etc...).
Erm was one of the worst...psvr 2 future looks bleak from that....most the best games here are 3rd party most likely multi platform games....from first party it was poor
@Sanquine Lol every game sony showed today will still end scoring better than Redfall.
That was pathetic.
I was very underwhelmed given the hype generated around this showcase. I'm left wondering if the ABK deal had been approved in the UK what sort of show we would have had here. I feel they're STILL holding back.
@Sanquine Agree about Nintendo though, they are on a roll this year and are the best console/games maker for me.
Nothing xbox or playstation show is topping zelda.
I think State of Play is just not exciting to me. This one was especially me overall. I think the concept itself doesn't make me care about the games at all and never has at this point.
@UltimateOtaku91 I never imagined Microsoft and Nintendo beating Sony in output. Seems COVID really hit hard…
Is this the feeling MS fans have normally? ..
People read way too many fake rumor sites then come here say they are upset because it didn’t happen. Wolverine was never going to be there
Phantom Blade and Alan Wake 2 look amazing! Looking forward to Plucky Squire and FFXVI I guess. I’d like to try the Cat Quest games. Otherwise not a lot of interest
Liked the look of phantom blade 0, Neva and ultros, given my back log and other 3rd party games I've wishlisted that was more than enough for me for the foreseeable.
I'd struggle to call that showcase mediocre, let alone 'best ever.' Extremely disappointing.
@UltimateOtaku91
I think your missing the point a little, yes some comments are taking it to the next level.
But this was a Playstation Showcase not a State of Play.
After Phase one has been completed and we are moving forward into the next phase of games from first party studios. I would expect it to be a first party mega show.
A round up of what there internals have been up to, doesnt have to be dates or full gameplay but a logo, a cgi trailer, a comment from developer.
Non of the big hitters or any actually turned up we didn't even know about. The ones who did, 2 new first party devs unproven to us with nothing but cgi trailers, showing nothing of what the game is about, apart from 1 and then we got Spoerman 2, which we already know about.
I dont think anyone who comments saying they are disappointed are wrong.
When a showcase is shown to have 90% third party games, 9% exclusive games and 1% is actually Sony internal studio games.
You can't deny that 99% of these games couldn't of just been part of a stae of play.
@Sanquine Yes 😂 they did go 14 months without an AAA first party.
Nintendo are the only consistent ones even though they have less studios.
“We’re going for total mindshare….” Proceeds to show nothing extraordinary.
Should’ve split this up into 2 State of Plays instead. Here’s hoping we see something good at Keighley’s show.
@theMEGAniggle 100% agree this was a state of play with the added dramatics of the intermissions and dramatised music.
We all know spiderman will be good if not great. From a showcase I want surprises I want one last thing.
They went years without a showcase, what would another one do so we could see them all together hit after hit after hit first party.
What they showed was great but not a showcase great
That was shockingly bad. They showed basically no first party games beyond Spider-Man. This had to be seen as a disaster.
One of my favorite game of all time is receiving a sequel, The Talos Principle, so for me this game alone would make this a great presentation. With Spider Man 2, AC Mirage and GranBlue, it has become an amazing presentation.
Me expectations weren't particularly high so I didn't really find it disappointing. I was hoping for a nice big surprise announcement that would get some excitement up but it didn't happen. Maybe they are still not quite willing to show their full hand yet.
@Bez87 I don't disagree, I even said it was mediocre in terms of first party but some of the people saying they've lost faith in sony and have give up on the brand is a bit extreme. Also a bit disrespectful to the other studios who's games were shown today especially the indies which looked great but will read comments on social media saying it was a s**t show, will be a low blow for them for sure.
But yes, Sony themselves need to make up for their poor first party showing, maybe the backlash will force them to do a second showcase towards the end of the year.
Best? No, it was awful, one of, if not, THE WORST showcase I've ever seen. There was almost no first party content, the saving grace was literally Spider-Man 2.
If you don't have any big guns to shoot then simply don't shoot.
If this was a State of Play people would be more forgiving.
Not bad but not great. Give it a B.
All Xbox fanboys are calling it bad but we all know if this was their show they would scream A+.
Forgot to watch it. So did I win?
@Sanquine RIGHT?? I was fully expecting Astrobot on VR2 to be shown here and didn't feel that was a tall order. Truly terrible.
The best thing of “the big showcase” was MGS 3… a remake… the state of play is sad indeed.
At this point, I'd say PS5 is the worst non-portable Playstation to ever be released. It's the best PS4... essentially being a PS4 Pro Pro... but as a stand alone system... it's the worst Playstation; feeling completely unnecessary.
I won't criticize people who liked this, but I thought it was poor. Only a handful of actual 1st party exclusives. Pretty much carried by 3rd party, but this was a Showcase, not a 3rd party State of Play.
We still have no idea what a good portion of the studios are doing, nothing new exclusives wise to get excited about really as a lot of them we already knew about (just not a title in regards to Haven's game until now). Completely unacceptable when you stay silent this long and still show us very little. No Stellar Blade trailer and release window either even though it was added to the database on the PS Store a few days ago.
Yes, the Spider-Man 2 trailer was good, but we already knew it was going to be good. No release date still. Once again, no Stellar Blade. Assassin's Creed Mirage and Alan Wake 2 looked great and we got release dates, but again, 3rd party. Why does their exclusive output have to be so secretive still even in it's 3rd year? I feel bad for the 3rd party studios that get lumped into this, but it is what it is when Sony put their name on it as a Showcase and made us wait this long for one.
@Sanquine Bahaha good point. This must be how XBoxers feel all the time. Haha
Yeah, it was ok. Some games definitely caught my interest. But no Stellar Blade info was disappointing.
No Shenmue 4, boo Sony 😉
Phantom Blade Zero... Game of the show
(since mgs∆ was only prerendered)
The Plucky squire and dragons dogma 2 runner ups
Stellar Blade MIA
Ronin MIA
Like a dragon MIA
Tsushima 2 MIA
Fairgames DOA (kill it with fire)
Foamstars DOA
I was hoping for more on the VR front, as I just purchased a PSVR2. Beat Saber is always good, but having owned it on the PSVR, it will be more of the same with (hopefully) better controls. I was pretty disappointed in the lack of gameplay. And there were a lot of first party studios that didn't make the party. The fact that the ones that did were CGI trailers is not a good sign.
Just my .02
NOT ACTUAL GAMEPLAY
spooderman 2
Dragons dogma 2
Metal gear
Saved the day
I think its pretty clear they are permanently going down the road of (with exception of Spiderman) saving any detailed look at first party games for State of Plays. Which is why they perhaps were not shown much here. Announcing them here with CGI trailers imo would have been a bad idea.
Geoff Keighley has probably secured a couple for Summer Games Fest but outside of that id expect SoPs.
This one was mainly to showcase indies, third parties and the upcoming GaaS titles.
It was good for western sandbox/shooter players, but it wasn’t good for me. Nothing looked… fun. I’m not sold on FF16 yet as it looks very grey, SF6 may be good if we have a strong single player but I’m not convinced. I only smiled at the Plucky Squire. Playstation has lost something moving away from Japanese development.
@tameshiyaku I know foamstars what was that bollo*cks
That was Sony westernized the heck out of. Only DD2 got me giddy. Everything else was very unlike Sony. Jim Ryan destroying the legacy of Sony
There are to many live service games. Most of these flops and you’d think square Enix wouldn’t make another one after Babylon falls flopped. Let alone copy the idea of splatoon!
Best games was Alan wake 2, Dragons dogma 2, ff16, Spider-Man 2 (however the graphics seemed a bit off hopefully was a early build) I liked the look of the phantom 0 thingie! But I was left feeling underwhelmed. Conferences also need to stop putting adverts/movie trailers in!
Every game in this showcase actually looked pretty good, the indie's look interested and I don't usually play a lot of indies.
The third party games all looked good. Phantom Blade 0 was a shock in a good way but that isn't coming this year.
It was a really good show for me especially with the Spider Man 2 gameplay and MGS 3. Sword in the Sea and Neva looked amazing too.
I get people will be mad that we didn't see First Party games besides Haven and Firewalk(besides Spider-Man and Hell Divers(which isn't a first party but is being published by Sony)), but give the Live Service games a chance until you actually see gameplay. I feel like everyone is overreacting lol.
Also Granblue Fantasy release time window finally lol.
I'd give it a 8/10.
@Bez87 oof can you imagine the state of these fans if they went another year without showing anything. I do agree that would've been the better option but if you're Sony you got to keep engagement up somehow eh?
I'm sure we'll see state of plays showing off gameplay for haven studios game and concord but it was just an announcement.
I guess we're all forgetting that at the last showcase we saw a teaser for GOW Ragnarok before they showed it off in the state of play. Maybe that's their tactic on new game announcements
The symbols looked nice..
Definitely interested in Dragon’s Dogma 2–Capcom has been killing it lately.
MGS stuff is great, but nothing truly new.
Was really hoping for some Wolverine, as well as way more first party stuff.
Overall a bit disappointing… It’s backlog-thirty
The poster child for “meh.” A few standouts but man was this underwhelming. Where is Naughty Dog? What is Blue Point Studios doing? Where are the exclusive heavy hitters to look forward to? Jim Ryan is missing the beat big time.
I thought it was really good but I’m probably in the minority. We got some fantastic looking indie and 3rd party games. In terms of first party output I’m fine with it slowing down a bit. Only glaring omission on that front was TLOU factions which should be getting close.
@theMEGAniggle I get that games take time, but when I see decisions like Japan Studios being shuttered cause they don't make crazy money, I just feel bored of what's on offer. A few titles like Puppeteer, Bloodborne or Gravity Rush to break up the monotony would really have gone a long way these past couple of years. I think Jim Ryan's been shortsighted by ignoring the impact of innovative games, even if they're developed at a slight loss.
I lost an hours worth of Zelda time for this. The Samurai game looked cool SM2 and MGS3 but the rest looked crap.
They held back again which makes sense since they have no incentive. It was a well paced, general showcase so it would work on the general public, which was probably what they were going for, but frustrating for me since I wanted to see Sony's own projects.
Where is factions 2, I thought that was supposed to be coming soon.
Dog ****. 100% a reflection of how devoid of personality Jim and Hermen are. I could only speak up for a few games either because I played the first game or I played the beta of it in some way. Kaz, House, Tretton, Layden and Shu(in his PlayStation jail cell) are rolling over in there beds right now looking at how just unfun a lot of this crap looks.
Made me wonder why I bought a ps5. Creed looks good, Spiderman looks-different. Metal gear, snake eater wasn't that good originally compared to 2. Everything else was meh. 🥲
I went in with low expectations… I came out utterly disappointed
@tallythwack it's square Enix trying to appeal to young kids and genz. Give me another good RPG instead.
@Old-Red yeah definitely, not just him it's also Herman Hulst. But look if no one is playing it, if we're literally in the minority, the few million people that play it then really and truly it's a waste of money for them. That kind of cash loss would lead to major problems for them
But on the other hand, they rake in billions so what's a little loss eh. Those games like puppeteer and tearaway and gravity rush are genuinely what capture people's hearts and make memorable experiences. Those games still come but without the polish and marketing but this is why you can't limit yourself to one console
Sony is really playing with fire, this was one of their worst presentations ever.
I thought it was extremely poor personally.
What I’m most disappointed about is the lack of first party games and what appears to be limited support for the PSVR2.
I’m in the verge of selling mine tbh. The novelty has worn off and I just don’t use it.
I was hoping to see some of the VR future support from Sony tonight…….oh well.
@FenIsMightier
Ya know I’ve been wondering about that for years now. How much longer can we all keep this up?
Maybe the industry as a whole needs to dial it back a bit, drop budgets a little lower, and do more AA games.
Not every game needs a budget of 300 million. Perhaps 30-50 million with slightly lower production values.
Oh my…. This was actually a complete disaster! Why even bother with a showcase if you only gonna show 1 game and 3 cgi trailers of first party stuff? Come on…. This should have been a state of play. Even spiderman wasnt mindblowing in any way. Looked like the first game with some shadows and better water. Im sad now
As per usual we all worked ourselves up into a frenzy. Yes some of the things discussed over the last week or so didn't materialise....PSVR2 Astrobot & Last of Us Fractions 😡 but there's plenty there to keep us ticking over. There will still be other stuff getting announced. Overall I'd say it was a 7/10. Happy enough. MGS 😍
This is what happens when you push for live service games. 5 Playstation studios live service games and only 1 single player. Such a Trash showcase. Probably the worst one I've ever seen.
That show was awful
Helldivers 2, Phantom Blade 0, Ultros and that sand-surfing game were great to see.
RE4 being fully in VR is excellent news. Arizona Sunshine 2 has Dead Island vibes so that could be good. Crossfire could be good arcade fun.
As with the flat games though, I was hoping for more new announcements, especially from 1st party devs.
I'd give it a 7.
Reading through the comments it seems like people are more disappointed by what wasn't revealed, rather than what was. Okay there wasn't much first party stuff but there were still a lot of games there that looked good. Sony would have got stick if they showed games that were years away from release and people would be constantly looking for updates and then get frustrated if there were any delays.
I also think that we won't see anything of Wolverine until Spider-Man 2 is out. It would be pretty cool if Spider-Man 2 had some form of trailer for Wolverine that showed when you completed it, that would build up a bit of hype for me.
This showcase was 2 packs of hot ASS
I honestly loved it. Something for everyone. Indies carried the show for the most part, VR looked interesting & then we have the big hitters.
That Spider-Man 2 trailer was UC4 levels of epicness
I'm baffled by the people defending this showcase. There were some decent games, sure, but most of it is coming to other consoles and PC. Most of these games are indies. We didn't see anything that justifies the existence of the PS5, and we certainly didn't see anything resembling a plan from PlayStation. That's what this is, a PlayStation Showcase, not a "here are some random indie games" showcase.
Literally one of the worst showcase I've seen. We waited two years for this crap. Maybe I'm getting to old for games, but God the majority of the industry is so cringy nowadays.
Dragon dogma 2 and spiderman 2 made the show for me.word up son
Well, ended up watching it and I ended up going for poor.
The spider-man gameplay looks fantastic, but everything else was either meh. Too much cinematic/no actual game footage, not enough first party reveals, no date on Spider-Man 2...
So much for "phase two".
Liked to see some AC: Mirage impressions but that also, I think, was not in-game footage.
@Terry12 RE4 in VR is really cool like RE7 was. I'm not a horror/RE person at all so not going to play it. I do respect it and Capcom has done a great job.
Crossfire looks good but X flopped so I don't know what to think really. I do play many underrated games but I didn't play Crossfire X so I don't know how it actually was despite what was said about it.
I agree it was missing Astrobot or a London studio game.
Hot take for spiderman 2. That venom suit aint it. Not a fan of the extra textures and out of focus borders on the eyes. Hopefully they give us a comic accurate costume. It just needs to look like a black suit.
@truerbluer your faith? How many games do you actually BUY? It's often said that those with the highest expectations offer the least support.
@TripleEyeGaming imagine if Sony was putting on a show for those who have PSs or PCs. If you don't own the other platforms why does it matter? I guess you can't watch movies if they're streamed on multiple services either, huh? You guys constant complaining is really becoming insufferable. Either learn to make your own games or make the best out of what's offered. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I don't see where the problem is. Every person I know that does all this complaining only have what +/GP offers with an amazing limited collection purchased by them.
Review games and studio output after they've shipped, not with preview teaser videos.
PS5:For the...
playersSUCKERSIt was as I feared. Sony pivoting away from what the PlayStation started as to try and repeat past successes by chasing trends. Space shooters, Elden Ring look alikes, Cinematic experiences... it's depressing that the indies were the best part of the showing for me.
"The PS5 big guns arrive" LOL is this guy serious? there was 00 first party exclusives announced lol they only showed the same 2 exclusives we all knew about and SM2 still has no release date, 99% of games were PC + Xbox, majority indies lol where are the big guns you speaking about? 99% of 1sft party studios were absent lol
The showcase was a bore. Putting aside the titles I already knew about there were only like 2 or 3 games I found interesting.
GaaS/Live Service stuff isn't my thing, but I get why Sony would want some of the cash. The problem is that realistically, there can only be one or two GaaS that would be successful at a level Sony would want existing at the same time in gaming. It boggles the mind that they'd develop so many simultaneously. Especially judging by gamers' comments here and elsewhere, they're almost universally derided.
The rest of the PlayStation Showcase (not a State of Play, for those defending it) was bad.
PSVR2 is dead (well, mine is - it's seen 20 minutes of use) and absolutely should have released without the cable, regardless of cost.
The style of games that PS is synonymous with just don't seem to be on the horizon any more. I'm super disappointed.
Remakes, sequels, rip-offs and GaaS. What's good about that?
Sony commented that they have the highest level of brand momentum recently. They lost that here.
MGS, Alan Wake, and AC held my attention. The indies were interesting, but none of them had release dates. But even so, that’s overshadowed by the GAAS and generic anime game shell around it all. Curious about Marathon, I’ll admit, but that doesn’t mean I’ll buy it. As someone who’s not into superhero stuff too, Spider-Man being the only first party game was also off-putting. Sony somehow put Xbox in a position to rebound with this and a Nintendo Direct announcement would immediately make everyone forget the majority of this show, sadly enough.
It was Okay. Where are all the Big PS5 Exclusives???!!! More than half of those games are going to xbox, PC, and ps4. Such a shame. I wasn't excited at all about their "new" handheld device. Sure, it's cool for those that want it. But I'm passing on it. I'm saving up for a Nintendo Switch Pro or Nintendo Switch 2. As an owner of the PS5, I must say it was okay. Nothing to get all excited about, unless you're a die hard Spider-Man fan, which I'm not.
I honestly feel bad for the indie games that look absolutely amazing that were a part of this horrendous show.
I've been disappointed by some of Sony's shows, but this is the first show that made me actually mad. Really, after 18 months, that's it? What's a little more dust on my PS5, am I right?
It was the worst show from Sony in the past decade.
Crazy how they still not disclosing what their tentpole studios working on. I am still fuming cause I have expectations and they dont even meet the bare minimum. This just allows their competitors to comes back from the grave Sony was this close to burying them completely before this fumble.
I had a fun time watching with friends, but definitely bummed out that several of my highly anticipated games didn't make an appearance.
At least we have Final Fantasy 16 to look forward to on June 22, and Spider-Man 2 sometime in Fall 2023.
I'll never forgive them for not showing any Astro related title. This was bad.
@UltimateOtaku91 I totally agree that's abit extreme, and let's forget the showcase and look at the facts, there will be games, 90% of first party studios are still in the dark, we all know those games are going to come, if they are at the showcase or not.
But then on the other hand to put out a showcase, you would think they themselves had alot to show. But forgive me if I am wrong but we only saw 3 first party studios, 2 showed very short cgi trailer and they are the new blood, I expected more to prove to us they are at the calibre of first party and then we got Spiderman.
I'm hyped for spiderman and I know its going to be great but it did look like just more of the same.
Non of this was worthy of a showcase, in my eyes not when we've had 3 years of state of play.
Its just disappointing we still don't know what the next 3 years hold for first party. We know they are coming we just don't know what and we should.
@theMEGAniggle I'm not repeating what you said, that's my exact view on all this. I'm not crying, I'm jumping ship. You mentioned all the reasons why I have a PS5 and I'm still waiting for reasons to buy an xbox (hopefully there showcase shows me a reason to)
But to put a showcase out and show just 3 things 2 of which were cgi trailers, is unacceptable and not worth putting the heading showcase.
It was poor. Everyone else above who feel the same have mentioned all there is to say about it.
And surely someone at Push square soon have to write an article about the Elephant in the room; Factions! Where the heck is this game after all this time?(And ND as a whole. Where are their games?) And all other big games I thought would be coming to PS5 when I bought it almost two years ago ...
didnt Sony announce they aim to have two first party games out a year, how many first party games was people expecting!?
@Bez87 I wouldn't hold my breath for the Xbox showcase but here hoping they realise all people want to see are games. Not CGI
@anoyonmus Another Fnaf game is not a positive imo.
@Gamer_Guy There was a quite a bit I personally was hyped about.
Dragon's Dogma II, MGS Delta, MGS Collection etc. best one for me since Stellar Blade and Star Ocean got announced
That wasn’t a showcase, that was an extended State of Play, hopefully all the good stuff is being saved for Summer Game Fest.
@somnambulance While I do think there'll be a Nintendo Direct this summer given they're at Gamescom this time, in the outcome there isn't and the Xbox showcase ends up being a trainwreck it's entirely possible that Nintendo popularizes the approach of replacing summer showcases with just dripfeeding info on social media.
I actually was worried the moment I saw and heard Jimbo talk, he didn't seem convincing when saying 'this is what you all've been waiting for'. Yeah right, that cat game for one ...
Pushsquare: Was This Sony's Best PlayStation Showcase Yet?
Also Pushsquare: Sony Flubs First Proper PS5 Presentation in Over 18 Months
Don't they do a few of these shows each year? So they probably have more decent stuff to show later. Only games of interest on display to me were Spidey 2 and Phantom blade (which will probably never see the light of day). I'm on an ff16 trailer ban so it can all be fresh for when I play in the coming months.
@KaijuKaiser what leaks?
@theMEGAniggle o I know xbox are by far worse. They've not had any top first party games since the 360, even there big hitters have been ok to good apart from forza. Im not a huge fan if bhg ridden games like Bethesda put out.
Totally forgot Sony announced a handheld to go with the ps5. They've literally just showed that they have released the back bone for andriod.
So now we have both apple and andriod devices that can use the back bone paired with someone's large oled top market screens, to stream games from there PS5 and PlayStation thinks its best to throw there own one into it. It just seems pointless.
@z0d15g0d no, been almost two years since the last one
@gamer_since_83 Aren't the showcase and state of play the same thing? Showing off new and upcoming games?
@UltimateOtaku91 For sure it isn't MS or Atlus fault, here it is Sonys fault for not making a deal before Ms did.
Am I wrong, or they never used the word "exclusive", not once throughout the entire show?
Spiderman 2 with its dumb A.I, QTE fest, on rail segments 🤮
@twinspectre90 Majority of games have dumb AI due to their limited animation sets and skill trees it's how games are built. Fighting games on the other hand AI has the same available skills as the player.
@z0d15g0d We are seeing team investing their times in storytelling and graphics, while the real victim is the lack of investment into making enemies smarter.
You could see them looking at comrades being destroyed and they did absolutely nothing. I'm getting tired of seeing tough enemies with their "bad ass" attitude, then when it is time for the face off they become dumb and let you beat them with ease.
Hey, storytelling is the evolution of the industry.
Was literally going to step into my first current gen console tomorrow with a PS5 (being a Switch first fanboy for the past 4 years). The showcase has me watching Xbox vs PS5 comparison videos. Almost certain I'll be picking up a series X instead now.
@twinspectre90 I'm sorry but that was clearly being shown on the easiest difficulty. If you played on Ultimate or Spectacular difficulty on Spider-Man or Miles Morales you'd know the games AI is tough
@Bez87 I see the vision for that, they're giving people more options. I for one loved remote play on my Vita. I hate playing games on my phone. The Project Q thing would be perfect for people like me if I had more time for gaming. These days I'm okay with sitting in front of my TV every now and then rather than gaming on the go.
Too much ‘not actual gameplay’ footage, what is the point!
@AndyKazama yeah apart from Cats Quest, I also liked Dragons Dogma 2 and the new game from Night in the Woods dev.
@theMEGAniggle The same stuff happens with AC, people told me to play it on hardest difficulty and yet I was still disappointed by A.I and yes, I played Spiderman PS4 and still the A.I was dumb.
This is the reason I firmly believe story isn't the most important thing in Videogames, because of it the gameplay is suffering. Sony's first party use the magic of storytelling to hide the flaws.
For them is Hollywood über alles.
EDIT: Story is important, but it shouldn't be a replacement to what makes a game a game, the problem I have is Cinematic and a product that is trying to be a movie.
@Uncharted2007
I think I have to agree. I thought the first year was really good, and was even willing to give a pass on how much cross-gen stuff there was because of extenuating circumstances, but now, going on three years, there's no excuse for there not to be much more, and much better, current-gen only content, and the lack of great first party output aside from Insomniac has been extremely disappointing.
@Grumblevolcano If the Xbox showcase is also a train wreck, Nintendo would arguably win through silence.
This is why i just play what ever feels like fun and on what ever platform. I’ve been gaming for so long that almost nothing they put out on any platform is truly surprising and particularly interesting. But when I do finally pick up a lot of games i find them enjoyable. But that’s due to having no expectations for any of it. Keep gaming and remember that it’s a fun hobby and not what defines our life. Keep gaming!! It will all be ok.
It was great, brought many games we were expecting for ages to see gameplay footage.
Spiderman was pretty vacuous tbh. All that visual bombast hiding a very ordinary chase with minimum skill involved. The combat, which had been lifted straight out of Arkhan Asylum on the PS3, looked as shallow as the original. The third party games were fine but as a Showcase to what first party games are on the horizon for phase two it was mediocre at best.
@twinspectre90 Returnal is their best game this gen as it's gameplay is front and centre.
@theMEGAniggle maybe its because I am old and have kids, I like my games on a huge tv at the highest quality with my 3d headset once kids are in bed, I just can't understand a reason to play remote play within the same house but I guess a teenager where the parents have the console in the living room and don't have access.
But most kids now have consoles in their room playing fortnite and other online games.
@Bez87 I think there are plenty cases where it makes sense but for me, I seriously would've Day 1'd something like this a few years back.
I know a lot of people that carry their tablets around just to do remote play while hotspotting with their phones so this would be an instant buy for them. Also as mentioned, it's great if you have 1 TV and it's constantly in use or you're on holiday away from PS5 or whatever.
