Bloody hell, it feels like Elden Ring's the biggest thing in gaming since, well, we're not even sure what. The buzz that's surrounded this game's launch has been ridiculous. We always thought that it was going to be a hit, but we didn't think that it would be this popular. For what is still essentially a Souls-like title, it's managed to impact the mainstream consciousness to a shocking extent — as demonstrated by its monstrous sales numbers.
And on that note, don't forget to check out our truly gigantic Elden Ring guide if you need any help with the game.
Elden Ring also sits as one of the most highly rated games ever released. The action RPG has a 97 — ninety-seven! — on Metacritic, which is frankly absurd. But that's where this poll comes in. Is Elden Ring really a 10? What review score would you give it? Vote in our polls, and then commit to your stance in the comments section below.

Hidden path ahead.
I want From to try more new things, as they did with Sekiro. Elden Ring is amazing, but it's just open world Dark Souls.
Personally Bloodborne was their best. Elden Ring is more ambitious both mechanically and content-wise but I preferred the tighter Bloodborne experience. But I can see why others would rate it the publisher's best.
It's lived rent free in my head ever since I started it. I figured I would like it. I didn't think I would love it. Little did I know that I'd become obsessed with it. Everything on the gameplay front is excellent. The exploration is exciting at every turn. The level design has been top notch. The challenge level is just right as it is no cake walk, but it isn't overwhelmingly difficult either and immensely satisfying. The enemy variety is very diverse and when it's not like in some of the catacomb dungeons there's always some sort of twist to keep things interesting. Oh and the bosses have been really awesome as well.
The only real thing I'd say I like from a previous From game better is I think I still prefer the setting and lore from Bloodborne overall but there is no denying this game is really special. From should be very proud of their work here and it's easily the best game I've played on PS5 thus far. 10/10 for me and please...Praise the Elden Ring!
Still Bloodborne. Period.
10/10 for me and very likely my GOAT.
I'd give a 9.4 if I could. Bloodborne still remains my favourite FromSoft
It’s def the best FS game. I’m still getting annihilated every few minutes, so it’s the same as every FS game also!😂 Shocked it’s taken off as it has because of the difficulty. I expect to see a sharp decline soon.
I give it a 9, as it hasnt got into my blood, like bloodborne did...YET. And it is a 9 for the dissappointing graphics and performance, the art design is constantly a 10, I am in awe at the world...however I get pulled out of the immersion with weird screen artefacts when its foggy and framerate stutter when I'm just turning the camera whilst walking to take in the incredible view. All this being said I am a years long Fromsoft nut and I honestly hope they've changed open world game design principles for the rest of the industry, for the better, forever. The exploration is astounding. I will struggle to go back to more linear Fromsoft games, I'm looking at you Sekiro
Closest I've seen to a "perfect game". Landmark title for me. Still definitely not something for everyone. I don't like scores though, they're worthless.
I do want to play it but alot of games came out i wanted to play first. I bought it for my friends birthday and he has hardly been off it XD
10/10 easy and 2nd only to the first Dark Souls for me, its a fantastic game that perfects the formula and gives us one of the best most dense open worlds ever. Easily a contender for GOTY and i doubt it will be beaten for me this year.
(picture of spinal tap amplifier)
8/10. Great game, really like the design.
Lots of performance issues, lore and art aren't as interesting as Sekiro or Bloodborne.
8.5/10 so far. There's still very little in terms of a developed narrative here, it's lacking a level of technical polish to it, performance could be better, and not every region is as compelling as Limgrave was. There are also points where it can become a little unclear how it is you continue to progress the game's main story. But it's a really impressive extension of Soulsian game design to a vastly larger environment. The game features QoL improvements and a general lack of the sort of infuriatingly cryptic writing that plagued the Souls games, but without abandoning the crucial sense of mystery that From Software's games evoke. Bosses and enemy design in general are obviously extremely solid, and there's a ton of build varieties possible for your character.
Not a game I'm hopelessly in love with, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying myself quite a bit. And this is probably the first From Software game I can actually say that about.
It goes all the way upto 11 for me !
@Yinx try finger
Seriously though, amazing game. The open world exploration is done just right.
An easy 9/10. Only technical issues and slight lack of plot hold it back from being a 10. It’s that good.
It’s a possible GOAT for me, although I realize that is a subjective statement. It’s so much more than the sum of its parts, which is what some people seem determined to reduce it to.
I know my opinion alone doesn't matter, and I know you guys' feelings about the whole debate going on about Elden Ring and its scores. But nevertheless, I refuse to cast a vote and contribute in this.
Elden Ring (so far as I've played) is a solid game and definitely a masterpiece. I just wish we stopped scoring games.
It’s as much of a 10 as any game could be really!
It's definitely heading towards my Top 5 of all time. The fact that there are a few technical glitches (and the same ones that FromSoftware have been guilty of before) means that it's a very high 9 for me. It's a masterpiece.
Its 10 for me, without a doubt. I love the bosses, the world, the gameplay, everything really. But it’s partly a 10 because I’m actually making progress in a souls type game 🤣.
Its a 10 for me, even with the performance issues.
Best souls-like game? Absolutely. However Bloodborne still has the best WORLD setting imo.
Giving a 10 to this game is funny to me. Other games you see negatives like "poor performance" or something like that and it gets a point taken away. Now Elden Ring and From Soft can do whatever they want that they get a 10? Nah, for me it's a 9, I can't give a 10 (so far) if they have TERRIBLE framerate issues and huge pop-in issues too...with a game that looks not as good as people think it looks (the art direction holds the game up) these problems shouldn't exist!
The gameplay, art direction, music etc are all amazing, that's why I give it a 9.
@lolwhatno because a score by itself without explanation doesn't tell why a game is a 10. Games like Elden Ring are a 10 to some but to whom? It targets a very specific audience. If there's a proper explanation alongside the score, then yes, they can make sense imo.
Not gonna lie, for the longest time I thought this was an Elder Scrolls game. Not sure how much that's worth to this discussion but didn't know if I was the only one.
@kyleforrester87 Exactly! I don't know what more I could ask for...
I'm only 15 hrs in to what might be a 70-80 hr experience but as it stands, it's a 10. There are performance issues, I went through a foggy area last night and it wasn't fallout 4 far harbour bad, but it wasn't good. Dips as well as issues with frame pacing in a cross gen game on a ps5 ain't great. Nonetheless the sense of discovery combat system and enemy variety are staggering. I still can't figure out whether I prefer bloodborne or not though but it's one of the best open world games I've played and hopefully inspires others as they design game worlds in the future
It's an outstanding game that's a true gift in an industry that's fast losing its way. In truth, to me, this game is so good it's beyond scoring, like a priceless work of art. Giving it a 10 doesn't even do it justice.
@Yinx dog?
It's an 8 for me. I love it, I'm enjoying every minute, but there's a couple of minor issues that are stopping it being a 9 (I've never played a 10).
1. The lock on can be unreliable leading to cheap deaths.
2. Netcode isn't what it could be (though that may change as player numbers stabilize)
3. Frame rate may be an issue at times
4. Occasional inputs not registering. I'll hit attack with a full stamina gauge and nothing happens. It's not common but it's not great.
10. Though I'm hoping to find a weapon designed like the classic cleaver from Bloodborne, what an artistic weapon. After Papa Fell Omen smacked me with just a centimeter of his life left, I went back into the woods with all the rage, beat a boss and got a badass ashen warrior. Mr. Fell Omen was killed instantly on my return 😂. Lovely game, you just gotta grind I guess. I'd say the most annoying enemies so far are those cleaver wielding nags at Castle Morne.
I haven't played it myself but as a gamer for over 40 years plus I know my taste in games too there is no way on Earth this game is 10, no game is. I mean I've no doubt Elden Ring is a great game but 10? you're dreaming.
I would have given it a 10/10 so far from the 30 hours I've played. Mostly exploring Limgrave and the Castle. However, I feel like the game is missing a few quality of life items, one being a posture meter which I loved having in Sekiro. Being able to summon Ashes would be nice at all times as well lol
@RubyCarbuncle 10 = outstanding. A game can’t be outstanding?
@kyleforrester87 A 10 also implies perfect no game is perfect. That's what I'm saying.
Most people do not play this game.
@Ranger_River It’s the highest selling game outside of COD or FIFA in the UK since 2018. Plenty of people play this game.
@RubyCarbuncle of course nothing is perfect/flawless. The poll above declares a 10 as being outstanding though, so it’s not unreasonable to score it as such. Personally on that basis it is a 10 to me, but sure it has one or two problems.
I haven’t finished it yet but I don’t see myself giving this anything other than a 10 in my mind. It already sits as one of my favourite gaming experiences ever.
It's a 9 or a 10 (I'm still quite early, surprisingly). Technical issues are disappointing, but I agree with everyone else, the sense of adventure is unmatched.
Got a lot of love for DS3 (hell, even DS2) and I think Elden Ring does a good job of taking all the best bits and amalgamating them in a way that's more accessible. Can't say whether I think it's the best, but I'm sure having a whole lot of fun with it!
@get2sammyb see, reviews are easy
@kyleforrester87 I can read 🙃
Not finished yet, but after 30 hours I'm thinking 9.5. The technical hiccups just rob it from a 10 for me.
For reference I'd give HZ a 7.5... not that i'm trying to stir up trouble again
@RubyCarbuncle doesn't that make a '10' arbitrary, meaning the best games ever can only score a 9, at most? But by that logic, if all the best games can only ever be a 9, why not just make it 10, if we're all agreed that it technically means the same thing? I.e. arbitrary numerology doesn't mean 'perfect', it's just a top score...
Remind me to keep my bloody mouth shut next time 😡
@RubyCarbuncle You say that no game is a 10/10, and I understand what you mean. Keep in mind, however, that a "10" doesn't mean perfect. There are several factors that go into it. Although I don't like the scoring system, IGN rates their 10/10's as a "Masterpiece", and Eurogamer rates them as "Essential."
Lastly, you're being very condescending, telling people they are "dreaming" if they consider this game a "10/10" and that you've been playing games for 40 years so you know what a game should be scoring. Just because this game isn't your taste doesn't mean it shouldn't be receiving the praise that it is. Moreover, you even said you haven't played it, yet you're basically judging others who have and consider it amazing.
Food for thought.
@J2theEzzo pretty much, if a 10 needs to be perfect it not only needs to be perfect (which is basically impossible) in the moment but also remain perfect indefinitely as technology improves, which of course is impossible. So you either accept a 10 means something like “outstanding” or get rid of it all together. Which then makes 9 the new 10 😂
@RubyCarbuncle really no need to get annoyed buddy, you are entitled to your comment but you have to accept you might be challenged in a friendly way if you put something out there. There is nothing wrong with changing your mind too if you agree with what someone else is saying. Or not, it’s all good
@AFCC I think it goes to show that maybe sometimes we're too hard on technical issues (granted, the ones in ER can be fixed, but typical From are being elusive).
Like, I don't remember people being so harsh towards the performance of many PS1 games. For Elden Ring, it's clear that the core concept: the world, the design, the mechanics, the atmosphere, the ambition, the player agency and total control, overshadow its technical imperfections. Like I'm so immersed and satisfied with what I'm playing that I'm just not noticing these problems.
@kyleforrester87 Sorry man I'm just in a cranky mood today.
@lolwhatno my reasoning is that, scores are just numbers and you can't really evaluate a work of such length (video games in general -average playtime seems to be around 15-30 hours now) with scores.
And at the end of the day, it's all subjective. Who's to say my 10/10 isn't a 5/10 for someone else? (and it happens. There are games I'm absolutely crazy about that others abhor or are indifferent about)
Gaming being a serious thing for someone or not isn't really the case here. Even if you're just here to have fun, you wanna spend your money in the right way, and invest in an experience that's worth it. Reviews will give you tips and tidbits to think on, scores don't.
@RubyCarbuncle no worries at all
@TeapotBuddha yeah, for me it's a 10. As a product I would give it a 9 because it's poorly optimized. I really hope they fix that aspect. Also Bloodborne was my fav as well, can you imagine if they did a victorian lovecraftian open world??
No game has ever prompted the "Your TV will power off in 5 mins" message more times than this game. It takes 5 hours of no inputs to show it on my telly. Masterpiece.
I've only played 5 hours in total, already at level 27 but I still got my ass kicked when I fought Margit. This is easier than Sekiro tbh, especially with the co-op, spirit summon and the open-world.
8/10 for me. It’s not the best combat I’ve played but it’s close. It’s not the best story from the series either. But the openness of the world does it for me.
@Hoovesforhands lol that’s ESO for me. Auto shut offs galore.
Bloodborne still the best. Cant wait for the remaster and the Bloodborne II announcement from Blue Point hopefully this year!!! Horizon FW still GotY!!!
@BrainHacker I’m similar, although I’ve played a fair few more hours than you. I’m a relatively high level, got some good weapons, I feel I’ve got a good grasp of the combat mechanics and I’ve beaten most of the sub-bosses pretty easily. But I’ve hit a wall with Margit. I’ve given him 10 or so attempts and haven’t even got below half his health bar, even with summoning in a co-op player. But I’ll get there in the end.
It's a fantastic game. Easily a 9, probably a 10. But Bloodborne is still my favourite.
@mattb2020 Yeah, and that darn cliff. Margit's attack range is pretty wide plus the bridge, made it harder to avoid his offense. I fell from the bridge and he is still fighting my spirit jellyfish 😂. I'll probably find better equipment and level up some more before fighting that fugly b*stard again.
A 10 out of 10. Elden ring is one of the best games ever made.word up son
Haven’t dove in yet, waiting til spring break. It’ll be hard to best Bloodborne, I think, but I’m sure Elden Ring will be a big 10/10 for me once I do get started!
8.5/10
9/10 I'm saving my 10 for Bloodborne 2 as an elden ring style open world.
My Only complaint is that its graphics and animations on "nxt gen" are nowhere near the likes of demon's souls ps5 or horizon forbidden west.
Elden Ring is easily the best open world game I've played in a long time. It is something I was hoping Ghost of Tsushima would be. There's no quest markers, no question marks, no bunch of bandit camps to take out, and it lets you go wherever right at the very start. This game manages to make the experience of its open world fresh practically every single time and I haven't even beaten it yet. I just can't decide whether I'd choose Bloodborne or Elden Ring cause they are both some of the best games I've played.
8 for me. I’m disappointed in lack of next-gen features. Feels like I’m playing a PS4 game (although a very good one). Had a taste of what next-gen souls game could be with Demon’s Souls but that lacked some features as well. Might be why Elden Ring is cheaper than most PS5 games?
Also disappointed with repeat boss fights. Especially when just doing the side content. Must faced Ulcerated Tree Spirit in at least 6 locations now and it’s got graphic glitches each time and bugged out on me twice. Where the boss would just stop fighting. Most sides bosses are pretty boring and simple to beat to be honest and repeat across the map. The good side ones are the ones that trigger trophies or are part of quest lines.
Everything else love about game. Main bosses are great and good challenge. Plenty option on how tackle fight and much easier to change build. Despite open world still pretty easy to summon or join other players. Music always great and environments as well. Environment’s could been pushed more though
Ten out of ten. When everything is flowing and you're lost in exploring the world, it's the purest form of escapist gaming out there
@lolwhatno I can see the merit in scores under those circumstances. However, removal of scores would allow people to make wiser choices, because they have to read the reviews and also, it stops debates about scores and fandoms tearing each other apart to prove which game is better.
Of course, the world is not ideal. I just want everyone to enjoy games as I do. Might be selfish, idk.
9 because fall damage is inconsistent.
@Gremio108 I totally agree with you, pal. Since the game came out I’ve played it every day, and every day I’ve come away feeling satisfied and refreshed. It’s like they made the perfect game for me. I am so happy with it.
It's a solid 9 imo, Bloodborne remains the best for me.
Imagine if Elden Ring was graphic-wise and performance-wise as good as BluePoint's Demon's Souls, that would be a 10/10. Now it gets a 9 from me.
@lolwhatno Exactly! Pros and cons is a great way of quickly evaluating a game if you're not willing to read reviews. (and trust me, I don't read every review either and PushSquare definitely does it right)
11/10..because its 1 higher lol..but seriously its a rock solid 9 for me as there are a few very minor niggles and i mean very minor..its as close to perfect that a game has ever been for me personally..
I'd give it a nine. But is it better than Bloodborne? Not so sure.
Is Elden Ring a “better” game than Bloodborne? Yes, in every way I think it has improved the formula. But Bloodborne is still my favourite and potentially my GOAT. Elden Ring will come close, but I had never played anything like Bloodborne before. The cosmic horror style, the tone of the world, the storytelling, the combat and movement, the bosses, the difficulty. The darkness of it all. It was a landmark game for me at a time of my life when I really needed the escapism.
Where is the option I don’t give BS score?
On what method would I give a score? Yeah I didn’t think so.
So I didn’t vote the first part.
It’s the best FS no doubt 👍🏻
Elden Ring is a 7. It’s nothing special, basically Dark Souls 4. Graphics are okay, animations are dated, the Souls formula is dated.
The new God of War is easily the best Souls game.
Sekiro is easily the best FromSoft game followed by Bloodborne.
I want to say its a 10 as it's been extremely entertaining exploring most of limgrave and stormveil. But I got 3 more maps that opened up the main map and the game is massive. I don't know how I'll feel once I actually get to the farther ends of the maps to do the exact same thing I've already been doing for hours in the starting areas. I feel it'll get very repetitive by the end especially since most of what you get as a reward for exploring is stuff you will rarely use unless you like switching up fighting styles constantly
And I feel like the main dungeons are both a plus and a negative. Stormveil castle is massive and the parts done right are intricate. The verticality adds so much and it leaves you satisfied when you figure out how to get an item on a ledge or you find a hidden passage that leads to secret treasures usually just the items you likely never use like I said above. But other times, it's just a confusing mess with tons of similar paths. A bunch of narrow passages with horrible enemy placement to really let you know you it's a dark souls game
I'll have to see how it feels once I start reaching 100+ hours and endgame but so far I love it. I just want to keep playing it even with some of the issues I have with it. I hope it carries on like that for a long time
Not played it because I just find dark souls type games boring & frustrating I bought Bloodborne because of all the hype around it & just didn't get it at all
I’m genuinely surprised by how many people just don’t care that it doesn’t run well
This game is ticking all the boxes for me and has it hooks deep into me. Can see myself sinking close to 200 hours into this. Sure there are technical issues, although playing the native PS5 version I've not experienced the worst of them, they do not distract from just how good the game is to play.
@RubyCarbuncle There are a few games I'd give a 10 / 10 to :
Metroid Prime
Breath Of The Wild
Half Life 2
Mass Effect 2
Dead Space 2
and now, Elden Ring
But none of them are 'perfect' just outstanding in their field
@XOF you still have the issue of publishers doing shady stuff after the reviews are out though like with gt7 adding micro transactions after it had been reviewed
10/10. Game of the generation.
@jly1987 I'm not sure about PS4/PS5 but it runs well on my PC. There are times when the fps stutters or dips, but it doesn't affect my gameplay at all.
Anyone who said lower than a 7 is lying to themselves. I understand gaming is subjective but but that subjective.
@BrainHacker yeah, that’s not what pretty much any person I know or have watched play on PC says, and from has a horrible history of PC ports
I say 8. It's fun and good looking but it's not for everyone with the difficulty and the pop in for the grass on PS5 is horrible. Having fun even though you can still get one shotted at level 109.
@Ranger_River there's a couple of million people who would likely say otherwise on that front, choom.
@Would_you_kindly fromsoft wouldn't do that though. Any kind of mtx and lootboxes would completely break the game and render the core experience absolutely pointless, that's before you get to the multiplayer aspect. One of the many reasons (and good god there are SO many) I love the soulsborne games is that they seem to be above that kind of monetisation.
I booted up Bloodbourne on my old PS4 days before Elden ring released. It has been top of my games list since it released but it was hard going back to it. Its a lot harder to live with the 20fps and low res image than it use to be. If I was only wearing my rose glasses I would of held out for Bloodbourne but after looking at it again Elden Ring has it hands down for me. Will always love Bloodbourne though. Sony should pay for a PS5 4K 60fps Patch. Problem is just how low res are the assets. Regardless of Bloodbourne, Elden Ring is superb.
I think Elden Ring encompasses everything. If you're looking for Bloodborne vibes, you can find that at interiors like Stormveil Castle, or the dungeons.
@jly1987 Well, I'm basing it on my experience with the game. The fps stuttering (merely seconds) are only minor inconveniences and doesn't ruin the game. I've experience the same thing with Days Gone when I was playing it on my PS4 Pro, but it didn't really bothered me at all.
@TheArt I'm still hoping they bring in the trick weapons from BB for their next title but maybe they can't cause of it probably being owned by Sony
Having beaten the game yesterday (I did most major things except beat Malenia), I gave the game a 9.
It's very good. It's nowhere near as good as Breath of the Wild in terms of open world design. I didn't like it nearly as much as Bloodborne. But it is still very good and probably my second favorite FromSoftware game after Bloodborne.
It took me 67 hours to beat the game. The game is amazing from hour 10 to hour 40. Past that point, the seams of the game really, really start to show and I started to get tired with how repetitive it is.
I have a lot of complaints with the game, but I think my biggest complaint could be described as "That secret/boss was the coolest secret/boss I've ever encountered and I really wish the game didn't repeat it two more times."
@KingPev Half-Life 2, BOTW and Dead Space 2, a few 10’s in my book, too.
My first FromSoftware Souls type of game and I'm really enjoying it. I gave it a 9/10 since personally, it has several things that I wished was there/fixed e.g. no option to display/hide helmet, can't compare equipment in stores, no option to customize/alter an equipment's appearance with another's without changing the status, and the graphic/framerate is not as superb as I expected.
9. The bosses are too hard for confort. But I knew what I was signing up for. So, one more attempt. I think I prefer Star Wars Fallen Order, it is a more pleasant experience, and Cal Kestis is definitely more powerful then my char at Elden Ring. It is clear that the only weapon you have in the game is your mind.
The exploration part of the game is quite interesting but I feel like 90% of my time in Elden Ring so far is battling against bosses. I also miss populated cities like we see in open world games like Skyrim and The Witcher 3.
Definitely Elden Ring is now a landmark in the open world game concept with new ideas that raises the bar for other developers.
Oh definitely a 10/10 for me. Playing on PS5 no major bugs as yet in my 37 hours only had it crash to menu once. I have slowed the camera speed down and that seems to help with frame drops during running around.
The “technical issues” that non-souls fans seem to keep going on and on about are really not that bad especially when compared to other games which are released in near broken states.
This game is technically impressive and just roots itself into one’s brain much like Bloodborne did and I sit most of the day waiting till I can get home and boot it up again!
@Filth_Element Yeah the "technical issues" on console at least are about on par with past games, end of the day the reason Souls fans aren't bothered is because its never really an issue outside of 9ne or two areas and is easy to overlook. That said i'm talking purely console versions as the PC version is really rough.
@WallyWest yeah I know it’s meant to worse on PC but that was expected really wasn’t it? This happens with all FromSoft games on PC have to wait until it’s patched. I feel like that with most games on console too I wait until they have patched it a couple of times. Not ideal I know but that’s the reality of gaming these days. I actually thought there would be issues buying Elden Ring day one but have been pleasantly surprised.
8/10.
Fun but missing some QoL things that would make it better.
I would like to pause and a minimap wouldn't be too bad.
10/10 , to say that I love it is an understatement. Ever since I played Bloodborne, I always chase that feeling of overcoming diffcult bosses and areas, and of course Elden Ring delivers + the sense of exploration and adventure.
20 hours in and I can truly say that I simply do not like Elden Ring. I can’t get into the story, the systems, the mechanics/controls, etc. character movement is odd, and it’s not as visually impressive as I had expected. I get a similar vibe from GTA games.
This game made me love games again. I can go 4-5 hrs straight doing co op against bosses and it reminds me so much of bloodborne in that way. Just endless fun. 10/10 for me.
So far after 20 hours having beat Rennala, the game is a 7 for me.
Negatives:
-The open world is pretty barren and leveling is too slow as side bosses often give so little runes that you don't even get a level. Normal enemies also have too low rune drops with most hovering around 100 so far.
-Enemies can hit you through walls just like a From games. It is a flaw that really needs addressed as in this type of game it is an issue.
-Often the mobs have too many enemies making fighting them a chore at least for me.
-The side bosses are way too easy and don't prepare you at all for main bosses. Those bosses are also pretty easy at least so far.
-Magic seems overpowered.
-The map is kinda bad. The markers are not helpful. It should have let you mark places and leave notes on your map which would have helped immensely in immersing the player.
-Exploring can end up being a chore and often isn't rewarding.
-Boss fights are simply not rewarding to me (Personal grip)
Positives:
-The visuals are great and the music in boss fights is great.
-The main bosses are pretty good so far and make it accessible even for non souls players (At least from my experience. Only finished Bloodborne prior)
-Main dungeons are great to explore but are too vertical at times.
-Easy side dungeons can make for a great palate swap from difficult encounters similar to Dark Souls II.
-Summons are really great. Demihuman gang for life.
-Main bosses are visually impressive.
-Story is much more engaging than past From games.
Overall, I do like the game but I feel that the game has been overhyped and overrated to a degree. I feel this will lead to many picking it up and being very disappointed in it. I'm hopeful that later parts will change my mind but based on what I've encountered I don't it will get higher than a 8 for me.
Bloodborne is still top for me. I'm loving Elden ring but it's quite a step from "perfection" example is nobody going yo mention that the side dungeons/catacombs are like identical? Pretty lazy design, some bosses are a real pain for very underwhelming results and rewards, like no cd's on their abilities or stamina, its infuriating sometimes for no real point other than to smash you into the ground.
The magic in this game needs a serious nerf bat, rotting breath......
And then of course the highly noted performance issues and it could definitely look better, going from horizon to elden ring, it looks grubby and old/ janky.
That said I'm loving it anyway
@Nepp67 i thought from software own bloodborne and sony just published it..i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure blood borne is owned by fs..
@Uromastryx as in nobody mentions the chalice dungeons all looked the same and had bugger all loot in them too 🤔
@Northern_munkey
This is true 100% but they added some difficulty like fighting bosses at minus 75% max hp etc. And chalice dungeons led to something at the end or? I can't remember been so long
The only thing that changes in elden ring is they hit harder everytime I've been to at least 4 different ones now all had the same final boss stupid watchdog thing or a black assassin
Again it's minor issue I still really enjoy the game
40hrs in and only at the lakes.
@XOF
Ikr
How could they ask people to score a game they are far from completing. Proof that it’s complete BS.
Even when we done with the game there’s probably a lot we missed and unable to fully appreciate anyway.
If at least there s a method like pts for graphics Art, sound effect, performance, setting, main story plot, side quests, combat, general gameplay etc etc then do average at least Id respect that. Would still be BS but at least I’d respect the attempt
I love the game really.
@lolwhatno
Scores aren’t helping anyone even those who can’t read the review. At best it’s misleading. Scores don’t tell anything other than the reviewer s feeling and obligation to choose between a range of number saying how good or how ok or how bad they feel because unknown reason. And even that.
In all honesty the best help gamers would get is a short, very short sentence. Not a formula to choose from but a real expression dedicated to one game. Is it more difficult to read a sentence rather than a number?
No it’s not hard. Proof that numbers are only there because of a system in the gaming industry and not to help gamers.
Btw When Push is asked about metacritic they always reply they don’t score for metacritics and not interested in that. So considering the score to contribute to metacritics as a useful metric is false and not the intent.
Edit
Also a game is often evolving.
Imaging the review on pc for instance. ‘Exceptional game but poor performance at launch on PC’. I’m just giving an example. That sentence is more helpful than any score.
@lolwhatno
Oh thanks for reply.
Hope your enjoying the game as much as I do. 😀
Have a lovely day
@kyleforrester87 I actually played ER for 24 hours straight a couple days ago. I haven't done that since I quit playing mmorpg's. My only complaint is did they really have to bring the little grimlin enemies back. After dark souls 3 I thought I would never have to deal with them again...man I hate those things.
@TooBarFoo
I agree BB performance was so bad. And it was very highly regarded by critics.
Just to say I don’t get the fuss about PlayStation ER performance which is fine to me even in last gen from what I saw. A few issues but reasonable and not like the mess on PC.
I’m playing in quality mode haha
Maybe I’m old and used to ok performance but BB was definitely way way worse on PlayStation and still a classic masterpiece.
Over thirty years I've played a lot of games. A lot a lot. Mountains of them. And over the last five or six years I've reviewed dozens of them, too. Reviewing a game is easy because you just play a game and write what you think about it and so as far as gamey writing jobs go it's about as easy as it gets.
The only tricky-ish bit for me is assigning a score to it, because you're adding a scientific value to a subjective opinion and on any level it doesn't really make sense but here we are.
Anyway, there are games where you toss and turn between a 9 and a 10. Games that are good, like really good, but you're just not sure if they cut it. Close but no cigar. And there are games where you play them and like five hours in you know that unless the game goes off the rails it's a 10 all day.
Like Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario Galaxy, 2018s God of War, and a handful more... Elden Ring is the second kind. It's one of the easiest 10s I've ever seen. I say this based on the thirty hours I've played and reserve the right to change my opinion if it turns into a trainwreck later in the game.
But yes, a 10. Such an easy 10. No tossing and turning, no rummaging through notes trying to decide. A super easy 10.
@JJ2 I'm playing ER on PC and while it had stutters in the beginning it's not a big deal now. I understand it was due to shader compilation first time assets loaded, so mostly in the opening minutes of the game. The standard for PC gaming is so much higher than for console, the fact it's capped at 60fps being the end of times for many PC gamers where we see 60fps as the performance option on console really highlights this. So it's far from perfect on PC but still better image quality than console and as almost every PC monitor has supported freesync for the last 5 years it' plays great.
@TooBarFoo
Ha ok. I saw a few pc gamers reviewers or streamers complain about really annoying issues worse than on consoles. I guess everyone may have a different experience also considering the hardware they have.
That’s the thing though. Consoles have similar hardware so it makes it easier to see how well it runs
@ellsworth004 wow that’s a hell of a session 😂 didn’t you go a little bit crazy?
@lolwhatno nothing wrong with the occasional monster gaming session. Kinda jealous tbh.
@Ranger_River
If no one is playing it how's it selling so well, did people just buy it and never played it? Please tell us how!
@lolwhatno Sure it’s not healthy to do regularly but nothing wrong with an occasional gaming marathon, or any other excess that you enjoy. Would you say the same about laying in bed making love? 😂 And why stop at 24 hours? Probably coz you need to sleep!
I really dont get people that say that ER doesnt deserve a 10 because of its thecnical issues but also give Bloodborne a 10.
BB runs like garbage till this day lol, I give it a 10 regardless, but elden ring man, this game is on another level
For me I would say 8/8.5.
Lack of a proper native is a negative as is unclear progression at times, the inconsistent falling damage , died a few times from falls that are a lot less than ones I've not taking damage! Some technical issues as well.
If they fixed some of these and it looked as good as the demon souls remake it would be a easy 10.
Mind after 20ish hours I still suck haven't yet managed to kill first boss yet and leg it when see something with a huge hit bar. But loving he exploring and the sense of accomplishment when beating something had trouble with and finding new dungeons and equipment.
I’ve only set out on the directed route having ventured southeast to do some grinding. Like some dodgy tourist got sprung handling a chest and teleported to hell north east from there; back on the right path again thank god and stronger for it. 3 bosses beat; on the roof of the castle atm this thing is an eine for me thus far. And only set to increase
@TeapotBuddha it does always make sense to check a sites scoring policy, as what you think a 10 means might not be what the reviewer/site considers a 10 to be.
@kyleforrester87 ...you have great taste ! 😉
It hasn't quite reached the 10/10 level of Bloodborne or Witcher 3 for me yet but I also have a ton left to do so we'll see by the time I finish it. 9/10 for now though and I love it
@Hibari89 Now is the perfect time for them to revisit Armored Core if you ask me.
Or Cookie & Cream.
@JJ2 totally understandable. Getting the average from those parameters, as you sais, is still not good enough but I sure as hell ain't gonna take a reviewer's word for it that Elden Ring (or any other games) is [Insert score] out of 10.
@Hibari89 And I'd argue that's what's so great about it!
Eldenring the game is very good but the fps is all over the place it is very choppy ecspecially coming straight from horizon forbidden west which had a splid 60fps exsperience 99 percent of the time. Because of that its hard to rate elden ring any higher then a 6or7 at best. I hope they fox it asap its hoestly hard for me to play in its current state. But the story is very good and the gameplay minus the fps issue is very good. I personally would take horizon forbidden west over eldenring everyday of the week and twice on sunday but with that said its very close but ot definetly needs some patch work.
I wouldn't know since I haven't played the game yet!
Still waiting until Black Friday/Christmas sales.
It's a huge game with so much to see and do, I'm glad people are loving it.
So many games now are broken & unfinished, nice to see it done right for once.
@Hibari89 just? 🤗
@JB_Whiting it's not like I'm not liking the game, but I can't give it a perfect score unless it's really close to perfection (in their genre) and like I say, with graphics that don't push the machine at all, the fps should be stable 60.
