While I want it to be Tears of the Kingdom, I think it will be Baldur's Gate 3
Given how during the entirety of the Game Awards there has only been 1 GotY winner that released in the 2nd half of the year (Dragon Age Inquisition in 2014, the first event), I think TotK will win as the only 1st half of the year releases nominated this time are TotK and RE4.
It's going to be Baldur's Gate 3. Everyone is hailing the game as being totally revolutionary. I haven't played BG3 or AW2 so I can't toss my opinion in on them.
For me? It would have to be RE4. I really liked Mario Wonder, Tears and Spidey 2, but RE4 Remake was so, so good.
Metroid Prime remastered
Its between Baldur's Gate 3 and Zelda TotK and nothing else, anyone who expects otherwise are fooling themselves.
I’m hoping TOTK.
@DennisReynolds Nah, Alan Wake 2 has just as good a chance. It seems to have landed with every single critic that played it.
It will be, and frankly deserves to be, Baldur’s Gate 3.
My personal GOTY is FFXVI and I was surprised it wasn't on the list. Alan Wake 2 is probably going to be a close second for me but I think the way BG3 made an impact at launch feels like an easy win for them. I think it'll be well deserved but man it's been a mega year for games!
My heart would like to see it go to RE4R or Mario Wonder but my brain knows it'll either be TOTK or Baldur's Gate 3 (leaning more towards BG3 in that regard).
Imo it should be Alan Wake 2
My game of the year is, without a doubt, Final Fantasy XVI, but what game do I think will win? It’s gonna be BG3, isn’t it. Not played it myself, but I will at some point, that’s for sure.
Tears of the Kingdom. It was just too dang good. That's a top 10 all time game for me.
Baldur's gate 3 is too popular and successful and the winner. Its a instant classic.word up son
The achievements of Baldur's Gate 3, both in itself and for gaming in general are too huge to ignore.
This is the first year Sony isn't hugely represented which feels so weird. But as good as Spidey is, AW2 and BG3 deserve to sweep the awards!
It's an amazing time for gaming when two amazing single player, non mainstream genres are the best games of the year!
I'd really like to see Alan wake 2 win,but its gonna be bg3 without a doubt
I think it will be Baldur's Gate 3, myself, @nessisonett. I'm currently playing though Alan Wake 2, and although I think it is exceptionally good, and would be a worthy winner any other year, damn there are some really problematic bugs in the game. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to restart the game because my character just will not move from the spot. It literally gets locked in position. I also had to put the game down for a game because I encountered a game-breaking bug that completely blocked progression. Thankfully it got patched the following day.
Baldur's Gate 3 though is a step above AW2 in every department except rock songs! 😂
I think Baldur’s Gate will win, but I am 100% rooting for Alan Wake 2. Alan Wake 2 has become one of my favorite games of all time and it landed in a big way with critics.
Spider-Man and RE4 have no chance. I’d like to say Mario Wonder has a chance, but, even if it’s my second favorite of the bunch, I’m aware it’s the Vegeta to TotK’s Goku. TotK does have a chance, I’d say. TotK, BG3, and Alan Wake 2 all were games that tried to make a big impact on what games could do.
Hogwarts Legacy will be my goty followed up by Spider-Man
It's down to two games, the rest are there just to fill the spots, Baldurs Gate 3 or Zelda TOTK. I haven't played Baldurs Gate 3 so I can't say if it deserves it or not but Zelda was an amazing game so I'm hoping that wins.
@nessisonett Alan Wake 2 doesn't have the mountain of endless 10's that BG3 and Zelda have nor the impact BG3 has had. Don't get me wrong AW2 is fantastic and in my top 3 this year but the difference between it and the other 2 especially BG3 is massive. Its like last year with Elden Ring and GoW Ragnerok both great games but ER was always the clear winner.
I picked Alan wake 2 but I know it’s not gonna win
BG3 by far has the best odds. Would say AW2 could be wild card as 2nd best chance. If it's TOTK it would be ridiculous. The other 3 games don't have a chance.
@Fiendish-Beaver Ironically enough, I ran into bugs at every turn when Baldur’s Gate 3 came out on PS5 in my co-op game for the first week or so that it was out, which made me drop the title til the release schedule thinned out. I’m probably going to try again in December with it, hoping that everything got patched out. After all the high praise I had seen for the title, my first couple hours had me scratching my head. Sure, there were things to praise, but I felt truly overwhelmed that I couldn’t go 20 minutes without a crash, freeze, or other issue. I thought I was going crazy til I found a forum on Reddit where other people experienced the same thing.
Kinda funny the 2 games most people think are likely to win (BG3 and TotK) are also likely the 2 games most people haven't actually finished
@DennisReynolds Baldur’s Gate 3 will win but I do think Alan Wake has a higher chance than Zelda.
That sucks, @somnambulance. I have only played BG3 on the PC, so cannot really speak to the state of the game on console. What I will say is Larian are one of the best developers out there, and they will fix most problems pretty damn quickly. Hopefully you are able to return to the game and get the same level of enjoyment that I did with the game...
It’s going to be between BG3 and ToTK. I just can’t see anything else beating them.
They will try to go edgy-cool and choose Alan Wake.
Has a turnbased game ever won a goty before, if not there's a first time for everything and would be nice to see even if it's not my cup of tea. Unsurprisingly BG3 is easily winning the votes here and will be the same in many other similar articles like this one from others. Keep in mind not every gamer in the world is here and never go to comment sections and there's so many other gamers around the world that have zero interest in BG3. Much prefer South Park turnbased and the latest mainline Yakuza turnbased😆, don't hate on me ha
Having said all that, I think BG3 has the best chance to take it overall but only just. Goty winner BG3, 2nd Totk, 3rd Spidey2 or AW2
Likely Baldur’s Gate 3. Haven’t played it yet but I’d be more than happy to see a true RPG take the cake.
What a year for games, I think BG3 will win, haven't played it myself but I will when the physical version comes out it is just that I am pretty sure I haven't heard a bad word about it.
10% for public voters and 90% with what they call the the voting jury. Still BG3 will win it
@nessisonett Going by the reviews, the general bias or love for Nintendo/Zelda and the fact TotK is straight up one of the best open world games ever i disagree. Critics loved AW2 but they didn't rate it anywhere near as high as TotK, in fact out of the games nominated for GOTY AW2 is actually one of the "lowest" rated games on there with critics.
@Beerheadgamer82 Joystick awards are player voted and BG3 took nearly everything.
Wow, I was expecting Spider-Man 2 to top the vote. BG3 is my game of the year. Worthy of the original (just rolled credits). TotK just didn’t do anything new for me. RE4 was fantastic, and I hear good things about AW2. What a year!
I realy love Spider-man 2 but I know it's gona be BDG3 and I happy with it because it was a good game and with a small studio they do à Fantastic game
I said something similar the other day, @Jammsbro. The only reason why anyone will award the GotY Award to anything other than BG3, is so that they can stand out from the crowd.
As much as I am enjoying AW2, I just think that BG3 pushes the boundaries so much further. AW2 is a game that can be completed in 40 hours, or thereabouts, and that's you done and dusted with the game. Whereas I have completed a single run of BG3 that took my in excess of 300 hours, and yet I can still replay the game in several different ways, and potentially still not have seen everything that the game has to offer. To be clear, I'm not saying that the length of the game is the determining matter, I am suggesting that the sheer scope of BG3 is on an entirely different level...
Will win: BG3
Should win: Final Fantasy XVI
My vote: Spiderman 2
zelda unfortunately , or freaking mario
I would say in every conceivable way it should be AW2 but BG just hit so hard with even fairly casual gamers that it’s a lock. I finished about half and the combat put me to sleep but the story and VO were fantastic as well as the choice based mechanics.
Side note: I agree with some of the users above, AW2 is very buggy as well and that could really hold it back from all the award shows coming up.
@DrVenture69 spider-man 2 has too much downtime & the painfully annoying MJ stealth garbage is still in the game, couple this with it’s short story since both of those eat into its overall length, then i could see why the game wouldn’t be.
still the best spider-man game ever made, but they really went out of their way to bring it down a lot.
If you go by Metacritic, @nessisonett and @DennisReynolds, the scores are:
TotK 96
BG3 96
AW2 94
RE4 93
Super Mario 92
Spiderman 2 90
Opencritic have the review scores as:
TotK 96
BG3 96
AW2 94
Super Mario 91
Spiderman 2 91
RE4 89
So if we go by 'professional' journalist reviews alone, then the race really is between either BG3 or TotK...
BG3 nothing stands a chance except maybe zelda. Def not spiderman 2 that game is hit or miss. My personal goty however is re4.
If it’s voted for by people within the industry it will be BG3. If the public vote then you know the cult will have TOTK over the finish line in record time.
Either Zelda or BG3 will win it. Personally I'd go with Spiderman 2 and even Wonder over those but I think one of those will get it.
Baulders door 100%
I think you could be right, @BusyOlf, particularly because most of the games are not available on the Nintendo, meaning that the Switch only players will likely get behind either TotK or Super Mario. That might be enough to propel TotK to win in many of the public votes...
@DennisReynolds BG3 winning goty awards isn't set in stone, yes it feels more likely than
the others but you can't underestimate the other games. An example of this would be so many comments sections up and down the entire Internet a few years ago were saying there's no way The Last of Us part 2 will win goty and then it actually did. BG3 feels like it'll win and feels more likely than the others given all the comments up and down comment sections, but don't be surprised if it doesn't is all I'm saying, those other games are equally as deserving
I would be shocked to see Zelda not take it. I still think BG3 has a difficult hill to climb just because of how niche it is compared to how much mass appeal Zelda is. I'm willing to bet most journalists didn't get around to BG3 and so will just default to Zelda.
Street Fighter 6 is my goty though.
My current GOTY Wild Hearts isn't in the running or nominated for anything whatsoever so I officially have no horse in this race. That being said though this year is just like last year. In that it's a two-way race but this time its between Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur's Gate 3. But if I had to bet on just one I'd have to say BG3 is probably gonna take it
Should be TotK as that game completely sucked me in, in a way that BotW failed to.
I mostly hope it's NOT Baldur's Gate 3, but it probably will because graphics.
It's gonna be BG3, no doubt. It's made minor celebrities of the actors, like 97% on Metacritic, it even made it into South Park. BG3 is too big to not be game of the year.
@Nomither6, yikes, I heard it was short, but that doesn’t sound great. I guess it depends what you’re into. I liked the first one, but wasn’t that bothered.
Not FF16. C'mon that Titan battle man! And all the other Eikon battles really, plus a great story and fantastic gameplay. Did any of these people who nominate these games play it?
Really, really want Alan Wake 2 to win because it’s just phenomenal. But as many others have said, BG3 will likely win.
Not Starfield
Baldurs gate 3 without a doubt. By all accounts its a superb game and deserves all the praise its getting.
Kinda' missing the "subject" in the article's title there?
Anyway, this year i don't have a favorite game among the chosen nominees...
I like RE4, played and finished it, it's a good game, but it's not gonna win.
The battle will be between Nintendo and Nintendo this year, methinks.
However, money's on Zelda TotK taking the cake over Mario.
I only see three viable candidates, with Zelda and BG being the favorites and AW2 being the underdog.
Sorry Spidey, RE4 and specially Mario Wonder, they don't have a real chance although being great games
Probably Baldurs Gate, but for me it’s Tears. To take nothing away from TOTK, it’s probably too similar to BOTW to win the top award and I can kinda appreciate that.
Honestly Hifi-Rush should win it, the only original game this year, afaik. A lot of great games this year but not much on the originality department.
BG3, nothing else comes close.
And Larian deserves that W for sure
Pretty much like choosing who has the best pizza in NYC or Rome. Comes down to personal preference, followed by needing to narrow down to only one at random.
I'm sulking because Wo Long isn't on there, so I've spoiled my vote.
@kyleforrester87 Good to see the hat out
@sketchturner If you think BG3 would win because of "graphics" just shows that you haven't tried or seen any videos of the game.
@nessisonett Isn't Alan Wake 2 the only sub-90 metacritic game on the list?
It has no chance whatsoever. TotK would have been pretty much guaranteed the win if BG3 hadn't landed like it did.
Baldurs Gate 3 is my prediction to win even though I haven't played it, I think it would be really cool to see a genre that is usually ignored win it, Original Sin 2 didn't even get nominated despite all that game apparently accomplished.
Zelda is obviously the other big Contendor, it's definitely down to those two.
I've played TOTK (admittedly at a snails pace, yet to see the credits) but I think it's a game worthy of goty. Love the three layer set up to it's open World (the Sky, Land and underground)
@Gremio108 Big Boss says holidays are coming
@Athrum I've watched a lot of footage of BG3. If you're saying it's not an especially great looking game, I agree. But compared to TotK or Mario Wonder, it looks more "impressive." Spiderman 2 and Resident Evil 4 remake are certainly better looking but they are both too derivative to win GotY.
Seems like the winner has to do something fresh and be graphically impressive, so BG3 seems like the obvious choice based on how these things usually go.
I was all Baldur's Gate 3 and I think it will still win but for me Alan Wake 2. I'll be replaying both for a long time.
For me personally it’s FFXVI. But out of that list it’s got to be Baldurs Gate 3
No way they'd give it to Zelda 2 times especially when BotW and TotK are similar. And after snubbing and nobody caring about Divinity OS2 in the 2017 Game Awards, they'll make it up to them with BG3.
Baldurs Gate 3 is so far above the other games in terms of quality and passion that it's really no question. It will win and it deserves to win.
Winner: BG3
Should win: RE4
My vote AW3
Zelda and Mario can keep walking
@Fiendish-Beaver Alan Wake 2 is only 94 on Xbox at 14 reviews while the PS5 version that has the most reviews is sitting at 87%.
@Beerheadgamer82 Yeah that's why i said TotK as well, its either BG3 or TotK winning this no other.
@Uromastryx Why should a remake win over the others? Its a great remake but its hardly a groundbreaking one.
95% chance it's Baldur's Gate 3.
5% chance it's TotK.
0% chance for everything else.
BG3 came out after ToTK so it has the advantage. I need to finish ToTK and play BG3. What a fantastic year for gaming!
I've played and enjoyed Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. All of these are great games and deserve to win. That said, Baldur's Gate and RE4 Remake seem like great games too.
While playing ToTK I was certain it was Game of the Year. After finishing it I went on to BG3 and that immediately clicked with me in a very unique way. The narrative, the combat, the world, the lore, the endless choice. It is a masterpiece and totally deserving of the crown.
Obviously baldur's gate 3 but mime personally is ff16 😉
I want AW2. just incredible, I know people go on about reviews and how TOTK should win it, but it's not always about Score. Sometimes inventive goes along way.
Ahh, fair enough, @DennisReynolds. I just looked at the overall scores...
Definitely gonna be LOTR: Gollum.
Baldur's Gate 3 and it isn't even a competition lol
bg3 is overhyped for nothing. boring battle system destroys it.
It's 100% going to be Baldur's Gate 3. Tears of the Kingdom is going to suffer the GOW Ragnarok treatment where because the prior game won GOTY this one won't due to there being another hugely acclaimed game released the same year.
Zelda for me. But haven't played BG3 yet. Now I've got my Portal I might actually have the free time to dedicate to it
@Fiendish-Beaver imo I am not sure what boundaries BG3 pushed. It's an excellent game and after playing DOS2 I did enjoy this but until the 3rd act the world still felt incredibly empty for the "scale". I also thought the story was pretty standard yes the replayability is through the roof but that can only be factored in minorly, besides act 2 will always be act 2 no matter the decisions before and act 3 the same. Plus don't even get me started the on the most underwhelming ending to a game I've played for a long time. Alan wake 2 used their in house developed engine and made steps in realising new graphical potential. Nothing BG3 did felt new to me just took stuff previous games did and made them bigger. Also if your gonna mention bugs did you forget the bugs that stopped players from playing act 3 for like a week. For me I enjoyed both games so if either wins I'm happy as Larian made and exceptional game especially considering the recent drivel released by some AAA companies recently but I don't think it's as much as a foregone conclusion. Still two AA developers showing how it's done.
I vote for Marvel's Spider-Man 2
But I'm kinda disappointing that there's no Final Fantasy XVI, Atomic Heart and Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy didn't even get a mention because the fruitcake fruitloops would lose their minds and cry. So now we're omitting games because of mentally unstable people.
I root for BG3. I played Zelda but i didn't like it. BG3 on the other hand is great
Pointless award
It's between Zelda and Baldurs Gate.
Both are amazing titles so either would be well deserved, I think Zelda will get more fan votes so how a big a sway they have will decide this.
