Just in case you missed it, the next major PS5 firmware update will let you disable the console's infamous 'beep' — the surprisingly loud chirp that occurs whenever you switch your system on. In truth, we've come to embrace the beep, but this news has revealed that some PS5 players aren't too keen on it.
Whether you're just not a fan of the noise, or whether the beep attracts unwanted attention from family members when you're doing some late-night gaming, we can certainly imagine some very select scenarios where the beep isn't ideal. But if we were putting money on it, we'd bet that most people simply don't care about their console's chirping.
Needless to say, it's time for a poll. The firmware is currently in beta — congratulations if you were invited to test it out — and is expected to fully release in the relatively near future. But when it does drop, will you be muting your PS5's beep? Have your say in our poll, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.
Will you be muting your PS5's beep? (3,940 votes)
- Yes, I'm muting it immediately
- Maybe, I might try muting it
- Nah, I don't mind the beep
- No, the beep is an integral part of the PS5 experience

Il be keeping the beep on, the amount of times Ive accidentally turned my PS5 on by knocking the controller on the desk is crazy, and the only reason I know is because of the beep.
Also if you ain't hearing that beep then you know somethings up.
I've never given the beep a second thought until people started talking about it over the last few days.
I put it on medium volume and that's fine with me.
Won't be muting it. My dog enjoys the beep both when turning on and turning off. I'll miss the little head tilt he does far too much if I muted it.
It’s just a beep… but I love how much this divides the community.
#teamnobeep
Nah, it’s the tiniest of noises then it’s over. Better that than I accidentally turn on the PS5 and don’t realise.
No need for me to mute my PS5 since it won't be bothering anyone at home. Also, that beep is just iconic for me
I wish there was a 50% volume option.
I might try muting, but I'm so used to it by now that I probably think something is wrong with my console when not hearing a beep.
I'm keeping the beep. I understand others might have valid reasons to mute it though.
I actually took my PS5 apart and disabled the piezo speaker that made the beep a while back. Worst "feature" of the PS5.
Well, it's a beep and just happens one time if you use the console properly, if you annoyed, then do not whine about the PS5 acting up... really, there are more annoying sounds... like you screaming while playing GTA, Fornite or COD, haha
‘Surprisingly loud beep’
Mine must be faulty because it’s really not that loud at all.
It’s there and over in a second so no reason to turn it off
Nope I have kept the beep.
to keep confusion to a minimum we should divide into two teams:
#teamnobeep
and
#teamonbeep
i am definitivelly #teamonbeep
Make it louder!!
Nope, I’d make it even louder if I could BEEP!!
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Mine was very loud.
It could be heard from anywhere in my house when I turned on the PS5, which is why physically took it out. Good to see they finally added the option though for those who dont want to take apart the console to remove it. Ha.
I want the PS1 startup again still makes me happy when I hear it.
I want an option for extra beeps please. Thanks for asking.
Yes, I already have. I did the same thing with my Xbox. Nice for a late night or early morning session lol.
No since it doesn't bother me
I wish i could turn off the orange flashing light when the PS5 is in sleep mode though
F the beep. I'm muting that sucker the moment the update is complete.
100% I can’t stand it. Sounds so 1990s 😂. BTW I’m still waiting for a substantial update to the whole trophy thing on PlayStation Sony!
Sadly, yes. I used to be beep neutral, but after helping to make some tiny humans, I oppose all unnecessary noises.
No because where my PS5 is positioned, I cannot see it, so for me, the sound advises me when the console is switched on. Plus, I've have a PlayStation since the day the PS1 came out, and for me, it's all part of owning the platform...
It’s a nice signal that pressing the ps key worked 😅
#teamonbeep
No! I love the beep! 😂
I don’t have a PS5, but I’ve been wanting this feature since the first time I turned on my PS4. I guess I need to upgrade to PS5 if I want this next-gen technology.
Who asked for this ,Sony actually decided to make this a feature, id prefer themes and proper folders to be honest
This is not like the PS1 boot sound, which is still the best.
Muting this cheap beep immediately.
I know that it’s turned on and off, and that my controller is working fine. Nothing wrong with it
Interesting. The results appear evenly divided.
Nope word up son
I don't mind the beep so won't be altering it. Plus sometimes I turn the PS5 on and get a drink or a snack while it's booting. Hearing the beep lets me know that it is on and working; if I didn't hear anything I'd be afraid something isn't working.
It's not just on/of, there are volume choices as well. I'm trying it at low.
I don't mind the beep. I mind the lan cable randomly disconnecting though 😤
Nope
Nope. Not ever. I love the beep. I just wish the PS5 had a more interesting boot screen.
Mute? No but they have 3 volumes to choose from and the current one is highest, will likely turn it down a notch or two.
I love it and instantly turned it off.
I am vehemently against muting the beep. That beep gives me joy.
I like the beep, but so does my toddler who has discovered what buttons to press to make it happen multiple times per day. Definitely muting!
Nope, it doesn’t bother me
No, this is the dumbest update yet. Like what a waste of resources on something no one complained about. There are so many ugly aspects of the PS5s OS that needs to be fixed, but they work on stopping the power on beep. 🤦♂️
Immediately.
I like the beep but I also like the option to mute it, when I don’t want the family to know that I am playing.
Yes, given how stupidly L-O-U-D the beep is!
@WaveBoy Yes, the PS5 still seems to have an issue where it turns itself on for no reason whatsoever so I suppose it'd be a warning that it had done it. That said, it (usually) changes over to the relevant HDMI socket. Had it before with TV on, power on Freesat box and then the PS5 thinks it'll interfere and turn itself on as well!?
PS5 UI is a total car crash - especially when you compare it to the PS4.
Keeping mine on. It's been useful at times when something hits my controller such as setting another controller on top of it and switches the console on. Gives me a heads up the TV is about to change
The only thing on a game console I ever muted is the XBOX Series X startup noise (not the beep but the actual sound from the TV). For some reason, Microsoft decided to make the startup noise 500% louder than all other sounds. Even at 8% tv volume it would explode my speakers and destroy my eardrums.
If there was an option to lower it, I would have. But it was either mute, or have it shatter my windows. The console beeps I don’t mind but that’s cause I live alone lol.
As someone who uses dual sense for pc aswell , the beep helps to know if i turned my ps5 on by mistake
Don’t mind it, so I’ll leave it…to the chagrin of my cat. XD
I lowered the volume of the beep. But there’s no poll option for just lowering it. In the settings there’s a high and low or off.
@GKT Been using a LAN cable since PS5 release day, and the only time I've had it "disconnect" is when I've bounced the router. Sounds to me like you have a bad cable or a bad connection - I haven't heard anybody else complain of disconnections before.
@bassjas12 I hope you never had a PS1 you probably would have died.
No, I like the beep, especially when ps5 is so silent, so I know I already turn it on.
@sorteddan That's the true option we need
The loud beep is awful. I get it if a quick beep doesn't bother you but it's weird to me that some people think it is an essential part of their PS experience. Y'all have Stockholm syndrome.
Keeping the beep. Love it.
However, I did turn off all controller-based audio previously…
Keeping the beep. Its an indicator from the system. It serves a purpose, and its not like its a minute long alarm. Surprised it bothers some people. Its also kinda like a Pavlov's dog thing as well. When I hear that beep I know I'm home, have no major obligations, and am about to enjoy quality mental stimulation.
Raise your hand if your wife ever complained about you playing games late due to hearing the beep, hehe.
I'll mute this ASAP. =)
I have the media remote. My 1 year old loves the media remote. The beep is my reminder that my 1 year old loves the media remote and has found the media remote.
Leave the beep alone.
Where's the 'set it to low immediately' option?
The beep has a purpose but FFS who thought it necessary for it to be so loud in in the first place?
Bit bored of the beep so have turned it off.
Be cool if you could swap it for another famous PlayStation sound instead though.
Kratos Leviathan Axe throw/retrieve sound comes to mind.
I can't believe it has an article about 'beep' 🤣
Surprise, Surprise... most of my devices make noise when it turns on. AND I didn't write a blog about it... yet.😀
i just want to know how i become one of these "qualified users".
anyone know? do they keep tabs on how long your console is on? whos behind do i have to kiss to become one, yknow?
Justice for the beep
I have mixed emotions about it
It does give some feedback when pressing the on button, so it would feel weird without it. It also triggers this Pavlov effect that lets your brain know its time to sit down and play some video games and enjoy yourself.
On the other hand its unnecessarely loud and attracts unwanted attention from other house members. I think the Pavlov effect on my wife is that she checks if there is some household jobs to do for me XD
I'll leave it on because often i turn my TV off with HDMI source set to console. The feature of the TV turns on PS5 (works both ways) and i dont want my PS5 on when i'm watching cable, Prime Video or YT.
Yes I don't mind the beep at all ,as others have said, you know it's time for some fantastic gaming, great to have as option to turn off as well though for people that want to turn it off
I try to time a cough so I don’t hear it but don’t always get it right so yeh probs
@deathaxe Different cables, routers, even a different isp (switched for other reasons), randomly disconnects and reconnects. Tried other possible safe mode fixes as well lol. But yeah, wifi works without a hiccup.
@RobN Fortunately, searching "lan cable randomly disconnects ps5" turned up many results. Unfortunately, none of them seem to really work 😟 lol. My wifi rules, but I'd feel a lot better hardlined. Oh well I guess
Wish it was like it was for the PS4. Muted when starting through Remote Play, but not otherwise.
Keeping the beep so I can hear the PS come on when I'm activating remote play from another room
@BeerIsAwesome Although, you could just answer the poll only.
@SystemAddict That "hack" is specifically reserved for when using a public toilet and timed to when mr brown hits the water 💩
I don't use the system enough to bother, so, nope.
Currently, I keep my console on overnight as to not alert my wife & kids that I get up at 5:00 AM to play ESO. Muting the beep will give rest mode some more use.
Also, during the day when I turn my console on I’d cough to mask the beep lol. If any of you don’t have kids you’ve probably never done this. But you will…
It needs to be LOUDER! and beep ever 15 seconds to let you know it’s still on! Actually, the Sony Inzone H9’s do this when your out of range of the transmitter and it’s extremely annoying
No and if u turn it off u should be ashamed of yourself 😶🌫️
No, there's really no reason to unless you have it in a room where you are playing it late at night and don't want somebody to hear the beep when you turn it on. Otherwise it's basically the notification that it is actually turning on whenever you turn it on, or if you happen to do it by accident. I voted that it's integral because in a way it is.
I'm not faulting the people who actually want this feature, but it's also sad that there are several features that really do need to either be changed or added, and we are getting this instead. It makes you wonder what they are truly doing when actual integral features that should already be there continue to get ignored, but they spend time with updates like the one that's in beta now.
@KilloWertz i get what you're saying, but my argument with this is always that i am sure Sony are working on the big issues people want fixed, but they are more complicated and so take longer to implement. Whereas this is a small thing they can roll out fairly quickly.
Alternatively, perhaps i am giving them way too much credit 😅
It helps me know when the controller button was properly (or improperly) registered as pressed. And it helps to lemme know when I've successfully gone into the safe mode. Def not turning it off.
The beep has been with us since the PS3. It’s just part of PlayStations for me at this point. When it beeps it’s like the system reminding me that it’s fun time!
I find the beep comforting because it means I'm about to have a lot of fun.
I think it would be better if the beep were replaced by the PlayStation chime from their ads:
https://youtu.be/pY-otycoQpY
Hell nah. I don’t change for no one. I go mad hard.
Is it a big deal because people think their ps5 is insulting them, but it's beeped out because Sony censors everything?
Wow. Can you believe this article has gotten over a hundred comments? All over a beep.
@Rob_230 I get what you're saying as well, but I still find it hard to believe that they couldn't have features like Check for Updates for your whole library rather than just on the Home screen by now.
That and obviously my oft-mentioned pet peeve of the forced Activity Cards that essentially ended up taking away the game art as the background from the games on the Home screen. I may never understand why we didn't at least get the option to revert this part back, especially since it doesn't alway work right anyways.
@Shepherd_Tallon exactly this. Its always been a feature i've never been bothered about. The ps3 and ps4 had a post beep and was never an issue. I guess in todays "there always has to be a trigger" society that this is now a thing 🤣
May that cursed sound never wake wife, dachshund or bub ever again. Begone!
The beep is life. The beep is the only thing that prevents me from falling into the abyss. The all-consuming power of the beep helps me keep my chakra centered and is also known to have a positive influence on energy levels and overall health, based on peer-reviewed studies.
I need it on so can be alerted if my kid puts it on or someone accidentally knocks it in with a pad. Also I don't think it's annoying or over load. It's just a beep
@sorteddan there should be an option to choose how many beeps you want, just so you can set mates ps5s to 100 while they're not looking 😂
I’m sure the people
Taking the beep off are the ones who are terrified of there wife’s knowing they just turned there computer
On , now they can play in secret with out there other half’s permission
Anyone who genuinely has an issue with the sound needs some perspective on life.
Leave the Beep alone.
Why is there no option for lowering the volume... ? Because that's what I will do.
I don’t mind the beep but I’m a parent so it’s handy to mute or even lower the volume lol. It’s weird not hearing the beep though after being so used to it to the point where you feel you push the power button hard enough or controller doesn’t work 😆
I don't mind the startup beep. What annoys me is the angry beep after a power failure.
I like the beep. I feel like it's my PS5 exclaiming in excitement that we're about to go on a journey
The beep is often quickly followed by "... are you playing again?" I'd rather not announce it every time.
Beep lets me know if I accidentally turn on the console so It shall stay.
Nah, I don't mind the beep at all.
I will be muting it, but not because it bothered me in any way. It's just a pointless feature that should only be used for posting the hardware. Right now we have an LED indicator that does most of this functionality and mostly need to know its active state.
I also feel like the beep was a pointless feature added to the playstation brand that started with the PS3. Why? Didn't need it on PS1 or PS2, neither of which beeps. So it was a questionable addition. The PlayStation startup is already iconic with each system. I guess with resume on PS4 and PS5 we don't hear that startup, but do we need it?
To add insult to injury, none of my Nintendo Hardware does this. Pretty sure my xbox's have never done this. So ya, don't need it.
Funny thing about beep heaters is that some claim to own every existing game device in the world, so why don't you get rid of the PS5? so the beep is gone and on the other side, another one claims that the beep "bothers the babies" when in fact it does bother their Nan, Mother or Miss... I can hear your mom/nan/miss screaming: are you going to use that bloody thing again?, haha... you know that they develop Superman PS5 beep hearing but when you ask for something, they are completely deaf... but there's an undeniable fact: your crying, screaming and cursing playing COD, Fornite, FIFA and GTA is beyond all your "gaming devices" and PS5 beep, because when you move close to PS5 and else, they shall note it, with beep or without beep, lol...
It’s a bit short and sharp - couldn’t it be made more pleasant to the ears?
The beep is like hearing a cork being pulled from a bottle of wine.
@daddycool197 Best answer of the year !!!
God yes. I've muted the hell out of it already because it's the most annoyingly shrill sound ever. Not one person at Sony said "hang on guys, should we go for a nice pleasant double tone or make it sound like cat fangs being scraped down a glass chalkboard?"
Honestly. The worst sound a console has ever made. I'd rather hear it chewing my discs up tbh. 🤣😂
@XinGViruS You can mute, have low, medium or default. The low and medium are OK tbf
Xbox One I did when I found out the feature existed.
I get it for POSTing regardless of annoyance. I too find it annoying but more so on consoles and when I want to use them (so Xbox One or handhelds to no lights and no beep). On PC if changing a bunch of stuff I don't mind it being active to inform me about something. Consoles aren't needing to as barely making changes with them in the same way.
Low/medium should have been the default. In general, for parents not waking up their kids/others around them for a night gaming session depending on how their day is. Doesn't even apply to me and makes sense for that purpose as well. It's the in general for me.
I see a reason for the sound but I also like it quiet.
PS3/4, well if it's exclusive to PS5 I think it's hilarious.
PS3 sure they don't update it anymore I get that I can take it not being added there, but PS4 they do update still I have yet to do the latest firmware so maybe it's available in that (I doubt it) so I'd find it stupid a sound setting is PS5 exclusive the same way the wishlist is. When Xbox One had it probably a while I don't know when they added it.
I wouldn't take buying a PS5 for worse folders as a downgrade to go oh well I can turn the startup sound off now. XD And OS elements matter to me as well as games.
I'll turn it off at night, so that my wife can't hear me sneak on to the PS5 and strangely want to cuddle as soon as she hears that beep. #Freedom
I will be leaving the beep. It's definitely a good feature to include, but it's not that noteworthy.
Atmos, on the other hand, I'll be looking forwards to.
@AhmadSumadi "what's this game?" "Can I have a go?" "He's said a swear words!"
🫨
i agree. If the PS5 didn’t beep, I would not know I had turned it on. Sure, it goes into rest mode again, eventually. But that’s not the point.
I am far more interested the three simple words : “Dolby Atmos Support”. Thank you. Finally.
I think that the PS3 and PS4 have a friendly, subtle beep to say 'here we go!'.
PS5 simply shouts in your face, bit like the whole experience of using the unfriendly, oversized blob.
Either get rid of it or allow us to change it to something better. An awake noise rather than the noise from a 90's device.
And give us the control of colours for our stripes. They constantly show it with the blue lights but we get the rubbish white ones. WE WANT THE BLUE!
For 17 years, the BEEP has haunted and taunted me, always snitching on me when I'm trying to game and my wife is doing something else or sleeping. Waking up our kids when they were babies, or just being loud and annoying in general.
I am finally free!
Rumour is stars is being fully integrated into ps5 software too 👌
@BoomBoomBrucey Ah I know that, I meant why is there no option in the poll for that
