Roughly 18 months after its first reveal back at Sony's second PlayStation 5 presentation, Avalance Software has finally lifted the lid on Hogwarts Legacy with a State of Play showcase. We now know so much more about the magical game set before the Harry Potter era, including that it'll launch at the end of this year. The developer in question also shared an in-depth look at gameplay, detailing what we can expect as our custom student works their way through Hogwarts.
With all that information out in the open, then, we have a question to pose: will you buy Hogwarts Legacy? Has today's gameplay showcase convinced you to pick the title up, or are you just not interested? Place your vote in our poll, then share your full thoughts in the comments below.

I am no fan of Harry Potter but that looked bloody good. I imagine it’s like Christmas for the super fans, and fair play. I reckon I will get it!
Given its multi platform and did a reveal on State of Play, it would be such a big baller move for the game to be the first, first day release to the new Project Spartacus subscription. Go on Sony, you know you want to.
Oh yes definitely. I've always had a thing for the Harry Potter universe.
That had no right looking as good as it did.
I knew it was going to look good, and have a good world and everything, but not that good! By fans for fans.
After this trailer, if you have a slight interest in the franchise, you must buy it. It looks like everything we could've hoped for.
I can't even believe this is as good as it is, I wasn't too hopeful for it
My only experience with Harry Potter are the films and even at the time I didn’t like them much but I hope fans will enjoy it.
Not that much into Harry Potter but it looks a meaty game with lots to do and see. Graphically it's a bit of a rough diamond in places but that's what the polishing phase is for.
Will probably try to get a Special Edition or something. Looks great. Even better than I expected. Super sold.
If the gameplay is even just good, that is going to be incredible. So much there, I am a bit worried that they can deliver on the promise, but it already looks so fleshed out. I am beside myself with excitement, it was already going to be a Day 1 purchase for me but now I'm counting the days. Have to figure Thanksgiving release to get that buzz leading up to Christmas.
Looked really cool, just will not preorder, i will wait for performance analysis/patches. When it's good to go, then i will buy it.
Not a huge Harry potter fan but this Looks like it could be a goty contender to me hopefully that room of requirement won't be the room of micro transactions
That trailer was impressive. It's a strong single player experience, and basically everything I wanted for the game. As long as it runs fine on a PS4 and there's no major issues, I'll likely grab it soon after launch.
I'm not a fan of Harry Potter. But this game has me excited. It looks exactly like the type of game I like to play. So yes please I'll take it. To bad no specific date yet. Holiday sounds so vague
Most likely. The idea of going to class for a good chunk of the game isn’t especially appealing, but everything else looks great.
I'd fallen out of love with Harry Potter a while ago, the Fantastic Beasts films were alright, but on top of all the Rowling ridiculousness on Twitter (controversy and tiny lore additions) I was ready to be done with the world.
But this game looks amazing. Still needs a bit of polish (the snow on the robes looked odd) but otherwise does look outstanding
In CEX a year down the line, sure. The devs have been paid, so your money from this will be going directly into Rowling and Warner Bros’ pockets.
If they reviews are good to me, sure. Why not.

Yes. Was already sold, this was just extra icing on the cake.
I was 100% all in... Until I saw the real time countdown timers for the potion brewing in the room of requirement.
I immediately thought "Awww damn! Don't tell me the game is going the mobile game route of having some" rare gem" that will speed up the process and you can purchase in bulk with real money on a digital storefront"
I never buy microtransactions. If this game pushes the way of mobile and deliberately forces a grind if you don't invest, I'll sadly leave it.
Hoping it's not the case though!
It looks amazing other than that issue.
@nessisonett what about the sequel then?
Looks solid, though the combat seems to lack some depth beyond shooting stuff from your wand one enemy at a time, not to mention looking animation locked. I know it's just the nature of magic in the Hogwarts world but it does seem rather uninspired. Everything else looks ambitious.
@Perryg92 I missed that.
I hope they learned from shadow of war.
@nessisonett same here, plan on getting it second hand at some point because the game does look good, but I refuse to pad that hatemongers pockets.

This game is in the realms of dream territory. Day 1. It looks so good
Aaaaand there goes the comment section.
@nessisonett Spot on.
I am so excited! I am big fan of the books and movies. The games have always been some of my favorite video games ever. So, I definitely can't wait. My only question is character customization and the option to pick your own house... I don't know if they said anything about that in the video.
No question about it, this looks incredible.
Wow great showcase. Looked really great! I hope we can play some Quidditch too since they already got riding broomstick. I do think the combat looked a little one dimensional but still solid enough. Shoutout to the environmental artists though Hogwarts and everything around it look absolutely excellent. Count me in!
It looks good but I will wait for the performance test and review when it comes.
@Mintie That's the plan for me. Buy it pre-owned.
I have no interest in Harry Potter however this had me tempted until I seen the combat which looks like it lacks something. Couldn't help but notice a few enemies but you seemed to be fighting one at a time.
It stood out enough to me to be quite jarring.
I'll see how it reviews an probably pick it up once it's on sale.
The solution would be for the game to be offered as part of a subscription so people don't have to deal with the guilt of buying it (I know she'll still be compensated but...)
My wife is a big fan so this will make a great Christmas gift. I probably won't get to use my playstation for a few months though.
The sorting hat is the devil incarnate. He's the real villain of the Harry Potter series.
Harry Potter and the Tree of Nothing.

Definitely. I'll be there at launch, fanciest edition they've got. Haven't been this excited for a game launch since Monster Hunter World. I hope and pray it lives up to at least some of the hype.

Let's try to focus on the game if possible. I understand that Hogwarts Legacy doesn't exist in a vacuum, and there are wider discussions to be had, but this isn't necessarily the venue for them.
This puts us in an incredibly difficult spot because we want to provide a place for people to discuss the game, but if we can't do it without delving into the wider politics surrounding it then we're just going to have to close them on every article, which I don't think anyone wants to do.
As Brian Potter once said 'Everybody loves a bit of Potter'. Well most people.
Yep but it really depends on dates, if it's around Gotham Knights I'll pick that up first and if - if!! - we get GOW Ragnarök at the back end of the year that'll be my first port of call.

That was one of the best State of Play's yet. Lets hope Sony does something similar very soon for both God of War and Final Fantasy 16
Watched the State of Play with my eldest. She states it looks good and will be adding it to her Christmas list.
@FatalBubbles I don't want to remove anyone's comments but there's no positive discussion to be had here. The question in the article asks if you'll be buying the game, and some have answered that by pointing out why they might not.
I don't mind if you disagree, but I feel we're straying off-topic if we delve deep into the politics of this. At the end of the day if people don't want to buy the game then they don't have to, regardless of the reason.
@get2sammyb Then you should remove ALL comments regarding it. Not just the ones defending her.
@Floki They said you can be sorted into any of the four Houses. And you can customise your character, yes.

@FatalBubbles Appreciate the feedback, but I disagree. Readers can express their reason for why they might not buy a game in an article that explicitly asks whether they'll be buying the game.
There's no real reason to dig deeper into the politics of that, though, as the thread will quickly get off topic. I would suggest it's best to just accept some people may feel differently about this than you do, and that's fine. The game is still available for the rest of us to buy and enjoy.
I'm sure you can appreciate this is a very complex and complicated topic, and it's going to be a challenge to moderate. Mistakes may be made. But ultimately I think we're all here to enjoy games together, and in my opinion the best way to do that in this instance would be to not take the thread off-topic and debate the views of JK Rowling any deeper than we need to.
As long as it does not have some weird online DRM thing I will 100% buy it!
I do not care one tiny bit about the politics behind it

Yeah this game will be Slytherin its way onto my shelf on day one.
I might buy it. How they use the dualsense will likely influence how day one I am about it. It looks like it could be pretty great. The JK Rowling stuff doesn't bother me at all.
@Broosh Nice!
Not interested at all.
@Jaz007 You'd like to think the DualSense would be used very tastily here.
Does this really look good, or is it just potter fans yearning for a half decent game?

Having grown up with the books and movies, this is a dream game for me if it lives up to the potential shown. I remember getting my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and beginning to read it immediately.
My GOTY if it really is that good.
Definitely buying, will probably pre-order and might be the first ps5 release where I stump up for a special edition. That state of play was awesome!
I don't even like Harry Potter (apart from Lego Harry) but this looks flipping great! I NEVER thought I'd get excited about a Harry Potter game..
@DarthKiwi Oh man, I didn't even consider Special Editions!
JKs world is amazing and getting to explore it as presented here is superb. The attention to detail is a dream I hope I get sorted into Hufflepuff and I will be buying this day one. 100%.
@MatthewJP It genuinely looks really good in my opinion. Great art direction, tons of potential for exploration, interesting combat (jury's still out, but it looks different at least), unique time period and setting.
All the creative stuff is a real surprise to me, but makes so much sense in hindsight.
@get2sammyb My wallet is a little concerned at what they'll come up with lol. Endless possibilities.
Here's hoping we have Gobstones, chess and all that stuff. They showed a game that looked kinda like gobstones? A really cool sidequest regarding being the champ of the Dueling Club would be awesome.
@Lup Yeah there's loads of potential for fun little minigames and side-activities here to add to the richness of the world.
Not a potter fan myself, but from a gamer perspective this looks great. I have seen all the film's though, so at least I know some lore.
A game that is not going to come out for a couple of years? Yeah no excitement just disappointment 🙄🙄
@kyleforrester87 pretty much just posted the same thing on the other article - not my sort of thing, but looks cool and I might get it
Massively on board now. Saw absolutely no reason not to get this.
I’m imaging spell sounds through the controller and the haptic feedback being put through it’s paces with this game, could be so good
@Lup Yeah. I saw that part after I went back and rewatch the video. I missed it the first time since I watch the stream while at work. XD
It sad that they spend more than 20 seconds on it tho.
This looks like a game crafted with love and respect for the source material. Im not a big potter fan, but this excellent showing suggests I'll be a big fan of this game.
This is shaping up to be an all time classic year for games!
Day 1 buy here as I don't give a flip about politics. Certain media going to be looking real foolish when this game sells gangbusters
I can't bring myself to support anything Harry Potter now.
@huyi It’s out this Christmas!
I’d not been following this, so assumed it was going to be a Harry Potter game, but I’m so pleased it’s a Hogwarts game instead. I love the books, but I think setting this in a completely different time with different characters is a fabulous idea. I never buy day one, but I’ll grab it at some point
It looks really good.definetly getting it.that was a good state of play .graphics looks good.gameplay.and story looks interesting.word up son
@Fragile It's really cool to see reactions like this, the development team must be thrilled. Obviously I'm sure their goal is to make a game existing fans will love first and foremost, but it must be so rewarding to see reactions from people who haven't even read the books who are excited for it!

@get2sammyb this presumes a lot of your readership won’t be bothered by the things bothering you. The ability to just enjoy the game as it is represents a huge privilege: I don’t have these problems, therefore we don’t need to talk about them. Please discuss with experts around you before deciding this is the path you want to take. So disappointing.
Maybe years down the line in a steep discount. I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan.
My wife is a big HP fan and I like the series alright. We thought it looked pretty decent. We might pick it up to play together - my wife said I have to do all the combat. I probably won't be getting it on day one, it's not like we won't still have a toddler when it comes out
I really want to, but gotta wait for the reviews.
Do you even need to ask? I would already buy it day 1 before seeing how insanely great it looks. Great work on this game, they really embraced the wizarding world.
My single concern is that it's trying too many things at once, and the only game I've played that managed to be successful at everything it offered is the new God of War. I hope it delivers, but I'm sure it'll be at least fun and good looking. =)
It looks very promising, but I don't trust WB to not screw with it in some way to shove in obscene microtransactions.
I'll be buying this but not because i'm a potter fan but because the game just looks really cool..also nice to see push square taking a stance and not letting the comments section be hijacked by the usual suspects to promote their own agendas...kudos 👍
@lolwhatno the mtx should not be an issue for anybody who can choose to purchase them or not to purchase them..mtx's are here to stay and so long as they are not overly aggressive in their implimentation and they do not make any competative game unfair i think its good people have a choice..i see loot boxes in a different light as those buggers are gambling mechanics..plain and simple..
Too early to ask.
Maybe but I’m now interested whereas I wasn’t before.
Still need to see more and reviews to get a feel of how it plays in particular repetitive combats and tedious rpg mechanics.
Edit
That’s how reviews can be informative and not random scores saying absolutely nothing of value regarding the way the game might be enjoyable to you (as opposed to being enjoyable to a professional)
It could say 10/10 but that’s say nothing about the gameplays being pleasant to you or not.
Looks fantastic so providing nothing bad gets revealed i shell get it day 1.
Undecided but if I got time when it releases I’ll pick it up. Looks super promising.
Big Potter fan here so I was already sold before the State of Play but after watching that I'm dying to play it and I need it now! It's the game I've been wanting for a long time!
Love Harry Potter, but I will not get it if there is even a trace of microtransactions.
Not a Potter fan, and under no circumstances do I want to be giving money to J.K. Rowling.
I'm OK with, say, HP Lovecraft stuff because the man is dead and buried and no longer profiting from his IP, but I can't in good conscious buy and play stuff by Rowling or Cawthorne because I know they get some of that money and how they've used that money.
Assuming they don't cram microtransactions into the room of requirement, then hell yeah! Looks like the best Harry Potter game since the PS1 ones!
Genuinely surprised at how fun it looked, as others have said, combat looks very one note but plenty of time to see how it all pans out. Very wary of pre ordering games now after so many have glitched at launch so likely will wait for reviews / updates before buying as there’s gonna be so many games to play around that time anyway!!
Not a Potter fan (although the Robert Galbraith books are excellent) but my none-gaming wife and teen daughter both love Potter and the game looks dope so I'll no doubt get it and be consigned to "do the buttons" while my girls choose what we must do next.
The game looks absolutely fantastic! I cannot wait, and im not even a Harry Potter fan. It just looks like a great game.
I'm not that interested in the Harry Potter story, but I do like the wider world the story is set in.
I might watch this presentation again later. Right now it's a no for me, but I'm open to being convinced.
Looking at the studios history , I think they are going to have to step it up for this to match expectations.
can't be bothered.
Why? Go back to your backlogs and at least wait for a review..
@Northern_munkey yes we’ll said I too am happy to see PushSquare take a stance against this blatant trolling.
Like yourself I too am not a fan of the franchise but watching this game with a lot of interest looks great so far. Will very strongly consider picking this up.
This honestly looks like everything I've wanted, but I'm not sure if I'm comfortable supporting JK Rowling right now
Combat looks super stiff. Everyone is just standing in one place. It looked liked the player was forcing themselves to remember to roll every now and then. Not convinced tbh. Something about the combat doesn’t seem right, it’s too static
U watched 1 minute and i was really happy so yes this one is day one.
I absolutely loved the books and movies, but strangely enough I have absolutely ZERO interest in this game and no, that has NOTHING to do w/ J.K. Rowling. She's entitled to her opinion as much as any of us. I would just rather play something else altogether.
Haven't seen the DLC yet.
@kappasig390 whole world doesn't celebrate thanksgiving ( American thing) but it should
A decent presentation, I was not interested and now it's at least on my radar. I have no nostalgia for the ip, but it definitely looks like it could make a great setting for a game if they manage to do it right.
Well it looks incredible. The graphics are unbelievable and the gameplay looks like it could be good.... But I'm just not a fan of the franchise. I could maybe look past that but the other issues I have with the author in particular mean I can't support it.
I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan, but I have to say that the presentation impressed me quite a bit and I'm looking forward to this.
I would have definitely bought this day one, but because of a certain reason, I will wait for a sale. This game does look really good tho and wish it had some sort of co op.
I'm seeing some really dumb comments online from people who oppose JK Rowling's views but still feel entitled to pirate the game. And they justify it by saying it won't hurt the devs because they've already been paid for their work. If that's the case then what's morally stopping them from pirating literally anything else? They have no moral superiority here.
@get2sammyb oh it finally has a release date? Hallelujah finally! 🥳🥳
@ThomasHL and why is that? What has she done?
@WallyWest for me, this would be a rare occasion that I buy a game day one, I'm a big Harry potter fan anyways, have all the books and films on blu ray and have all the older PS3 and PS1 games too so this is a big deal for me 👍👍😁
The game looks great but it felt like you have to watch all the harry potter movies to really know what's going on.
Id say it one for the real harry potter fans only as its so deep with potter knowledge.
Removed - off-topic
I have been looking forward to Hogwarts Legacy since the very first announcement.
I worked in a cinema, when the first film came out - and it was complete mayhem. Always enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, but I did not read the books until much later on.
I consider myself a huge HP fan, even now I am in my forties.
But I agree with some of the comments, that I have little interest in playing a character as a Gryffindor - seems a little too safe, and well …boring.
Either a Ravenclaw, (like Luna Lovegood) or a Hufflepuff (like Newt Scamander) seems better.
But I suppose that will be up to the Sorting Hat.

Think I'd rather watch every episode of The Worst Witch followed by some generic, mind-numbing fantasy trash because. to me, that's what Rowling's banal clap-trap is. Cannot understand the fascination.
I had moderate interest in Hogwarts until the State of Play, which very much turned me off. The combat looks dull, and I have little to no interest in the "life sim" aspects of the game.
Read the books when I was a kid they were really good watched 1st film couldn't get into it...I'm a books are usually better than the film person and I played the 1st game on ps1 coz my lil bro was bought it Xmas but the world outside of the books just never clicks with me so yeah not 4 me hope it does well and is good 4 the fans 😀 👍
I will not buy this game for "these reasons".
The answer is yes, at some point after I'm able to get a PS5, whenever that happens to be. And at that point, it will get in line behind at least a dozen other games that I'm more interested in and/or have been out longer.
I do expect to buy it, but probably not before 2024 at the earliest. Hopefully it will be on sale and have any bugs worked out at that point too.
Oh most definitely a pre-order/day one buy for me! I've been a fan of the franchise ever since my 5th grade glass was required to read the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone.
This is my childhood dream game and I can't wait to play! I'll be exploring every single nook & cranny, and will try to 100%/platinum the game.
@AstraeaV Did they confirm there will be DLC? I haven't heard anything.
isnt this game like 10 years too late?
Harry who?? Lookit the player go in the trailer's combat!!
Makes the Potter kid look like a lightweight in terms of magic skills, dunnit?
(if the player character is that powerful - is that a canon problem ?)
And looking at the comments, I didn't think it would be this divisive !
When I get a PS5, Ill get it. This convinced me to buy the next console.
Wasn't convinced before the State of play, but now i am!
I'll be getting this for sure. Not a huge Harry Potter fan but this game just looks incredibly fun.
Day 1 for me. As a massive fan of the books and the audio books, read by the fabulous Stephen Fry and a somewhat fan of the films (despite missing out alot of information) im very much looking forward to entering the wizarding world. Im interested to see how you will be sorted in to a house 🤔. Will it be based on some answered questions or acts before the sorting? and what impact that has on certain elements during the play through. The combat looked a tad stiff at times but im guessing some polishing will be done to that. I really feel like this could be a magical game as long as the Micro t's are left out, which they say they are.
I dont get involved in the political side of things.
I love HP and I think JK Rowling is a genius. This game is gonna be an awesome experience.
