We've had to endure months of social media teasing from industry "insiders", but we're finally here: the newly tiered PlayStation Plus subscription service has been officially announced. Thank god. But it's safe to say that initial impressions have been mixed — as you'd probably expect.
If you haven't actually seen what the new PS Plus tiers look like, here's a very quick breakdown (and you can find our full article on the subject by clicking here):
- PS Plus Essential - Base PS Plus as it is right now (£6.99 / $9.99 per month)
- PS Plus Extra - Base PS Plus + a catalogue of "up to 400" PS5 and PS4 games that you can download (£10.99 / $14.99 per month)
- PS Plus Premium - Base PS Plus + PS Plus Extra game catalogue + "340" additional games, including the ability to stream PS3 titles, and download or stream a selection of PS1, PS2, and PSP games (£13.99 / $17.99 per month)
But as always, we want to know what you think. Will you be subscribing to one of these new PS Plus tiers? Vote in our polls, and then give us an early verdict in the comments section below.

Compared to the game pass, the merit is less.
Yes, will be going with the Premium!
Just sticking with the ps plus “essential” tier and will wait to see how the service pans out!
As a collector, no.
I might go with Extra depending on the list of games.
I never expected this to be anything more than it is and honestly getting the PS Now downloadable library + more 1st party games, for a lower price, where PS Now was never available in the first place - that sounds good to me.
I’m pumped and going fully in with Premium. I’ll give it to end of the year to see how it is at least.
I already have Now so Premium it is!
I need premium dude, PREMIUM!
NO
Not interested at all with PS+ or whatever.
I only made my account to buy DLC from PS4 PS Store.
I'd say it's pretty good at first glance but we need to see the catalogue.
I'm sticking with the regular PS Plus.
I'm honestly a bit disappointed. There's little chance of this happening now, but I'm hoping they eventually add in backwards compatibility emulation for PS1, PS2 and yes... even PS3 games. If that is an extra cost... then so be it, but it BC would be far and above better than what this new PS Plus offers.
PS Plus Extra is very enticing to me so I'm going with that. I haven't subscribed to PS+ for years but that might finally change now.
I need more info, but i might upgrade to the middle tier depending on what games are available.
100 pounds seems too steep for the top tier. I hope Sony give an option to purchase PS1, 2 and PSP content separately
I like the general idea but I need to know more. Not being able to download PS3 games, which I understand when it comes to PS4 but the PS5 is powerful enough to emulate them in my opinion. The second is I want to know if they are keeping the PS1, PS2 and PSP games behind the subscription so you can't buy any game separately. Also, I hope that a game in the subscription will offer both the PS5 and PS4 versions because that's something that Now does horrendously by only offering the PS4 versions.
Has no one else noticed that we'll only be receiving 2 games a month on the Essential tier going forward? Removing benefits slowly but steadily
Its very concerning that they wont add new Games monthly in the Premium and Extra Tier. And want 18€ for this.
need more details on what games will be available but I'm tempted to try out some PS2 games. Hopefully there more JRPG in it
@SeanOhOgain Yeah I saw that. The two other Tiers also wont be getting new Games monthly but "regularly" which could mean anything
Definitely going with extra at the bare minimum, depending on the classic games they add in whether or not they throw in Crunchyroll, it wouldn't be too hard to persuade me to go premium.
@Rob_230 100% sure the "Classic PS1-PS2" Games will simply be those already available on PS4. As in Manhunt, Parappa the Rapper 1/2, Siren and so on
I want to know how long it will be before new releases come to the premium tier. That’s key given GP’s day one releases.
@Sheppard they won’t. Christopher Dring interviewed Jim Ryan and said it would increase the cost. https://twitter.com/chris_dring/status/1508776476337975296?s=21&t=s77KhecCA-D0R0DJJEpV2Q
@mousieone Returnal will be there. That’s a little over a year since it’s release right? So will that be the standard? That’s my question.
I'm more interested in the PS+ Deluxe tier that will be offered to regions without Streaming for a cheaper price. Honestly, I could care less about streaming games, but they're forcing me to if I want the classic library.
Looks pretty good, surely the catalog is just gonna be the same as what’s on PS Now?
Can someone clarify, are they saying all the PS3 games on its PS store will be available? Or is it the PS3 games on PS Now that will be available?
@AinsleyE as far as I know it’s not about power, it’s about architecture. You can’t run something that your system doesn’t support. They used a cell processor so it’s an entirely different architecture to the x64/86 that’s used in PS4 & 5. I know there’s emulators on pc and they should have gone that route that but again, even the highest end pcs are not consistent with running PS3 games on emulation. But I agree, a solution should have been reached by now.
I need more info on the library of titles, but reliastically I already have more games than I have time, so I will probably stick to Essential.
100 quid a year. No brainer. I'll be signing up for that.
Just wondering how my stacked 2 years of Plus and 2 years of Now will transfer.
I will be sticking to my current price plan of £0. I dont play online or get sucked in to paying to play old games. Thats what my retro consoles are for. May buy a months plus every 6 months but that will only be to back my saves to the cloud.
Happy for the folk that are getting what they wanted tho.
I remember saying Sony can’t compete and they still can’t. Microsoft are happy with losing a lot of money so they can be loss leaders. Sony still want to profit off all their ventures, don’t expect day 1 releases, don’t expect all these benefits you might get from game pass, they can’t compete.
Hmm. I wonder how it will work if you just want to upgrade your sub for a month or two, but already have say a year of "essential".
Sony don't have a great track record of making things like that easy so I'm curious if they'll get this right
Seems like a decent deal. It’ll all come down to the game library, though. And if they’re going to wait a year minimum to add their big new titles, it might be a bit of a hard sell for me. Regardless, I’m interested… just need to hear more.
Depending on which classic games are available, I might go for premium. It has to have a lot of PS1 games, though. One reason I don't subscribe to NSO is because I don't really care for N64 games, there's like 3 or 4 Rare made titles I'd still play but that's not worth a recurring fee.
So have a great selection of PS1 games, maybe add online play to some of them like Twisted Metal and I'll sub. If Nintendo can add online play to N64 games, surely Sony can to PS1 titles and that would be huge, imo.
Extra may be worth it if they add additional games each month. Premium is the one that seems iffy right now, we'll have to see how the classic titles work, whether they get trophy support, etc.
Not too shabby, pretty much what was expected. I’ll stick to PS+ Essential though, I’m mostly interested in Sony’s excellent first party titles and I want to play them day one.
I feel safe staying with the Essential tier given my current and huge backlog of games.
I'll be sticking with the basic PS+ essential as I don't think I'll actually get 'value' from the other services. I have no interest in PS1, PS2, PSP or really PS3 era games and as I have the PS4/5 games I'm really interested in, as well as Game Pass Ultimate (which includes PC, Streaming, EA Access etc), I don't see the 'value' to me to add another 'tier', more expense, for something I doubt I'll get the value from.
That doesn't mean I think its 'terrible' value, its just that in my particular situation/circumstance, I don't think it makes sense to me at this time...
Who knows, things change, but right now, I'll just stick with PS+ as that's 'essential' to me being able to access/play any PS game I want, which I can't do without...
This is laughable and not at all in competition with game pass. Instead it looks to just milk more money out of the PS fan base. Jim Ryan needs to go.
Did they say what happens to those that have years of ps plus stacked right now?
It appears they completely botched back compat, only people celebrating this news are xbox & maybe the emulation groups ie duckstation, pcsx2 etc. What an own goal... MS is laughing at us right now
@Sheppard ah yeah gotcha. I think a year is a good estimate, depending or so. Someone thing like Destruction All Stars would be sooner.
It’s ok it’s what I wanted.
PS+ remains the same for me.
Fools can pay more to rent games if they want to it isn’t my problem.
😅
@LtSarge
These services do nothing for me personally and I don't or won't be subscribing to any of them other than the ability to play online.
I know the 'premium' tier sounds a bit like GamePass but in practice it would need big and recent third party deals along with their own first parties (not necessarily day one) to even come close to competing.
It all depends how pro-active they are on securing recent and frequent games to the service or they've already lost to GamePass. And this is coming from someone who prefers PlayStation.
I often play games after everyone else instead of at launch. If Sony keeps pushing blockbusters to this service after a year or something, I'm in!
In terms of tiers, I don't see the value on the Premium tier, to be honest. Why pay more to access older games on the cloud when a lower tier gives you access to recent modern games on their latest generations?
This is a downgrade for sure and a terrible deal. I'm currently subscribed to Plus but Essential will give 1 less game than the current (mostly mediocre 3 games) so when my sub is finished I won't renew.
The other tiers are garbage imho.
I'll be sticking to essential for the foreseeable future.
Premium for me! I just want to enjoy my PS1 games!
@Tielo Most people want PS1 and PS2 classics, and this is the first time they will be available on next gen systems.
@GADG3Tx87 Well they've already stated that they'll be adding Returnal to Extra so that's a good start in my opinion. I've been wanting to check out that game but not for €70. If they can add other titles like Demon's Souls and Sackboy, that would make Extra worth subscribing to for a month at a time. Who knows, maybe games like Horizon Forbidden West will get added next year.
It is exactly what I expected, with the addition of PSP games. Anyone that expected day 1 game drops or PS3 games offered non streaming at this point are delusional.
For me it all depends on what games are available with extra if i keep it to essential or might upgrade to extra (if that is even possible for existing yearly ps plus payers)
Yeah can’t say I’m impressed personally. Does nothing to address the general consensus of the monthly games’ declining quality, just makes you pay more if you want better stuff. If it wasn’t for the online access I’d cancel my sub for sure.
Pay $120 a year to play old games when Xbox has been doing this natively for ages now? Piss off, PlayStation.
Depending on the ps1-3 and PSP games on offer. I might just get a few months of premium to play the ones I really want to play if they're even on the service. Cause I'm sure as hell not paying double the amount yearly just to not end up owning these older titles
@LtSarge
I've got no doubt that day one first parties won't happen. They still have healthy sales of their titles. If they were to add first party titles around a year after release when they've had good sales, then.... Maybe.. it might be successful.
I mean if they're going into the services route then they will need a kick up the butt because GamePass already has a big, almost five year head start and a lot of recognition.
I mean, as I said while I do like my PlayStation I have scepticism on how Sony handles things, they can be pretty dumb. I guess time will tell, but I still hold firm against services because of my old fashioned ways of just buying a game. I still haven't even embraced digital distribution so the future going in this direction is a tough nut to swallow.
Might subscribe for a few months if the selection of downloadable PS2 classics is excellent. But mainly I'll stay unsubscribed.
I'm sticking w/ PS+ Essential, never calling it Essential again after this post, just PS+.
Do these older games have trophies? That would give them all an entirely new lease of life and might convince me to go back to them.
Would’ve nice to stream some of the turn based ones to my phone though, no interest or need in streaming to the tv my system is already connected to.
Shame about the PS3 games not being downloadable.
The devil is in the detail. I’d want good games to be included. But I doubt Sony will do a MS and get the likes of Yakuza LoD, not when it’s significantly cheaper that their offering.
740+ games that will be regularly refreshed for only 17euros that's good enough for me. With these subscription services I've become more cynical about what games I buy and when.
@dasd2
Which is, I guess, why the price is lower than Gamepass…makes sense.
@SeanOhOgain
It’s already 2 a month, the PS5 game has always been considered a bonus game. Of course it’s never going away. Don’t you remember plus before ps5 released? 2 games.
@IonMagi
Of course the other tiers get the 2/3 new games added. It’s says in the description they include the base ps+ in addition to the specified extras in that tier.
Prior to announcement, never subscribed.
After announcement, still not subscribing.
Online is still not worth more money on top of ISP to play (applies to MS and Nintendo as well)
i would like to see what ps1/2 games are included and that will make me decide if i want to upgrade
@thefourfoldroot Im talking about new monthly Games specific to Tier 2 and 2. Like PS Now also got 3-5 new Games a month lol
@IonMagi
Oh, I understand, didn’t get your wording. Would have been good if they specified how many per month were added to the collection.
Regarding your comment about it being the same ps1/2 games on Now already - there aren’t any PS1 games as far as I know ( and certainly no PSP), so I’m sure they are adding more (ParRappa the rapper was a remaster wasn’t it),
In fact, the fact there are no VITA games tells me they have an emulator for these, so many could be added pending licensing agreements being valid/renewed (VITA would be a nightmare to emulate given the touchpad controls).
@thefourfoldroot Parappa was still running on Emulator and all the Classic Games they added to PS4 were upscaled to 1080p/HD
Legacy content locked behind a massive pay wall is a real kick to the gonads.
@IonMagi
Yes, all the ps2 games were running on emulator. I don’t remember them having any emulated ps1 games was my point. I could be wrong? Only had NOW for a year.
Let me get this right... Essential is the same + service that costs £50 a year but its going to now cost £84 a year?
Too many questions to make a decision. At the end of the day it's about games. Until we know exactly what games are included, how long they remain, how often they are refreshed and many other details it's tough to make an informed decision.
But it's broadly what I expected. Unless PS+ Extra has several games I want to play I won't be upgrading from Essential. Returnal is the only one named i'm interested in.
@robjewitt The yearly price is still the same (59€, not sure how many £)
@robjewitt
No, it’s the same £49.99 (hopefully we still get the discounts, I never buy for more than £35).
Pointless. I didn't want to pay any more money and I won't be.
I renew PS Now every year anyway so just bought a few extra years worth. Got it until Oct 2025 now so I'm happy enough
@Rob_230 Much agreed,that great as it is finally seeing ps1/ps2/psp titles be playable via local download,that the legacy library will only be available /paywalled behind the Premium tier,(or Deluxe for regions like mine,priced at who knows what yet), is sadly predictable.
Its clever,& definitely a way to generate profit,but I'd hate to see the Suikoden games,or Alundra, Blood Omen Legacy of Kain,RE games,or the Maximo series unable to be played other than via subscription. 😕
The lack of any PS Plus subscription upgrades to the new tiers is a bit disappointing thus far too!🤔
Oh well,will keep voting with my wallet & keep picking up compilations ala TMNT when I can!
@Uncharted2007 Have you even bothered reading whats on offer?
They have litterally just announced ps1, ps2, psp download and play? PS3 remains streaming, but thats expected as the hardware would be inconsistent to emulate.
Its not a big draw for me, but its exactly what yiu are complaining they have not done?
@Uncharted2007 "I'm hoping they eventually add in backwards compatibility emulation for PS1, PS2 and yes... even PS3 games"
It's been said countless times already, it can't and won't happen for obvious reasons. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Essential for me, purely because I sometimes play online with a couple of mates or my old man.
Old games etc, not for me. I've got my old consoles if I want to play them and my son is an avid collector of retro consoles and games so if I ever feel the need, I'll just make do with that.
It's not overly impressive for the price IMO but it's pretty much entirely what I expected.
At a push I'd maybe go for "Extra" but really, if there is a game I want I'd prefer to just buy it so as I have access to it when I want and not have it tied to the subscription.
It’s fantastic. The “Extra” tier is EXACTLY what I was wanting.
Staying with essential until the other two offerings come to my country, if ever considering we never got PS Now.
Depends on the games offered at higher tiers.
As someone in that unfortunate situation of having way too little time, and too many (non PS+) games to play (start/continue/complete), this service is really not for me.
Looking at the current options though, there's nothing that's being offered that makes me reconsider my decision to be without PS+ since 2019.
As someone who still prefers his games on Disc and with limited time for gaming. I have no interest in these models above PS Plus. If classic games are with streaming, no thanks.
And why is there no bundle with Plus and the classics? I have no interest in PS Now.
No. I refuse to support any form of Subscription Service except one that I quite literally am forced into paying if I want to play the games I already payed for online. Plus is and always will be a big rip off IMHO.
As somebody who comes from the older generation it's quite concerning to see people here supporting these models yet these same people were likely the ones who were strongly against streaming services before.
I'll either stick with my basic Plus or go for the tier 3 if the classic games have trophies.
Just the bog standard one for me. No interest at all in any of the older games as I've already played all the ones i wanted to.
Why would i want another 740 really older games, some over 20 years old, when i can't even play all i have now.
So am i right that with Premium, there will be NO brand new games added like there are with GPU?
No..i'll keep my bog standard one..
At £100 they can bin it, no way would I pay that much to have access to rent legacy games, i still have all my retro consoles and don't need their subscription service! Smdh
@RubyCarbuncle excalty, I'm the same too, you know the saying about insidious behaviours "you will own nothing and be happy"
That is the world we are living right now
@huyi Exactly.
As I pay by year its still under what I pay for Gamepass so that is a plus I worry about how many PS One and 2 games we will see not seen anything yet that says they are going to be adding more than is already on ps4 and ps3
@huyi I hear you but I still give them credit for it being £30 cheaper than gamepass but I will get the top tier but keeping it will depend on the games added
Plus Extra is where I'll land as long as the selection of games is half decent. I don't need streaming or classic titles. That does nothing for me. But for $40 extra bucks a year to have a few hundred extra games at my fingertips? Not shabby. Cheaper than buying a XSS and subbing to Game Pass, which I did last gen for the third party titles, anyhow.
Ps plus extra for me most likely. I may give premium the first couple of months thanks to psnow.
@Katep how much is Microsoft game pass anyways, is it above £100? Per year
MS Game Pass offers no discount for buying a year - so in the US, it's $10 or $15/month, or $120/180 a year, depending on which version you get.
Sony's bottom two levels look similar in pricing, but offer a savings if you buy a quarter at a time, and a bigger savings if you buy them annually. That's one reason my Plus is set to expire in late 2023 - discounts off the annual price can make it ridiculously cheap.
So, it will be interesting to see what the benefits of the Premium tier really are (specific titles and benefits), but Extra sure looks like a good deal if you like any of the titles it has and don't own them already.
Details of how Sony converts accounts for people with both Plus and Now will be interesting. MS really boosted their Game Pass numbers by being generous with their conversion rules when they introduced it (a month of Gold translated to a month of Game Pass, at the time, so I bought a 2-year membership at a rare price discount).
@huyi
I pay 30 a month for game pass ultimate so it works out £130 this from Sony is £100 so 30 cheaper
Interested yo see what the Real Price (aka CDKeys) will be.
If I get access to Silent Hill 1 - 4, I am in for at least a year.
That is all.
I'll see what it cost come BlackFriday and Christmas mark down.
If I can get it working on SteamDeck by then, there will be more incentive.
As someone whose Game Pass Ultimate sub expires in May I'm not and never again will be into the subscription model. Way too many games. You feel forced to play them, otherwise you feel like you're overpaying. I have no interest in PS1,2 and 3 games. I already have all the exclusives I want. Actually, I got so excited by this news that I bought a Switch 😂
@thefourfoldroot i remember several years ago recieving 6 games a month 😰 Maybe they describe it as a bonus but it's essentially part of the service; the expectation when it dropped to two games would be we'd get high quality games every month which has been broken many times
I think I’ll (game) pass. Will keep my game pass ultimate and buying exclusives on pS. This until Sony acts as it was always entitled to do less or price more than Microsoft.
@SeanOhOgain
Me too, I remember buying a VITA because I just had so many games got it that it was silly not to own one. Also good getting PS3 games.
On the plus side, I didn’t expect that they’d give larger PS5 games so soon. I remember when I got PS4 we’d get the likes of Resogun and Contrast…
But, definitely they said two games, so I’m happy enough to be getting three given my PS3 is mothballed anyway (shame about VITA though, I still play it on occasion).
The thing about playing old nostalgic games is you get the old graphics, control schemes and now subpar game mechanics with them. So I'll stick with the essential until my sub runs out next year, I actually utilise EA Pass more these days so will probably keep that one going.
You know what, I'd be interested in the streaming of the PS2, 3, and PSP title on it's own for the extra $20. I generally hate gaming subscription services like that, but maybe, maybe that one will be okay.
Since I have a PS3, PS4, PS5 and a PS Vita, I'll just be sticking with the 'Essential' tier for now. Anything I really want I can just buy when it's on sale or used. I will, however, be VERY curious to see if the older PS1, PS2 and PSP games end up getting trophy support. If so, and depending on the titles, I may be up for that as I'm a pretty serious trophy hunter. But we shall see......
Sony left 12 month Now subscriptions up on my local PSN store. Those translate to Premium Plus subs from June onward. Bought five full years worth, because it works out to 5 Euro per month. Pretty happy with that, all things considered.
I will probably go with premium but, I want to see the catalog for PS 1 and 2 games first. I can't help but wonder of some of my favorite PS one games like the Spyro and Crash games won't be on the service due to MS owning the rights to them now.
Also right now where I am at the internet is not good enough for streaming games.
"I pay 30 a month for game pass ultimate so it works out £130 this from Sony is £100 so 30 cheaper"
£30 a month?
Nope. Just typical ps plus and buying games.
Screw them services.
I won't be upgrading to the newer tiers anytime soon, need to see exactly what will be available selection and feature wise.
As soon as everything is revealed, then I will be making a decision.
It all depends on what games they are adding to the higher tiers and how often new games will be added.
The list for the middle tier looks good, but i already have all those games named. A promise from sony that at least 1-2 good games per month will be added to it, will make me subscribe to it.
@Katep
“30”what a month?
Game pass Ultimate is £11.99 a month, or free (10 minutes a day “work”) if you do reward points 🤔
@Spoonman-2 Sorry I meant £30 for 3 months so for a year 12 months if you pay works out at 130
Its a bit rubbish that to get retro games you need the top tier, I really dont see myself paying that much. I cant remember the last time I really played a PS Plus game, I really just pay the basic amount, usually when its on sale, to play online. I'm not a fan of these games subscription service and though I play the Switch a lot, I've not subscribed there at all.
I'll need to see the PS1 and PS2 offerings before I decide, but it's promising thus far.
It’s great to have choices. I am more likely to shell out for PC Game Pass than upgrade my PS+ to a higher tier. It will really depend though on what kinds of games regularly show on PS+. I have been delighted by what is constantly showing up on Gamepass. I had it over the holiday break and played The Gunk, Unpacking, The Wild at Heart, Forza, Psychonauts, Halo, Age of Empires, and more… it was awesome. If Sony wants to deliver a similar experience than I am all in.
Barely have time to play the games I already own. Can see myself getting a month of premium if I find myself with an extended chunk of time off.
The new model is fine.
All depends on what games they add, and how frequently
So basically, the game's graphics get worse and worse the more you pay, and there is less content in each game (I recall some nes games can be finished from start to end in less than an hour). Might as well include a Super Premium tier with Atari games in it (not remastered, because of reasons).
I honestly don't care about any of these new things. I don't like game pass and i don't like this.
Thankfully, i can just ignore it.
I don't care about game streaming because my wisp has some giant ping spikes constantly, maybe if the "400 PlayStation games catalog" has some games i really wan to play I'll be checking the PS+ Extra a couple months to play some of those games.
Playing some old games (with enhancements maybe?) is probably what sounds more appealing to me right now, but there's no way I'll pay $120 just for that.
