The surprising revelation that Jim Ryan will retire as Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO at the end of March 2024 has been, perhaps predictably, met with glee from most corners of the wider video game world. In addition to courting controversy on a number of occasions, the British executive’s tenure has largely been marred by a change in corporate goals: an emphasis on games as a service which has yet to really bear fruit, a lack of engagement with enthusiasts, and a blank slate of upcoming first-party releases.
Of course, Ryan alone will not be responsible for the entire division’s direction, and it’s unlikely that a new CEO will walk in and rip up all of the progress that’s been made under the current management’s stewardship. As such, we’d recommend you don’t expect a sudden shift away from live service software, PC ports, and even smartphone titles, which is another area the organisation has been investing in. Sony Group’s COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki will take charge on a temporary basis, and is likely to offer a steady hand while the firm searches for a full-time successor.
This means it’s likely to be business as usual moving forwards, and there’s no real reason to assume PlayStation will be any different despite the departure of Ryan. It’s perhaps important at this point to underline just how effective the outgoing executive’s management has been: he’s helped PS5 outpace sales of the PS4 despite unprecedented stock shortages caused by the pandemic, and he also launched an entire console platform during a global lockdown. His wider tenure shouldn’t be ignored either: his early experiences running PlayStation Europe helped make Sony the market leader on the continent.
It's clear, whatever your opinion of the person, that Ryan is an extremely capable businessman. But, while interviews with the executive are limited, he’s talked in the past about his gruelling schedule, which involved spending two weeks in North America, one week in Japan, and one week in his home country of the UK each month. Now approaching his mid-60s, it’s evident from Ryan’s outgoing speech that he simply wants to spend more time with his family. This is understandable.

Ryan’s period in the top seat, among hardcore fans at least, will be marred by his uncharismatic interviews and his seeming disdain for the enthusiasts who set the mood for the discourse around the division as a whole. But he leaves the business in a strong position, with record hardware sales, steady subscriber numbers, and a strong slate of first-party studios. We hope that his replacement is a little more open with customers in a way that Ryan wasn’t, but anyone stepping into the role is going to have a tough time matching the executive’s pure business achievements.
How would you like Jim Ryan’s replacement to approach the role, and who do you think is the best person responsible for the job? Apply for the position in the comments section below.

He wasn’t charismatic, or a good spokesman, but we didn’t need him to be. He was a good businessman, which is not the same thing, and was at PlayStation since the start. He led PlayStation in Europe and worldwide to some of their most successful times. I can’t believe how many clueless armchair fans are saying Jim was clueless. Get some perspective.
@themightyant I mean hes pushing for 10 GaaS. A business where the bubble already bursted. Not sure if this is the decision of a good business man haha
Hopefully whoever it is shakes up their marketing department. Having no 1st party and 2nd party roadmap is getting old. And watching them launch PSVR2 and reveal its launch titles via the blog felt like a bad joke. SIE went from reveals 6 years prior to release to now saying basically nothing. I would love to see a middle ground approach with the new leadership.
@MagisterMagi Worse, 10 GAAS before a certain year. My maths and memory may be rusty, but I think those targets would have needed Sony to release 2-3 GAAS games a year?!
Playstation thrived after the pandemic, and has pumped out some great first party games. But a non-generic-white-guy suit CEO could bring a spark back to the platform.
Lord knows if it was due to Jim Ryan, but Sony's weird radio silence still baffles me. I can only think of two reasons:
1. Sony don't want to announce stuff too early, so we'll get SOPs in say March and Sept each year starting in 2024 that only cover the next 6 months
2. They're withholding loads of stuff for a sort of '2nd console launch' announcement extravaganza when the PS5 Slim and/or Pro release.
@Howson79 To be fair, I'm not sure I want announcements for stuff 6 years out, either. Still, it'd be nice to have at least a vague idea of what's coming out in 24/25.
@thetraditional exactly. Games are there and even though it may sound funny - PS brand as a whole needs more hype and more community pleasing basically...
@MagisterMagi It’s possible to not like some of his policies, or the direction he was heading, but still respect he was a good businessman.
As for GaaS and monetisation everyone always ASSUMES these will be the worst form of it without realising many of the mostly single player games they love had MTX and were GaaS E.g. the Last of Us, Uncharted 4, AC: Valhalla etc.
On top of that almost all the most successful games are GaaS. It’s understandable Sony, or anyone else, wants a piece of that pie to stay relevant and compete with Microsoft.
They only need one or two of these to be successful for it to be a net win for them, which would give them more money to feed back into the single player games we love. THAT is smart business, and why he got paid the big bucks. Lead with your head not your heart
@Howson79 isn t that a part of marketing department job? Or PR? I know they answer to CEO but still... who knows how it works within the company...
@Powerplay94 Even to cover the (presumably major) financial losses on 8 failures? I'm genuinely not sure about this logic. Especially as: a) GAAS seem to be incredibly fickle and I already see people calling them a 'fad'.
b) Sony have Bungie and Destiny. Let Destiny work their GAAS magic for those that want it. Maybe release a couple of GAAS MP games for franchises that it'd work for and leave it at that.
Does anyone honestly think 'MT-ridden quirky heist simulator/massive map Sci-Fi FPS #24' is going to grab peoples attention?
@themightyant as a gamer, i couldnt care less about the business side of things , i dont have a "armchair" at their table or their profits in my pocket, lol. jim ryan was bad and its time for a celebration!
@themightyant You wont find any sense of reality in these pages.
People are sheep and merely spew out the narrative they have been fed - and this site has made strong contributions to that skewed narrative.
On any objective business analysis, Jim's tenure has been a huge success, leading first PS4 and then PS5 to be a leaders in the field and establishing Sony's current dominant position.
I couldn't have less respect for the parrots of this site, with no idea at all about what they speak of, who will simply crow and state 'good riddance'. They are the sheeple that will watch the world burn..
@themightyant For sure. I play Europa Universalis 4 for God's sake. The game that's received god knows how much DLC. I buy it (on 50% sale) because it's a fun game and each DLC gives me at least 20+ hours of play.
The issue is, even as a massive strategy game nerd, I am never going to also throw money at a game that's selling point is: 'A bit like EU4'.
@Titntin I agree. The PS5 is selling like hot cakes, so the guy's doing something right. All these 'Sony need to make me specifically happy and excited or the entire company will fail' think pieces are ridiculous. That being said:
1. Sony 's radio silence on non-LS stuff is bizarre
2. I'm not sure release so many LS games over a relatively short period of time is a good idea.
Emulation of past consoles on latest console, j want to put me PS1/2/3/4 disc in and it'll play and save on modem hardware.
I really don’t know what the scope of power is for such a position. If possible, I’d like the new guy or girl to do the following, but I doubt it’s all up to them:
Roll back de facto censorship requirements
More respect for Japanese output and devs
Much better community engagement and communication
Greater investment in first party development of VR content
Mobile games that are connected to PSN and which have trophy campaigns
I realise the majority of that most people don’t care or think about, but if the new person can improve any of those aspects whilst keeping Sony profitable enough to compete against the financial juggernaut trying to monopolise the industry, then I’m happy enough.
@nomither6 I get not caring about the business side of things as a gamer. But if they don't stay strong and relevant as a business they will be the next Sega, or worse, Blockbuster. Would you want a Microsoft only gaming future? Even if I disagree with some of PlayStation's policies under Jim Ryan I want their business to be strong so that we keep getting the games we want and the industry has the competition it NEEDS and Jim has done that.
@Fyz306903 I agree Sony's silence on Single player is bizarre. I never said I support all Jim Ryan's policies or general direction, I don't, but as @Tintin correctly said "On any objective business analysis, Jim's tenure has been a huge success". Completely agree.
Good luck to whoever takes over and tries to please the "hardcore community" while trying to keep the company growing (One thing goes completely against the other, by the way).
Eric Lempel (current head global marketing, sales and business operations – used to be the PS Plus guy back in the PS3 days) is probably the person they'll chose to take the role. I don't know if he will be very popular with the hardcore audience since he doesn't wear gamer shirts out there.
Sony's silence regarding its games is very clear, they are simply not ready to be revealed. Even Naughty Dog has already stated that announcing a game 3 or 4 years in advance is not a good thing for the studio developing it. The problem is that Sony doesn't have enough studios to be able to announce and "shortly" release games on a regular basis. Unless they buy a good number of studios (or publishers), we will continue to have years in which they announce and release many games, and others in which they will practically do nothing.
Happy retirement Jim…… I wonder if he’s going to helm 1 more showcase before he goes and we get to see everything the teams have been working on, that would be a great drop mic moment
@themightyant playstation sells itself. jim ryan wasnt needed for the ps5's success at all and he wasn't the reason the ps4 was so successful either, hes actually the reason it started losing momentum toward the end when he became CEO
On a business level you can't argue with his success. The numbers don't lie and he's put PlayStation in a position of dominance I've not seen since the PS2 era.
On a personal level, I can't help but feel that by doing so he's turned his back on what made some of the earlier PS games so great. He's made PS more Americanised, with a commercial focus and less of the quirkiness I used to associate with PlayStation.
I'm not sad to see him go but I doubt that his leaving will signal a shift in Sony's direction which is what I ultimately want to see.
As usual so many clueless folks keep blaming Jim Ryan for things that were well decided before his tenure even began.
Japan Studio was mismanaged under two " beloved" execs like Shawn Layden and Shu Yoshida.
Live Services game plan was discussed frequently by Layden during last generation with an expansion planned in the PS5 gen.
At the very least Jimbo orchestrated several expansion plans that should secure the future for PS:, Indies, PS Productions, gradual expansion on other platforms.
I wish him nothing but the best of luck in his future endeavours 👍.

In every metric, excluding customer engagement, its hard to argue that Jim's tenure has been anything other than a success (of course aided by direction set and relationships created by his predecessors). Anyone arguing differently misunderstands the role of a CEO for a private corporation like Sony. Across the board sales are up, profits are up, Playstation is smashing sales targets each quarter. He bought Sony additional time over the activision blizzard fiasco (which i do think will have contributed to his decision to step down - must have been exhausting), he launched PS5 successfully during a global pandemic. So from a purely business standpoint, Jim has been a wild success. You dont go 30 years in a company and work your way to the top without being successful in the eyes of your peers.
With that said Playstation is on a dangerous path right now and i do fear it has lost some of its brand identity. The shift away from the Japanese market, the lack of community engagement, and this push for live service is not the Sony i recognise and i really hope that the successor can reinvigorate the brand which as at risk of losing real ground to its competitors (again though, people will dunk on Jim, but Sony does have to diversify to survive and it will rely on games that can drive sustained profit given the unwieldy price of game development these days). In particular, i'd like the new boss to spend more time speaking to consumers and less speaking to gamesindustry.biz and publishing key information on the PS blog (like VR2)
With that said, i do wish Jim well for the future and hope that his successor can not only fill his shoes but grow beyond them and exceed in all metrics that matter
@Fyz306903 The reality is that a lot of people play WoW, cod warzone or how it is called, destiny, genshin impact, FF14, GTAV online, etc. . This seems to be a huge market and produce a lot of revenue from in game purchases. "Nobody" understands why, but it seems to interest a lot of people.
Leading the article with 'Jim Ryan may have been disliked' is really poor journalism. Who do you speak for? Some vocal minority on Twitter with a grievance?
It's a well known fact that, psychologically speaking, people are many times more likely to take the time to externalise a complaint than a compliment, and websites actively promote consumer engagement with sensationalism and promotion of negativity from social media networks, and that headline is just another example of that. It's a pretty egregious example of that because overall Jim is liked far more than he is disliked.
You may as well start every article declaring the subject matter may be disliked because nothing and no one is universally, unequivocally liked.
Jim is an excellent CEO and did what was best for PlayStation. Under his management it's gone from strength to strength. He has made mistakes along the way but nothing that could outweigh the good decisions he's made. The way the headline has framed his tenure is sensationalist claptrap focussed on the opinion of a minority, aiding to further perpetuate the narrative that Jim Ryan is disliked to generate attention.
@Rob_230 Playstation never shifted away from the Japanese market, only Jpan studio was restructed as it was heavily mismanaged under previous CEO'S . Also Japan Studio was not why Playstation was succesful in Japan in the first place, it was always due to third parties.
Sony invested heavily in multiplayer in the PS3 gen, stopped in the PS4 days, but again Shawn Layden and Shuhei Yoshida reiterated several times that they would again expand into multiplayer games in the PS5 gen. None of these policies were specifically greenlit under Ryan.
Honestly, some of you should do a basic research first; a so- called playstation enthusiast website where many people don't even know what they are waffling on about most of the time.
@riceNpea This is true, even Phil Spencer gave jim his flowers on X this morning. Some will say its PR speak, but i actually think there will be some deep respect between them. Jim has been a fierce leader for sony in the face of agressive industry consolidation over the last few years
@Mad001 Playing PS1/PS2/PS3 discs on the PS5 is like a wet dream for every PlayStation collector out there, but unfortunately, from what I know, PS5 drives don't read CDs and DVDs, so may keep that hope up for the PS6, if that will even launch with a drive at all. 😄
PS3 games, though, that is a big possibility, but only if they figure out emulation on PS5 and don't have issues with 3rd party publishers because of it.
@gaston Haha, FF14 is probably my most played PS5 game, but MMOs tend to do that... It's also an excellent game.
Does anyone know if Sony gets a cut from FF14 subscription fees or cash shop purchases? My assumption was no, but I don't actually know for sure.
@Sil_Am yea emulation has come in leaps and bounds if they don't get their finger out il build an emulation PC. I'm scared of my ps3 that plays PS2 discs burning out on me. I'm always looking at new ways to preserve it but my soldering skills isn't up to much 🤦😂. Is that days gone? I love boozer he's a character and a half 🤣
@Mad001 Same, my launch model PS3 is a prized possession - and I had to get it repaired twice by Sony! I doubt it's possible now. But PS3 + PS5 is a good combo for 5 generations of PS games.
@jimbouk not probably, but they'd get sacked on the first day! PlayStation selling itself is not a thing. Ask PS3, PS Vita. Silly troll
@theMEGAniggle PS3 had Kevin Butler. 🙃
As much as I like communication with the fanbase, if I had to decide whether I want a bean counter or a likeable, relatable representative, I'd always choose the former, especially seeing how things are going on the "other side".
@blecch ?????? What on earth are you talking about
Kevin was played by an actor on PS adverts. He was not CEO and it didn't stop the PS3 from performing poorly for most of its lifecycle due to an arrogant approach from Sony that the PS3 would do well automatically off the success of the PS2
As I said in the main story, someone get on the phone to Shawn Layden, Andrew House or Jack Tretton - there's a job for you!
The PS5 is a success but it's still standing on the shoulders of the PS4. Making a backwards compatible successor to that particular juggernaut was always going to be a success - let's face it, it's not down to the case design or the overflowing raft of exclusives.
@theMEGAniggle Kevin Butler was Director of Rumor Confirmation. Or maybe VP, Blu-ray Superiority. Or possibly VP of Enough is Enough.
@blecch lovely, another troll
You must be the director of joblessness
@sanderson72 of course PS5 owes much of its success to PS4, just as PS4's success was built on the popularity of the PS3 era, which built its success on the success of the PS2, which was launched on the back of how well loved PS1 was.
You say it like it's not obvious. The entries brand is a success because for 30 years Sony has made brilliant consoles and provided beloved exclusives. Of course PS5 primarily owes its huge market share to brand awareness and some loyalty.
I believe this is not a coincidence to be announced right after the aleged hack.
The hack is probably real and they want to get ahead of the inevitable leaks.
@jimbouk
To be honest, I think you should also do some research before criticising others for well evidenced opinions.
It is quite clear that Sony moved away from some of the quirky Japanese games that gave them some of their early identity. They disrespected and made life difficult for the smaller Japanese developers; forcing them to submit everything to the US in English to get approval where they never needed to before, and refusing approval for games almost capriciously, and certainly with no explanation, which forced extreme conservatism to avoid crippling fees. Completely different standards have been shown to western devs.
https://nichegamer.com/new-sony-censorship-policy-is-forcing-even-japanese-developers-to-censor-themselves-in-japan/
Even just changing the Japanese traditional button allocations for accept and reject with a view to globalisation was a middle finger to Japanese gamers and devs:
https://www.eurogamer.net/in-a-historic-move-playstation-5-swaps-x-and-circle-button-use-in-japan
Don't like the man but his time with Sony has been a huge success for PS.
@dschons Interesting point - I appreciate the way Phil Spencer communicates to players, I like Gears/Halo/Forza/etc. and I think Game Pass is great, but I still don't own an Xbox.
I still have Satoru Iwata's Mii on my 3DS though, and I remember his Nintendo Direct presentations.
Never really got the absolute hate some folks had for Jim Ryan. Sure I've disagreed with a few of his choices and he has put his foot in his mouth a few times but overall I don't think he has been as bad as people make him out to be.
He was a businessman through and through. Nothing more nothing less.
@riceNpea No, I'm saying that a few people on here are saying how Ryan was amazing launching the PS5 as if it was a stand-alone success.
Most of its success comes from the PS4 owners 'upgrading' (I use that term sparingly) whereas the PS3/XBox360/Wii era was a lot more complicated and the PS4 had to start from scratch.
Layden, House and Tretton laid the foundations for the success of the PS4 (Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot too) and the PS5 is simply carrying on the job based on the previous SCE/SIE leads work, nothing to do with Ryan.
Sony's rollout of PS+ tiers was certainly confusing and poorly handled. Even though the bottom tier was as good as the old PS+, people seemed to feel as if they were downgraded to the "bad" tier and were not happy at having to pay more to get to the middle tier.
Hey Jim, You are the Weakest Link....Good-Bye
@Rob_230 Really well balanced post, agree with almost all of it except "The shift away from the Japanese market".
I think the reality is the Japanese market was moving away from home consoles FIRST, to handhelds (and PC's in Asia), which didn't align with Sony's direction as a console manufacturer first and foremost.
I think it would be fairer to say the Japanese market moved away from PlayStation, rather than vice versa. Sony were only reacting, quite rightly, to all the metrics they were seeing. They tried handheld, twice, and people didn't buy it enough. Meanwhile globally they were going strength to strength. Only made sense to follow the market.
But I agree I hope this is an opportunity for Sony to change a LITTLE of their direction.
@thefourfoldroot1 Wait so a DualShock 4 on a Japanese PS4 works like a Nintendo controller? That is terrifying to my PS muscle memory.
@thefourfoldroot1 Has Sony moved away from smaller AA Japnese games? Sure, but that move didn't happen overnight under Jim Ryan. Andrew House, Shawn Layden and Shu Yoshida were all pretty much responsible for the decline of the Japan Studio brand since the start of the PS3 gen, their output during that time and the PS4 lifecycle was abysmal compared to the PS1 and the PS2 gens. Ryan was not in charge of Sony then, he was head of SCEE.
Sony never gave Japan Studio a big enough budget like their western devs, under marketed their games ( Gravity Rush 2 and Puppeteer are prime examples of this).
The censorship also happened under previous mangement, not under Ryan. Hell, Ryan even greenlit the PS indies initiative which made it possibles for indie devs all over the world to submit and certify their games hassle-free without the regional restrictions in the past.
Also keep in mind that PS5 launched in Japan at the same time as everywhere else, unlike the PS4 which launched 3 months later after its worldwide release.
Well said, a legend in the SIE business arm and that should be respected. Jack Tretton and Shawn Laydens style of communication was missed for sure though, so perhaps a healthy balance of the two for his successor.
I've seen people compare him to president Shinra it's kinda funny 😁
@jimbouk
I know (or rather I presumed he wasn’t responsible or fully responsible). I wasn’t contradicting that, just the idea that
“Playstation never shifted away from the Japanese market, only Jpan studio was restructed”
They clearly have shifted, almost with embarrassment, away from the Japanese market.
@blecch
Yes, it has always been that way in Japan and the opposite in the EU, US, etc. Sony, recklessly, destroyed decades of accumulated muscle memory in their Japanese market just because, lol
@MagisterMagi I feel the same. Sure, GaaS is good money but at what cost?
I'm not anti-GaaS but the focus should not be on it. It should always be on how to optimize the console game experience that is a little difficult to experience on other platforms like mobile devices and PC. (People can argue that there's nothing that PC can't do, but console has the advantage of standardized specs)
Only seems succesful because of what Andrew and Shawn built up with the ps4. Glad he is gone. Good riddance.
@sanderson72 ah, right, I understand
A lot of people might end up missing him I think if the right person isnt put in place of him. I didnt think he was a very personable CEO, but I suppose its not his job to be, its only an added bonus. He's said some utterly baffling things over the years, but he's been more often good for the brand than not.
I hope Cerney gets the job, he's got the knowledge, experience, is a gamer, and is pretty much well liked by everyone.
@puddinggirl Yeah 10 projects are just way too many. And over 50% of the Budget. This will end in countless Studios getting shut down
@PaperAlien Cerney has its own company. Hes only contracted to PlayStation
I hope Sony leans into their Japanese heritage more.
@nomither6 Agreed. I'm bewildered by people defending him. "Well, he did make the fat shareholders even fatter, so he was a good boss". Jesus wept.
Ryan was not a patch on Ken, Kaz or Shaun in terms of being engaging and communicating clearly. He's never struck me as a gamer, just a businessman who doesn't mind the market he's found himself in. There's passion for profit over passion for product.
I wouldn't say he's a caretaker president because he pushed the brand forward, just maybe not in the most friendly and engaging ways. So here's hoping whomever replaces him brings back some of that more personal feel.
@blecch @thefourfoldroot1 If I remember correctly they've unified the inverted X O situation with the rest of the world while rolling out the PS5. But yeah, until then it O to confim and X to go back.
"which involved spending two weeks in North America, one week in Japan, and one week in his home country of the UK each month".In which interview did he say this?
I would enjoy jack tretton or shawn layden back.but thats a sweet dreams.hopefully the next boss is n.i.c.e.word up son
@Texan_Survivor Clearly some of you have been overdosing on the Phil Spencer kool-aid ,good lord. Who actually cares if a company's CEO is a certified "GAMER"or not. His job was never to pander to gamers to twitter, wear gamer t-shirts and all that nonsense but just to run a company efficiently which is what he's been doing all these years.
This obsession with Corpo Execs to be everyone's "friend" is just so bizzare.
It's not possible to say if his tenure was good or bad.
Primarily because he was CEO for only 4 years which is kinda short.
And mainly. He took over ship with set course. All games that carried PlayStation at the start of this gen was already in development before he become head of PlayStation. Even Insomniac buyout wasn't his decision.
His decisions were around studio buyouts from 2020 forward and whole pivot towards GAAS. Will it be successful? Only time will tell. End of current gen will be proper time to say if his tenure was good or bad.
Best of luck to him going forward. PS is doing gangbusters and, whatever the enthusiast/hardcore audience may have thought of him, he's clearly steered the ship well. While he can't hold a controller, he can certainly lead a party of more capable adventurers. The bard who leads from the centre, perhaps. (I've dove deep into BG3, can you tell?)
@thefourfoldroot1 personally I wish they would switch the two buttons on the Nintendo Switch, Asia be damned!
(Only slightly kidding)
More seriously I can understand, it's maddening to have muscle memory broken and buttons switched like that, I have it EVERY time I pick up my Switch and go back in a menu instead of forwards. 😡
(Will SOMEONE think of the Westerners)
And while we're at it... either Xbox or Nintendo need to switch their labelling around AB ≠ BA & XY ≠ YX.
Shots fired! theMightyRANT out
@Titntin Can you sound a little bit more obnoxious please? 🙄 We know if Phil Spencer announced his retirement today your comments would look exactly like the sheep your talking about, probably even worse filled with all types of curse words
@Tecinthebrain
Then you know absolutely nothing. Who do you think you are speaking for when you say 'we know' followed by proving you actually don't know?
I don't like any slimey CEO types, that's true. But Phil, just like Jim, has done a good job for his corp and when the day comes that he retires I will also give him the respect he deserves for doing his job relatively well. I don't have to like people to respect that they did their job well.
Only people in here sounding obnoxious are people making assumptions about people they have no knowledge of. You want to see obnoxious? Look in a mirror.
@themightyant So much this! My muscle memory breaks every time I play a switch game for any length of time. Every time I play on xbox and it tells me to press X I keep hitting the A button too!
I've no issue with the companies having their own layouts, I just wish they all used different symbols
@riceNpea Just read your post #29 and wanted to compliment you on a well written and reasoned post I 100% agree with.
I do appreciate non reactionary and well reasoned posts like yours, its why I engage with the site, thank you.
@themightyant IMO: he gambled a successful track record in favor of a fleeting trend by investing so much on GAAS. The year ahead looks barren outside Spider-Man, because of this GAAS pursuit.
Almost reminds me of Don Mattrick. Let’s not forget either than under Mattrick Xbox saw some of its biggest success by pursuing the short lived Kinect pursuit. He sold Bungie to themselves and disrupted operations for nearly a decade with that pursuit, something Xbox is still recovering from, but hey, he was also a great business man and made XBox a ton of money during his tenure!
Sony has becoming more anti consumer and anti gamer under his watch. From charging for PS4 to PS5 upgrades, to jacking PS Plus prices through the roof, to chasing the GAAS fad, to many other things, they’re showing their arrogance again. Hopefully whoever replaces him is more consumer facing, humble, and an actual gamer, which I don’t think Ryan is.
Shrewd business man no doubt, but the walls were starting to cave in on his "savviness". Most of, if not all of the big exclusives that we love were green lit under Shawn Layden, he was there to simply carry the baton to the finish line on masterpieces.
Jimbo's hands were all over the dramatic price increases, failed PC port mission, heavy focus on "Live Service" 5 years too late, and the worst, most egregious thing he did: heavily cut down the amount of exclusives released per year.
All of the bad stuff they were doing was always met with "don't worry the console game pipeline won't be impacted", and of course, after a strong PS5 launch, it was impacted and cut to down to ONE PS5 exclusive per year. Never disrespect your console base and I believe Jim Ryan did that.
@Tharsman Did he really "gambled a successful track record in favor of a fleeting trend by investing so much on GAAS?". I'm not so sure as far as we know all those studios that make AAA single played first party games are still making them. They just aren't announcing yet. The GaaS is additive, other than TLOU: Factions, are from newly acquired studios.
I think the GaaS takeover is completely overblown. In part they handled these announcements appallingly. The GaaS State of Play was a disaster. But we aren't getting 10 Destiny/Fortnite etc's.
"The year ahead looks barren outside Spider-Man, because of this GAAS pursuit." Currently YES, but they are keeping their cards close to their chest and have already said they wanted to reduce the time from announce to launch. I don't think the next year WILL be barren, even if it LOOKS like it now. But perhaps i'm wrong and COVID delays have finally caught up with them.
@Titntin kind of you to say so, thanks.
@Tharsman Sony released a brand new gaming platform in 2023; PSVR2. That alone is evidence of hundreds of millions of pounds worth of r&d but people conveniently forget it.
And in a way I can understand why. Sony has a long history of releasing many 1st party exclusives of the highest quality every year, unlike MS (who need to buy their way out of 15 years of willful neglect) and to a lesser extent Nintendo, so when there's a year where Sony may only have a couple of titles to launch it gives the impression that they are resting on their laurels. And to counter that I point to PSVR2, the best VR unit ever made.
It's like stockholm syndrome to see those defending Ryan's legacy as if the fact that a few banger games that came out during the PS4 generation were his doing. Which they weren't. Or that mere sales and shareholder dividends are a measure of success for the gamer side of the medium and thus worthy of praise.
Yet even if you believe that aspect, one can't ignore the trajectory PS has gone. The hyper-consolidation of their now safe iterative portfolio that has quickened in pace and stifled diversity coupled with the complete lack of fan service and communication has led to the lowest fan perception of the platform and leadership ever.
That is Jim Ryan's legacy at the helm. One where greed dictated and likely will continue to dictate the decisions the brand makes for the foreseeable future. I sure hope not because Sony has grown complacent, and the hubris dictated by hardware sales has led to a ghosting of the fans that has really hurt their rep.
A breath of fresh air is needed, alongside a new direction of software diversity that isn't based on live service predation. It would be nice to have a leader at the helm that actually enjoys gaming...
People hating Xbox for doing business but loving this guy because he was good at doing business.
Double standards.
This guy was the face of some awful decisions of Sony Playstation for gamers: Only AAA games, closure of creative studios with fresh creativity and developers leaving, moving of the headquarters of SIE to the US, loss of the homeland Japan to Nintendo, neglecting indie developers, neglecting legacy games and gamers, investing in GaaS live service games, raising all prices, bad PR overall, …
@riceNpea its a (kinda) a brand new platform (more of an extension, like Kinect was) but how many of their studios were bound by it? Unless all studios outside of Insomniac were making VR games, that is separate from the topic of game development (the part I, as a customer, care the most about.)
@themightyant I would had assumed covid delays were the reason 2020 titles didn't ship until 2021 (GoW, Horizon and GT.)
But we will see indeed. The reveal-to-announcement is something I looked at their history, and they seem to have 2 tier of games, following two different paths. Their B tier (stand-alone-dlc like Miles Moraes or family games like Ratchet) would in average be revealed 9 months before launch, but the A tier (Spider-Man, GoW, etc) were all over the place, with some revealed 3 years before launch. Their shortest A game release cycle might have been HFW with 1.7s years, and I assume they were expecting a 1 year cycle but got delayed.
But at this point, I would take it if they simply started porting/enhancing their whole PS3 game lineup. Meh... who am I kidding, even if Sony were doing their best I would still kill for a Infamous 4-game remakester.
@Tharsman Of course it delayed those games in 2020/21 etc. that were relatively close to releasing. But at that point staff are already heads down, everyone knows what you have to do, and they just have to execute. That’s easier to do remotely.
However the ones that would have been most affected were those just starting out development that didn’t have that direction yet. At some point I think there will be a gap where the delays were most impactful. Though I had assumed it was THIS year for Sony.
Reality is that COVID will continue to have had an impact on releases for years to come. Just look at Bethesda’s proposed schedule that was leaked and how 3 years on it’s already 2-3 years out of date
He benefited off everything that was built up before he took charge, and he was about to make it all come crashing down if they kept him around much longer. It's a good thing we got rid of this guy, he was never anything great.
@get2sammyb An article idea I've thought of that could be interesting is looking over potential candidates for the job. There's the obvious ones like Yoshida and Herman Hulst but could throw in some fun ones just to get the discussion going.
“a lack of engagement with enthusiasts”
He obviously did a good job overall but if he and Sony under his leadership had more comms with the community I’m sure he’d have been more liked.
At least he didn’t pretend to be everyone’s friend like Spencer.
People give this guy credit for things he didn’t even do. PS5 was going to be a success based on the PS4 and he had nothing to do with any of the games released. Those were already in the works.
@Shad361 Exactly. Funny how many fluff pieces are being written about him now that he has been booted. Playstation was successful in spite of him, not because of him.
The console was likely to succeed due to the marketing, the interest in the product already, the games offered in the first 3 years was much better and were sequels to PS4 games that were hits so not surprised. Most were PS3 with few of the notable in 2013-2015 on PS4 so most are more 2016+ releases that people remember/care about on PS4 and sequels to those games on PS5 was not surprising.
We don't see as much PS Experience or other signs, very businesslike but less communication to fans. Some can do it some can't and it's fair enough I guess. Whatever signs of caring, whatever transparency they can give is nice sometimes.
2016+ was the change up for PlayStation management too and games were underway from PS3 being ended to focus on PS4 for a few years (and IPs moved on so Killzone to Horizon, Infamous to Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush on Vita to 2 on PS4, probably other examples but not many to list I think Uncharted 4/Last of Us 2 were there, Insomniac always had Sunset Ovedrive/Fuse then Spiderman and Ratchet is always there, Bend with Golden Abyss to Days Gone and if a Vita project was cancelled/Days Gone was always planned so they had a PS4 title but more time to focus on it no idea).
Vita had it's Japan third parties and western Indies support and cult following audience hanging in there till the Vita production of consoles and carts ended in 2019 or so, story postponement is still ongoing then ended.
Xbox will get their 2016+ PS4 games that had impact on the platform moment 'eventually' but we will wait and see...... it may take a while.
The movies/tv shows (Ratchet movie 2016, PS Productions later and Last of Us/Twisted Metal happened, Horizon and more soon),
the price change may likely stay I assume,
GAAS plans continuing or not,
mostly big games (less small/PSN titles),
PS Portal and more could all change.
What we see/what plans were already in place is hard to know with the rest of Jim Ryan leading up to the 2024 retirement and whatever in place of the new person of that role keeping it consistent (having to anyway) or whatever we see change/reduced/revoked (not sure what word to say there).
@Friendly I agree there are some double standards between Sony doing business and Xbox doing business. But there is ONE crucial difference. Xbox / Phil Spencer, who I like generally, is trying to pretend he is everyone's best friend and says things like they aren't trying to take games away from gamers... and then they do. They can't have it BOTH ways, yet they want to have their cake and eat it too. With Sony at least you know what you are getting.
TLDR: they are both cold blooded businesses the difference is with Sony they show that, with Microsoft they are like the smiling knife
@themightyant well, you know:
‘Sony believes in generations’ and then Sony continues to release most games of the last 3 years also on Playstation 4.
‘These games are only possible through the power of Playstation’ and then most of these games get ported to PC.
Which is why he’s called Lying Jim Ryan.
They’re both just businessmen.
I just miss the Playstation from late PS3 and early PS4, where they at least pretended to love Gaming and celebrate the brand.
Other than that, I appreciate the hard work Jim Ryan put in to keep my favorite gaming company going.
@themightyant They act like he burned PS down with the way they are complaining about him lol. Phil is everything they wished Jim Ryan was but the only thing saving Phil's ass is Microsoft's checkbook. He has failed miserably at xbox, but its ok, because he's a cool dude apparently. And no, I don't care for either because I'm not a weirdo who cares about company CEO's like that. One has given me games, the other hasn't. Simple as that.
He certainly will...... Jack Trenton and Shuhei Yoshida sized big boots that he never quite filled.
No doubt he's done much behind the scenes, but he should have never been CEO.
The ugly deformed looking monstrosity PS5 was launched while JR was ceo. Also dropping the web browser, a ui downgrade from the PS4, no themes and folders, and not being able to store PS5 games externally. To be fair I don't know how much say JR may have had with all that but it was while he was ceo.
After 30 years and a good pension why not retire and leave the grind behind.
@themightyant the Jim Ryan circle jerk is soo crazy right now. If I remember Shawn Layden, was and still is (IMO) one of the best heads of the gaming arm of SONY. He actually LOVED gaming. and wasnt Jim an XBOX operative? Like this is the most craziest time line in gaming I have ever seen in my life time!!
i dont think he "retired" I truly believe he was forced to retire....
@Titntin if you believe a console selling "like hotcakes" 3 years out and no definite stacked library of games, as successful well i dunno. People also brought hula hoops, and rollerblades and they were selling like "hotcakes". It proves to me that people are desperate and yearning for something, anything to placate their gaming hunger.
Its almost a travesty that the system, didnt have a definite line up when it was set to release. All we got was "DEMON SOULS" remake and some other game which thousands of players already played on old hardware (yawn).
The short attention span of most gamers will cause them to throw away their ps5s when the ps6 drops and SONY knows this and will milk the community again, at the same time not giving them anything but scraps as far as software...
This is almost like a dark comedy playing out..
@MakersMark
I have no conception of what you are even trying to communicate here? At what point was anyone interested in how you personally felt about games?
I pointed out that a corp measures success of a ceo by roll out numbers and income, and on that basis Ryan was an objective success.
Im sorry youve obviously lost your love of games, but Im pushing 60 and feel this is the best generation of gaming in a lifetime Ive dedicated to the hobby. Ive never had so many great games in my backlog that I havent been able to get to yet, despite spending more time playing now than I ever have.
But a corp wont measure the success of a ceo based on what a couple of customers 'feel'. Its pure hard buisness numbers that determine success or failure for them.
Even if there were no games from sony, if the machines rolling out at the fastest rate a playstation ever has, then thats a buisness sucess.
If you genuinely have lost you enthusiasm for games on PS, then sell it and get a switch, there are great titles there too. Id suggest an xbox, but 95%or more of all titles are on ps AND xbox., so that wouldnt help. If you are still not feeling it, then accept you may need a new hobby.
Much as I sympathise, you falling out of love with gaming does not invalidate those of us who've loved the games we've played this year. Elden Ring, Zelda Tears, Howarts, FF16, soon Spiderman2, SF6, MK1, its difficult to remember a year as packed with amazing titles as we have had this year.
He Brought Sony back into the world of Complacency and Arrogance we saw at the beginning on the PS3 era. I don't care how much money he made the company, I don't like supporting a company that cares more about shareholders than the players.
A Playstationboss that doesn't give us a Bloodborne II has failed, hopefully next boss give us the sequel we deserve.
If you can stick it out +25 years in a company & even get to lead the PS division, you're doing something good.
At the same time, you got to applaud the customers too. Price hikes in games & consoles, fans, are still there. Releasing expensive hardware like the PSVR2 is maybe a bit less what they expected but in the current climate, still remarkable. Portal also seems going to be a success, even with Sony choosing their proprietary PS Link wireless standard. I used to buy every piece of hardware they were releasing, but life threw a few challenges at me, so that has changed a bit.
As a brand, PlayStation seems almost too big to fail, and I always look forward to some new exciting SP experience they bring us.
The only "bad" thing that could happen to PlayStation, is losing some market share. Same thing actually applies for the Apple brand, and their investments towards gaming.
I do wonder if someone we already know is going to replace Jim Ryan? Like him or not, big shoes to fill for sure!
@Fyz306903 1. Similar tactics works for Apple very well.
@Hyena_socks It's very likely the next CEO will be European or American
Hardcore fans on here may be unhappy but Playstation is in an exceptional place right now. It is one of the worlds most resonanant and know brands in the world. If you think of gaming you think of Playstation first. The PS5 and the culture around it has gone to the next level. I think Eric Lempel has done just fine in his tenture in the Marketing top job. JR also did his bit for sales and performance.
@Oz_Momotaro I'm simply not someone who only relies on first party games and never have been. BUT:
PS exclusive titles I've played and enjoyed the hell out of:
Astros playroom
Demons souls
Mile Morales (though swinging can make me feel ill!)
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Returnal (even though I'm not past the 3rd boss after 97 hours trying)
Gran Turismo 7
Final fantasy remake
Final Fantasy 16
Death Standing Directors Cut
Ghost of Tushima (I played on ps5 @60hz)
Horizon Forbiden West.
Currently looking forward to Spiderman 2 and also the second FF7 remake game as exclusives.
..and probably a bunch I cant remember, but I've finished and enjoyed every single one of those titles on PS5 and couldn't have played them elsewhere.
I also play all my 3rd parties on the system as I prefer the pad and the menu etc, but I do have a Series X and also a very high end PC (i9 900k, 3090, 32meg ram etc), and a Switch and I have game pass ultimate and PS plus premium (I always subbed even when it PSnow).
I think just the games I've listed is more than enough exclusives when I add to them the amazing 3rd party titles I've also enjoyed on the system. You of course are welcome to not like what you've played or seen, but I'm certainly not deluded by the list of games I've enjoyed.
Do you expect an exclusive every month? Or are you simply annoyed because we've not not been let into their plans for next year yet? Either way, your welcome to your own thoughts on it and I'm very gemmed up on what I'm getting and what is exclusive or not.
I can see why sales are through the roof and this gen will be the largest in PS history - its clear most gamers who want to buy a system see what I see and vote with their wallet.
Incidentally, I was born in 64, games didnt happen till I was in my late teens (space invaders). I watched this industry from the early days when I had to import my own stuff direct from Japan and then worked as a AAA games dev for 20 years, I've made games for all the main players, no favourites, they are all ex-employers
I almost feel sorry for people who discount all the great stuff already served and continue to act like we are not having the best of gens, but its clear they are a very small minority.
@Oz_Momotaro
"Why do you keep telling people how they should feel?"
What are you talking about? I've told you how I feel and specifically stated you can feel how you like:
"You of course are welcome to not like what you've played or seen" and "Either way, your welcome to your own thoughts on it"
There is no point in trying to have a rational conversation with you if you are unable to comprehend English and simply make up stuff which has not been said, so at this point ignore the questions asking for your thoughts, I'm no longer interested and will disengage from a pointless conversation.
I'm sorry you feel like you do, but I refuse to have a hissy fit over not being privy to their plans for next year.
Have a nice day anyway.
