That’s pretty much the end of not-E3 week, folks – well, unless something unexpected happens over the next few days. Nintendo capped things off with its annual summer Nintendo Direct earlier today, bringing a mixture of third-party and first-party reveals.
While we’ll refer you to our friends at Nintendo Life for all of the major Switch 2-based headlines, we’ve summed up all of the PS5 adjacent reveals below. There was some big stuff from Square Enix in particular, so let’s dig into it all.

Superb direct, especially as a JRPG enthusiast as it was jam packed with new JRPG's even some that are not coming to PS5. Best of the four shows in my opinion.
@UltimateOtaku91 Agreed. My weeaboo heart is overflowing with joy
Finished that Direct feeling disappointed. Final Fantasy Resonance is the only game I added to my wishlist from it. Port city for old JRPGs. Seriously, where’s Mario on his 40th anniversary?
That said, now that the dust has cleared, I think Fire Emblem is the game that has my wallet’s vote this September across the platforms.
I really liked the look of that One Piece game during the Nintendo Direct (sadly not coming to PS5, although they might port it later).
Fire Emblem and Rhythm Heaven delivered for me. Thought Kingdom Hearts 4 looked very rough sadly.
@somnambulance I believe Mario had its 40th last year. Not sure if Ninty did anything but this year is Zelda's 40th.
@somnambulance I agree and disagree. Nothing that blew my mind. But there were a lot of 3rd-party games I've been wanting on Switch, Xenoblade looked awesome, I appreciated the updates on FE and RHG, and I'm optimistic Sports Resort will end up a lot better than its predecessor.
If their one more thing wasn't an Ocarina remake (cool, but not that cool), I probably would've wholeheartedly loved it.
@somnambulance Port city for old JRPGs
Dragon Quest Monsters Withered World
Xenoblade Chronicles Genesis
Atelier Katria
Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave
Final Fantasy Resonance
Kingdom Hearts 4
Dragons Dogma 2 DLC
These are new JRPG's.
Agree about Fire Emblem being the game for September though, that and Trails in the Sky Remake 2 that is.
I thought it was a pretty good direct all things considered.
Definitely excited for Splatoon Raiders to release next month.
I was disappointed they didn’t show ocarina gameplay seeing as it’s coming out this year.
Xenoblade looked good and while I respect there’s some big announcements in there for some, it was a bit lacking for my tastes. I just don’t seem to gel with Nintendo like I used to when miyamoto was still in charge of development.
As much as I like JRPGs, this one wasn't for me. I am for sure looking forward to Muramasa, but Atelier, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade aren't really my jam (though I used to like all of these franchises - Atelier Iris 1/2, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Xenogears/-saga were great - it's just the modern ones I don't like). Resonance is going to have to prove it. Flipping assets from a gacha and piecing it together into a single player game is one hell of a good cost-saving business decision, but it still needs to be a good game - I'll be watching out for that one for sure.
Sounds like it was a good way to cap the show season though - it seems like just about everyone is looking forward to something, and that's enough to get excited about. Gaming is back.
As a Japanese games enthusiast and someone who exclusively plays on PS5, it really sucks that the State of Play had like zero announcements for me all while the Direct had everything.
I used to love hating Nintendo but now I guess I hate loving it 😂
@skinnybass PS5 and Switch 2 get along great! Join @UltimateOtaku91 and me in embracing console bigamy
@UltimateOtaku91 @RoomWithaMoose @Eadgar it’s an ongoing “celebration” from September through this year, but I mean is Mario Tennis the big game for the celebration? It feels off. Zelda’s at least getting an OOT remake, which I’m ok with, but also conflicted since the “biggest” games this year on Switch 2 are two N64 remakes. I’m down for them both, but it just feels sort of safe for what is usually the weirdest platform in gaming. Also, there wasn’t much in the way of surprises as a lot of the games were announced elsewhere or leaked. Final Fantasy Resonance was the only announcement that surprised me.
@ultimateotaku91 maybe it was just too JRPG heavy for me as a Direct. I like the genre, but I can’t for the life of me remember any of them that were announced without looking them up, outside FE, FF, and FXenoblade. Gotta be honest… I don’t enjoy playing the Xenoblade games either. I love the stories, but just dislike the gameplay, so I’m not necessarily excited. XBC3 is one of my favorite stories in gaming, but I had to switch to watching the cutscenes on YouTube because I just really dislike how it plays.
I probably feel this way because Resonance and OOT are the only new games I’m contemplating on this Direct (and I’m really not sure about Resonance). Im getting Rhythm Heaven, Starfox, Fire Emblem, Orbitals, and potentially Splatoon, but I knew about them all BEFORE the Direct.
@skinnybass You're definitely missing out on some great JRPGs like Xenoblade and Fire Emblem.
@somnambulance There's definitely a problem with leak culture, in that every first party thing here was leaked. Star Fox, Xenoblade Switch 2 Editions, Switch Sports Resort, Zelda....
@somnambulance Fair enough, I must admit maybe it was a bit too much JRPG centric especially for those that want to see games from other genres.
For Xenoblade they didn't show any combat gameplay for this new game, looks to be seperate from the previous titles so it might have a different combat style such as pure hack and slash, so I'd reccomend keeping an eye on that one.
@8th_Observer Yeah definitely the combo to have for JRPG's, literally can play every Japanese console game that releases with that combo.
A lot of cool stuff especially for JRPG fans. I can't wait for Final Fantasy Resonance.
@Eadgar Nintendo brought Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 to Switch 1 and announced the new Yoshi game (the Mysterious book)
@RoomWithaMoose Well it was an OOT remake
@Haruki_NLI I can’t stand leak culture. OoT would’ve been a cool reveal if it wasn’t leaked… a year ago. Can’t believe it didn’t get a release date and showed no gameplay too.
@UltimateOtaku91 I hope Xenoblade is a different genre. After three entries, I think I’ve finally figured out that I just don’t like the gameplay of Chronicles and will otherwise save my probably $70 ticket of entry! Looking very forward to watching it on YouTube if it’s still the same genre though. 😂
I’m just sorta like “Where’s the platformers?” Even Yoshi wasn’t a platformer. It’s a puzzle game pretending to be a platformer. I mean, where’s that Planet Robobot remaster that leaked four years ago now too? Lol
@somnambulance I think, as far as Nintendo is concerned, Fire Emblem, Splatoon, and Sports are their biggest games this year. And the Galaxy movie was the big Mario celebration.
Xenoblade is definitely doing a lot of heavy lifting for me, though.
@RoomWithaMoose Ocarina of Time is surely their big one if it is coming out in 2026, no?
New Atelier. That's it, that's all I needed to be happy.
@get2sammyb I suppose it was treated as such in the Direct. And seems positioned to be the year's closer.
So sure on that one. Don't think Star Fox holds the same weight internally, though.
No exaggeration, this was the best Direct I've seen since they became a thing. Thought it was going to be a dud when it started with some weird rhythm game but then the bombs just kept coming. Lies of P(eak), Stellar Blade, Xeno 1-3 upgrades, new Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kingdom Hearts 4, new Atelier, Tales of Eternia confirmation in the sizzle real. Ocarina of Time in 2026, is crazy!
@RoomWithaMoose We’ve entered a year where Bubsy might have the best platforming game this year since Nintendo doesn’t have one. Lol.
To be fair, Nintendo’s got a line up, it’s just a weird line-up. I think I was just hoping that Switch 2 Sports and OoT weren’t going to be the only holiday games. I was hoping for something that wasn’t leaked that’d be a surprise.
For what it’s worth, Nintendo’s got the most satisfying line-up of the big 3 for me in 2026 still, even after the showcases.
@8th_Observer I agree, best of both worlds I'm really sad Sony abandoned my dusty-gatherer PSVR2. Oh well, a lot of great games from PS5 and Switch2 to look forward to
Dragon’s Dogma 2 DLC is the best gaming news I’ve heard all year! Super excited for this! We Dragon’s Dogma 2 fans have been speculating for months that this would happen. So glad it’s finally come to fruition!
@get2sammyb Didn't think Kairosoft would get ahold of such a big IP tbh
Nothing in there to make me want to buy a Switch 2, happy with my OLED Switch and a PS5. Now, if only some console would announce a new Ridge Racer or OutRun.
I don't know what it is, but Nintendo has NEVER had any games that I like or even appeal to me with the one exception of Bayonetta, which was a Seaga game at the start. Something about their games just don't 'hit' with me...... I'd be all in on a port of Bayonetta 2 and 3 but beyond that? No interest.
@Questionable_Duck They've done stuff like Doraemon I think, but yeah, One Piece obviously is much bigger.
@Ristar24 Now you're talking!
@somnambulance Personally, I was just so satisfied with Bananza, I'm not pressed for another Mario game anytime soon. Ditto for platformers in general; I want all of Nintendo's weirdest s*** first (Sin & Punishment 2 remake, you cowards!)
There was a rumor that Nintendo's working on a new Wario game, though. The leaker said there's 50/50 odds it's WareWare or Wario Land-adjacent. Since all rumors seem to be true these days, and the leaker explicitly said it won't be at today's Direct, maybe something will be announced soon to soothe your platforming needs.
@RoomWithaMoose A Wario game would soothe my needs for sure. That would be a wonderful thing to be true. If a Wario game would’ve been announced, that would’ve jumped my 5/10 rating to a 7/10. 😂
Only interested with Tales of Eternia remastered.
Still no reason for me to get a switch 2
I bought a Switch 2 primarily for Zelda, Mario, Xenoblade, and Fire Emblem. Three out of four is pretty good, even if we only saw what amounts to a concept trailer for Ocarina of Time.
They got blown out of the water by The Last Ronin. Sad not to see even a single Turtles game in the direct
I'm just happy that Muramasa is still a Switch 1 game, that way I can play it in my OLED Switch.
Anyway, I'm double-dipping for Muramasa and Final Fantasy Resonance.
