Primarily thanks to E3, the summer months have long been the time for console makers and publishers to push their plans for the future. Of course, E3 itself is pretty much dead and buried at this point, but its lasting legacy is clear to see, with events like Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest eagerly taking its place alongside individual showcases. But as a PlayStation website, our question is: does Sony need to join them?
Here's the thing: it feels like Sony absolutely has the ammunition for a blowout this summer. Between new information on exclusive titles and continued marketing agreements with third party publishers, there's loads of potential in a proper PlayStation event. But as we know all too well, Sony has become an incredibly difficult company to predict, and its most recent State of Play broadcasts have suggested that the firm is happy to break things up into more bite-sized shows.
Having said that, we can't help but think that it would be a shame for Sony to pass up on a big event — especially when we're all sitting here wondering what's next for PlayStation. Indeed, we've hit a point where we don't really have a roadmap. Beyond God of War Ragnarok — which will release this year, according to Sony — timeframes for heavy hitting games are very few and far between.
For the sake of sparking conversation, here are all of the things that we think could make for a fantastic PlayStation summer showcase:
- God of War Ragnarok release date
- Final Fantasy XVI re-reveal and potential release date
- More information on Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- More information on Marvel's Wolverine
- Potential PlayStation Studios game announcements
- Release dates for smaller titles like Stray and Little Devil Inside
- Future plans for the new PS Plus tiers
- PSVR2 overview, with a look at games like Horizon Call of the Mountain
There are bound to be a few things that we're missing, but you get the point. Sony could put on quite a show if it really wanted to, but unfortunately, we're not convinced that the company operates on this kind of scale anymore. Given how PlayStation has presented itself over the last year or so, we're almost expecting all of these things to be revealed individually. A missed opportunity, as far as us hype merchants are concerned.
And so we want to know what you think. Should Sony bring out the big guns for a proper summer showcase? Is that something you would like to see? Vote in our polls, and then have your say in the comments section below.

Yes we need one,the last showcase was lackluster, except like the final 10 minutes.
I think we are due one this summer. Outside of God of War Ragnarok we know barely any of their plans. Not only do we need to see more of that game but Final Fantasy 16 news too. As well as some new announcements from Sony, what are their other teams working on? Heck it would be nice to see Spider-Man 2 gameplay. I do believe Sony needs a showcase that not only shows what they've got prepared for PS5 but to get us excited.
They need a showcase at some point this year and I'd rather them wait and get some gameplay ready first than do what xbox will do and show a lot of CGI trailers for games years away and show a load of indies and keep mentioning over and over that it will launch on gamepass day one like its the only thing going for them..... Oh wait.
What I do expect though is a few more state of plays to come over the next 2-3 months and then a showcase in September showing off God of war Ragnarok, Forspoken and final fantasy 16
And finish the show with a square enix acquisition reveal 😉
At this point they just need to do something. The rumor mill is out control and they need to set things straight. With the PS Plus revamp coming up, I can't imagine they'll stay quiet for much longer though.
whats Sonys first party timeline after Ragnarok ?
It needs a big summer PS5 restock.
Yes. They are dry af atm.
Think they need a big acquisition splash as well
Sony is now Insomniac Games.
What the hell is everyone else doing?
It’s basically a given that one will happen at some point in the summer.
Right?
Yes Sony need to show some of they’re cards.
@MarcG420 Nope. It's just gow hehe. See you next year.
Here we go again. Come on it’s not hard to understand. A state of play is coming to focus on GOW. Then possibly in September the one showcase we have every year for the future.
Memory is short really.
I didn’t vote again because poll doesn’t make sense.
Edit
What I wish for (yea ok a showcase every week and tons of new games in wonderland) doesn’t matter much. I’m just looking at realistic expectation considering how it goes these last few years.
I think Sony having a massive showcase would be smart to get everyone excited for what’s to come from both first and third party studios. I’m thinking they are playing chess right now and are going to see how Xbox’s showcase goes.
Only if it's close to last year, where they announced wolverine. But only if they have good things to show.
@trev666 Spider-Man 2 is suppose to release in 2023 but other than that I can't think of anything else
I know it cost Sony a lot of money but I do miss the big E3 presentations where Microsoft went early in the day and Sony went after 😢
They need one, but I very highly doubt we'll get one until September. And then that one will be extremely underwhelming like last year's and the cycle will repeat.
@trev666 The current PS Studios upcoming announced lineup is:
@RevGaming insert the Simpsons “Will someone please think of the children!” meme here…
One of Sony’s most marketable divisions is the PlayStation games division. A lot of that is due to the marketing of the PS4 and the transparency with the consumers. That has disappeared, and I believe it’s affecting opinions on the brand.
I like PlayStation and am invested in the ecosystem, but unlike the past, I have little knowledge as to what there is to look forward to. Ragnarok, TLoU Factions, Spider-man 2, and Wolverine we’re aware of. But what else is there? All these studios and not much detail. Hopefully Sony opens up a little more and lets us know what the future of our investments hold.
@MarcG420
Where the games at sony?
I just NEED more news on FF16 and PSVR2. Not to mention the legacy games coming to the new program.
@RevGaming you’re nuts if you think they aren’t lined up waiting to be announced lol
Absolutely we need one. We know no release date of any upcoming exclusives like GoW or FF16 (I think)
They don’t need one… but I feel like it would help out. Aside from God of War, we don’t know anything else first-party coming out this year (sorry if I’m missing something). I know there are some “console-exclusives” like Stray and Forspoken, but it would be nice to get an announcement or two, even if they’re not slated until next year.
They also have to have a big PSVR2 blowout if they want to get consumers on board with it. The technology looks great but aside from Horizon: Call of the Mountain… there‘s not much else we know about. It would be nice to know what’s coming soon on PS5 outside of God of War and Spider-Man.
@MarcG420 They ain't got no games no more. They ran out of gasoline. See you in 2024 wheren spiderman 2 delayed will release
Sony could do with giving us some idea of GOW release date and future titles from their studios for 2023.
I think 2023 will be the big competitive year from Nintendo and Microsoft as well, so hopefully Sony have a few big AAA ready to go for 2023.
Their real issue is not enough consoles to go around for sale, which of course restricts their software sales, controllers, PSN etc etc. They probably could have sold double the amount of consoles by now which lead to further other item sales. Imagine all that revenue lost at the moment.
Sony’s communication and marketing is abysmal, so I do think they could do with one, but don’t think we’ll get one.
All they need to do is give me details on PSVR2 and I’m happy though. That and announce retro games will have trophies.
@RevGaming 😆 good joke
Hmmm will Sony do it? I'm not sure.
Do they need it? Absolutely. There is currently no date on Ragnorak and very few confirmed titles on the horizon (no pun intended).
I expect they will announce something for a week or two after the xbox showcase. I dont think they can wait for autumn this time.
After the comment about the FF16 trailer being ready to go I feel like a showcase is pretty much guaranteed at this point. I'm thinking July.
When was the last big Playstation show? Just before PS5's went up for preorder in fall 2020?
1. We need a big show from Sony with games they have in the pipe.
2. I know we won't get one... at least not during summer.
Sony isn't just difficult to predict anymore... they've basically stopped communicating with their community.
@MarcG420 Sony is a dead man walking... they have god of war... spiderman 2 for 2024 and wolverine for 2034. What a joke haha
Does Sony have content they are ready to show to the public? How would we know? That's for Sony to figure out. We aren't their corporate event planners?
Probably something, but just forget the delayed games. Also before the summer, before the new tiers drop, right? Are they gonna hold everything back til the day of release, regarding the new sub?
As for the summer and games, etc., other than GoW Rag, what else is there for first party games? Third party games, whether exclusive or not, would be nice.
I think we'll get some big reveals or showcases this summer, now that Horizon and GT7 are out there's only God of War we've really seen. Then you have PSVR2 and how close that may be, so yeah I'm hopeful for a big summer showcase
I think it is time to see what Naughty Dog has been doing with their supposed multiplayer game and aren't they also remaking/remastering The Last of Us(rumor).
A showcase is definitely happen this year its just a matter of when.word up son
Answer = yes. Probabilty = maybe.
Also calling it now, when playstation do have a showcase
Persona 6 will be there
@RevGaming Right. All the other teams have just been sitting there for years poking their noses, not knowing what to do with all their spare time. /i
Heck, we’re two weeks away from Asia getting the new PS Plus tiers and we still know next to nothing about that games will be in it (especially the classic side).
Sony has been too quiet and, honestly, pretty crappy with communication as a whole this gen. We need more of something.
I think they should stop the state of plays, they are pretty crap up to this point. Sony should do a summer show all to themselves, just like everyone else seems to be edging towards! Would be awesome!
@dschons
Yall can't take jokes.
I think they do need one, a few new titles need to be unveiled seeing as there only appears to be a few first party exclusive titles on the horizon - Ragnarok (a release date is needed for that too!), Spider-Man 2, Wolverine and that Horizon PSVR game. Maybe show something from TLOU Remake and the other ND Remake project too? Factions?? The supposed Insomniac multiplayer project??? The London Studios new PSVR project (and maybe chuck in some other upcoming PSVR games to whey appetites for the new system)???? Throw in some more third party exclusives and you have a good Summer showcase in the making I think - provided there is stuff ready to show off, of course.
It's crazy to think it's already been 7 months since Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine were officially unveiled. I'm betting Sony will surely come out and show more in the months to come, in some kind of showcase event.
@RevGaming Sorry, I didn't bring my crystal ball today.
They can't even seem to organize themselves to inform of which old games will be available on their subscription service, so I'm not exactly hopeful when it comes to info about the new games.
Depends on if they actually have games to show.
Sony doesn't need one, but i do!
On average I play more 3rd Party Games in a year than 1st Party - even if I combine Sony, Nintendo and Microsft output
So I rather these hardware makers/Industry "Mega Events" vanish and Publishers release info year round.
Nobody sits around waiting for Nvidia or AMD to make a "PC Showcase" to find out what is the next AAA or Indie on their Steam Wishlist.
Just announce games.
@dschons
But seriously. They have nothing in the near future. Just gow. Spiderman 2 will be delayed to 2024. They just started mocapping.
@RevGaming nothing announced yet, yes. I guess we'll see some near releases whenever that showcase will take place.
Whatever happened to PlayStation Experience? I for one really enjoyed those shows and they had the dual purpose of looking towards the future while also celebrating the past year.
@awp69 Perhaps something appears next week then, Sony needs to talk about the PS+ revamp lineup for Asia before May 23rd and Forspoken's original release date was May 24th (the last PS exclusive with a release date) so if a showcase was planned for next week, Sony may have kept the timing even with the Forspoken delay to October.
Sony will never make any "big blowout show" in distant future (current gen lifespan) because of a few but crucial reasons.
-they cannot secure more ps5 production, ergo doesn't need to boost sales.
-they have no huge pile of material to show, because making ps5/ps4 games is more difficult than they thought (ps4 downgrade polishing)
-they are too convinced about loyality of their customers, so they just "don't care"
It needs something because right now I'm seriously thinking of selling my ps5 & getting the xbox series x woth games like sommerville, starfield ect coming out I wanna see something from Sony! I paid alot of money for something I don't use.
12 days out from the Asian PS Plus Premium release and still no promotion for it. I have no idea what Sony are doing any more and expect very little from their marketing department. They don't need much marketing for games though as they don't tend to put out stinkers but a little warning would be nice.
So many trolls here .
Sony use to continually blow my mind and build up my hype. In regard to news and previews, they mostly whelm or underwhelm me now. So, that’s what I expect.
The fact that we don’t have 1 single release date for any upcoming FIRST party Sony title is a damn joke.
I think they do need it and I do think they’ll do it, I’m just not convinced it’s coming until September. Which I guess is the tail end of summer, but not sure it counts in this context.
Why would PlayStation need a big show?
To sell PS5's, no they sell as quick as they can make them.
To compete with MS, no there is nothing to compete with.
I can see small shows to present upcoming games like GoW or Stray. But where Xbox is still living on the promise of what is coming, PlayStation steadily releases their exclusives.
Yes we will probably see something about New Plus and some more info on PSVR2 but they have time and will release it if they can take something away from moments where MS shoots it's load.
It does. It really does. But we probably won't get one.
They can wait a bit, I guess. But Microsoft and Nintendo I'm sure are ready for some explosive reveals. It's hard to be excited for the future of PS5 right now with the complete lack of heavy hitters.
If all Sony has for the rest of the year is Ragnarok, that'd be disappointing.
@Sam_ATLUS I think it would also be fine for Sony to have their big show in September. However we look at it, they absolutely need a major show to get everyone hyped and maybe remind them not to settle for an Xbox if they can't get a PS5 yet.
@Rural-Bandit my comment was mainly aimed at Microsofts last E3 presentation, which for me was way too much cgi trailers and indie announcements.
The "release day one on gamepass" slogan after every single trailer and reveal just gets annoying, just have a banner at the beginning of the show that states all the following games will release day one on gamepass.
And no doubt the main focus of this year's show will be starfield and hellblade 2 with both having long gameplay reveals which I'm looking forward to.
Sony's last presentation showed a lot of gameplay and only wolverine really was a short cgi reveal
@Apfelschteiner September is later than I'd like but they would also work. They just need to give people a reason to convince them to wait and get a PS5 than give up on stock shortages and decide to get an Xbox because a fair number of people are doing that.
@UltimateOtaku91 I love a good mix of CGI trailers and gameplay. I like having reveals of games that are coming in a year to 18 months.
I honestly don't get why everyone's so eager for a show? Just give us some games, that's all I want
@JJ2 I totally agree. God of War State of play, plus September showcase.
@OM1993 PSVR games should be kept separate in their own showcase, unless they just say at the end, all of the games you just saw are playable in PSVR2!
@Grumblevolcano They will have a PS+ state of play in the next couple of weeks.
@Ryany You are smoking something if you think it's worth selling your PS5 to get an Xbox if you only have two games coming out that may or may not be good. If starfield is not the second coming of Christ, it will be a disaster for Xbox based on how they have pinned everything on that one game.
@OmegaStriver I view not having release dates as a good thing. It shows that the industry is learning about promising release dates that they just can't hit.
Is anyone else feeling sick of reading this site with a moving image in the ad on the left side?
@Apfelschteiner gamespass is that good that's a good enough reason. Inside is one of the best games I have ever played & sommerville looks incredible. I might just buy a series s & keep the ps5
@Apfelschteiner not as bothered about starfield it's actually sommerville I think will be amazing as inside was one of the best games of all time. The atmosphere was like no other
@Apfelschteiner I view it as such poor management that they cant hit a release date so they avoid the situation by ignoring it.
@Apfelschteiner That's fair too. I was just throwing out some ideas for what Sony could do to revolve a showcase around.
We need a God of War release date
A God of War Ragnarok release date, Bloodborne 2 teaser, upgrade patch for the 1st Bloodborne like 60fps, An announcement of PS Plus Premium Legacy/Retro games lineup for the first Month.
@RevGaming
That probably means the game’s world and most of the assets are done already.
From what I understand Mo-Cap doesn’t happen until the middle of development.
@Rural-Bandit
Spider-Man 2 was in-engine visuals if I’m not mistaken. It didn’t look like “CGI” to me.
Wolverine for sure was CGI.
@Apfelschteiner
Late 2022 exclusive sales will be between Starfield and GOWR. It’s a pretty big deal.
Here’s what I want from Sony at a theoretical Summer event. I’ll go ahead and say that I don’t expect anything related to the new PS Plus program, because that is feeling like a soft launch at the moment. They can name drop content at a slow pace for that.
1. God of War 2 release date with a long form gameplay trailer. If the game is actually releasing this fall/winter, then it’s time to get the hype machine going.
2. Gameplay trailer for Spiderman 2. Don’t expect any release window for it, but it would be reassuring to hear “aiming for 2023” from someone at Insomniac.
3. Release window for PSVR 2 with some gameplay demos shown, including Sony confirming Half Life Alyx as a launch title.
4. ND needs to show a trailer of some sort for Factions and the TLOU Remake. Plus release windows.
5. Give us some CGI reveals of the Guerrilla multiplayer project, new Twisted Metal live service game, and whatever Sony Bend is working on.
unless they have something ready to show off then no. people keep saying show this or that , but they are also trying the no rush thing right? i'd rather they focus on the game then making a slice to show off.
I definitely still think Sony should host a big summer PlayStation showcase...will be disappointed if they make us wait until September again.
@Grumblevolcano That's a very small list sadly. Not to mention 1 is a PC port and another is a PSVR game (no offense).
Hopefully we'll get a healthy selection of exclusives announced or dated soon...
@RevGaming working on games? they are all busy. Corey moved off of god of war to work on his own game. people complain when they show off games too early , they don't show off games , and then people complain they haven't shown anything off yet.
@KidBoruto Yeah, that list is why I think there'll be one soon. But I'm not extremely sure, there are other ways Sony could handle the gap and @get2sammyb ends up right.
Like Sony could use Summer Game Fest to announce something, have a GoW Ragnarok State of Play or use the PS+ revamp and GT7 updates as the PS news for months.
I had voted no earlier, but then I randomly saw a trailer on YouTube for an upcoming Square PS5 game coming out this year. It seemed to be a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics. I already forget the name, it was something like The Dua Lipa Chronicles. I wouldn't mind a showcase to a deep dive on that one.
F***ING YES… For many years Sony had the most amazing E3 conferences and it’s just sad they don’t have anything while Xbox has its showcase and Nintendo its Direct.
I genuinely don’t get their communication strategy since last year and even their last showcase was kinda lackluster with pacing issues, that why I’m voting that a summer showcase isn’t gonna happen, we most likely get a September showcase though.
I would be hyped for a show, they really need one to be honest. Unless its just full of the ten live service games we keep hearing about, then I'm not interested
@OrtadragoonX Sony Santa Monica have a good track record, Bethesda cannot be counted on and we have to wait for the reviews.
@Ryany I forgot about Somerville. It looks pretty decent. It will come to PS5 eventually.
@Ryany I'm not arguing that Xbox is not good, but PS5 is clearly the superior console in terms of games because of Sony's track record. Xbox has had more than enough time to get their studios in order, but the whole of the Xbone generation was slim pickings. Bethesda was a great purchase for Xbox, but Activision is not really one for gamers. I have so many backlog games and PS+ games that game pass would be a waste of money for me.
@Apfelschteiner yeah I hope so looks absolutely incredible from the bits they have shown. That's the only reason I'd want an xbox
@twitchtvpat Not my problem. It's Sony's problem they have no games to show besides gowr for this year.
@OrtadragoonX
AAA games get at least one delay these days. I'm expecting a 2024 release date.
I think they are due for a Showcase. I do not think it’s wise to stay silent until September.
Prior to Sony pulled out of E3, they’d still show up at other events like Paris Game Show and Gamescom, or even a PSX event.
I’m concerned people like Jim Ryan see those events as just money wastes (because of the expense of doing those events), when it’s also important that Sony keeps PlayStation buzz going.
I would think with Sony copying Nintendo’s Directs that that’d take care of the exorbitant expense of doing the physical shows. That they could manage their own presentation easy enough.
We are now 11 days away from Sony unveiling the PS Plus debut game libraries for the Asia (excluding Japan) market, and we’ve seen nothing on the games. No splashy ad, no presentation, no simple blog post.
You’d think after their financial presentation of their ‘great expectations’ for the new PS Plus, they’d put on more showmanship to drive hype. They’re still an electronics entertainment business.
That’s why I worry about bean counters like Jim Ryan. People who have, at best, vague notion of what’s good entertainment, but doesn’t partake himself, but is much more fixated on the money-side.
@Neoguardian86 Sure hiring out venues and transporting people to physical shows is expensive, but I think you should also consider the cost and inconvenience of preparing something for a showcase. Many developers find show builds to be very annoying because they aren't really working on the game, rather the marketing.
It works really well to have the in depth look at gameplay in a separate state of play. e3 used to get so boring when there was a 20 gameplay demo of a game you have little interest in, but a state of play is something you will watch particularly for that game. That way it isn't necessary to provide a playable demo for a game that is early in development. Maybe it's less interesting, but it's better this way for the business and for the developers.
TL;DR: Yes.
Long version: The E3 organisers need to rethink the whole idea and a strong one is taking it all online permanently. The actual event was always something to look forward to and to see it go from a defined time of the year is frankly like cancelling christmas because people have a birthday.
The ESA should rent a swathe of stadia server space from Google and get all the games that would normally have show floor demos hosted on there. Gamers could then pay a fee, say $20 for a 4-day ticket to play as much as they wanted via a browser once the major conferences were over.
Cut out the press jolly and go straight to the community. Because the games are stored server-side there would be no data mining of suprises and whilst companies could host their own games, doing so only advertises to the converted.
No more Shows please or anything SONY Keep up the good work for letting everyone keep guessing what the hell is going on each month to Saying that we have had some brilliant games since the PS5 came out so all is good I think
Yeah, if Sony could properly communicate with their customers (we gamers) and their developer studios, that'd be great.
Of course, that ain't happening anytime soon.
Does Sony need a Summer Showcase? Well, if Sony likes hardware and software sales, then people have to know there are games they want to play coming for their platform. And when 1 1/2 years in your first-party selection and other genuine exclusives consist of Horizon: Forbidden West and not much more, then YES, I believe Sony needs a Summer Showcase. And one that will blow gamers away, at that. Brand loyalty is a fickle thing when it comes to entertainment, and people will go where they feel their interests are best represented.
Honestly personally speaking, I don’t feel they have anything that big to announce? The things mentioned in this article like god of war, final fantasy etc are well known and there’s been a lot said about them. If they are going to do a big showcase they need some unknown big announcements to generate interest for sales especially being nearly at the mid year mark already. If it was just what’s in the article I personally would not bother watching it, I only watch when I know there are going to big announcements or surprise footage of games in development.
PS Plus has been disappointing for maybe 12 months and I'm not exactly waiting with baited breath for the new revamp.
It's pretty simple. If they have games to show releasing in the next 12 months, most with actual gameplay, then it would be great. If they don't then they shouldn't. They definitely don't need a showcase just for the sake of it.
Now that two major xbox games were delayed is the perfect time to show Playstation plans/future and capture new potential consumers. That is why I think a showcase may happen.
@Grumblevolcano Hmm yeah like @Apfelschteiner was suggesting, we might get a God of War themed State of Play in June/July, then the big yearly showcase in September.
Though I'm hoping the Summer State of Play will show off more than just God of War.
They could do a ~30 minute video and dedicate like 10-15 minutes to God of War, then announce or update other games with the remaining half.
Maybe we do need something far as we know God war ragnarok is its final game..just need more information on what's coming next year as it definitely won't be spider man 2 or wolverine
All of the games mentioned in the article have already been announced. For a big summer blowout, Sony would need to have at least two or three huge reveals
